Dimensions on born-global firms' case studies
The objective of this research is to analyze which dimensions and attributes are discussed in born-global firms’ case studies presented by the literature and in practice. For these two specific objectives were proposed: i) identify the dimensions used to study the born-global firms; ii) identify the main concepts applied to such dimensions; both analysis are based on cases studies addressed in the literature and practical case studies. This research is classified as exploratory and contains a content analysis. Furthermore, it was based on a selection of academic articles obtained on ISI Web of Knowledge database focusing on born-global firms’ case studies. The results demonstrated that the main issues regarding the born-global firms are developed in an aligned perspective regarding the theory even when the article’s focused on a particular industry. As a contribution, this study presented the list of dimensions and attributes that can be used as a reference for complementary discussions regarding the born-global case studies or even theoretical propositions. The composition of case studies that provides a broad overview for the researchers can be considered as an additional contribution of this article
Processo de internacionalização e sistemas adaptativos complexos
This article aims to analyze the characteristics of the internationalization process of companies from the Santa Cruz do Capibaribe clothing hub in Pernambuco, considering the Complex Adaptive Systems approach. The behaviors of two companies towards foreign markets over time are analyzed. The research method is qualitative, with a longitudinal approach, with the strategy being a case study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, as well as observation and research into their documentation. Data analysis is performed by means of the steady comparison method proposed by Merriam (2009). A cross analysis of cases that generated fifteen (15) pieces of evidence is presented. It is understood that the companies in an internationalization process can be regarded as Complex Adaptive Systems.O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar as características do processo de internacionalização de empresas do polo de Confecções de Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, em Pernambuco, considerando a abordagem dos Sistemas Adaptativos Complexos. Apresentação Editorial
Dear Internext readers and collaborators,We are pleased to release the second issue of volume 12 of Internext, the first in which the magazine is rated as B2 by, Qualis Periodicos. In this issue, we have six articles that all carry, I believe, important theoretical and managerial contributions, as well as suggestions of new research questions. I highlight some of these contributions this editorial. In "THE PROFILE OF THE UNIVERSITY MANAGER OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN BRAZIL", Fernanda Geremias Leal, Rafaela Ribeiro Céspedes and Luciane Stallivieri outline the profile of the international cooperation managers of the Brazilian federal public universities. From the data analysis of 46 of these institutions, they identify the positive aspects and the problems of the positioning of the international relations department in the university structure. It also analyses the personal experience of managers with activities of an international nature. Given the relevance and timeliness of the theme of internationalization of universities in the exchange of students and professors among others, and given the lack of information about these activities in Brazilian universities, this is a timely and essential contribution for those who research university management in general and its internationalization in particular. In POLITICAL PERSPECTIVES OF RELATIONSHIP NETWORKS TO INTERNATIONALIZATION OF FIRMS IN AN EMERGING COUNTRY, Jefferson Marlon Monticelli, Silvio Luís de Vasconcellos e Ivan Lapuente Garrido analyze, using the political perspective of neo-institutionalism, how institutions, especially government, influence the internationalization of Brazilian Wine sector They contribute to the understanding of how the political relationship takes within the economic sectors and between government and business sectors occur. Hardly any academic contribution could fit in better than this the Brazilian institutional context today.EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF ‘LEVEL OF COMFORT’ AMONG INTERNATIONAL WORKERS MULTINATIONAL FIRMS, by Vijesh Jain and Susana Costa e Silva develops a measurement instrument of the comfort level of multinational workers in working with people of different national cultures. The authors apply this instrument to a sample of 550 workers from 14 nationalities and develop a ranking of the levels of comfort of these workers in interacting with nationals of other cultures. In addition to providing a useful instrument for researchers and companies wishing to assess comfort level, the article elaborates the concept of cultural comfort and its relation with cultural competence and the dimensions of Hofstede, Trompenaar's and Globe.EXPANSION MODE CHOICES: THE CASE OF US MULTINATIONALS IN BRAZIL, by Juliana Carvalho Sampaio Tourinho and Hsia Hua Sheng analyze the decisions taken by 10 large and experienced multinationals in Brazil, between 2004 and 2013, identifying the possible reasons for these decisions. The study finds evidence supporting Jean-François Hennart's complementary asset theory that states that complementary local assets have owners and that access to them entails transaction costs. The article adds details to the theory, one of the classic forms of case study contributions (Ridder, Hoon, & Mccandless, 2009).In ‘IF I HUFF AND I PUFF’, FOUNDATIONS FOR BUILDING BRAZIL’S IMAGE: EVIDENCE FROM AN INTERNATIONAL SYSTEMATIC REVIEW Fabiana Gondim Mariutti, Ralph Tench, Maria Gabriela Montanari and Janaina de Moura Engracia Giraldi carry out a systematic review of the literature on the country image construct and its relation with the country of origin theory. They relate these issues with recent changes in the Brazilian economic, political and social situation. They conclude that there is still great potential for research that advances the theoretical and methodological knowledge about the image of countries in general and of Brazil in particular.COMPETITIVENESS LEVEL OF PRODUCTS EXPORTED BY MINAS GERAIS, Felipe Lopes Vieira Vasconcelos, Elisa Maria Pinto da Rochaand Jane Noronha Carvalhais, using the Revealed Competitive Advantage Index, the competitiveness of exports and regions of the Minas Gerais state, demonstrating that several of these products and territories may have their exports stimulated. The study reinforces the importance of Ricardian theory for the development of localities and has implications for managers and policy makers that formulate development policies, as it proposes and exemplifies a procedure on how to calculate the international competitiveness of products and locations.Good reading to all.Ilan AvrichirEditor in chie
Prospecting theoretical approaches to understand internationalization of creative economy firms
We argue that the internationalization process of firms in the creative economy has particular aspects that distinguish it from internationalization of firms in traditional economic sectors. We explore ways in which the international business literature might be helpful for understanding how internationalization takes place in firms whose core business is creation of ideas. We conducted a case study using a focus group technique to investigate a creative economy firm specialized in computer graphics. The firm already does business internationally as a producer of electronic mockup models, but is transitioning to the computer-generated video production industry. Our results suggest that behavioral approaches to international business related to entrepreneurship, as well as country origin effects and networks theory could be useful to expanding knowledge about the internationalization process in such firms, in which creativity is a critical resource
Marketing performance of subsidiaries operating abroad: An integrative model
In the internationalization process firms face challenges in order to be successful, such as enabling knowledge transfer, finding the optimum balance between standardizing/adapting their marketing strategies, determining the strength of external networks, and deciding degrees of reverse innovation. Research on knowledge transfer in multinational firms has grown considerably over the last 15 years, but still little is known about its impact on the marketing performance of subsidiaries. The majority of the investigations carried out analyze knowledge transfer but not its interrelationships with the performance of subsidiaries. Several other studies evaluate the standardization/adaptation decision, but do not take into consideration issues such as operational environments or psychic distance. To fill this gap we review 70 articles published in top-tier peer-reviewed international and national journals in the field of international business and international marketing. From this review we build up a framework for the development of an integrative and explanatory theoretical model of the marketing performance of subsidiaries operating abroad with fifteen propositions. In this paper we present a literature review and model that will be empirically tested after gathering information to form a reliable database about the performance of multinationals
Social business in multinational corporations: an analysis of marketing practices
Social business (SB) as a category of organization that seeks to create long-term economic and social value for the majority of the people has attracted the attention of policy-makers, practitioners, and scholars. Some authors highlight the role that multinational corporations (MNCs) have in mitigating social and environmental problems by offering products and services to meet the demands of lower-income populations. Based on a discussion of social business and such initiatives inside MNCs, this article investigates how the Brazilian subsidiaries of two large MNCs (Coca-Cola and Danone) are performing SB in a developing country. More specifically, we focused on how they are using their marketing know-how to achieve the desired results. The cases were chosen based on their global relevance, reach, and representativeness in SB efforts. Our study has shown that their social initiatives are linked to the corporate mission, values and strategies, and that they aim to achieve social transformation in connection to their core business. Our goal is to contribute both to academic research and to future initiatives in Brazil and other developing countries
Cidades globais no contexto dos negócios internacionais: Do esquecimento à tendência na produção acadêmica
This paper investigates the international business literature of the last forty years from the incorporation of the term global cities as a reference in the construction of new theoretical contributions. A bibliometric method was performed in two stages. In the first one, the main areas of knowledge and the seminal studies addressing the concept were identified. Most research focuses on economic geography and urban studies. In the second, the approaches used specifically in international business were organized in the main journals of the area. The results show that the studies on global cities are still incipient, highlighting, among the approaches, the relation between location advantages and specific aspects of the multinational company. In addition, there is a growing interest in the development of analyzes at the subnational level represented by global cities, from different aspects such as the choice of entry mode, the role of advanced service firms, the importance of networks and the process of knowledge transfer. The combination of the perspectives of economic geography and international business, although claimed by scholars from both areas, still lacks a more robust theoretical and empirical body in regard to cities as centers of attractiveness of foreign investment in global markets. In analyzing the importance of the phenomenon of global cities, this study contributes to a better understanding of the contemporary internationalization strategies of multinational companies, highlighting the interdisciplinary potential between international business theories and economic geography.
The corporate branding in international operations
Corporate branding is increasingly gaining relevance in companies’ internationalization; however, few studies directly address the influence and use of corporate branding in processes of internationalization. This study examines these topics and shows the corporate brand as a critical capability in relationships with different stakeholders. A literature review explores corporate branding approaches in international business. In addition, a quantitative exploratory study was conducted using a survey with 297 management-level professionals in Brazil in order to find out if company operation scopes, whether local or multinational, interfere with views on corporate branding. The findings highlight the construction of identity in multinationals as one of the main reasons for adopting corporate brands. However, company operation scopes do not significantly interfere with the hierarchy of reasons perceived as important in the adoption of corporate branding. An emphasis on the concept of corporate branding based on organizational identity was noted among respondents who work at multinationals, showing the relevance of this topic for future research
O perfil do gestor universitário de cooperação internacional no Brasil
The concept of internationalization has been used in higher education as a measure of quality and resource for universities to respond to the challenges of a complex global context. Despite the dominant discourse that internationalization has transformed university structures, there are few studies that deal with internationalization management in academic institutions and international cooperation university managers. This paper contributes to the beginning of this discussion in Brazil by studying international cooperation managers of Brazilian federal universities. The sample included 46 universities associated with the Brazilian Association of International Education (Faubai). Documentary research was carried out using the websites of the offices for international affairs and the Lattes curriculums of their managers. The results point to positive aspects, such as the positioning of these offices in university structures and the personal experience of current managers with international activities. They also indicated problems such as the turnover of managers; accumulation of tasks; education in areas not related to internationalization; and a lack of participation in education programs related to their responsibilities.
This work seeks to understand the level of competitiveness of products exported by Minas Gerais, identifying the sectors in the state as well as those that need public policies to promote exports. A descriptive and exploratory approach is used, which provides an overview of some of the main ideas that concern international trade, showing its importance for the economic development of a state. Documentary research was also done to explore data and information provided by the platform DataViva. Exported goods were grouped by the combination of the variables in the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) index. This work aims to reinforce the importance of international trade and Ricardian theory for the economic development of Minas Gerais. The results show that the products exported, when compared to the products considered “competitive” and “with competitive potential” in Brazil’s exports, do not present, by and large, the same levels of competitiveness; therefore, many of these products should have their export stimulated.
