Location: Körtik Tepe, Province Diyarbakır, Southeastern Turkey, at the confluence of the River Tigris and the Batman Creek. Period: Younger Dryas to Early Holocene (10400-9200 BCE) Focus: Archaeological evidence for permanent occupation of the site; conditions favouring early sedentism at the intersection of two ecological regimes: the riverine environments and the steppe/tree-steppe mountain ranges of the hinterland; ecological and socio-economic impact of sedentism and of climatic changes from the Younger Dryas to the Early Holocene; interpretation of burial customs comparing evidence of daily practices and emerging differentiation in burial rituals. Methods: Archaeobotany, stable isotope analyses, modelling of radiocarbon sequences; holistic approac

Thoughts on the possible Iranian origins of the Jemdet Nasr painting style

Dates: ca. 3150-2900 B.C.E.Places: Western Iran and Central MesopotamiaMain argument: It is admitted that Iran had an influence on the southern Mesopotamian region during the Jemdet Nasr period, but the mechanisms of this influence are not clear. This talk would like to suggest some Iranian influence arrived in Central Mesopotamia during the collapse of the so-called "Uruk system", which coincides with the reappearance of painting on ware

Signale zur Markierung von Diskursrelationen im Vergleich: Am Beispiel von Zeitungsleitartikeln in Deutschland und Taiwan

    Get PDF
The present work deals with signals for marking discourse relations, which play an outstanding role for the understanding of a text. The aim of the study is to use German and Taiwanese newspaper editorials to capture signals that mark discourse relations. An attempt is made to classify signals according to their linking functions. This should contribute to the fact that implicit and explicit discourse relations can be differentiated from one another and compared with each other. In the literature search, a contrastive study on discourse relations around newspaper editorials is not yet available. It is therefore interesting to look at how signals that mark discourse relation are used in the newspaper editorial, and whether language-specific differences can be derived from them, and what conclusions can be drawn from the results of the analysis on foreign language didactics

Il monegasco e i dialetti liguri costieri dell’area intemelia: alcuni dati campionari per una definizione dei rispettivi rapporti di divergenza

    Get PDF
Monegasque is a Ligurian dialect imported into the territory of today’s Principality of Monaco between the 13th and 15th centuries by settlers originating from western Liguria, more specifically from the Intemelian coastal area. Probably also due to Monaco’s ever-present relations with Liguria over the centuries, this variety (nowadays recognised as the Principality’s national language) is still particularly akin to those spoken on the coastline between Ventimiglia and Sanremo, despite its showing several peculiar features at a phonetic, morphological and syntactic level. These can be explained in terms of a different (or further) development from Latin, in the retention of certain features currently localized in the inland areas of Intemelian Liguria or, far more occasionally, through the influence of Provençal. Given the absence of overview contributions specifically devoted to this topic, the aim of this paper is to investigate and succinctly justify the most conspicuous divergences between present-day Monegasque and the Intemelian coastal dialects in the terms outlined above

Fluktuationen in den psychometrischen Kennwerten des hessischen „Kindersprachscreenings“ während und nach der Validierung

Most German states assess German language skills of children of the late kindergarten age in large-scale language screening programs. In the state of Hesse, language test “Kindersprachscreening” (“Language screening for children”, KiSS) was developed for this purpose. Its target group are kindergarten children aged four- to four-and-a-half years. In the present study, changes in the psychometric characteristics of KiSS – level of difficulty, item-total correlations, internal consistency – and possible explanations for these changes were scrutinized. For this purpose, seven KiSS samples were re-analysed retrospectively: five from KiSS validation studies and two from the Hessian language screening program. Psychometric characteristics of KiSS improved for the monolingual German-speaking children in the language screening program in comparison with KiSS validation studies. Fluctuations in the item-total correlations and internal consistency were linked to changes in the difficulty level of KiSS tasks. In the data of bi-/multilingual children, no fluctuations of psychometric characteristics were detected. Some findings point at a selection bias – an unexpectedly high proportion of children needing language therapies – in the samples of KiSS validation studies and of the language screening program. This bias can result in incorrect KiSS cut-off values, if these are updated on the basis of data from the language screening program

Differences in prominence perception by German natives and Italian L2 learners. : Acoustic aspects and their implications for SLA

    Get PDF
This study employs a perceptual and an acoustic analysis of a corpus of spontaneous utterances taken from German podcasts on sustainability. The objective is to identify and examine the differences in the perception of prominence between two groups of participants: a group of adult Italian learners of German as a Foreign Language (GFL) and a group of German native speakers. The results of the analysis lend support to the hypothesis that the differences in prominence perception can be attributed to perception patterns based on duration for Italian native speakers and on pitch variations for German native speakers. In light of the evidence presented, some considerations are made regarding the potential applications of acoustic analysis in GFL courses. The potential applications of this approach are investigated, based on a simplified visualisation of prosody, by means of F0 curves enriched with information on the periodic energy of the acoustic signal

Come valutano i parlanti nativi la pronuncia dei non nativi? Indagine esplorativa s’un campione d’apprendenti italofoni di spagnolo LS

    Get PDF
This contribution presents the results of an exploratory investigation on how native speakers perceive and evaluate the Italian accent of FL Spanish. The questionnaire was designed to evaluate four dimensions: comprehensibility, “fluency”, “foreign accent” and “irritability”. The four dimensions are assessed using Likert scales; for fluency and foreign accent the evaluators are also asked to express a score for each of a series of aspects pre-selected by the author. For a more refined evaluation, open questions are provided for the dimensions “comprehensibility”, “foreign accent” and “irritability”. We attempted to answer two main questions: 1. What kind of interaction can be observed between the four dimensions? 2. What are the concrete linguistic aspects that determine the perceptual evaluations of the evaluators, in relation to foreign accent? The results show an intense correlation between accentedness, on the one hand, and irritability and fluency, on the other. As for the second question, realization of final consonants, excessive closing or opening of mid vowels and markedly ascending contour in continuative or assertive intonation are the most frequently reported aspects

LLM referential chain generation.: A qualitative case study based on Italian biographies produced by GPT-4

    Get PDF
The goal of the present contribution is to shed light on the textual properties of written outputs generated by large language models by focusing on the referential dimension of textual organization. To gain insights on this aspect, we analyze the properties of the referring expressions forming the main referential chain running through biographies, which typically correspond to the personality on which the text is centered. Based on an empirical qualitative corpus-driven analysis of 30 biographies generated in Italian by GPT-4, we describe (i) the forms of the linguistic expressions codifying the discourse referents building the main referential chain of the biographies; (ii) the degree of complexity of these linguistic expressions, verifying if they match the degree of cognitive accessibility of the discourse referents; finally, on a textual level, (iii) the architectures that these chains form and the distribution of the chain’s rings in the textual units composing the biography. Our analysis reveals that the main referential chain building the analyzed biographies is generally well-formed but very simple and relies on repetitive textual patterns. At a micro-textual level, we find marked textual patterns such as the over-codification of a discourse referent as well as cases of over-segmentation of semantically and pragmatically compact textual units

Étude socioterminologique du vocabulaire de l’esclavage pour la constitution d’un glossaire bilingue gungbe-français

    Get PDF
Sometimes, language codifies phenomena differently, depending on several parameters that need to be accommodated under social aspects. This work proposes a terminology of slavery based on certain common designations of acts and actors of slavery and the slave trade itself. The working method adopted consisted in exploring the language of the designations and searching for their equivalents or the etymology of the concepts. This involved describing the process of capturing, buying and selling, transporting and exploiting slaves, followed by the construction of a lexical field. It emerged that the terms that codify the slave or slavery in Gungbe vary in the social environment according to several parameters linked to the experience or perception of the speaker

Sprachbewusstheit bei neu zugewanderten und in Deutschland aufgewachsenen Schüler:innen – Methodische Überlegungen und erste Ergebnisse zum Instrument MetaLing

The relationship between language awareness and academic success among students has recently garnered increased attention. Previous studies on language awareness have primarily focused on bilingual students (cf. Riehl 2021; Torregrossa/Eisenbeiß/Bongartz 2022). However, the extent to which newly immigrated students in regular classes in Germany benefit from their language awareness has not yet been explored. Our project addresses this gap by examining the language awareness of newly immigrated and multilingual secondary school students using an assessment tool, MetaLing, developed within the project. This paper presents the first results of an exploratory study with 160 students, including 47 newly immigrated ones, to investing a) the level of language awareness among newly immigrated and native-born secondary school students in Germany, and b) the methodological challenges in assessing language awareness, particularly in this target group. Initial results indicate that MetaLing effectively captures language awareness without bias toward specific languages. Challenges such as technical issues and varying familiarity with online tools were noted. Future research will refine the tool and expand its application across different educational contexts
