New Advances in Low-Energy Processes for Geo-Energy Development
This Special Issue highlights pioneering advancements in subsurface energy systems, encompassing hydrocarbon extraction and geothermal utilization through sustainable technological innovations. Featuring multidisciplinary investigations, this research series focuses on optimizing resource recovery while minimizing environmental impacts across unconventional formations and thermal reservoirs. Key contributions demonstrate novel approaches ranging from nanoscale flow behavior analysis in tight formations to integrated geophysical–AI workflows for reservoir characterization. Light of the Everlasting Life
From disability metaphors to narratives structured around bodies presented as aberrant, early medieval English thoughtworlds conveyed the promise of resurrection and the hope of salvation through crip and disabled bodies. Light of the Everlasting Life argues that early medieval Christian eschatology, as manifested in Old English literary texts, was a crip eschatology: a theology of the afterlife that relied upon disabled bodies and concepts related to disability in order to convey promises of resurrection and salvation. In addition to demonstrating how literature manifested theological approaches to the afterlife, Leah Pope Parker articulates the ways of thinking about bodies and disability that were available to ordinary early medieval people, many of whom experienced their bodies in ways that resonate with what we call disability today, but who rarely appear in the historical record. By analyzing Old English texts, including Alfredian translations, Ælfric’s saints’ lives, and poetry from the Exeter and Vercelli Books, Parker introduces novel ways of characterizing disability’s effects in literature. “Spiritual prosthesis” reveals rhetorical, narrative, and theological reliance upon disability to convey the promise of a Christian afterlife. “Systems of aberrance” emerge as a result, in which bodies marked as deviant—including disabled, monstrous, heroic, saintly, and dead bodies—form a network of embodiments that reinforce the narratives they inhabit and that of Christian salvation history. Calf Nutrition and Management
This Reprint aims to provide current information on nutritional and management strategies for optimizing calf health, welfare, and development during early life. This critical stage significantly affects the future health, growth, and productivity of calves and has a lasting impact on the future productivity and the sustainability of dairy systems. Contributions within this Reprint explore the effects of colostrum quality and administration, the use of probiotics and nutraceuticals to support immune function and reduce morbidity, and the role of housing and environmental factors in promoting welfare. A novel model for estimating body weight from morphometric data is also presented, accompanied by a user-friendly tool to facilitate on-farm use. A pilot study highlights how early-life disease influences fecal and nasal microbiome development, revealing that microbial assembly is largely governed by stochastic processes. The effect of dietary fiber and forage particle size under heat stress conditions is additionally examined. Together, these contributions support evidence-based approaches to improve short- and long-term outcomes in calf rearing
Leagues of Laughter
Leagues of Laughter traces how a Soviet-created youth game changed as students’ nation states collapsed, competed and went to war. The game, called KVN (Klub veselykh i nakhodchivykh, or Club of the Cheerful and Clever), spread to universities across the USSR in the 1960s. It is scored by a panel of judges, like figure skating, but is played in school and university leagues, much like football. KVN rocketed to mass popularity, oddly, due to Soviet censorship. Young people could not protest in essays, speeches or fiction, but the referents of live jokes are hard to prove. KVN became a forum for Aesopian free speech. Soviet pedagogues promoted the game as a wholesome, intellectual youth activity, leading to a preponderance of ordinary schoolchildren gaining at least some experience writing jokes. Even after the fall of the USSR, millions of young people across the former Soviet bloc continued playing KVN in schools, universities and semi-pro leagues. Drawing on fieldwork in Russia and Ukraine between 2015 and 2019, Garey compares KVN traditions in two post-Soviet nation states at war. A series of interconnected, cross-border stories spanning 60 years illustrates how laughter and oppression entwined in the long cultural context of the war in Ukraine

In the early years, key scholarly figures included Augusto Franchetti, Niccolò Rodolico, and Carlo Morandi. Over time, the chronological focus shifted forward—from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age—and eventually settled on Contemporary History, a discipline formally inaugurated at the "Cesare Alfieri" School by Giovanni Spadolini, who won the first professorship competition in Italy for this subject and became a mentor to an important generation of scholars
David Friedrich Strauß: A Reading of His Gospel Criticism and Metaphysics
Shortly after the 150th anniversary of David Friedrich Strauß‘ death and the 300th anniversary of Kant’s birth; this study makes a close reading of their work and distorted reception down to this day. Strauß’ Life of Jesus (1835) led to political revolution in Zurich in 1839 and exclusion from the classroom. Although Strauß’ rejection of Hegel’s ‘science’ of Absolute Idealism occurred by 1838; it did not bring with it a re-examination of the anti-Kantian sentiment among his mentors (Hegel; Schleiermacher; F.C. Baur; etc.). The result was eclipsing Kant’s option to reductionist materialism that embraces ‘faith’ and ‘feeling’ at the core of all order; rational and moral; as the motor of creative; responsible (communal) agency in the world

Acculturation of Korean New Zealander Youth
This open access book explores the acculturation, identity development, and cultural reconnection of newer-generation (1.5- and second-generation) Korean New Zealander youth who grew up in New Zealand after the 1990s. Based on in-depth interviews, it shows how many of them initially sought to assimilate into the dominant culture but later experienced a process of re-ethnicization, rediscovering their Korean heritage during adolescence and early adulthood. Chapters explore key themes such as cultural adaptation, ethnic identity, racism, co-ethnic friendships, and the role of digital media and the Korean Wave in fostering re-ethnicization. This book also situates these youth experiences within the broader contexts of New Zealand’s multicultural policies, its bicultural foundation, multicultural frameworks and the global dynamics of diaspora and migration. Drawing on theories of segmented assimilation, transnationalism, and ethnic belonging, this book offers new insights into how young migrants navigate dual identities and negotiate belonging in an increasingly diverse and complex society for scholars and students in migration studies, sociology, diaspora studies, Asian studies and cultural studies
1: Migration and knowledge diffusion: lessons from the early modern world
This chapter explores the dynamic relationship between migration and innovation in the early modern period (ca. 1400–1800), challenging the traditional narrative that views this era merely as a precursor to the mass migrations and industrialisation of later centuries. It was a time of early globalisation, characterised by interconnected trade and exchanges across all inhabited continents, yet devoid of nation-states or dominant western imperial powers. This decentralised framework shaped unique patterns of human mobility and technological exchange, offering valuable counter-narratives to modern migration discourses. By examining the theoretical foundations of historical science and technology studies, the chapter presents a typology of early modern migration and its effects, revealing attitudes toward migrants that diverge sharply from contemporary perspectives. The chapter concludes by addressing the limitations of migration-driven innovation during this period, providing a nuanced understanding of its transformative yet constrained potential.Publishe
