Big Earth Data in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals (2023) – China

    No full text
This open-access book presents innovative applications of Big Earth Data through a set of comprehensive case studies conducted in China. The studies demonstrate how advanced data methods can be employed to monitor and evaluate indicators for seven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): zero hunger (SDG 2), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), and life on land (SDG 15). In addition, the book explores the complex interactions among multiple SDG indicators. The emphasis on Big Earth Data is particularly timely in view of pressing global challenges. Issues such as disaster risk reduction, climate change, food security, resource management, and environmental protection are inherently interconnected through Earth systems and processes that transcend political and social boundaries. Within this context, the case studies highlight methodological advances in spatial information mining and integrated SDG evaluation, including analyzing synergies and trade-offs among SDGs through correlation studies, simulating interactions of multiple indicators under projected environmental, economic, and social scenarios, and developing integrated frameworks for regional SDG assessment. Taken together, these findings illustrate the potential of Big Earth Data to provide robust scientific evidence in support of policy formulation and decision-making at global, regional, and local levels

Degradation and Recycling of Polymer Materials

    No full text
This Special Issue features papers and reviews on the topics of “microplastics,” “recycling,” and “plastic degradation mechanisms.” Discarded plastics are currently causing significant environmental damage to diverse ecosystems such as the ocean, meaning that the development of purification methods is an urgent priority. Focusing on “microplastics” as a representative environmental problem, this Special Issue includes research regarding their formation mechanisms. Additionally, we have gathered papers and reviews on “recycling” and “plastic degradation mechanisms” as potential approaches for developing methods to suppress their formation. Furthermore, regarding “microplastics,” we have included papers that delve into the generation behavior of nanoplastics and which detail the latest cutting-edge research in this field. The sections focused on “recycling” and “plastic degradation mechanisms” feature carefully selected papers that present novel technologies not previously explored. We hope that this Special Issue will serve as a catalyst for the development of new technologies for purifying microplastics

A Catalogue of the Mongolian Manuscripts and Xylographs of the Ernst-Collection

    No full text
The Swiss physical chemist and nobel laureate Prof. Dr. Richard R. Ernst who passed away a few years ago, had acquired a large collection of Tibetan and Mongolian xylographs and manuscripts over the course of several decades. The catalogue presents the Mongolian part of this unique collection, which consists of 275 individual texts. The oldest of the texts described here date from the 17th century, the youngest are from the first half of the 20th century. The collection encompasses the full range of Mongolian literature, from translations of the Tibetan Buddhist canon to ritual instructions, astrological texts, and divinatory manuals, from historical works and narrative literature to multilingual terminological dictionaries, medical treatises and administrative documents. The collection also includes some richly illustrated stories about the Buddhist hells.Publishe

Using the Delphi Method to Establish Expert Consensus

    No full text
This Open Access book provides detailed practical guidance on how to do a Delphi study to establish a consensus across the broad range of social, psychological, health and environmental sciences. The book informs the design of Delphi studies by drawing on wisdom-of-crowds research on the conditions under which groups make better-quality judgements. It covers the development of the Delphi method and its many variations, as well as the ways this method has been used to make judgements of facts where the evidence is imperfect, set methodological standards, make predictions, define foundational concepts, determine collective values, and improve professional practice and policy. It takes the reader through the steps in carrying out a Delphi study and the choices that have to be made at each step. It also covers the implementation of Delphi findings in practice. Case examples are included throughout drawing from a variety of disciplines

    Challenging Conventions

As the core theme of Early Modern Ottoman poetry, love inspired a plethora of Turkish research, the most enlightening of which explored questions of terminology, semantics, and mystic dimensions. Internationally, however, there have been few publications on this subject. This book scrutinizes the different strands of ʿışḳ, passionate love, their various backgrounds, and studies specific poets who engaged with this multifaceted concept

    Rape Culture and the Bible

    No full text
Rape Culture and the Bible: Scholars Reflect offers readers the opportunity to hear from prominent and influential biblical scholars and scholar activists as they reflect on their work on sexual violence vis-a-vis the Bible. This book covers major points of inquiry in the field, focusing primarily on the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. It explores debates on appropriate terminology; intersectionality of sexual violence, gender, and race; how survivor perspectives inform the reading of violent texts; male-on-male sexualized violence in biblical literature; and the connections of Judeophobia with sexual violence in early Christian literature. The introductory chapter establishes methodology, purpose, and aims of this volume. The final chapter reflects on the ethical concerns governing the field, challenges scholars have faced in their discipline, and the tasks ahead. Along the way, Rape Culture and the Bible demonstrates how rape and rape culture in the Bible impact real lives across time and the globe. Stadt – Land – Boden

    No full text

Intelligent Point Cloud Processing, Sensing and Understanding (Volume II)

    No full text
Point clouds serve as a fundamental representation of the 3D digital world despite their inherently irregular topologies. Recent advances in sensor technology have significantly improved the acquisition of point cloud data, enabling flexible and scalable geometric representations. These developments have catalyzed new methodologies and solutions across a wide range of remote sensing applications. State-of-the-art sensors can generate dense point clouds from diverse platforms—including aerial and UAV systems and vehicle-mounted, backpack, handheld, and static terrestrial scanners—capturing objects from multiple perspectives (nadir, oblique, and side views) and spectral bands (e.g., multispectral imaging). Additionally, variations in point density and completeness contribute to different levels of granularity in 3D reconstructions. The applications of point cloud processing continue to expand beyond traditional geospatial analysis, encompassing fields such as manufacturing, civil and mechanical engineering, construction, transportation, ecology, and forestry. This collection of contributions highlights the latest innovations in point cloud registration, compression, and perception, offering insights into existing challenges and paving the way for novel 3D applications
