    Inside Asylum Appeals

    No full text
Appeals are a crucial part of Europe’s asylum system but they remain poorly understood. Building on insights and perspectives from legal geography and socio-legal studies, this book shines a light on what takes place during asylum appeals and puts forward suggestions for improving their fairness and accessibility. Drawing on hundreds of ethnographic observations of appeal hearings, as well as research interviews, the authors paint a detailed picture of the limitations of refugee protection available through asylum appeals. Refugee law can appear dependable and reliable in policy documents and legal texts. However, this work reveals that, in reality, myriad social, political, psychological, linguistic, contextual and economic factors interfere with and frequently confound the protection that refugee law promises during its concrete enactment. Drawing on evidence from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom, the book equips readers with a clear sense of the fragility of legal protection for people forced to migrate to Europe. The book will appeal to scholars of migration studies, legal studies, legal geography and the social sciences generally, as well as practitioners in asylum law throughout Europe and beyond. Shakespeare and Seriality

    No full text
Encompassing a wide variety of genres, media and art forms across a broad historical scope, this open access book identifies central strategies of serialization in Shakespeare’s plays and their adaptations. Beginning with an introduction that theorizes the method of reading Shakespeare serially on page, stage and screen, the first section investigates Shakespeare himself as a serial writer and serial rewritings of Shakespeare by Joyce and Beckett. Shakespeare and Seriality then moves to a series of case studies of performative seriality from the early modern stage to theatre, film and ballet in the 20th and 21st centuries. It culminates in the analysis of adaptations of Shakespeare in complex TV series, including Succession, the postapocalyptic series Station Eleven and the cosy crime series Shakespeare and Hathaway. This book investigates Shakespeare’s seriality from various theoretical perspectives and through multiple methods, including gender and queer theory, ecocriticism, memory and heritage studies, psychoanalysis, empathy studies and fandom studies, reception history and theatre history. Examining serial reading as a method of establishing intertextual and intermedial links, this volume contributes to recent developments in adaptation studies including the debate between Shakespeare and ‘not-Shakespeare’. Global Politics of Welsh Patagonia

    No full text
Inspired by decolonial thinking, this book challenges romantic images of Y Wladfa, the Welsh Patagonian settlement founded in 1865. Drawing on archival sources written in Spanish, Welsh and English, it exposes the complex human relationships of this settler colony, and in particular disrupts the myth of Welsh–Indigenous friendship by foregrounding Indigenous experience and revealing less familiar accounts in the record. A newly-developed framework applies three logics – possession, racialization/barbarisation, and assimilation – to make sense of settler colonialism in Patagonia and to debate Wales’s complex position as both colonised and coloniser. A new analysis of contemporary cultural products (television, film, textbooks) further demonstrates how the romantic view continues to shape racial stereotypes today, concluding that such settler origin countries as Wales are vital sites of decolonial debate

Chapter 7 Grey Matters in Technologies

    No full text
This book explores the conceptual, historical, and ethical issues of information conflict to present a detailed analysis of cognitive warfare. Is it possible for liberal democracies to deliberately use information on civilian populations to impact political and social institutions? While information conflict has been a part of political conflict, warfare, and international relations for as long as there has been political competition, given that our modern political and social lives are saturated by information, we are now faced with a pressing set of reasons to understand cognitive warfare, and to place it in a wider historical and technological context. This book identifies a series of conceptual and ethical challenges facing liberal democracies around modern information conflict. Drawing from historical practices, it suggests that two values – human dignity and political autonomy – can explain why some acts of cognitive warfare might be judged to be good while other acts are judged to be bad. This book will be of much interest to students and researchers of intelligence studies, ethics, security studies, and International Relations

    Socialisme et innovation technologique

    No full text

3D Research Challenges in Cultural Heritage V

    No full text
This open access book presents a collection of papers focussing on 3D digitisation in the domain of cultural heritage. The use of data acquisition technologies in digitising cultural heritage holds great potential for preserving and disseminating the history of mankind. However, to exploit these opportunities in full, comprehensive guidelines for documenting the process of digitisation are required. Only then can the efficiency and credibility of digital representations be assured. A major focus of the 16 papers included in this State-of-the-Art Survey is on all aspects of the documentation of the digitisation process, i.e., the paradata, which, alongside the metadata, is critical to the scientific rigour, replicability and sustainability of digital heritage resources. The volume provides a useful resource for computer scientists, surveyors, archaeologists, architects, museologists and engineers
