    No full text
This book is the first in the European Philosophical Studies series and includes the papers from the international conference, The European Province. Ideas and Representations of the Crisis of Europe. 1900-1939, which was held at the University of Naples Federico II from March 13 to 15, 2023. The book is divided into four sections. The first section, The Words of the Crisis, gives a general idea of the European crisis. It uses some important works from that time. The next section, Diseases and Cures, looks at the work of important ‘psychopathologists of the spirit’ who could identify and treat the European disease. The third section, Narratives of Crisis, features historians and writers. They discuss the spiritual atmosphere of the ‘crisis of European consciousness.’ The fourth and final section, Actions and Reactions, welcomes contributions with more political implications.

Education and the Politics of Memory in Russia and Eastern Europe

    No full text
This book examines both formal and extracurricular education, and the politics of memory and historical narratives in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Ukraine. The misalignment between memory politics and history politics forms a central theme of this book. Structured in three parts, it focuses on school education in the post-Soviet states over the 30 years between the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The chapters inquire as to how post-Soviet school education, politics of memory, and history politics became active participants in the production of state-approved ideology, patriotism, and a state-prescribed understanding of the national past. Armed conflicts in the territory of the former USSR not only saw numerous victims and refugees but also the emergence of new borders and unrecognized (de-facto) states, and the annexation of territories. They also contributed to the creation of new sites of memory, generated their own traditions of commemoration for the heroes and victims of these confrontations, and led to the reconstruction of historical narratives and the construction of new national myths. The research in this book foregrounds how the nationalization of the public space and the reconstruction of national historical narratives in the independent states reflect a desire to monopolize the power to interpret the past, with low tolerance of alternative accounts. In this light, the book covers issues such as the nation-state, Sovietization, national history creation, memory politics, religion, mass media, nationalism and patriotism, and analyzes the relationship of Azerbaijani and Armenian, Russian and Ukrainian societies with their histories and pasts. A novel study on the topic of memory and history writing, this is a timely contribution to the field of Post-Soviet history and Russian and Eastern European Studies. Le tirage au sort dans l’Antiquité

The practice of drawing lots has a long history, dating back to ancient times. As far back as the Iliad and other epics, because it was based on chance and the intervention of the gods, it was opposed, philosophically and practically, to human choice, whether that choice was based on reason and deliberation, voting or personal goodwill. This volume focuses on this procedure, which was both frequent and common in the ancient Mediterranean basin. Through eighteen contributions, it sketches out a collective reflection on the political, religious, administrative and playful uses to which the sors was put. The study begins with the Greek and Italian worlds of the Archaic and Classical periods and takes the reader all the way to Republican and Imperial Rome, an area and period for which sortitio has not yet received the attention it deserves. Taking a diachronic and comparative approach, the book seeks to highlight the different meanings and virtues attached to the drawing of lots, depending on the regimes that used it and their political culture. Why did the Romans, like so many other ancient peoples, choose to leave so much to chance in the running of the city’s affairs? In addition to the issues specific to ancient history, this book is part of a contemporary debate. In particular, it seeks to give historical and anthropological depth to the current debate on the reintroduction of the drawing of lots in the context of the crisis of “representativeness” that Western democracies are currently experiencing

Student engagement and participation are factors of particular importance for the educational field, due to their relationship with the processes of permanence in school, the use of learning opportunities and the achievement of academic goals. This research aims to investigate how these two factors were possibly affected during the implementation of ICT mediated classes during the pandemic in 2020, which emerged as a learning methodology due to the fact that the pandemic forced the different spaces of social interaction and academic institutions to enter confinement. among them universities, where students through virtual platforms received the information of their classes from a computer at home, with multiple distractions such as the use of electronic devices, home situations and even the performance of domestic activities. The possibility of researching these changes in the educational context from the experience of those who are living this process, including students, can facilitate the recognition of the characteristics of their experience in virtual environments and their relationship with the tools used, which allow discovering opportunities that develop a strategic planning of educational communication. Physics in Minerva’s Academy

This monograph explains how, in the aftermath of the battle over René Descartes’ philosophy, Newton’s natural philosophy found fertile ground at the University of Leiden. Newton’s natural philosophical views and methods, along with their underlying distinctions, seamlessly aligned with the University of Leiden’s institutional-religious policy, which urged professors and students to separate theology from philosophy. Additionally, these views supported the natural philosophical agendas of Herman Boerhaave, Willem Jacob's Gravesande, and Petrus van Musschenbroek. Newton’s natural philosophical program was especially useful in the three Leiden professors' project of reforming existing disciplines and providing them with epistemic legitimacy

    Creating with Roots

Creating with Roots is a critical introduction to the history, theory, and creative practice of Chinese national folk dance, the Chinese-speaking world’s most popular contemporary dance form. A complex cultural and artistic phenomenon that resists simple categorization, Chinese national folk dance merges folkloric material with contemporary stage aesthetics and blends rural folk dances of the Han majority with dances representing China’s minoritized ethnic communities, bridging cultural differences of geography, economic class, and ethnicity. As such, Chinese national folk dance has become a lightning rod for current debates in the arts worldwide—how to balance local heritage with artistic innovation, how to maintain cultural integrity amid commercialization and Eurocentrism, and the ethics of representation in contemporary multiculturalism. Chinese national folk dance is increasingly a globalized phenomenon: schools, classes, competitions, and performances of professionals and amateurs now exist all across the world. Originally published in Chinese and authored by prominent Chinese dance scholar, Rui Xu, this English translation will be an essential resource for the global conversation about how dancers and choreographers navigate tradition and innovation in contemporary national folk dance choreography. Creating with Roots offers a detailed breakdown of key terms and concepts necessary for understanding Chinese national folk dance and analyzes 37 examples of choreography dating from the 1940s to 2000. The author situates these explanations within the longer history of cultural practice and theory in China and in relation to the international dance discourses of the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and North America

    Pandemic Power

Pandemic Power offers a bold and thought-provoking exploration of how the global response to the Covid pandemic has reshaped our understanding of science, freedom, and democracy. This meticulously researched book examines the political, social, and intellectual shifts that have accompanied lockdowns, censorship, and the instrumentalization of fear, delivering a searing critique of the policies and narratives that defined the Covid era. From past public health scandals to the rise of “digital authoritarianism,” Blaive investigates the dangers of unchecked authority, the troubling role of the media, and the ethical failures of policymakers and public health leaders. Through her in-depth analysis, the author explores critical issues such as surveillance and censorship, the disproportionate impact of lockdowns on the poor and disadvantaged, the capture of public health by the pharmaceutical industry, and the erosion of the rule of law under the guise of public safety. Lastly, this book questions the liberal left’s troubling support for authoritarian practices and its apparent indifference to the aggravation of socio-economic inequalities resulting from the pandemic response it championed. Provocative, insightful, and deeply relevant, Pandemic Power is essential reading for anyone seeking to gain insight into not only how the Covid response has eroded democracy but also how it has contributed to the rise of the extreme right in many countries

Chapter 20 Podcasting and Resistance to Gender-Based Violence across Canada, the United States, and Mexico

    No full text
The Routledge Companion to Gender and Borderlands maps the relationship between gender and borderlands at a global scale and sets the agenda for developing a global composite field of gender and borderlands studies. This interdisciplinary collection seeks to understand the complex nexus at which gender and the borderlands intersect, modelling radical relationality at epistemological, ontological, and activist levels. Going beyond border studies’ frequent site at the U.S.–Mexico Border, this book examines the power relations of borderlands as they play out in, influence, and reflect gender dynamics. Contributors draw on case studies from around the world, and their chapters span diverse fields from anthropology, literature, and history, to political science, religious studies, sociology, and the arts. The Routledge Companion to Gender and Borderlands is an indispensable resource for scholars and students engaged in border studies, gender studies, and the wide range of interlocking disciplines that inform and enrich these fields

Chapter Konstytucyjny limit zadłużenia w doświadczeniach Polski i Hiszpanii

    No full text
