Automated Detection of Media Bias
No full textThis Open Access book explores the automated identification of media bias, particularly focusing on bias by word choice in digital media. The increasing prevalence of digital information presents opportunities and challenges for analyzing language, with cultural, geographic, and contextual factors shaping how content is portrayed. Despite the interdisciplinary nature of media bias research across fields like linguistics, psychology, and computer science, existing work often tackles the problem from limited perspectives, lacking comprehensive frameworks and reliable datasets. The book aims to advance the field by addressing these gaps and proposing a systematic approach to media bias detection. It develops feature-based and deep-learning approaches for automated bias detection, including a BERT-based model and MAGPIE, a multi-task learning model. These methods demonstrate improved performance on established benchmarks, showcasing the potential of deep learning in detecting media bias. Finally, the author addresses the practical applications of automated bias detection, such as enhancing news reading with forewarning messages, text annotations, and political classifiers, and examines the impact of bias on social media engagement
The Necro-President
No full textThis Brief develops the necro-president as a figure through which the collapse of American political life becomes visible. In our present moment of political upheaval, the necro-president reflects how death, not law or the people, has come to shape the meaning of the presidency. The office, once imagined as a source of vitality and democratic promise, now signals exhaustion, spectacle, and symbolic decay. Focusing on the 2024 election, The Necro-President shows how Joe Biden and Donald Trump came to represent two sides of a collapsing republic. Biden, cast as a spectral figure, became a symbol of entropy and decline. Trump, by contrast, positioned himself as a resurrectionist, a messianic leader who could overcome decay and save the republic. What followed was not the return of life to the presidency but the normalization of death as a mode of rule. This critical philosophical intervention moves beyond debates about democratic erosion and constitutional crisis. It asks what happens when political life continues even after the symbols that once gave it meaning have gone hollow. This book is open access

No full textÀ son apogée entre 1945 et 1975, le Moulin-à-Fleur ou la paroisse Saint-Jean-de-Brébeuf se vantait d’être le quartier francophone de Sudbury et de l’Ontario. Il représentait en effet la pierre angulaire pour les autres communautés francophones ainsi que le fondement de la vie culturelle, économique et politique des Franco-Ontariens. Mais l’histoire n’a jamais été racontée de façon détaillée.
Des années de recherches approfondies ont incité les auteurs à se plonger dans de nombreux écrits, articles scientifiques, archives personnelles, articles de journaux et témoignages afin de livrer cette première étude globale.
Divisé en deux volets qui se complètent, ce récit retrace à la fois l’héritage des familles qui se sont battues pour offrir un quotidien et un avenir brillants à leur descendance et la lutte féroce menée par des pionniers, notamment Omer Thériault, Gaétan Gervais et Hélène Gravel, pour la défense culturelle et patrimoniale.
Mais tous ces souvenirs dorment dans les rues de l’ancien quartier ou comme Mme Tregonning-Whissell le disait, «à l’ombre des silos». Ce livre témoigne des origines d’une communauté marquée par le dur labeur des mineurs de l’International Nickel, tout en évoquant le rôle des enseignants qui éveillaient les jeunes générations à un monde de possibilités. Knowledge and Knowing in Media and Film Studies
No full textFor traditional subjects such as History, Art and Science, debate about the nature of knowledge in the school curriculum has produced a growing literature on the relationship between disciplinary knowledge and what is taught in schools. For newer subjects, however, the path is less clear.
Knowledge and Knowing in Media and Film Studies is the first book to grapple with the question for these two related subjects. Steve Connolly argues that, while Media and Film Studies each have a clear epistemological base, consideration of craft skills alongside factual knowledge and criticality has led to the development of different criteria for what constitutes valuable knowledge than in traditional school subjects. The book problematises this difference through a genealogy of both subjects as they appear in the English school curriculum, charting their historical and disciplinary origins within that system. In so doing it finds that, far from being ‘new’ subjects, Media and Film Studies have parallel histories with more established subjects. Using a range of primary and secondary data, including interviews with media and film teachers, case studies and historical sources, the book provides an account of knowledge and knowing in school Media Studies and Film Studies, which both consolidates existing views and proposes some new perspectives.

Minority Memory, Identity, and Reconciliation explores the lives of two often overlooked minority communities: the Greek Orthodox minority in Istanbul, Türkiye, and the Turkish Muslim minority in Western Thrace, Greece. As empires dissolved, the leaders and political elites of new, smaller nations that emerged embarked on population exchanges to increase the ethnic and religious homogeneity of their nation-states. Although these two minority communities differ in religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic terms, they both offer unique perspectives on what happens to people who live on what is perceived as the wrong side of an arbitrarily drawn border.
Drawing from the personal stories of members of these two minority communities regarding their struggle with displacement, discrimination, and cultural assimilation, as well as comprehensive historical analysis, this book examines how historical traumas, national policies, and sociopolitical dynamics have influenced contemporary minority memory and identity formation.
