No full textQue sont devenus les résistantes et résistants étrangers de la Main-d’œuvre immigrée (MOI) du Parti communiste français (PCF) après la guerre ? Comment leur engagement s’est-il poursuivi et dans quel cadre ? C’est à ces questions que répond ce livre, à travers le cas des Juifs communistes yiddishophones, des immigrés originaires d’Europe orientale et arrivés en France dans les années 1920-1930. L’ouvrage interroge la recomposition des relations entre les immigrés, les minorités et le PCF dans le contexte patriotique de la sortie de guerre. Il étudie aussi le rôle des Juifs communistes dans la reconstruction de la vie juive après la Shoah et leur place dans un monde juif bouleversé et remodelé par les années de guerre. En articulant les échelles collective et individuelle, il questionne enfin les identités complexes des Juifs communistes et leur capacité à concilier des allégeances et appartenances – à la France, au monde juif et au PCF – qui entrent parfois en contradiction, en particulier dans le contexte de la guerre froide. À travers un groupe spécifique et une époque particulière, il aspire ainsi à participer de manière nuancée à des réflexions très actuelles, et souvent caricaturales, sur la place des minorités et des immigrés en France et sur leur rapport au politique

Syrian Society in Revolution and War (2011–2024)
No full textIn 2011, Syrians broke the wall of silence and rose up against the Assad regime to reclaim their rights to liberty and dignity. But the popular revolution was crushed by a 14-year war with devastating consequences: half a million people killed or wounded, over 150,000 imprisoned or disappeared. Half the population was forced into exile or displaced within the country. Millions of Syrians endured grief, hunger, and torture—and for all, a deep sense of powerlessness in the face of injustice. Yet, despite the destruction and the persistence of daily violence, these years of war also gave rise to immense hope and profound social transformations that transcended questions of identity and religion. New forms of mobilisation, autonomous civic initiatives, solidarities, and expressions of free speech emerged, asserting that the Syrian people are determined to shape their own future.The contributions gathered in this volume bear witness to the pioneering legacy of a decade of revolution and war that has irreversibly transformed Syrian society. Through case studies ranging from self-governance and wartime economies to shifts in domestic life, gender dynamics, and transitional justice, the book explores the scale of political, social, economic, and familial changes that Syria has undergone. These developments are analysed both within Syria and in exile—in Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan—and are situated within the country’s longer historical trajectory. Taking a broad comparative approach, it explores oral poetry across Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and the Americas. Drawing on global research, Ruth Finnegan, the author of the seminal Oral Literature in Africa, sheds light on key debates such as the nature of oral tradition, the relationship between poetry and society, the differences between oral and written forms, and the role of poets in predominantly non-literate contexts. Written from a primarily anthropological and literary perspective, this study contributes to the socio-cultural aspects of verbal art while also engaging with the literary dimensions of poetry which happens at any given moment to be unwritten. Pediatric Surgical Procedures
No full textYoung pediatric surgeons usually look for a comprehensive textbook updating their surgical knowledge and skills in a simple way. This is the idea behind the project of this series regarding pediatric surgical procedures. We try to update theoretical information, clinical decision-making, and surgical steps via chapters with many illustrations and figures that could guide the surgeon’s decisions and pave the way for competent training and skills improvement. In this Volume I, six chapters are included, starting with a general section covering general anaesthesia background for pediatric laparoscopic surgery. Then, Section 2 presents two reconstructive major procedures with more than 10 figures in each, including cleft lip/palate repair and neurogenic bladder. Topics cover areas from head to neck, chest to inguinal canal, and urinary bladder. Section 3, comprising three chapters, provides updated knowledge on pediatric inguinal hernia in two chapters, while the final chapter offers a comprehensive update on thymectomy in children. This will hopefully appetize the readers for future volumes, as the submission will include a complete view of all surgical specialities dealing with children, infants, and neonates. In this new and updated guide for different pediatric surgery procedures, we hope that we give a hand to all pediatric surgeons, whether residents or specialists, to improve in the wide pediatric surgery field
La République contre l’Empire
No full textLa réintégration des républiques hispano-américaines dans l’horizon impérial européen ouvre une séquence inédite dans l’espace sud-pacifique. Au Pérou, en Bolivie et au Chili l’annexion de Saint-Domingue par l’Espagne (1861), l’expédition du Mexique (1862-1867) et l’occupation des îles Chincha par l’expédition espagnole (1864) font l’objet d’un associationnisme républicain qui appelle à de nouvelles victoires sur les empires.L’ouvrage se concentre sur la quinzaine de sociétés républicaines qui configure l’espace sud-pacifique. Ces sociétés construisent une sphère publique transnationale au nom des droits et des libertés jugés universels et fondamentalement opposés à la corruption de la royauté et à celle de la cour. Leur attachement à l’espace public se décline en de nombreuses formes d’interventions : fondation de journaux, souscriptions, discours, fêtes civiques, poèmes et iconographies politiques, distribution de feuilles volantes, violences voilées. L’analyse des sociétés républicaines ouvre ainsi la voie à une histoire culturelle du politique mettant en exergue la longue tradition républicaine de l’Amérique hispanique. Elle permet de mieux cerner la force avec laquelle l’impérialisme européen se tourne vers l’Est et le Sud dans le second tiers du xixe siècle. Les fondements idéologiques et juridiques de la critique anti-impériale hispano-américaine donneront un siècle plus tard des outils d’importance première aux acteurs de la décolonisation

Get PDFThe volume contributes to the ongoing debate on the role of multi- and plurilingualism in international scientific communication and seeks to contribute to its possible and necessary conceptualisation in contemporary scientific contexts. The emphasis is placed on the interplay between the acquisition of knowledge and the collective and public dimensions of science. This relationship needs to be analysed as a genuine linguistic challenge, since it implies first and foremost an obligation of the language itself rather than of its speakers. From a linguistic perspective, this is exemplified by the processes of translocating scientific knowledge into different languages, contexts and institutions (mainly through the language of academic teaching); the development of specific technical and scientific domains (such as Medicine); the shaping of (multi- and plurilingual) competence in controversies and explanatory processes in teaching contexts; and (also from the perspective of a Philosophy of Knowledge) the interconnection of epistemic constraints and social strategies in the sciences.PublishedIl volume si confronta con il dibattito sul ruolo del multi- e plurilinguismo nelle scienze con l’obiettivo di fornire un contributo alla definizione di quale sia il multi- e plurilinguismo possibile e necessario per l’ambito scientifico nella situazione attuale. L’attenzione si concentra in particolare sulla reciproca dipendenza tra il processo di acquisizione della conoscenza, da un lato, e la dimensione collettiva e pubblica della scienza, dall’altro: un rapporto che rappresenta una vera e propria sfida linguistica, in quanto implica innanzitutto un vincolo per la lingua stessa piuttosto che per i suoi parlanti. Dal punto di vista linguistico, ciò si correla per esempio con: i processi di traslocazione della conoscenza scientifica in lingue, contesti e istituzioni diverse (principalmente attraverso la lingua di insegnamento accademico); lo sviluppo di specifici domini tecnici e di linguaggio scientifico (come la medicina); la costruzione nei contesti di insegnamento di una competenza (multi- e plurilingue) nelle controversie e nei processi esplicativi; e (nella prospettiva anche di una filosofia della conoscenza) con l’interdipendenza dei vincoli epistemici e delle strategie sociali nelle scienze
