Occupant-Oriented Demand Response with Model Predictive Heating Control in a Multi-Zone Residential Building
This book introduces a framework for occupant-oriented demand response in residential buildings with distributed energy sources. Using model predictive control, it optimizes heat pump operation while integrating PV, batteries, and occupants’ thermal satisfaction. Results show over 20% cost savings and enhanced thermal satisfaction. PV integration further reduces costs by over 50%. The framework provides a practical, data-driven approach for versatile, energy-efficient building solutions
New Directions in Digitalisation
This open access book brings together experts from both EU competition law as well fundamental rights backgrounds, discussing the most recent developments in EU legislation on digitalisation. Most prominently, it explores the recently introduced Digital Markets Act (DMA), including a discussion on other related legislative acts and the respective case law. It is aimed mostly at academics and researchers in the area of digitalisation, EU competition law, and the EU Charter, but will also provide some useful insights from practitioners in the field. The internet has long been neglected and exempt from being regulated at EU level. In particular, this concerns the application of fundamental rights. The specific challenges for the digital sphere are numerous; worldwide scope, easy access, interoperability, rapid technological change, fluctuating market conditions, anonymity, disinformation, lack of traceability and thus enforcement, to name but a few. Fundamental EU values, in particular including democracy and the respect for human rights, have suffered as a direct result of these growing problems in the digital sphere. More recently, however, the EU has started to actively regulate the new technologies in order to avoid European values being undermined by an unregulated internet. In the specific field of competition law, the development of new technologies has created many challenges and raised questions for the legislator how to regulate big market players: their cross-border nature, vicissitudes, and enormous market powers allow some of them to be able to escape legal scrutiny under the current set of ex-post rules. The DMA now introduces an ex-ante mechanism for competition law and claims to be aligned with the procedural and institutional rights granted under the Charter, which will be scrutinised and challenged by the various contributions in this book
Ecological Connectivity of Forest Ecosystems
This is an open access book. This professional volume provides scientific background and practical guidance on forest management in light of ecological connectivity. Readers will gain a great understanding of shifting species in response to climate change and the resulting loss of various resources. The main drivers of these variations are the quality of the availability, quantity, and quality of habitats in the landscape, the genetic diversity of species populations, and the ability to navigate through a fragmented landscape matrix. The connectivity of habitats is gaining importance in the combat of both, the biodiversity crisis and the climate change crisis. Improving ecological connectivity, however, does not automatically benefit all species, as the examples described in the book demonstrate. Specific planning tools, active monitoring protocols, and management measures are needed to increase the benefit for species with low dispersal and small population size, which generally fail to migrate. Assisted migration can help to prevent species extinction, but also offer opportunities for pathogens to cross geographical barriers. The vast majority of the known diversity of plants, fungi, vertebrates, and invertebrates depends on forest ecosystems. This volume helps to spread this message and prepare students for their later careers in the forestry sector, while also informing active practitioners and policy makers
Experimental Medicine
Experimental medicine, founded by Claude Bernard in the nineteenth century, decisively oriented medical research and especially modern biology. Amongst other things, it shed light on the role of the immune system, in other word, the means of defence developed by the body to fight microbes.Alain Fischer’s work, at the interface between genetics, immunology, and paediatrics, consists in identifying rare diseases’ genetic and molecular bases, inherited immunodeficiencies (IID), causing vulnerability to infection, auto-inflammatory and auto-immune diseases, and sometimes cancers
Hacia una poética del rap feminista
With renowned female rappers such as Ana Tijoux, Rebeca Lane or Gata Cattana, a new way of understanding rap as an anti-patriarchal, political and literary discourse has emerged in the Spanish-speaking world. Drawing on various disciplines, this study seeks to contextualize feminist rap as a theoretical and aesthetic discourse by women and analyze its potential and challenges in today's globalized society
A Practical Guide to Understanding and Implementing Challenge-Based Learning
This open access book maps the role of challenge-based learning (CBL) in the transformation of higher education pedagogy, towards being sector-informed as well as student-driven. CBL democratises the process of learning by repositioning students as drivers, who are empowered to make decisions on course content, assess needs in the real world and develop opinions. Teachers monitor student learning and engagement and mentor students to express their needs. Chapters showcase existing CBL practices in different settings, and include case studies which detail the practical application of CBL in multiple contexts. The authors develop an emerging theory of practical learning based on the insights of the curriculum designers, practitioners and students. The book will be of interest to researchers, teacher educators/trainers and research supervisors in higher education
The Identity Factor in Chinese Relations with Europe
This book offers a sustained, historically grounded analysis of the identity factor in China-Europe relations. The identity of the modern Chinese state was forged in the context of European emissaries, gunboats, and books. The effects still shape China’s policies towards Europe today, as it becomes a focal point in the great power competition between the US and China. The author argues that identity dilemmas are central to Chinese Europe policies, both past and present. This is reflected in the two-pronged composition of the book; one historical section, combined and complemented with one contemporary section. Case studies of three key political flashpoints between the EU, individual European countries, and China over the last two decades, demonstrates the contemporary relevance of a set of identity issues whose deep roots are uncovered through analysing Chinese political texts from the preceding two centuries. Aimed primarily at scholars and students of Chinese and European international relations, this book will also be of interest to scholars of ontological security theory, constructivism, and other identity-driven approaches to international politics
