No full textThis book provides an important set of critical reflections from a selection of foundational scholars of African media and communication studies through biographical method. The book interrogates the center of mainstream academic scholarship by providing the foundational history and origins of an Africanist conceptual model while highlighting its significance globally. The editors use biographical and life story interviews to critically review the respondents’ interpretations of their key works and arguments in relation to key moments in the field, the continent and globally. Though the book is focussed on recovering pioneering arguments by key thinkers in African media and communication, efforts of individual academics are to be understood in the context of their work with others and within institutions that are networked, locally and globally. By bringing together many of the leading figures of African communication and media studies in a single volume, this book provides a critical corrective to the dearth of knowledge and information about who the key thinkers are and what their key arguments, theories and models for media and communication in African contexts entail. No full textIn der DDR wurde erstmals in der Geschichte des deutschen Schulwesens das Fach Schulgartenunterricht curricular verortet. Es diente dazu, die Schülerinnen und Schüler berufsorientierend für die Landwirtschaft zu interessieren, sie an gesellschaftlich-nützliche Tätigkeiten heranzuführen und bei ihnen die Liebe zur Arbeit und zur Natur zu entwickeln. Die Forschungsarbeit ist eine erste quellenbasierte, umfassende Gesamtdarstellung der ostdeutschen Schulgartenbemühungen von 1945 bis 1989 und soll vor allem eine objektive Einordnung in die Zeitgeschichte unterstützen. Als Quellen dienten u.a. Schriftstücke des Deutschen Pädagogischen Instituts (DPZI) und der Akademie der Pädagogischen Wissenschaften (APW) der DDR. Sie belegen, dass die Schulgartenarbeit als Bestandteil der polytechnischen Bildung und Erziehung nur als komplexes Konstrukt innerhalb des Fächerkanons der allgemeinbildenden Schule verstanden werden kann. Der Band richtet sich an historisch interessierte Leserinnen und Leser im Fokus von Bildung, (Schul-)Garten und Landwirtschaft
Novelty, Innovation and Transformation in Educational Ethnographic Research
Get PDFThis edited volume tackles the theoretical, empirical and methodological questions of how novelty can be determined in and through educational ethnographic research.
Responding to the increasing need for new and innovative methodological and theoretical foundations for the field, chapters draw on a variety of empirical, critically examined data sets such as observation protocols of pedagogical practice, digital communication and visual representations to bridge the gap between empirical and theoretical approaches, ultimately combining different traditions and discourses within educational ethnography. Collating perspectives and accounts from over 30 authors based in European centers of excellence such as Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Denmark, the book provides an epistemological reflection on what we can understand as ‘new’ in theoretical and methodological research.
This volume will be of use to researchers, academics and postgraduate students involved with research methods in education, ethnography and the theory of education more broadly. Those involved with research design, innovation and European research methods will also find the volume of use.

Contemporary Chinese Novels in Translation since 1978
No full textThis book aims to complement the traditional focus of translation studies, which has primarily centered on translating English into other languages. It presents a comprehensive analysis of the reverse translation trajectory, exploring the movement of Chinese literature into the core English literary domain. The book aims to explore the ideological and sociological dynamics that underlie the translation of contemporary Chinese novels. This is achieved through an examination of the translation selection process, translation paratexts, and the roles of translation agents. Case studies are employed to illustrate specific linguistic, literary, and cultural challenges within translation. It dissects the cultural and literary implications of translating genres such as women's writing, science fiction, and Internet literature. The argument presented is that the translation of peripheral literature is indispensable in shaping global literature. Beyond its literary implications, the book identifies the political significance inherent in such reverse translation endeavors. It suggests that the translation of Chinese literature holds notable political interest for the Chinese government, which aims to reshape China's image and bolster the nation's soft power through literary translation. The Biopolitics of Childhood in the Long American 19th Century

The study of nineteenth-century biopolitics offers a theoretical framework that promises to increase our understanding of how modern democracies manage their subjects. Recent scholarship has invigorated interrogations into forms of state governance that operate at the level of population, a biological phenomenon defined as a group of individuals linked by racialized fictions of biological commonality. This collection seeks to recognize and position critical childhood studies as essential to these interrogations. The essays theorize the role of representations of children and childhood as tools of biopolitical governance in America in the long nineteenth century. They variously explore how the interrelated and overlapping qualities integral to our understandings of the child and childhood are readily deployed by biopolitical power. Familles sans frontières ?
No full textSince the financial crisis of the late 2000s, young adults from Southern Europe – and Italy in particular – have taken to the road of exile once again. These new migrations, still little studied, are presented in the media as a brain drain. Through an ethnographic survey of Italians who have recently arrived in Paris, this book proposes a different approach, focusing on the role of the family. The new Italian migrations involve young graduates from a precarious middle class, who are highly dependent on support from their families of origin. Three Italian households living in Paris were followed over a two-year period, along with the members of their “practical kin” involved in their daily lives, and residing in Italy, France and Europe. The book revisits the concept of the “transnational family”, usually studied in the context of migration from the global South, to show the specific forms it takes in the context of European integration. While family reunification policies are becoming increasingly restrictive for migrants from countries outside the Schengen area, the free movement regime grants European citizens a “kinship privilege”, generating new ways of doing family across borders and original forms of transnational social protection
