Jerome’s Sources in His Translation of the Hebrew Bible
Get PDFAt the close of the fourth century CE, Jerome of Stridon—renowned Latin scholar, theologian, and priest—undertook the monumental task of translating the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible into Latin. The result of this effort, now known as the Vulgate, has long been regarded as a foundational text of Western Christianity. In this volume, Paul Rodrigue investigates the sources that Jerome may have drawn upon in the process of translation. Far from being just a rendering of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Vulgate emerges as a layered and multifaceted translation, shaped not only by the Hebrew-Aramaic text but also by a broad array of additional sources. Through a series of carefully chosen case studies, Rodrigue analyses a number of verses from the Joseph narrative in Genesis, as well as from Daniel and Esther. Each Vulgate passage is meticulously compared with its equivalents in the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible, the Septuagint, the Latin translations of the Septuagint, the Greek versions of Aquila, Symmachus, and Theodotion, and—where applicable—the Targumim and rabbinic writings. This comparative approach reveals Jerome’s engagement with texts in four languages—Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin—and highlights his responses to both Jewish and Christian exegetical traditions. Importantly, the selected translations span Jerome’s career as a translator of the Hebrew-Aramaic Bible: Daniel at its outset (392–393), Genesis mid-career (late 390s), and Esther at its close (404–405). As such, Rodrigue’s analysis offers a chronologically nuanced study of Jerome’s evolving translation method (sensus de sensu), providing invaluable insight for scholars of biblical studies, late antiquity, translation theory, and the transmission of sacred texts

No full textIn the historical period between the last decades of the thirteenth century and the first half of the fourteenth century, famine was one of the basic forms of inequality; in the economic systems of those times, which were largely characterized by the presence of the market and the circulation of money, its appearance, in its true sense of an increase in the prices of human food, and in particular those of cereals, prevented access to the market for all those who did not have sufficient income or any other right to food. At the same time, the increase in the price of agricultural products was also a sign of an economic crisis. All of this gave rise to great inequalities and very serious social conflicts, which the political authorities sought to control by means of special offices responsible for monitoring the continuity of food supplies to urban markets. The essay examines how all these economic and political changes took place in the city of Rome and in the territory from which the necessary agricultural products were imported

No full textThis book offers a micro-global history of humanitarianism and medical care during the ‘long’ Second World War, challenging the traditional Eurocentric chronological boundaries of 1939/1945. It takes as its starting point the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, which led to the progressive dislocation of the League of Nations, with Japanese, German and Soviet departures in the 1930s. It ends with the termination of the Korean War in 1953 and the subsequent dismantling of the first United Coalition and UN peace enforcement operation. This periodisation allows the contributors to consider the role of extra-European spaces and conflicts, such as the Italo-Ethiopian War, conflict between Peru and Ecuador, and the Second Sino-Japanese War. Using innovative methodological approaches, including a focus on medical care and intimacy (Chapters 1 and 4), this book is neither structured around breaks and ruptures, nor linear shifts from ‘imperial humanitarianism’ to ‘neo-humanitarianism’ or ‘amateurism’ to ‘professionalism’. Instead of creating a metanarrative and an overarching story of humanitarianism during the long Second World War, it considers the slow, messy and ambivalent transformation of humanitarian actors’ relations to the suffering of distant others through studying humanitarian encounters, practices, spaces and affects. Paying close attention to actors such as French colonial doctors (Chapter 2), Swiss ICRC delegates (Chapters 3 and 10), Egyptian relief workers (Chapter 4), Chinese-style physicians (Chapter 5), Peruvian and Ecuadorian nurses (Chapter 6) and American members of the Unitarian Service Committee (Chapter 7), this book does not erase the important differences between them but provides a more holistic story of humanitarianism: one that recognises its complexity and the intensification of circulations from one conflict and front to another

The interaction mechanism and coordinated development of the two are important research directions of academic concern. On the one hand, transportation networks are the skeleton of national and regional development, and the comprehensive transportation system provided by highways, railways, aviation, and water promotes the development of territorial space. On the other hand, the pressure of transportation infrastructure and transportation activities on the protection of territorial space such as ecological and agricultural land is also increasing. The question of how to coordinate the relationship between development and protection, use the network effect of transportation to empower regional development, and improve the environmental impact of the transportation field, thereby enhancing regional sustainability, is a key scientific issue that needs to be studied urgently.
