No full textThe article examines the conflict between copyright and freedom of expression, focusing on exceptions and limitations that support “user rights”. It explores how, despite copyright is protecting authors and incentivizing creation, some exceptions are necessary to ensure freedom of expression and access to information. In particular, it discusses exceptions allowing the use of works for educational, research, and cultural purposes, proposing a liberal view where such exceptions are not a “necessary evil”, but a safeguard of public interests. The article concludes with a reflection on Fabiani’s theory, treating exceptions as subjective rights, empowering beneficiaries to defend them against infringements

No full textThis scholarly book explores the transformative role of proverbs in cultural education, preservation and scholarly discourse in South Africa. It emphasises the importance of integrating indigenous African knowledge into academic spaces to support decolonisation, (re)Africanisation and transformation. Proverbs are presented as tools for promoting multilingualism, multiculturalism, social cohesion and mutual respect in South Africa's diverse society. The book addresses the United Nations' (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 (quality education), SDG 5 (gender equity), SDG 9 (innovation) and SDG 10 (reduce inequality). It serves as a teaching resource for proverbs in Northern Sotho/Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Xitsonga, isiZulu, isiXhosa, isiNdebele, siSwati and/or Tshivenḓa (Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni and Venḓa, i.e. Soshanguve), as well as Chichewa and Shona, supporting cross-cultural understanding. Grounded in a scholarly project on a multilingual proverbs dictionary, the book applies theoretical frameworks such as conceptual metaphor theory, ethnopragmatics and translation quality assessment to analyse proverbs. This interdisciplinary approach bridges linguistics, anthropology and digital humanities, offering fresh insights into the semantics and cultural significance of proverbs. The chapters in the book explore themes like proverbs in music, their intersection with patriarchy, and translation quality assessment. Targeted at scholars and experts in languages, literature, linguistics and digital humanities, the book advances the study of proverbs while fostering cultural awareness and sensitivity. It highlights the value of proverbs as linguistic and cultural assets, enriching academic and practical applications across disciplines

The commentary focuses on some of the most relevant aspects addressed by the speakers: the effects of epidemics on social mobility, the relationship between mobility and economic inequality, the resistance of the upper classes to the rise of the 'new people,' the interrelations between geographical mobility and social advancement, the role of emulation and ostentation in climbing social hierarchies. Shifting regimes
No full textThis book deals with six critical junctures in early modern Sweden between 1500 and 1810, intense periods of change when the prevailing system of government was challenged and replaced by something different – a new political regime. Drawing on both history and the social sciences, this book presents a new interpretation of Sweden’s early modern political history. First, each critical juncture’s course of events is analysed, and key political actors’ incentives and motives are identified. The impact and effects of each regime shift are explained using three analytical key concepts: state capacity, impartiality, and political participation. Second, the various regime shifts are compared and the long-term effects of the early modern changes on state formation and democratization are discussed. How and in what ways did the turbulent changes in government affect Sweden’s subsequent development into a modern, democratic state? Sweden’s conflict-ridden history is highly relevant for understanding the process of state formation in early modern Europe. In comparative studies, sixteenth-century Sweden is sometimes highlighted as a pioneer; a dynastic state that organized an efficient fiscal bureaucracy to finance military expansion. In other contexts, Sweden’s representative institutions of the eighteenth century have been an example of participatory or even proto-democratic forms of government. However, the two periods have rarely been compared to explain similarities and differences, or why the first period transformed into the second. This book takes a holistic approach to the period 1538–1810, explaining how and why the shifting regimes influenced political and social development. The analysis shows the uneven character of the ongoing struggle between Sweden’s power elites and social groups demanding political inclusion. The ideal balance between a strong state and an organized society proved hard, if not impossible, to realize in the early modern period. Democratization in Sweden continued to be an uneven process well into the twentieth century

«Nell’interesse dell’augustissima casa»: Asburgo, Lombardia austriaca e feudi imperiali nell’età delle riforme
No full textIn the mid-eighteenth century, numerous imperial fiefs still existed along the borders or within the territories of Austrian Lombardy. These were small entities directly dependent on the Holy Roman Empire and therefore enjoyed full jurisdictional and fiscal autonomy. Such a condition made them perfect refuges and bases of operation for bandits and smugglers, who plagued Habsburg lands, systematically jeopardizing public security and fiscal revenues. These issues, in the midst of ongoing reforms, could not fail to be taken seriously, and their resolution became, in the eyes of the Austrian authorities, an unavoidable necessity.
This book aims to reconstruct the policies implemented by the Habsburgs toward these fiefs with the objective of suppressing the aforementioned phenomena. These policies were part of a broader process of territorial, fiscal, and jurisdictional rationalization and standardization, as well as the dismantling of still vast and diverse pockets of privilege and autonomy. However, such policies had to contend, on the one hand, with entrenched local dynamics and specificities, and on the other, with the only apparently straightforward—yet often delicate—coexistence of imperial and royal prerogatives within the House of Austria.PublishedIn pieno Settecento erano ancora molti i feudi imperiali presenti a ridosso o all’interno dei confini della Lombardia austriaca. Si trattava di piccole entità direttamente dipendenti dal Sacro Romano Impero, dotate pertanto di piena autonomia giurisdizionale e fiscale. Tale condizione le rendeva dei perfetti rifugi e basi d’appoggio per banditi e contrabbandieri, che infestavano i domini asburgici mettendone sistematicamente a repentaglio la pubblica sicurezza e gli introiti fiscali. Questioni, queste ultime, che nel pieno delle riforme non potevano non essere prese seriamente in considerazione, e la cui risoluzione nella mente delle autorità austriache divenne improrogabile.
Questo libro intende ricostruire le politiche attuate dagli Asburgo nei confronti di tali feudi con l’obiettivo di stroncare i fenomeni di cui sopra. Politiche inserite in un più ampio contesto di razionalizzazione e uniformazione territoriale, fiscale e giurisdizionale, di smantellamento di ancora ampie e variegate sacche di privilegio e di autonomia. Politiche che dovettero tuttavia fare i conti da un lato con consolidate dinamiche e specificità locali, e dall’altro con la solo apparentemente risolutiva e anzi spesso delicata compresenza delle prerogative imperiali e regie in seno a Casa d’Austria
