No full textWhat is the role of the humanities at the start of 21st century? In the last few decades, the various disciplines of the humanities (history, linguistics, literary studies, art history, media studies) have encountered a broad range of challenges, related to the future of print culture, to shifts in funding strategies, and to the changing contours of culture and society. Several publications have addressed these challenges as well as potential responses on a theoretical level. This coedited volume opts for a different strategy and presents accessible case studies that demonstrate what humanities scholars contribute to concrete and pressing social debates about topics including adoption, dementia, hacking, and conservation. These “engaged” forms of humanities research reveal the continued importance of thinking and rethinking the nature of art, culture, and public life
Visions of the End in Medieval Spain
No full textThis is the first study to bring together all twenty-nine extant copies of the medieval Commentary on the Apocalypse, which was originally written by Spanish monk Beatus of Liébana. John Williams, a renowned expert on the Commentary, shares a lifetime of study and offers new insights on these strikingly illustrated manuscripts. As he shows, the Commentary responded to differing monastic needs within the shifting context of the Middle Ages. Of special interest is a discussion of the recently discovered Geneva copy: one of only three commentaries to be written outside of the Iberian Peninsula, this manuscript shows both close affinities to the Spanish model and fascinating deviations from it in terms of its script and style of illustrations

No full textPublishedPolonya’nın 1795’teki taksimi sonrasında 19. yüzyıl Türk-Leh ilişkileri, Lehlerin bağımsızlık mücadelesi ve Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun bu mücadeleye desteği olarak karakterize edilebilir. Bu dönemde Osmanlı devlet kadrolarında istihdam edilen ve iz bırakan birçok Lehin Osmanlı serüveni görülmeye değerdir. Diğer yandan Birinci Dünya Savaşı hem Polonya hem Türkiye için bir dönüm noktasıdır. Polonya 11 Kasım 1918’de bağımsızlığını tekrar kazanırken bu savaşta yenik grupta yer alan Osmanlı İmparatorluğu için bazı topraklarını kayıp ve işgal süreci başlamıştır. Diğer taraftan Anadolu’da başlayan milli mücadele hareketi Ankara Hükümeti’nin doğuşunu, Mustafa Kemal Paşa’nın önderliğinde işgallerin püskürtülmesini ve yeni Türkiye’nin şekillenmesini beraberinde getirmiştir. İşte bu noktada Türk-Leh ilişkileri için önemli bir dönemeç 23 Temmuz 1923’te Lozan’da, Lozan Barış Antlaşması’ndan bir gün önce imzalanan Türkiye-Polonya Dostluk Antlaşması’dır. Bu antlaşma 20. yüzyıl Türkiye-Polonya ilişkilerine zemin oluşturmuş, bu sayede diplomatik ilişkiler hızlı bir biçimde başlamış ve siyasi ve ekonomik temelde gelişmiştir.
İki savaş arası dönemde gelişen ilişkilerde, İkinci Dünya Savaşı farklı bir sürece sahne olmuştur. Polonya’nın savaşın başladığı ve büyük zarar gördüğü bir ülke olarak, Türkiye’nin ise bu savaşta savaş dışı kalma politikalarını yürüten bir ülke olarak görünümünde birçok Lehin 19. yüzyılda olduğu gibi yine Türkiye’ye gelmesi tarihsel ortaklıklar ve müşterek paydaların bir neticesidir. Soğuk Savaş döneminde ikili münasebetler, farklı iki kutupta yer alan ülkeler olmalarına rağmen belirli bir düzeyde devam edebilmiştir. 1989’da demokrasiye geçişi ardından 1999’da NATO üyeliği ile Türkiye ile ortak paydada buluşan Polonya, 2004’teki AB üyeliği sonrası Türkiye’nin AB üyeliğine tarihi dostluk icabı destek olan ülkelerden olmuştur. Günümüzde siyasi, ekonomik, kültürel, eğitim, güvenlik, spor, tarım vb. başlıklarda yoğun ve pozitif bir karakter gösteren ilişkilerin hacminin ilerleyen süreçte daha da büyümesi beklenmektedir.
İşte kısaca panoraması verilen Türkiye-Polonya ilişkilerinin son iki yüz yıllık birikimi, 1923 TürkiyePolonya Dostluk Antlaşması’nın yüzüncü yıldönümü vesilesiyle İstanbul Üniversitesi ev sahipliğinde ve Polonya Cumhuriyeti İstanbul Başkonsolosluğu iş birliği ile 27 Eylül 2023 tarihinde düzenlenen konferansta dikkat çekilmiş ve bu alanda yeni araştırmalara ve bulgulara dayalı metinlerin ortaya çıkmasına zemin oluşturmuştur. Böylece tarafımızca edite edilen bu kitap hazırlanarak bilim dünyasına sunulmuştur. Kitabın hazırlanmasında ve basılmasında emeği geçen yazarlarımıza, hakemlerimize, sekreteryayı yürüten Arş. Gör. Remzi Can Uğur’a, büyük destekleri ve kitaba takdimleri dolayısıyla İstanbul Üniversitesi Rektörü Prof. Dr. Osman Bülent Zülfikar’a, Sn. Başkonsolos Witold Leśniak’a ve İstanbul Üniversitesi Yayınevi’ne teşekkürlerimizi arz ederiz. Molecular Research in Obesity
No full textThe prevalence of obesity continues to rise worldwide, contributing to an increased burden of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases. While environmental factors play a significant role in this epidemic, genetic predisposition and dysfunctions in adipose tissue remain critical determinants of disease onset and progression. The classical understanding of obesity, centered on energy imbalance and excessive fat accumulation, is being expanded thanks to emerging molecular insights into metabolic regulation, chronic low-grade inflammation, and adipose tissue plasticity. This Special Issue explores the interplay between traditional and novel mechanisms underlying obesity, including the molecular pathways regulating appetite, thermogenesis, adipocyte differentiation, and systemic inflammation. It also examines the roles of genetic and epigenetic factors in individual susceptibility and disease progression. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing innovative therapeutic strategies for preventing and managing obesity and its related complications. This Reprint provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in obesity research, highlighting new potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets that could transform future interventions in metabolic health

These may be environmental (lack of resources, feelings of loneliness or social isolation, etc.) or biomedical (loss of appetite, taste, or smell, slower metabolism, decreased sense of thirst, pain in teeth and gums, etc.). This exposes older adults to numerous potential complications such as cardiovascular problems, phosphocalcium metabolism disorders, sarcopenia, functional dependence, and death. The challenge for specialists in the field of ageing is, therefore, to manage and ideally prevent these nutritional disorders to promote successful ageing. The Former “Yugoslavia Tribunal” as Monument of Justice
No full textAfter Nuremberg, there is probably no other place where the future of Europe has been so definitively tested and safeguarded as in The Hague. The iconic building of the former International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has become a global symbol of international law and transitional justice since its establishment in 1993. As the direct successor to the International Military Tribunal of Nuremberg in 1945-1946, this UN tribunal concluded 25 years of unprecedented success in investigating and trying all major war crimes suspects from the wars in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s. It also made history through the first application of the UN Genocide Convention in the trial of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. This report addresses the question of how the significance of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, as a heritage and memorial site for its many (inter)national stakeholders, can be preserved following the withdrawal of the UN and a possible redevelopment of the site
European Union and Brazil: innovative and sustainable strategies for cooperation
