Molecular Mechanisms of Bioactive Nutrients Promoting Health through Gut Microbiota 2.0
No full textThe present Special Issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences focuses on the relevant and rapidly developing topic of gut microbiota research. As the articles within this issue highlight, the human gut microbiota plays a critical role in human health. Dietary intake directly influences gut microbiota composition, and the resulting changes in gut metabolites can have profound effects on the host. This Special Issue brings together the latest findings on the intricate relationship between bioactive food components, gut microbiota, colon health, and chronic metabolic diseases. The gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem composed of trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses. These microbes play essential roles in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and even mental health. Importantly, the composition of the gut microbiota is not static; it is constantly changing in response to diet, lifestyle factors, and medications. The articles within this issue highlight the vast potential of dietary interventions to modulate gut microbiota composition and promote health. As our understanding of this complex ecosystem continues to grow, we can expect to see the development of novel therapeutic strategies for a wide range of chronic diseases

No full textDer vorliegende Open Access-Band leuchtet den Zusammenhang von Übersetzung und Raum in spezifisch frühneuzeitlichen Untersuchungssettings exemplarisch aus. Dazu setzt er von zwei Seiten an: Erstens fragen Beiträge aus Germanistik, Judaistik, Latinistik und Romanistik sowie Kunst- und Philosophiegeschichte nach Übersetzungsräumen. Dadurch geraten jene kulturellen Transit- oder Kontaktzonen in den Blick, die durch Übersetzungs- und Mehrsprachigkeitsdynamiken geprägt sind. Zweitens fokussiert der Open Access-Band auf Raumübersetzungen. Hier stehen jene sprachlichen und kulturellen Übersetzungspraktiken im Mittelpunkt, die fremdkulturellen Begegnungen und Konfrontationssituationen erwachsen und sich in die kolonialen Diskurse der Frühen Neuzeit einschreiben. This open access volume illuminates the connection between translation and space in specifically Early Modern settings from two angles: Firstly the assembled contributions from the disciplines of German, Jewish studies, Latin and Romance as well as art, history and philosophy seek to identify translation spaces, those cultural transit or contact zones distinguished by high translation and multilingualism dynamics. Secondly, this volume draws attention to spatial translations. Here the focus is on linguistic and cultural translation practices that emerged from foreign-cultural encounters and confrontations and inscribed themselves in the colonial discourses of the Early Modern period

No full textThe comments made at the round table focused first of all on the sources (fiscal, notarial and other) and methodology (the necessary combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches, including prosopography and individual trajectories) for the study of social mobility. Secondly, the need for context was stressed in order to better understand and explain the results. In particular, in the chronology that concerns us, the rise and development of the so-called fiscal state, from the 14th century onwards, with the need for an ever larger and more specialised administrative bureaucracy, as well as the opportunities for prosperity and social advancement, through the tenure of political posts or the pursuit of an administrative career. Orchard Management under Climate Change
No full textClimate is one of the most important limiting factors for fruit production, and climate change affects a range of physiological processes in fruit tree species, such as their phenological stages, bud dormancy and bud burst, pollination and fruiting, growth and fruit quality. Research shows that erratic weather events such as extreme heat, drought and sudden frost are responsible for stress in fruit trees, which can negatively affect fruit quality, sugar content, acidity and overall flavor. In a warming world, orchards face a range of environmental challenges that affect growth and productivity. Farmers need to adapt to protect their crops from the effects of climate change in this scenario. Fruit trees pose unique adaptation challenges for growers. Likewise, researchers are facing an increasing demand for studies on this topic to find solutions for managing orchards under changing climatic conditions and extreme weather events. Because of the importance of the topic, ongoing studies should be encouraged and shared quickly so that readers can find approaches and results that address their questions. Climate change is a very topical and relevant issue for orchard management and is addressed in various ways in this Reprint. Contributions cover sustainable cultural practices in different orchards under different climatic conditions, as well as long-term studies on the effects of global warming on grapevines
Memories Set in Stone—How Visitors Make Sense of Memorials
No full textIn this open access book, Larissa Hugentobler explores the world of public memorials: highly visible, and at times contentious, media, which communicate a nation’s values and ideals – its public memory. By celebrating a selection of a nation’s history, the memorial landscape has long rendered marginalized groups virtually invisible. This book focuses on two rare, celebratory, U.S. memorials in Washington, DC., dedicated to a member of a marginalized community: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The author explores how visitors experience the two cultural sites, including their narratives about King and the Civil Rights Movement. For a holistic understanding, Hugentobler combines analyses of visitor experiences on site and on Instagram with expert interviews and autoethnographies. This allows for insights into the importance of celebratory memorials to individuals from marginalized communities and why those memorials matter to visitors. By acknowledging that the memorial experience is not limited to the time and space of a visit, this book begins to answer the urgent question of the roles of the offline and online realms in commemoration and highlights how each can contribute to a memorial landscape that is meaningful to a variety of people
