    30: Migrants’ food security amidst the changing COVID-19 containment measures in urban China

    COVID-19 exacerbated the economic, social, and political vulnerabilities of migrants and increased their food insecurity in cities of the Global South. Compared to residents, migrants are more food insecure due to their limited access to resources. Based on a secondary literature review and an online survey conducted in Wuhan and Nanjing in 2020, this chapter illustrates the four major phases of China's COVID-19 containment policies, shifting from lockdown measures to the “dynamic zero-COVID policy”. The chapter argues that migrants experienced pandemic-induced food access challenges differently from their local counterparts, demonstrating a higher level of food insecurity due to increased food expenditure, restricted mobility, and income loss. Furthermore, while it was the impact of COVID-19 that caused an increase in food insecurity, food insecurity has been entrenched following the downturn of the economy. Therefore, improving migrants’ food security demands structural changes with the aim of generating economic opportunities.Publishe

    Flowing Progress: Transforming the Danube Through Infrastructure focuses on how different political regimes and forms of governance have imagined and technologically transformed the most international river in the world. Multidisciplinary and drawing on methodologies of history, anthropology of infrastructure, and science, technology, and society, this collection explores the tensions between the river and its natural pulses, the humans that populate its floodplains, state agencies, and infrastructure. The book engages the concept of disturbance to point out the circular and spiraling dynamics between hydrological processes and technopolitical and economic practices. Disturbance denotes a specific type of long-term dynamic between human attempts to control the Danube, the material systems they implemented to achieve these goals, and the agency of the river that both enabled the functioning of infrastructure and the breakdown of such arrangements. It draws particular attention to the concerted efforts to contain and optimize the Danube’s flow, adding layer after layer of dams, channels, and pipes that could potentially escalate the power of a leashed river. Taking a longer historical perspective from the sixteenth century until today, the volume provides a variety of relevant case studies and local contexts in the Ottoman and Habsburg empires, and their successor states Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia which show different ways of how humans have imagined and coped with this mighty river

    Drug development strategies assumed that a single-target mechanism of action is the best approach for obtaining target-specific therapeutics. This model aims to treat specific conditions and is associated with fewer adverse events. However, many drugs and natural compounds interact with multiple receptors, resulting in polyvalent pharmacological and pleiotropic therapeutic activities through multitarget interactions. This development, in turn, has shifted the paradigm from a “one-target, one-drug” mode to a “network-target, multiple-component therapeutics” mode. Developing techniques for monitoring the expression of genes, proteins, and metabolites in their entirety in cells, tissues, and organs formed the basis for the new field of systems biology. The essence of network pharmacology is to evaluate how a study drug interacts with therapeutic targets, their associated signaling pathways involved in biological and physiological processes, and the functions linked to diseases, ultimately aiming to achieve a beneficial therapeutic effect. Network pharmacology, a relatively new discipline, has emerged recently and is rapidly developing. In 2024 alone, approximately 9000 publications on network pharmacology from around the world were cited and indexed in the PubMed database
