Modern Hebrew in Israel
Scholars have been asserting that there are no dialects in Modern Hebrew, which makes Israel an interesting case for variationist linguistic theorising. This pioneering book investigates categories Hebrew speakers use for their classification of linguistic variation. Relying on interviews and experimental data, the categories are analyzed from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives
Sanat Tarihi Yazıları Cumhuriyetimizin 100. Yılına Armağan / On the Republic’s Centenary: Essays on the History of Art
This commemorative volume, prepared by the Department of Art History of Istanbul University, the prestigious and deep-rooted university of our country, and contributing to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of our Republic, consists of articles that reveal the developments in the field of Art History throughout the century-long history of the Republic, and aims to address the contributions of the Republic to the study of Art History
The interest of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of our Republic, in Archaeology and Art History, has been noted in many historical occurrences. During his visit to Istanbul University on Monday, December 15, 1930, Ataturk first attended the 1st and 3rd year classes of the Faculty of Law, then met with the Rector of the period, Prof. Dr. Muammer Raşit, and other professors, and brought the subject of legends to “Accadians and Hittites”. In response to the answers he received to the questions he asked during this time, Atatürk said, “History should be based on archaeological, paleographic and philological findings, not on legends”, and particularly emphasized this issue. With this statement, Atatürk reveals his perspective on science, and actually states that real history can only be written correctly by saving it from legends, and by using scientific branches such as Archaeology-Art History, Paleography and Philology. Starting from this idea, it was understood how important it is to carry a nation with its past into the future, and to create new cultural policies, a social consciousness and the concept of being a nation, and therefore, ‘Art’ and its history began to gain importance and develop as a branch of science in tandem with the Republic.
These days, when we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of our Republic, we want to present this book where different angles of research – by experts in their field - have been written as a contribution to this celebration. Their contributions are of value in order to understand and draw a view on the importance of Art History in the Republican period. From the new museological approach, to more conscious conservation policies, from the importance of painting in the formation of the nation-state understanding to the new architecture of governmental offices, which are the institutional and physical symbols of the state in many cities, from the Republican-era Turkey representations in the exhibitions abroad to the architects of the Early Republican period and the different types of structures they built, all have been taken in consideration.
Ara Altun, together with Şennur Kaya, who has served in our department for many years, gives a panorama of the eighty-year history of Istanbul University Art History Department, from its establishment to its administrative structure, from its excavations to its periodical publications, from the contribution of the scientific activities it organizes in the field, and from the faculty members serving in the department, and its history from the past to the present.
Doing Patient
The Question of Emergence
This book takes the relationship between physics and sociology as its subject, focusing on the philosophical dispute between emergentism and reductionism. It argues that the mystery behind emergence disappears when we abandon the lawful understanding of causality in favor of a powers view. Adopting a critical realist perspective, it offers a completely novel approach, arguing that the mystery associated with emergence is an artifact of the Humean covering law model of causality assumed by both sides of the reductionism and emergentist debate. In this debate, both reductionists and emergentists have focused on how a single whole or composite relates to its parts and have commonly operated with an understanding of causality in terms of lawful regularities among events. As a result, emergentists have been left with a dilemma: Either admit that laws governing higher-level behavior can be explained by lower-level laws, which is reductionism, or leave the existence of the higher-level laws a mystery. The first book-length publication that addresses – and attempts to resolve – the debate over emergence and reductionism and that gives attention to emergence across the ontological levels from physics to social behavior, it will have a lively readership among critical realists. It will also be of interest to philosophers of mind, philosophers of science, social scientists, and theoretically oriented practitioners in chemistry, biology, and psychology
This work brings together a set of studies in homage to Maria do Céu Fialho, Hellenist, professor and researcher at the University of Coimbra. The structuring axis of these two volumes is Peace and War. Around this binomial are organized reflections by specialists from different scientific fields: Ancient Greece and Rome, but also other areas such as History and Philosophy, Literature and Reception Studies, Religion and Politics. The contributions focus on themes as diverse as creation, love and celebration, or destruction, power and violence. Human ambivalence and complexity, metonymically represented by the hands, traverses the cultural and historical contexts of Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, through to the Modern and Contemporary periods.
Artist or Imposter!
This scholarly book aims to provoke a conscience-inducing disruption in arts teaching and learning practices within South African higher education. It advocates for a critical, humanising and compassionate pedagogy that responds to the daunting domestic realities faced by students – realities that were further intensified by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. Through emancipatory pedagogy and arts-based methodologies, this book empowers research participants as co-researchers, granting them the capacity to create and share knowledge in contexts where their voices are often marginalised. Employing an autoethnographic methodology that utilises reflective–reflexive, arts-based approaches, Artist or Imposter! Breaking the barriers and ‘dancing’ the data explores art forms with humanising impulses as pedagogical interventions, opening fertile pathways toward embodied and empowering learning. It makes theoretical and epistemological contributions to new understandings of social constructivism in higher education, reframing pedagogy as a form of crisis-driven activism. In doing so, the authors invite open engagement with non-traditional and transdisciplinary methodologies, while also offering practical insights to strengthen higher education practices to support student well-being and academic success. Challenging the guardianship of ‘unadulterated’ scientific research and rigid notions of disciplinary integrity, this book traverses methodological confines, defying and transcending dictated boundaries. It foregrounds stereotypical negativity around preconceived notions of epistemological paradigms and their constraining effect on research communities. By exposing how an overemphasis on epistemology can stunt intellectual freedom, the authors argue for more transformative research practices, where embodied practice and collaborative knowledge production provide new ways of understanding and navigating students’ lived experiences. This book will be especially relevant for scholars and researchers in higher education, critical pedagogy and the humanities. Its unique combination of theoretical depth, methodological innovation and practical insight makes it especially relevant for academics seeking to rethink established paradigms, expand their methodological repertoire, and engage in scholarship that responds directly to the challenges of student well-being, equity and transformation

The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing
