Changing the Greek World: Scenari di trasformazione nel secolo di Alessandro

    No full text
The 4th century B.C. can be considered a saeculum brevis, situated between the end of a pan-Hellenic conflict, which had decreed the failure of a radical democracy, and the establishment of the Macedonian kingdom. In between, one finds critical reflections of a society, such as the Athenian one, incapable of accepting a secondary role in the political, economic and cultural history of the Hellas, and which reacts by attempting to readapt the old schemes of its golden age to the new feeling of Greek man. The twelve contributions collected in this book aim to highlight different aspects of those changes which characterize an extraordinary period, a veritable building site for the creation of a new world.

Band I widmet sich den Themen »Welt« (u.a. kosmische Entwicklung, ökologische Fehlentwicklung, Verständnishorizont, Schöpfung, autonome Wirklichkeit), »Gott« (u.a. vollkommenstes Wesen, absoluter Geist, Geheimnis, Herr der Geschichte, Liebe) und »Gottes Wort und Offenbarung« (u.a. Bibel als Sprachhandlung Gottes, Offenbarung als universale Selbstmitteilung Gottes)

    Ethnicizing Europe

    No full text
Ethnicizing Europe focuses on the dynamics of interethnic violence in Europe between the two world wars. The new international system that was enshrined by the Versailles peace treaties after World War I did not bring stability to East-Central Europe. Rather, it resulted in a host of conditions like self-determination, international oversight, revolutionary political ideas, and democratic processes, which eventually gave new meaning to already established conflicts, as well as igniting new conflicts in the region. This book opens with a discussion of the theoretical scholarship on ethnicity before proceeding to specific case studies investigating the different ways in which ethnicity was enacted and contested during a period of European transformation, focusing mostly on ethnically heterogeneous locales. Rather than concentrating on either political violence or ethnonationalism, this collection brings these two literatures together to show how ethnicization, the legal concepts of citizenship, and violence were intertwined in post-Versailles Europe, not only shaping the period between the wars, but also the Europe we know today. The book concludes with an afterword by Tara Zahra, which expands this perspective to the wider transatlantic region

Die digitale Welt als symbolische Form

    No full text
We live in a world that is increasingly dominated and determined by digital technologies. But what exactly is »digital«? And what does it mean to be a subject in a digital world? Benedetta Milani answers these questions by drawing on Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of symbolic forms. The author develops a philosophical systematization of the aesthetics and techniques of digital forms of subjectivation, thereby updating and expanding Cassirer's Philosophy of culture. Terms such as technology, digital, immersion, network, digital subject, and, last but not least, myth are redefined and understood as moments of a certain form of symbolization that model new world relations. The study thus offers orientation in the digital world as well as a critique of its current conditions.

Therefore, this book focusses on perceptions of reproduction in 17th-century England – a period that witnessed the shift from female-dominated to male-dominated areas of expertise concerning pregnancy and birth. While numerous studies have ex plored male medical discourse, this work seeks to combine the scientific writings of male authorship and personal writings of female authorship from the same period to expand the socio-historical understanding of reproduction. Through the lens of feminist literary criticism and IPA (interpretative phenomenological analysis), the texts are examined across three distinct spectra and situated within the broader framework of existing scholarship. Ultimately, this book argues that a truly nuanced understanding of the highly gendered, complex topics of pregnancy and birth – on both macro and micro levels – is only achievable through polyvocality

    No full text
The concept of 'crisis' has had a great importance in contemporary language, and not only in the political field. In the study of the Roman world, this concept has been applied in different ways to many historical periods, perceived as moments of fundamental and at the same time traumatic transition. Inspired by the recent contingency, the conference held at the University of Milan in May 2022, the proceedings of which are collected here, placed the 'crisis' of the Roman world at the centre of reflections and interventions. The aim was to highlight the strategies implemented by Rome to overcome specific emergencies, that is, the responses that the community, both as a whole and in its various parts, was able to find when faced with particularly difficult circumstances. At the heart of this book, therefore, are the reactions, compromises and metamorphoses that enabled Rome to start again after moments when its unity and survival seemed threatened.

Women Representation in Governance in Nigeria

    No full text
Despite accounting for 49.47% of the Nigerian population, progress towards gender equity and women's empowerment in Nigeria has remained low, in contrast to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG Target 5.5). In light of this, NILDS, under the leadership of Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman and with support from the management of the National Assembly, is creating a platform for intellectual discourse and engagements on women socio-economic and political empowerment. The NILDS International Conference on Women in Governance provided a platform for experts, government officials, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholder across Africa, to discuss the challenges that women face in political participation and governance in Nigeria and Africa at large. This ultimately led to this evidence-based scientific reader that contributes to the corpus of literature in Africa. Dr. Emily Ikhide Senior Research Fellow/Head, Gender & Inclusivity Unit, NILD

    Precision agriculture '25

    No full text
These edited proceedings contain 181 peer reviewed papers presented at the 15th European Conference on Precision Agriculture, organized by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, June 29 – 3 July 2025, in Barcelona, Spain. The papers reflect the wide range of disciplines that impinge on precision agriculture - technology, crop science, soil science, agronomy, information technology, decision support, remote sensing, data analysis and others. Precision agriculture is a reality in agriculture and is playing a key role as the industry comes to terms with the environment, market forces, quality requirements, traceability, vehicle guidance and crop management. Sensors now in use in agriculture are generating 'Big Data' leading to the use of machine learning and Al - an increasing challenge for agriculture. Research continues to be necessary and needs to be reported and disseminated to a wide audience. The broad range of research topics reported will be a valuable resource for researchers, advisors, teachers and professionals in agriculture long after the conference has finished
