Animals and Landscapes
No full textThis volume explores various connections between animals and landscapes, challenging traditional anthropocentric framings and acknowledging the agency of other-than-human species in shaping human surroundings. A critical departure from traditional perspectives, Animals and Landscapes challenges the prevalent anthropocentric and ocularcentric approaches to the scenic landscape. Instead, the contributors adopt a multispecies lens, prioritising the more-than-human and illuminating the intricate relationships between bodies, actions, and place. The chapters navigate a range of environments, exploring visual and aesthetic experiences as well as the entanglements of place, action, bodies, and subjectivities. In doing so the authors discuss historical, geographical, social, economic, and cultural frameworks that shape landscapes, revealing the often-ignored agency of non-human species. Moving beyond human-centric framings of landscapes, it acknowledges the active role that other species play in shaping, using, and producing these environments. Central to this thematic exploration is the idea that animals have their own geographies and act as place-making agents. Underscoring the dynamic role animals play in shaping the spaces they inhabit, this volume encourages a re-evaluation of the narratives that have predominantly marginalised the role of animals in shaping our understanding of place. This interdisciplinary book will appeal to academics and students of sociology, visual culture, geography, and cultural studies, film, and media and television studies with interests in landscape studies and human-animal studies

The experience did not end well, for in 1521, the Ming Court decided to cut off relations, and a battle broke out between the Guangdong and Portuguese fleets. This work seeks to explain why this happened. Making extensive use of both Chinese and Western archival sources, it proposes a new interpretation—one that breaks with the traditional “clash of civilizations” viewpoint and focuses instead on the diversity of actors and the complex relationships between them

No full textAn den deutschen Hochschulen ist die Situation nicht anders als im ganzen Land: Sowohl subjektiv wahrgenommen (so die endlosen Klagen an den Hochschulen) wie objektiv messbar (bspw. am Zeit- und Kostenaufwand) führt die Hochschulbürokratie zu erheblichen und wachsenden Produktivitätsverlusten bei Lehre, Forschung, Transfer und anderen originären Aufgaben der Professorinnen und Professoren. Dabei leiden diese nicht allein am bürokratischen Schlupf, alle Statusgruppen sind belastet: die wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter in den Fachgebieten, nichtwissenschaftlich Beschäftigte in Laboren, Rechenzentren, Bibliotheken, selbst die Bediensteten in den Hochschulverwaltungen verschwenden unnötig Arbeitszeit und verursachen ungewollt vermeidbare Kosten. Diese Anamnese hat eine Arbeitsgruppe von mehr als 70 HAW-Professorinnen und -Professoren aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet, tätig in staatlichen, kirchlichen und privaten Hochschulen sowie Hochschulen für öffentliche Verwaltung und Polizei, dazu bewegt, in diesem Open-Access-Buch Beispiele und Belege für ausufernde Bürokratie zusammenzutragen, nach Verursachern zu fragen und Lösungen anzubieten
Top-down und bottom-up Dynamiken europäischer Öffentlichkeit im Lokalen
No full textIn diesem Open-Access-Buch wird analysiert, wie Politiker*innen, insbesondere Mitglieder des Europäischen Parlaments, als Top-down-Akteure sowie zivile Akteure als Bottom-up-Akteure auf die Lokaljournalist*innen und deren Berichterstattung über die Europäische Union (EU) in Lokalzeitungen einwirken sowie die Politisierung der EU und die Europäisierung in den EU-Mitgliedstaaten beeinflussen. Lokale Tageszeitungen rücken nur selten in den Fokus der Forschung zur europäischen Öffentlichkeit. Sie sind aber gerade aufgrund ihrer wichtigen Funktionen auf der lokalen Ebene nicht zu vernachlässigen und können zur Politisierung der EU beitragen, indem sie eine Scharnierfunktion zwischen den verschiedenen Akteuren aus Politik, den Massenmedien und der Zivilgesellschaft, deren Strategien und Aktivitäten sowie der Berichterstattung im Medium selbst übernehmen. Mithilfe von 34 Interviews mit Journalist*innen, EU-Korrespondent*innen, Mitgliedern des Europäischen Parlaments und deren Mitarbeitenden, Vertreter*innen der Zivilgesellschaft und von EDICs, einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse lokaler Tageszeitungen sowie eines Vergleichs der drei Fallstaaten Deutschland, Österreich und Frankreich kann festgestellt werden, wie durch diese Dynamiken lokale Öffentlichkeit entsteht, abgebildet und europäisiert wird

Inclusion Organisation in Universities
No full textThis open access book questions whether universities ‘walk the talk’ when it comes to diversifying their student and staff bodies towards including historically underrepresented social groups in higher education. Universities talk inclusion in terms of formally committing to principles of inclusion, equality and diversity and by joining equality charters and engaging with equality legislation and other inclusion-oriented organisations. Using the case study of the UK university sector, the author notes that whilst the empirical evidence for whether commitments work to make universities more demographically diverse is scant, organisational commitments play a role in helping universities meet the demands of a world where individual empowerment and organisational proactiveness are valued. The book proposes that organisational commitments have a ‘two-way function’ i.e., that of including people in universities (Function 1) and that of including universities in the organisational fields in which they operate (Function 2). A theoretical framework and an empirical research programme for investigating these two functions, the synergies and the tensions between them, is outlined. The book draws on a range of primary and secondary statistical data and on sociological institutionalist and organisational theories to move the discussion surrounding the talk and the walk of inclusion beyond rhetoric. It informs academic research in the fields of sociology, organisational studies, higher education and social inequalities. Additionally, the book offers practitioners a tool to understand and evaluate the perceived gap between the talk and the walk in universities when it comes to pursuing inclusion, but also in other settings where organisations formally commit to societal goals

Recognition of Restructuring Plans under the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency
No full textThis doctoral thesis analyses the recognition of restructuring plans under the MLCBI, focusing on two jurisdictions: England and the US. It contrasts the Gibbs rule with the approach followed under Chapter 15 and seeks to develop a balanced framework that reconciles the interests of the debtor and dissenting foreign creditors. Unlike the Gibbs rule, this framework does not make the recognition of a debt discharge in foreign restructuring proceedings conditional upon the debtor’s restructuring being conducted under the law governing that debt. Instead, it focuses on the assessment of substantive fairness at the recognition stage as part of the “adequate protection” safeguard under the MLCBI to ensure the fair treatment of foreign creditors.
