Du bist, was du siehst?
Geotechnical Modeling and Intelligent Systems
This open access book provides insights into research topics related to geotechnical engineering simulations. With the development of computing power and artificial intelligence, research methods in geotechnical engineering are gradually shifting from field surveys and physical experiments toward simulation and prediction. Through simulations, it is possible to infer the impact of engineering structures on soil and rock masses, as well as their response to natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, and debris flows, allowing for early planning of mitigation measures. Inside, readers will find cutting-edge studies on microbial soil stabilization, finite element simulations, centrifuge modeling, and machine learning applications. Topics include advanced material characterization, predictive modeling of tunnels and slopes, AI-enhanced monitoring systems, and risk mitigation strategies for deep excavations and mining subsidence. These contributions illustrate how intelligent systems are optimizing both design and safety across a wide range of geotechnical scenarios. This volume is an essential resource for researchers, engineers, and graduate students seeking to leverage intelligent technologies for more efficient, accurate, and resilient geotechnical solutions. With its integration of theory, experimentation, and smart modeling, it offers a forward-looking perspective on the future of infrastructure in a rapidly evolving technological landscape
Comparative Studies on Chinese and Western Civilizations
This open access book compares Chinese and Western civilizations from multiple perspectives, and it mainly consists of three parts that respectively compare the Warring States and ancient Greece, the Qin and Han dynasties and ancient Rome, and the Central Plains of China and the Western Roman Empire in the face of incursions from neighboring ethnic groups. It explores the inner logic behind the different development paths of Chinese and Western civilizations, making a significant contribution to promoting communication and dialogue between the two. This book is of great help for scholars, students, and general readers interested in the comparative study of civilizations, as well as those seeking to foster cross-cultural understanding and dialogue
Automated Reasoning with Analytic Tableaux and Related Methods
This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 33rd International Conference on Automated Reasoning with AnalyticTableaux and Related Methods, TABLEAUX 2025, held in Reykjavik, Iceland, during September 27–29, 2025. The 25 full papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 47 sbumissions. They were organized in topical sections as follows: Classical and multi-valued logic, theorem proving; modal and tense logic; and intuitionistic and substructural logic
Exposing the Film Apparatus
Film archives have long been dedicated to preserving movies, and they've been nimble in recent years in adapting to the changing formats and technologies through which cinema is now created and presented. This collection makes the case for a further step: the need to see media technologies themselves as objects of conservation, restoration, presentation, and research, in both film archives and film studies. Contributors with a wide range of expertise in the film and media world consider the practical and theoretical challenges posed by such conservation efforts and consider their potential to generate productive new possibilities in research and education in the field
Rethinking Critical Race Theory
This open access book outlines a framework to explain how a world system of white supremacy is reproduced through education at national and local levels. This contribution thus addresses the important need for critical race education scholarship that is not limited by nationally-framed or American-centric perspectives. Written in an accessible manner, the framework recognises that racism takes hold in diverse ways in local and national educational contexts, but is ultimately rooted in global white supremacy. Forging links between Critical Race Theory and decolonial thought, this framework explains how national racialized social systems are reproduced through global structures, knowledge, and feelings; and articulates how anti-racism in education relies on forging transnational solidarities. To illustrate the relevance and significance of this framework, the book engages with how educational systems throughout the world are implicated in sustaining global anti-Muslim racism in a time of Palestinian genocide. Addressing a timely topic and gap in the literature, this book will provide an invaluable resource to postgraduate students and academics developing critical scholarship that explains and resists the global nature of race and racism in education
Comics in Bildungskontexten
Fukushima Legacies
This Open-Access-book focuses on the legacies of post-Fukushima activism, which are linked to significant changes in Japan’s civil society. Thirteen years have passed since the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The Japanese government tries to convey the impression that Japan has fully recovered and regained a sense of normalcy. But Japan continues to grapple with the effects of the nuclear disaster, and the government’s plans are beginning to falter. Japan’s civil society, which has strengthened and accumulated legacies—such as established networks, shared scientific knowledge, and advocacy experience— over a decade after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, has been a key force of resistance to the government’s plans. Post-Fukushima activism has extended its repertoire and thereby firmly shaped various legacies for future social movements. The book concentrates on the following three aspects that have not been thoroughly examined in previous research: The national advocacy of civil society organisations through a special type of legislation called a ‘Diet member bill’; the backgrounds of mothers and other women mobilised for CSOs with a focus on advocacy; and the longevity of these CSOs
Introduction to Ethical Software Development
This open access book bridges the gap between ethical theory and software practice. It introduces foundational concepts in digital ethics, highlights the distinctive nature of software as a technology, and offers a systematic approach to integrating ethics into the development process. The book is structured in eight chapters: it starts with an Introduction presenting a historical overview that puts the relation between ethics and technology (with software as a special kind of technology) in context. Next, What is (Digital) Technology? explores various philosophical perspectives on technology and underlines why software producers carry a significant ethical responsibility. Why develop Software ethically? thenexplores the ethical imperative for software development and advocates for a dynamic hybrid approach that combines universal ethical principles with context-sensitive, participatory methods, while What is Ethics? introduces the foundational concepts of ethics and explores their relevance for software development. Subsequently, Values and Software explores the central role of values in ethical software development discussions. Spotting the Right - Overcoming Moral Uncertainty then addresses the foundational phase of ethical practice and examines the epistemic challenge of identifying morally significant aspects in software design, and Deciding for the Good - Overcoming Moral Indecisiveness examines the challenges of ethical decision-making in software development and highlights the necessity of ethical deliberation to navigate value conflicts such as usability versus explainability, and safety versus autonomy. Eventually, Organization, People and Processes underlines the crucial role organizational structures play in enabling ethical deliberation within software development. The book offers practitioners a clear orientation in the increasingly bewildering landscape of normative demands, value lists, ethical guidelines, and codes of conduct that have emerged around ethically informed software development. It especially aims at practitioners, product managers, policymakers, and students who wish to understand the ethical dimensions of the software systems they develop or regulate
