Chapter 7 ‘There’s No Singular Brown Voice’

    No full text
The Politics and Poetics of Indian Digital Diasporas explores the emancipatory potential and pitfalls of digital platforms and how well or how poorly they reflect intra-communal diversities within South Asian diasporic communities. This book brings together an international network of scholars, both established and emerging, to explore South Asian diasporic communities in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the U.K. It is a comparative cross-national analysis of the intersection of digital technologies and South Asian diasporas. The book centres on three key themes: the ever-presence of digital spaces and the importance of exploring them as focal points for defining and contesting identities; an exploration of how ‘home’ is represented in and across South Asian diasporic communities; and intra-communal diversity in South Asian diasporic communities. The chapters show how digital spaces sometimes create unprecedented opportunities for diasporic communities to mobilise (multi)cultures, sexuality, race, and queerness within South Asian diasporic communities and to move beyond ‘Desi’ and ‘Brown’ as homogenising identifiers. The contributors also demonstrate that digital spaces can be and have been used to reassert internal hegemonies far from homelands. Examining the discursive meanings of South Asian-ness – ‘Desi’, ‘Brown’, ‘South Asians’– the book foregrounds how it is defined, performed, and contested through digital platforms, in ways that redefine the concept of diaspora in innovative, non-territorialized, polyphonic, variegated, and dialogic ways. A novel contribution to the intersection of global digital inequalities, digital cultures and the South Asian diaspora, this book will be of interest to a wide scholarly audience of digital media, South Asian diaspora, culture and ethnicity, race, and the politics of resistance and counter-hegemonic mobilisations

    No full text

    No full text

Participation for everyone? Co-creation as a Response to the Challenges of the Welfare State presents a variety of discussions, approaches, and practices related to co-creation in public welfare services. A central element of co-creation applied to this field is that the welfare state addresses actors outside the public sector to create not only better but also less resource-intensive welfare services. The approach of co-creation has, however, been criticized for having an unambiguously normative and positive perspective that can overshadow the fact that it also involves the distribution and exercise of power. This book explores these critical perspectives. The contributing authors discuss the opportunities and challenges that co-creation offers for solving future welfare challenges. Overall, the book contributes to the discussion of whether everyone should – or can – participate, and if so, in what ways. One of the book’s objectives is to give insight into what co-creation is and could be while also contributing critical perspectives. This book will be of interest to students and staff in the higher-education sector, researchers, professionals in welfare services, politicians, and other stakeholders

    Architecture & Feminist Critical Theory

Three decades of intellectual work on architectural theory and feminist discourse. Hilde Heynen is a Belgian architectural theorist whose work bridges neo-Marxist critical theory and current feminist discourse, applying these perspectives to architectural culture. This volume collects her most significant texts from three decades of intellectual work, centred on three feature concepts: mimesis, dwelling, and displacement. It offers readers incisive reflections on architects' roles in shaping societies and the alliance between ideology, societal structures of injustice, political economy, housing and the built environment. Within a fierce post-critical debate among scholars who have begun to question the relevance of architectural theory to the discipline in the early twenty-first century, Heynen's position remains constant throughout her writings in defence of architectural theory as a social and transformative practice. This collection is essential reading for new generations of architects and cultural theorists interested in modernity, gender and criticality

The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing

    Adult Education Research on Digitalisation

    No full text
Digitalisation is profoundly transforming adult and continuing education - in teaching, in institutions, in education policy, and not least in research. This book provides a comprehensive overview of current academic work on this transformation and shows how digital technologies open up new opportunities, but also what challenges and risks they bring. The first part is devoted to the teaching and learning level. Based on current research findings, it illustrates how Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality and digital educational offerings are changing adult/continuing education. The potential of digital learning formats is presented, but also the ethical, data protection and didactic questions that arise. The second part focuses on institutions, educational offerings and societal framework conditions. The contributions examine the use of digital platforms in the health sector, the influence of social media on political education, the design requirements for media-supported programmes, as well as questions of governance under the conditions of digitality. The third part illuminates theoretical and research-methodological questions on a meta-level. Topics discussed include competency requirements for dealing with generative AI, new questions in the context of digitalisation research, conditions for successful exchange between research and practice, as well as methodological approaches to analysing AI use in adult learning. With these contributions, this volume offers a multi-layered and current picture of how the digital transformation is shaping adult education in Germany and which perspectives and questions are significant in this context. It is aimed at academics who deal with the effects of digitalisation on adult education in an international context and who are interested in current research and theoretical developments

Existential Ethics and the Philosophy of Historiography

    No full text
What does it mean to bear responsibility for absent others when thinking, reading, and writing about them? The hermeneutic activities of reading and writing often involve ethical relations to absent people who are referred to and spoken about in our present lives. As the human world develops historically through orality and literacy, literary culture is one way in which connections to past and future generations can be deepened. Scrutinizing responsibility in various exhortations to historicize, this book delves into the archaeological idea of prehistory, the anthropology of literacy, the ethics of memory and testimony, the hermeneutics and aesthetics of historical narration, Holocaust histories and the afterlife of evil deeds, the distinction between responsibility and guilt, and the morality of the human sciences. The aim is to clarify a personal and transgenerational responsibility toward absent others. The perspective is an existential ethics inspired by Emmanuel Levinas’s "ethics as first philosophy.
