The Political Economy of Megaprojects in Asia

    No full text
This book offers a comprehensive analysis of how the developmental goals of Asian states are reflected in large-scale projects and how various actors both realize and challenge these goals. The rise of Asian economies has spurred the proliferation of megaprojects through large-scale resource mobilization, necessitating varying degrees of state intervention. Despite neoliberal pressures, these projects remain linked to national developmental aspirations, driven by domestic, transnational, or combined pro-growth interests, and serve multiple political purposes. The book advances the argument that megaprojects embody the dynamics of multiscalar strategic relations that determine the process and outcome of urbanization. These projects create iconic landmarks, new towns, central business districts, and infrastructure, showcasing intertwined political and economic interests. By examining contemporary megaprojects in China, South Korea, Taiwan, India, Malaysia, and Turkey, the contributing authors reveal the complexity of urbanizing forces and their multiscalar nature in shaping the built environment and shed light on the intricate interplay of state strategies, economic needs, and sociopolitical forces that influence urban landscapes. This interdisciplinary work provides a nuanced understanding of the political economy underpinning Asian urbanization and contributes to ongoing debates on urban development, state–society relations, and the production of space in the context of globalization

Afro-latinidad e historia de las esclavitudes

    No full text

    Intelligence Practices in High-Trust Societies

    No full text
This book examines the dynamics of intelligence practices in the Scandinavian culture of high social cohesion and high trust. Situated within the new body of scholarly literature, the book emphasizes critical empirical investigations of intelligence practices, highlighting the specific cultural settings of such practices. By providing Scandinavian perspectives on intelligence studies, the work distinguishes Scandinavian intelligence studies from the predominant Anglo-American perspectives. Throughout the Western world, the past two decades have generated a rapid expansion of the legal mandate, funding, and capabilities of intelligence agencies which, simultaneously, have been pushed to renegotiate and renew their legitimacy and democratic mandate in response to a recurrent pattern of scandals, leaks, and failures. While these tendencies are also evident in Scandinavia, the book argues that it is important to emphasize the unique context of cohesion and trust in state agencies that differentiates Scandinavian welfare states from the American (and to a lesser extent British) contexts. This book brings together scholars from Norway, Sweden, and Denmark to address the continuous renegotiation of the legitimacy of state intelligence as it plays out in a Scandinavian setting. This book will be of interest to students of intelligence studies, Nordic politics, security studies, and International Relations

    Kontrolle und Selbstbestimmung

    No full text

    Geology of the Netherlands

    No full text
Below the famously flat surface of the Netherlands lies a fascinating world of buried mountains and valleys, which can only be unraveled with drillings, geophysical techniques and geological understanding. Thorough exploration for hydrocarbons, groundwater and minerals produced a wealth of data and knowledge about the Dutch subsurface and its various uses. The second edition of this book, originally published in 2007, provides access to that wealth with a thoroughly revised and updated description of the Paleozoic to recent geology of the Netherlands, including the offshore. It covers applied geology with chapters on oil and gas, coal and peat, rock salt, groundwater, construction minerals, silica sand, underground storage and sequestration, and geothermal energy. It treats the natural and anthropogenic geohazards of seismicity and subsidence. Finally, it illustrates how data and knowledge of the Dutch subsurface are disseminated by the Geological Survey of the Netherlands, part of research and technology organisation TNO. Geology of the Netherlands is a comprehensive reference work for geologists, engineers, geoscience students, and all others who wish to know more about the relevance and applications of geology in the Netherlands

    Imaginationen des Lebensendes

    No full text
