    Valvular Heart Disease

    No full text
Calcified aortic valve disease (CAVD) affects over six million Americans and is associated with changes in the mechanical properties of valve leaflets, resulting in impaired valvular blood flow. CAVD is a fibrocalcific disease with multifactorial risk factors that are related to the complex environment where the aortic valve (AV) resides. This special issue focuses on the field of heart disease, exploring the relationship between heart valve disease, arrhythmia, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease, as well as research progress on new treatment strategies and risk prediction

The Former “Yugoslavia Tribunal” as Monument of Justice

    No full text
After Nuremberg, there is probably no other place where the future of Europe has been so definitively tested and safeguarded as in The Hague. The iconic building of the former International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has become a global symbol of international law and transitional justice since its establishment in 1993. As the direct successor to the International Military Tribunal of Nuremberg in 1945-1946, this UN tribunal concluded 25 years of unprecedented success in investigating and trying all major war crimes suspects from the wars in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s. It also made history through the first application of the UN Genocide Convention in the trial of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre. This report addresses the question of how the significance of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, as a heritage and memorial site for its many (inter)national stakeholders, can be preserved following the withdrawal of the UN and a possible redevelopment of the site

    Innovative Solutions for Concrete Applications

    No full text
The Special Issue “Innovative Solutions for Concrete Applications” presents recent developments in the field of concrete technology and its applications. The articles and state-of-the-art reviews highlight the key themes such as sustainability, performance, durability, cost, environmental impact, recycling, and construction waste management. It also explores emerging techniques and innovations, including alkali-activated concrete, bacterial concrete, crumb rubber concrete, foamed concrete, waste-based concrete composites, and the reuse of construction and demolition waste. Sustainable concrete alternatives, innovative materials, and improved recycling and mixing techniques offer significant opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of concrete. However, challenges related to cost, long-term durability, and the application of life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis still need to be addressed through ongoing research. Furthermore, technologies such as three-dimensional concrete printing present advanced opportunities for innovation in the construction industry

    Canada’s Cities in a Changing World 1920–2120

    No full text
This book provides a deeper understanding of cities and how they underpin Canada’s culture and prospects. Where are Canada’s cities ‘best in class’? Where do they need urgent care? Why is the most important determinant of a rural Albertan or northern Ontario resident the success of the country’s cities? How are Canada’s cities inextricably anchored to the expansive open spaces of the countryside? Through a sweeping 200-year timeframe, key trends and influences emerge. Many of these are common around the world, yet much is also unique to Canada’s geography. A deeper understanding of the history of Canada’s cities, where cities are today relative to their international peers, and what is likely to transpire over the next century, will lead to better policy decisions. The time frame is also consistent with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) philosophy that decisions should support a sustainable world seven generations into the future (about 200 years). This is the halftime report of Seven Generations of Canada’s cities
