EVS36—International Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exhibition (California, USA)
This Special Issue gathers the best papers from EVS36, the 36th International Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exhibition, which was held from 11 to 14 June 2023 in Sacramento, California, USA. The International Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS) is the world's longest, largest, and highest-spec event in the field of electric vehicles, covering areas including pure electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, fuel cell vehicles, and core components. With the support of the World Electric Vehicle Association, the symposium is hosted by three regional professional organizations under the World Electric Vehicle Association in North America (Electric Drive Transportation Association, EDTA), Europe (The European Association for Electromobility, E-Mobility Europe), and Asia (Electric Vehicle Association of Asia Pacific, EVAAP), in turn. EVS has already had a long history since its birth in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, in 1969.The theme of EVS36 is “Driving the Transition to E-Mobility”. The papers cover research, market, and government activities across all fields related to hybrid, battery, and fuel cell technologies, associated infrastructure, and services. The authors of the best papers presented at EVS36 were invited to further extend their EVS36 paper, including their most recent research findings. After a second thorough round of peer review, these papers were published in this Special Issue of the World Electric Vehicle Journal (WEVJ), the official journal of the World Electric Vehicle Association (WEVA)
Bodies and Narrativity Across the Early Modern World
This book explores the intricate connections between the body and narrative across the early modern world. It examines how bodily aspects shaped the creation of stories and vice versa. The writing, telling, or interpreting of a story is inherently tied to corporeal acts and is, to varying degrees, shaped by them. Likewise, narrativity—the narrative form, including the framing and structuring elements that define a story’s meaning—can influence how the body is experienced, understood, and valued. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach and incorporating case studies from Africa, the Americas, and Europe, this volume positions the body as a critical heuristic tool. It moves beyond the dichotomous debate between constructivism and essentialism by emphasizing the interplay of body and narrative
Featured Papers in Mathematics and Finance
The Special Issue titled “Featured Papers in Mathematics and Finance” in the Journal of Risk and Financial Management (JRFM) presents a curated collection of high-quality research articles that advance the theoretical and applied aspects of financial mathematics. It includes pioneering works that explore diverse areas, such as option pricing, asset pricing models, financial risk management, and the interplay between real-world challenges and financial modeling. Notable contributions include innovative methods for implementing implied volatility in high-frequency markets, extensions of classical financial models using Bayesian approaches, and empirical analyses of fiscal consolidation and financial stability. This Special Issue also examines modern topics like the interconnectedness of cryptocurrencies, the impacts of COVID-19 on financial markets, and novel approaches to risk-adjusted portfolio optimization. By featuring studies that integrate cutting-edge mathematical techniques with critical financial applications, this Special Issue acts as a valuable resource for academics, practitioners, and policymakers. These articles highlight the ongoing evolution of mathematical finance, emphasizing its role in addressing contemporary challenges and improving decision-making processes in complex financial systems
Teens, Social Media, and Image Based Abuse
This Open Access book explores how teens use social media, how they produce, consume, and share sexual images, and how they understand and respond to harmful digital sexual content and interactions. Capturing the views of nearly 500 young people across the UK our book shows how image-based sexual harassment and abuse (IBSHA) impacts all young people and is a society wide problem that needs to be urgently addressed.Developing a socio-cultural and tech affordances approach to understanding social media platform economies, we show how game-like engagement features keep users on apps and expanding their networks, opening up teens to considerable online risk and harms. We argue a lack of consent in the digital environments intersects with society-wide, age old norms of gender and sexual inequalities, facilitating image-based sexual harassment and abuse (IBSHA). Educational policy and curriculum focused on abstinence anti-sexing messaging and a focus on child pornography laws, fail to address gendered and sexualised power dynamics and peer on peer abuse. We argue a multifaceted approach is needed to improve the law, technology companies and education. Better digital literacy and sex education that covers social media use, risk, harms and reporting in platform specific ways would offer better supports for youth
Libraries Driving Education for Sustainable Development
Libraries, especially green and sustainable libraries, deserve prominent recognition as learning institutions and active driving partners for Education for Sustainable Development and which support their governments’ sustainability efforts. In line with the Berlin Declaration on ESD and the UNESCO program, the book focuses on innovative approaches and informal education projects, created and provided by green and sustainable libraries
Cyberpunk and Posthumanism
PublishedIn the ever-evolving landscape of thought, culture, and technology, two concepts have continuously reshaped our understanding of humanity and the digital age: Posthumanism and Cyberpunk. This collection delves into the intersections of these ideas, exploring the fluid boundaries between human identity, artificial intelligence, and digital landscapes.
Posthumanism challenges traditional humanist perspectives, questioning the supremacy of human agency in a world increasingly shaped by machines, biotechnologies, and networked intelligences. Cyberpunk, on the other hand, has long envisioned dystopian futures where technology is both a tool of liberation and oppression, blending human consciousness with the virtual and mechanical.
By bringing together diverse perspectives, this peer reviewed edited volume aims to illuminate the philosophical, literary, cinematic, aesthetic, cultural and ethical dimensions of Posthumanism and Cyberpunk. Whether through theoretical discussions or fictional explorations, the essays presented here invite the reader to reflect on what it means to be human in an age of rapid technological transformation.
We hope this edited volume serves as a thought-provoking companion for scholars, writers, and enthusiasts navigating the ever-blurring lines between the organic and the synthetic, the real and the virtual, while also inviting them to explore these shifting frontiers and reconsider what it truly means to be human in the age of machines
Antimicrobial Peptides
In the recent past, due to their unique properties, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) received great attention as promising alternatives to conventional antibiotics. AMPs are naturally occurring integral components of the host defense system and are functional throughout all orders of life, ranging from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. AMPs are potent molecules with a broad spectrum of biological activities against infectious or pathogenic agents, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. This Reprint covers details regarding AMPs, including the following: screening, purification, and characterization of novel AMPs; genome mining and comparative analysis of AMP-producing biosynthetic gene clusters; cloning and heterologous expression of novel AMPs; structural characterization and designing of new AMPs with potential therapeutic activities; strategies for understand the mechanisms of AMPs; standardization of AMPs' biological activities against various pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites, as well as chronic diseases like cancer and cystic fibrosis; immunomodulatory properties of AMPs and potential therapeutic applications; role of AMPs in human diseases; combination therapies of AMPs with conventional antibiotics; comparative genomics and evolutionary studies of AMPs; evolution and resistance development against AMPs; and artificial intelligence and development of novel AMPs
