Gli strumenti patrimoniali per il Dopo di Noi
This volume arises from the collaboration between the Department of Private Law and Legal Criticism at the University of Padua and the Oggi e Domani Foundation, within the 2023 Third Mission project dedicated to exploring legal instruments supporting people with disabilities. Through a systematic analysis, the text illustrates the functioning of the measures established by Law no. 112 of 2016, highlighting their similarities and differences. The goal is to provide families, operators, and professionals with practical guidance in creating pathways for a more aware, sustainable, and rights-respecting “After Us” framework for the people involved
An Update on Syndemics
The syndemics framework proposes that the co-occurrence of diseases within specific time periods and geographic regions is driven by adverse social and environmental conditions that exacerbate and reinforce poor health outcomes. Over the past quarter-century, this theoretical lens has significantly shaped health-related disciplines, offering critical insights into research, policy, and practice. This Special Issue seeks to spotlight emerging syndemic configurations of infectious diseases with the goal of informing more effective health policies and interventions. Much of the existing literature has focused on HIV-related syndemics; however, newer constellations of diseases—such as those involving COVID-19, Ebola, MPOX, dengue, mucormycosis, and neglected tropical diseases—are increasingly evident and merit scholarly attention. In addition, while pandemics increasingly cross borders and share underlying social determinants, the specific syndemic dynamics they generate are deeply shaped by local political, economic, cultural, and environmental factors. Accordingly, there is an urgent need for place-specific analyses that support tailored intervention strategies. In this Special Issue, authors were asked to address all three core elements of the syndemics framework: the biological interplay of diseases, the synergistic effects that emerge from their interaction, and the local social characteristics of affected populations that support disease clustering
Was hält unsere Gesellschaft zusammen?
Joyce’s Choices
This major new study of the textual parallels that permeate James Joyce’s three most widely read works––'Dubliners', 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man', and 'Ulysses'––documents and discusses some eight hundred instances, just over seven hundred of them in 'Ulysses' alone, of previously unrecognized, unidentified, or misidentified echoes, most of them verbatim, of antecedent texts ranging from major and minor works of English, Irish, Italian, French and other literatures to the poems, plays, popular songs, hymns, comic operas, triple-deckers, dime novels, penny dreadfuls, and print advertisements of his own day. By meticulously identifying hundreds of previously unknown instances of such intertextual echoes, such conscious or unconscious literary borrowings, Winnick’s study complements prior works on Joyce’s allusive practices by, among others, Weldon Thornton, Don Gifford, and, most recently and comprehensively, Sam Slote, Marc A. Mamigonian, and John Turner, shedding important new light on Joyce’s reading, thematic intentions, and creative technique
12: (Dis)placing Pride in Copenhagen, or the socio-spatial lives of queer/trans migrant critique
Queer geographic scholarship has been marked by important interventions emphasizing place-sensitivity, set against both a-contextual narratives of queer recognition and top-down critiques of normativities. At the same time, critical work on queer and trans migrations has brought the translocal character of LGBTQI+ spaces and communities to the fore, including attention to the trajectories of queer and trans people on the move, as well as to the racial-colonial geographies shaping these spaces and mobilities. Across these conversations, Pride events have held an important place as sites through which the dynamics of place and normativities are examined. Focusing on political claims and critiques articulated in/of Pride events in Copenhagen, the paper examines moments where migrant and minoritized queer and trans appraisals in/of Pride complicate imagined geographies of Nordic LGBTQI+ progress and resituate the place of Pride in queer geographic conversations about normativities and critique.Publishe
Comparative Immigrant Education Policies and Practices
Immigration, as old as humanity itself, continues to reshape societies across the globe socially, economically, and culturally. Among its many dimensions, education stands as one of the most vital and challenging arenas where integration takes form. Comparative Immigrant Education Policies and Practices examines how education systems across different countries respond to the needs of immigrant students, exploring both Türkiye’s experiences and international approaches through a comparative lens.
Bringing together theoretical, historical, and practical perspectives, this book offers a comprehensive and multidimensional analysis of immigrant education policies. Each chapter provides an in-depth look at how nations manage educational access, inclusion, and equity for immigrant learners highlighting their successes, shortcomings, and lessons learned. Drawing from global literature, recent research, official reports, and statistical data, this volume serves as an essential reference for scholars, educators, policymakers, and anyone committed to fostering inclusive and democratic education systems in an age of migration
Effettività nella tutela dei diritti attraverso l’opera del giudice
Applied legal research, whose publication outcomes have led to the scientific work collected in this volume, stems from the synthesis between academic experience in the legal field and practical experience gained in courtrooms. In this context, the opportunity offered by the Uni4Justice project—promoted by the Ministry of Justice within the 2014–2020 PON Governance and Institutional Capacity program and carried out in synergy with the initiatives envisaged by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP)—made it possible to pursue the project’s institutional goals, while also turning it into a tool for exploring some of the most significant legal issues which, in the private-law sphere, have a major impact on the judicial workload currently borne by the courts. At the same time, the work undertaken has become genuine teaching material, allowing students enrolled in the Comparative Private Law and European Union Private Law courses at the School of Law of the University of Padua to follow step by step the dynamics of the research’s development and to approach their studies not only from a traditional academic perspective, but also from the viewpoint of how doctrines and concepts are implemented in court practice. Thus, while the general theme of the research—connected to the protection of rights through judicial activity in its broadest sense—calls to mind traditional aspects and topics underlying the function and exercise of jurisdiction, the practical approach linked to the methods by which the research activity was carried out makes it possible to view the contributions collected in this volume—including those on Family Law, Succession Law, and the Law of Vulnerable Persons—as a qualified report of what is currently happening in courtrooms in these areas. The valuable cooperation between the University and the Courts (in particular the Tribunals of Padua, Treviso, and Rovigo) is once again an expression of Law in Action, which in the socio-legal sphere makes the educational and the applicative dimensions two distinct faces of the same coin: the justice system as a whole. The discussions on support administrators (amministratore di sostegno), which several contributions in this volume examine, highlight—among other things—the pressing need for the legal system to be able to adapt not only adequately but also rapidly to the new needs expressed by society. Finally, the research again brings to light the necessity that the formation of legal rules—whose application is entrusted to the judge—be suitable for the purpose for which those rules are created. Indeed, an appropriate rule-making process within a complex society, characterized by multi-level legal orders such as that of today, is and must be regarded as the conditio sine qua non for achieving not only formal but also substantial and concrete protection of rights
Stefan Javors’kyj's Panegyrics
This book presents the first edition of Polish and Latin works by Stefan Javors’kyj (1658–1722), the leading author of Ukrainian literature of his time. The book contains four panegyrics dedicated to the Ukrainian political and ecclesiastical leaders, Hetman Ivan Mazepa and Metropolitan Barlaam Jasyns’kyj. In his masterful books, Javors’kyj combines emblems, lyric and epic poetry with prose in two languages. The edition will help to bring Ukrainian texts into the canon of early modern European literature and to recover an important fragment of literary history. Edited by Jakub Niedźwiedź and Bartosz B. Awianowicz with an introduction by Jakub Niedźwied
Chapter Een goed geoliede hulpverleningsorganisatie in de Koude Oorlog-periode
The author of this article is the son of the head of the Liaison and Communication Service of the Dutch Civil Protection (B.B.) in South Limburg and describes his experiences with this organization in the 1950s and 1960s, during the height of the Cold War. This period was marked by the threat of nuclear weapons, a scarcity of resources, and reconstruction efforts. It created an atmosphere that was unprecedented today, in which the public was much less involved in government responsibilities than now. To understand the role of the B.B., one cannot overlook the global context at that time, how Dutch citizens coped with it, and their perception of the B.B. as a somewhat secretive institution. The article describes the layout of the bunkers and the spaces where necessary supplies were stored. The depiction of the command centers also reflects the prevailing atmosphere, especially during drills. To provide some insight into numbers and scale, the services within the organization and their respective resources are also described. The relaxation that occurred toward the end of the Cold War quickly led to the decline of the B.B. as a protective entity. In hindsight, the question remains whether this rapid and drastic reduction was wise or not
