    No full text
The examination of some texts (by Augustine and Possidius), as well as the prologue of the Retractationes, convinces us that this work is entirely consistent with the author’s sensibility as a thinker and writer, and is not only an interesting aid to truly understand the inspiration and destination of the previous works. In fact, we find here the adoption of a certain lexicon, of some expressions and images that Augustine uses in very significant contexts of other works, in particular the Confessions, and, also for this reason, Augustine’s writing reveals itself to be a powerful means of communication directed to a qualified audience and not only – or not simply – the expression of one’s own feelings

    Charles Mills’ politische Philosophie

    Get PDF

Exploring Animal Behavior Through Sound: Volume 2

    No full text
This open-access book offers a profound exploration of the acoustic world of animals. Organized into nine chapters by taxonomy—invertebrates, insects, amphibians, reptiles, fishes, birds, and mammals (subterranean, terrestrial, and marine)—it delves into sound production, sound reception, sound function, and the impacts of noise on these creatures. As the second volume of Exploring Animal Behavior Through Sound, it builds upon the bioacoustic concepts and methodologies established in the first volume. By attuning ourselves to the sounds of nature, we can gain valuable insights into animal behavior, distribution, and demographics, as well as their habitat characteristics and needs, and the effects of noise on their behavior. This book will serve as a valuable resource for students and researchers in animal ecology seeking to incorporate acoustics into their research toolkit, as well as for environmental managers in industry and government

    Bordering and Mobilities in Ukraine

    No full text
This book analyses how war and bordering impact daily life and mobility and immobility tactics. It brings to light the memories of people who were displaced from Ukraine’s eastern regions because of Russian aggression against Ukraine started in 2014. Based on extensive in-depth research including interviews with individuals who were direct witnesses, participants, and victims of the events in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, the study presents a novel perspective. It explores everyday experiences of war, bordering, and (im)mobilities through the lens of ‘inconvenient people’ including their hard journeys and resistance in occupied territories, the loss of home and struggles to find housing, volunteering, and the traumatic responses. The book amplifies the voices and agency of civilians who experienced the war and displacement, including older adults and people with disabilities, and provides theoretical and practical implications beyond Ukraine in a context of global uncertainties and growing mass population displacement. The book urges politicians and experts to look at the experiences of both displaced and immobile people who lived through the war in Ukraine before the full invasion. It will be of great interest to scholars of Race and Ethnic Studies, Asian Studies, European Politics, Security Studies, Migration Studies, Human Geography, and War and Conflict Studies

    Future Civil Engineering

    No full text
This reprint explores frontier research driving the transition to sustainability in civil engineering. In this reprint, leading experts in the field share their insights, research findings, and visions for the future. Key challenges caused by climate change and resource scarcity were addressed through 11 interdisciplinary studies. From high-precision breakthroughs in thermodynamic, non-destructive testing to the discovery of vibration enhancement mechanisms for UHPC and from high-strength composite material performance optimization models to a 20% accuracy leap in dynamic monitoring algorithms, every technological innovation point leading to the reconstruction of the entire lifecycle effectiveness of infrastructure was analyzed. These results deeply integrated the synergistic evolution of intelligent perception, structural engineering, advanced materials, and ductility systems to form a low-carbon technology system covering the whole cycle of design, construction, operation, and maintenance. This Special Issue provides a practical path to reduce implied carbon emissions and extend the life of infrastructure and strongly promotes the strategic transformation of the civil engineering industry towards an intelligent and green direction

    No full text
The value of intercultural competence in everyday life is undeniable. It expands our cognitive horizons, fosters openness to others, and enables us to recognize and critically analyze cultural differences and similarities. In foreign language teaching, intercultural reflection contributes to a deeper understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity in the modern world. This study focuses on strengthening intercultural skills in the teaching of Dutch as a foreign language. Using a mixed methodology, Mikołaj Buczak investigates how many bachelor's students in Dutch Studies at the University of Wrocław, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin develop their intercultural competence. He also examines how this development is supported during practical Dutch courses at these Polish universities. The results offer insight into the role of the intercultural component within the complex context of international Dutch Studies

    Gender-based violence

The central issue of this volume is violence against women and young girls as part of symbolic or systemic violence, overt or subtle, and its impact on their health and general well-being. Recognised as a determinant of health, violence has been aptly described as a silent epidemic affecting women not only in Europe but globally. This book aims to provide an additional platform for discussing the issue of violence against women and young girls, with a particular focus on its impact on health. The central question of this volume is the nature of interdisciplinary studies on gender violence, bringing together sociologists, lawyers, psychologists, anthropologists and biologists

Chapter L’èkphrasis biblica. Il Tabernacolo di Mosè e Giuseppe Boschi

    No full text
The here collected contributions relating to the 46th International Conference of the Representation Disciplines Teachers, organized jointly by Sapienza University of Rome, Roma Tre University, and San Raffaele Roma University, aim to offer the scientific community a reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the concept of èkphrasis, a term that, in the field of representation, concerns descriptive, analogical, and digital activities that generate new knowledge in several areas of application. The Conference aims to place at the center of the discussion an interpretation of the concept of research that, without neglecting an idea of study, protection, and enhancement of environmental and cultural heritage, focuses on the needs of contemporary society and its possible developments, making use of innovative theoretical, methodological, and operational activities, including those characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. According to this interpretation, research can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the definition and testing of experimental proposals aimed at exploring new areas of investigation: this opens up imaginative and utopian perspectives in the relationship between the sciences, the arts, and the disciplines that contribute to common goals, through the experimentation of methods, techniques, and languages for conceiving, prefiguring, designing, and representing

Brücken zur Teilhabe: Wo Krankheit und Schule sich begegnen

    No full text

New Gender, Old School? Geschlecht im Kontext Schule

    No full text
How are intersectional gender relations reproduced and transformed in teaching, teacher training and educational materials? The authors examine the debate on the change and persistence of pluralised and intersectional sexuality and gender orders. They focus on the tension between the reproduction, disruption and transformation of heteronormativity in the school context and on how educational gender studies can support negotiation processes in school pedagogy, professional research and subject didactics.
