Step towards upgrading perspective for Shuafat Refugee Camp, Jerusalem

    No full text
An article published in : European Journal of Academic Essays 1(4) ,2015Abstract: The estimated age of old Jerusalem is 5,000 B.C. The city holds special significance for all three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Palestinian residents of Jerusalem lack access to adequate water and sanitation infrastructure and services primarily due to the Jerusalem Municipality's strict housing and urban planning regime which places strict criteria for entitlement of these services. The study uses a qualitative approach in order to provide a deeper understanding of living and housing conditions in the refugee of Shuafat. The vulnerable and miserable situation in the camps has badly affected the innocent refugees. In case there is an international support for upgrading through proper donation, the main living and housing condition in the Shuafat refugees’ camp can be improved. This paper explores the current living and housing conditions in the Shuafat refugee’s camp. This paper will give clear recommendations and various scenarios for upgrading housing and living conditions in the refugee camps of the West Bank and Jerusalem

A glance into the hidden burden of maternal morbidity and patterns of management in a Palestinian governmental referral hospital

This study aims to examine the incidence, types and patterns of management of severe and non-severe maternal morbidities of Palestinian women during pregnancy, labour, delivery and up to seven days postpartum in one Palestinian hospital. Results of this study show the burden of maternal morbidity for Palestinian women between the ages of 16 and 48 is high. In Palestine, maternal morbidity can be prevented by promoting a rational use of cesarean section, avoiding unnecessary medicalization, reducing unwanted pregnancies and updating practices of providers related to abortion/miscarriage care.World Health Organization (Implementation Research Protocol ID A65770) to the Faculty of Health Sciences, American University of Beirut for a four-country study on maternal near-miss in public hospitals in Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria

Next generation sequencing to determine the cystic fibrosis mutation spectrum in Palestinian population

Anne,Paepe:Ghent University Tamer,ESSAWI:Clinical Laboratory Paul,Coucke:Ghent UniversityAn extensive molecular analysis of the CF transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene was performed to establish the CFTR mutation spectrum and frequencies in the Palestinian population, which can be considered as an understudied population. We used a targeted Next Generation Sequencing approach to sequence the entire coding region and the adjacent sequences of the CFTR gene combined with MLPA analysis of 60 unrelated CF patients. Eighteen different CF-causing mutations, including one previously undescribed mutation p.(Gly1265Arg), were identified. The overall detection rate is up to 67%, and when we consider only CF patients with sweat chloride concentrations >70 mEq/L, we even have a pickup rate of 92%. Whereas p.(Phe508del) is the most frequent allele (35% of the positive cases), 3 other mutations c.2988+1Kbdel8.6Kb, c.1393-1G>A, and p.(Gly85Glu) showed frequencies higher than 5% and a total of 9 mutations account for 84% of the mutations. This limited spectrum of CF mutations is in agreement with the homozygous ethnic origin of the Palestinian population. The relative large portion of patients without a mutation is most likely due to clinical misdiagnosis. Our results will be important in the development of an adequate molecular diagnostic test for CF in Palestin
