Challenges to the formalization of Palestinian female-owned home-based businesses

    No full text
Grace Khoury, Wojdan Farraj and Suhail Sultan explore the fact that female-owned home-based businesses (HBBs) are often characterized by underperformance, as many prefer to remain in the informal sector. In their study it is argued that few women attempt to formalize their HBBs due to the challenges associated with the legitimization process, leaving the majority preferring to endure constrained performance rather than to pursue the otherwise cumbersome alternative. The chapter’s aim is to investigate the challenges faced by female-owned HBBs in Palestine when seeking formalization and to highlight the initiatives provided by the various institutions to encourage these women to persist in their endeavours, and, possibly, to formalize. The findings demonstrate that the most challenging factors are of an institutional nature, both formal (weak institutions, tax policies and support services) and informal (socio-cultural constraints). Moreover, few successful initiatives were introduced by various institutions to encourage these women to formalize their HBBs

An Efficient Approach for Fault Detection and Fault Tolerant Control of Wind Turbines

    No full text
This paper presents an efficient technique for monitoring and control of wind turbines. Fault tolerant control (FTC) is designed using Parity-Space approach to diagnose the sensor faults in the wind turbine. Based on the fault detection system an FTC scheme is proposed to accommodate and reconfigurable the control signals. The main contribution of this study is to develop a monitoring and control system of wind turbine, which reduces the system components as well as to increase the reliability and safety of wind turbines. The sensors which considered in this study are pitch position, generator speed and rotor speed sensors. Real data of wind measurement and real parameters of wind turbine is used to illustrate the proposed scheme

From cluster structures to nuclear molecules: The role of nodal structure of the single-particle wave functions

    No full text
The nodal structure of the density distributions of the single-particle states occupied in rod-shaped, hyperand megadeformed structures of nonrotating and rotating N ∼ Z nuclei has been investigated in detail. The single-particle states with theNilsson quantum numbers of the [NN0]1/2 (withN from 0 to 5) and [N,N − 1,1] (with N from 1 to 3 and = 1/2, 3/2) types are considered. These states are building blocks of extremely deformed shapes in the nuclei with mass numbers A 50. Because of (near) axial symmetry and large elongation of such structures, the wave functions of the single-particle states occupied are dominated by a single basis state in cylindrical basis. This basis state defines the nodal structure of the single-particle density distribution. The nodal structure of the single-particle density distributions allows us to understand in a relatively simple way the necessary conditions for α clusterization and the suppression of the α clusterization with the increase of mass number. It also explains in a natural way the coexistence of ellipsoidal mean-field-type structures and nuclear molecules at similar excitation energies and the features of particle-hole excitations connecting these two types of the structures. Our analysis of the nodal structure of the single-particle density distributions does not support the existence of quantum liquid phase for the deformations and nuclei under study

Industrial Solid Waste Management in a Developing Country Governorate and the Opportunities for the Application of Cleaner Production Principles.

    No full text
Hebron is an industrial governorate south of Palestine where the lack of studies ends up to inexistent evaluation of its environmental status. Understanding the status of industrial solid waste management (SWM) largely contributes to the determination of the opportunities and the appropriate roadmap for the application of cleaner production principles. In this chapter, we report the results of an extended research-constructed survey conducted in Hebron both at municipal level and industrial level. Primarily the municipal level research was aimed at identifying the current SWM practices. Then the industrial level research was aimed to collect data on both the applied SWM practices in local industries and record the generated quantities of ISW. Towards the development, updating and implementation of a legislative framework, which will support an integrated SWM in the local industrial area, the stakeholders are highly encouraged to develop an incentive system for industries to reduce and recycle the generated ISW. This need clearly emerges from the current research results: Only 21 out of 91 factories treat SW before final disposal; 83.33% of them recycle the waste in situ or in collaboration with local recycling stakeholders; 51.65% of the investigated industries produce a mixture of process and nonprocess ISW, the average rate of nonprocess ISW is 23.22 kg/ day; 8.4% of factories always separate process ISW from nonprocess ISW; 85.7% of factories do not separate their ISW into specific components. Only 13.6% of factories reuse and 16.5% recycle ISW; 77.3% of the recyclable materials are used as secondary raw materials, and 22.7% of them use the separated ISW as secondary raw materials in production, both implementing the fundamental 3Rs principle

Information extraction from Arabic law documents Mar 2017 – Present Project description It's Samah Abu Shamma graduation project. It extracts some useful information from Arabic legal documents for people how are interested in law field. Project brief description : It takes a raw (.txt) file legal file and it extracts from it the name of the judge/s, lawyer/s, parties ( plaintiffs and defendants ) and the case's verdict. Machine Learning techniques and rule based approach are used to build the Extraction system.Information hidden in unstructured or semi-structured documents can be quite useful. To pull this information, an information extraction system is needed. Making extracted information available in structured format enables answering more complex queries of interest to law professionals. In this paper we address the issue of Arabic information extraction from law documents. We describe a system that extracts some important information of interest to potential users of these documents with minimal human intervention. The system employs a hybrid approach that utilizes machine learning and rule based approaches to extract the needed information from the texts

Digital technologies play a vital role in all domains of our daily life, including teaching. Information and communication technologies for education offer a range of facilities from which learners can benefit. This is why their integration in teaching and especially in writing essays becomes a pedagogical challenge. This study focuses on the analysis of the real impact of digital technologies on the quality of essays written by learners of A1-A2 level at Birzeit University. It tries to study the impact of this integration on the acquisition of skills among these students. Therefore, it aims to compare the performance of students in writing essays before and after the integration of digital technologies
