Palestine : new media, same old political agenda
The Palestinian media represent an exceptional case in the Middle East,
and the Arab world in particular. Because Palestine is still under Israeli
occupation, media tend to focus on macro issues such as politics, the
Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, and restrictions that cause suffering
to Palestinians in their daily lives. Focusing on major political issues
means that other issues, such as housing, food, petrol prices, education,
individual freedom, and social and family violence, are less frequently
covered.
This study investigates whether there are significant differences in the
central issues addressed by daily newspapers and online news sites. Specifically,
content was analyzed in Al-Quds, a widely distributed newspaper
in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, and the Ma’an news
website. It is important to mention here that Israeli policies, including
control of the crossing areas, prevent the regular passage of daily newspapers
between Gaza and the West Bank. This study addresses a number
of questions, including:
• To what extent do media coverage priorities differ between traditional
and online media in Palestine?
• What kinds of issues are both covering?
• How do the topics, frames, and sources differ between Al-Quds and
the Ma’an news website?
The content analysis covers the period when the Palestinian Authority
attempted to earn recognition for Palestine as a state in the United
Nations (September 15 to October 15, 2011) and there was wide media
mobilization of public opinion. The analysis examined the variables of
topic, frame, language, and source, which reflect the priorities of coverage.

Results: Drosophila NTD contains an iron-sulfur cluster and binds DNA.
Conclusion: The iron-sulfur cluster in mtDNA helicase enhances protein stability, and may regulate its biological functions.

Diazepam stability in wastewater and removal by advanced membranes technology, activated carbon and micelle- clay complex
Stability and removal of the anti-anxiety drug diazepam (valium) from spiked wastewater
samples were studied. An advanced wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), utilizing ultrafiltration
(UF), activated charcoal (AC), and reverse osmosis (RO) after the secondary biological
treatment showed that UF and RO were relatively sufficient in removing spiked
diazepam to a safe level. Kinetic studies in both pure water (abiotic degradation) and in
sludge (biotic degradation) at room temperature were investigated. Diazepam showed high
chemical stability toward degradation in pure water, and underwent faster biodegradation
in sludge providing two main degradation products. The degradation reactions in sludge
and pure water showed first-order kinetics with rate constant values of 2.6 × 10−7 s
−1 and
9.08 × 10−8 s
−1
, respectively (half-life = 31 and 88 d, respectively). Adsorption of diazepam
by activated carbon and composite micelle–clay (octadecyltrimethylammonium montmorillonite)
complex was studied using both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Based on the
determination coefficient, Langmuir isotherm was found to better fit the data, indicating the
retention of diazepam monolayer on both adsorbents. Filtration of 100 mg L−1 solutions of
diazepam by micelle–clay filter yielded almost complete removal at flow rates of
2 mL min−1

Archaeozoological analysis of molluscan fauna from the Late Bronze Age stratum of site 4 of Tell Jenin
Molluscan shells were collected and analyzed from the Late Bronze Age stratum of Tell Jenin (West Bank, Palestine). A total of 2922 (MNI) shells were identified from the stratum and found to be belonging to 44 species of terrestrial, freshwater and marine molluscs. Additionally, a total of 6200 unknown shell fragments were collected from the same stratum. Landsnail shells belonging to 18 species and having a total of 1974 specimens were clearly dominant over freshwater molluscs (17 species and 916 specimens) and marine Mediterranean molluscs (9 species and 32 specimens). Among terrestrial molluscs,Calaxis hierosolymarum and Cecilioides genezarethensis (family Ferrussaciidae) were the most dominant landsnail of that Age. Freshwater molluscs were dominated by
Semisalsa contempta and Pseudamnicola solitaria, whereas Mediterranean snails were dominated by Glycymeris violascens
and Glycymeris pilosus. The construction phase of the site (occupation phase) contained more specimens of molluscs
than the destructive (abandonment) phase. The molluscan study and analysis revealed paleoclimatic variations during the Late Bronze Age. It also reflected different patterns of trade exchange, food sources, and the use of molluscan shells as artifacts, including their use as ornaments, in traditional and ritual activities by the inhabitants of the sit
