Quality assessment of Arabic web content: the case of Arabic Wikipedia

    No full text
With the huge size and large diversity of Arabic web content, machine assessment of document quality acquires added importance. Users are in dire need for quality rating of the material returned in response to their queries. The Wikipedia, with its large metadata, has been a topic of extensive research on document quality assessment. Criteria used include text properties and style parameters, contributor and edit characteristics and multimedia components. In this paper we report on our ongoing work to adapt existing document assessment approaches to Arabic content with concentration on the Arabic Wikipedia and present some of the results. We also try to augment that with features specific to Arabic as well as parameters like author expertise and social media presence. One of our goals is an aggregate measure integrating many of the features into a single document quality index. We plan to use Wikipedia article quality assessment results to train general content assessment methods that can be applied to general content that lacks major Wikipedia features

Prediction of zonal and total discharges in smooth straight prismatic compound channels using regression modeling

    No full text
Published in : Flow Measurement and Instrumentation, Volume 38, August 2014, Pages 40-48Experimental results are presented concerning the zonal and total discharge distribution and characteristics in a compound channel cross-section comprising one rectangular main channel and two symmetrical floodplains. The discharges in the main channel, floodplains, and total compound channel are found to be highly correlated to several dimensionless parameters defined using the compound channel cross-section geometry. Multi-variable regression analysis was utilized for developing predictive models that can estimate the main channel, floodplains and total discharges as a function of four different dimensionless parameters. The developed models to predict the zonal and total discharges in compound channels are found to be highly significant according to several major statistics including the model standard error, coefficient of determination (R2), and F-statistic. The developed multi-variable regression-based models are also tested validity available experimental data. Several statistical tests applicable to the analysis of residuals have indicated the effectiveness of the developed predictive models

Silvestre de Sacy et les Druzes: réflexions sur la politique du savoir et l’utilisation conjoncturelle des traditions

    No full text
A chapter from a book titled : Silvestre de Sacy : Le projet européen d’une science orientaliste, 2014, p.189-206The chapter discusses the ways in which the French orientalist and philologist Silvestre de Sacy conceptualized Druze religious traditions, and how his work was later used and modified by the Egyptian philosopher, the late Abdulrahman Badawi, within a modern conception of the Arab nation. Lastly, the article juxtaposes these intellectual traditions with ethnographic observations on how a contemporary Druze community perceives of its religious traditions

Dynamic Privacy Policy Management in Services-based Interactions

    No full text
Technology advancements have enabled the distribution and sharing of patient personal health data over several data sources. Each data source is potentially managed by a different organization, which expose its data as a Web service. Using such Web services, dynamic composition of atomic data type properties coupled with the context in which the data is accessed may breach sensitive data that may not comply with the users preference at the time of data collection. Thus, providing uniform access policies to such data can lead to privacy problems. Some fairly recent research has focused on providing solutions for dynamic privacy policy management. This paper advances these techniques, and fills some gaps in the existing works. In particular, dynamically incorporating user access context into the privacy policy decision, and its enforcement. We provide a formal model definition of the proposed approach and a preliminary evaluation of the model

Investigation of Changes in Tetracycline Repressor Binding upon Mutations in the Tetracycline Operator

    No full text
Volzing,Katherine: Vivcharuk,Victor: Bolintineanu,Dans: srivas tava,Poonam:The tetracycline operon is an important gene network component, commonly used in synthetic biology applications because of its switch-like character. At the heart of this system is the highly specific interaction of the tet repressor protein (TetR) with its cognate DNA sequence (tetO). TetR binding on tetO practically stops expression of genes downstream of tetO by excluding RNA polymerase from binding the promoter and initiating transcription. Mutating the tetO sequence alters the strength of TetR−tetO binding and thus provides a tool to synthetic biologists to manipulate gene expression levels. We employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coupled with the free energy perturbation method to investigate the binding affinity of TetR to different tetO mutants. We also carry out in vivo tests in Escherichia coli for a series of promoters based on these mutants. We obtain reasonable agreement between experimental green fluorescent protein (GFP) repression levels and binding free energy differences computed from molecular simulations. In all cases, the wildtype tetO sequence yields the strongest TetR binding, which is observed both experimentally, in terms of GFP levels, and in simulation, in terms of free energy changes. Two of the four tetO mutants we tested yield relatively strong binding, whereas the other two mutants tend to be significantly weaker. The clustering and relative ranking of this subset of tetO mutants is generally consistent between our own experimental data, previous experiments with different systems and the free energy changes computed from our simulations. Overall, this work offers insights into an important synthetic biological system and demonstrates the potential, as well as limitations of molecular simulations to quantitatively explain biologically relevant behavio
