The old boy network: are the professional networks of female executives less effective than men's for advancing their careers?
No full textWe investigate the impact of professional networks on men's and women's earnings, using a dataset of European and North American executives. The size of an individual's network of influential former colleagues has a large positive association with remuneration, with an elasticity of around 21%. However, controlling for unobserved heterogeneity using various fixed effects as well as a placebo technique, we find that the real causal impact of networks is barely positive for men and significantly lower for women. We provide suggestive evidence indicating that the apparent discrimination against women is due to two factors: first, both men and women are helped more by own-gender than other-gender connections, and men have more of these than women do. Second, a subset of employers we identify as ‘female friendly firms’ recruit more women but reward networks less than other firms

Bootstrap inference for fixed-effect models
No full textThe maximum-likelihood estimator of nonlinear panel data models with fixed effects is asymptotically biased under rectangular-array asymptotics. The literature has devoted substantial effort to devising methods to correct the maximum-likelihood estimator for its bias as a means to salvage standard inferential procedures. We show that the (recursive, parametric) bootstrap replicates the distribution of the (uncorrected) maximum-likelihood estimator in large samples. This justifies the use of confidence sets constructed via conventional bootstrap methods. No adjustment for the presence of bias needs to be made

Cette action obéit à trois conditions : l’insuffisance d’actif, la faute de gestion et le lien de causalité. S'agissant de la faute de gestion, le juge doit impérativement identifier et éventuellement sanctionner

Solution. – Le Conseil d’État considère que sont des déchets, les pneus acquis par une société auprès de centres de véhicules usagés et de garages, « qui s’en défont auprès d’elle », pour les revendre. Leur valeur commerciale et leur potentielle réutilisation économique n’ont aucune incidence sur la qualification des pneumatiques en déchets impliquant alors l’application de la nomenclature ICPE correspondante.
Impact. – Dans son arrêt du 24 novembre 2021, le Conseil d’État fait évoluer sa jurisprudence relative à la définition de déchet dans le cadre de la police des ICPE. Sur le fondement de l’article L.541-1-1 du Code de l’environnement, les juges du Palais Royal qualifient les pneumatiques en déchet par la combinaison de l’intention de se défaire et de l’incertitude de la réutilisation sans transformation préalable

Able and Mostly Willing: An Empirical Anatomy of Information's Effect on Voter‐Driven Accountability in Senegal
No full textPolitical accountability may be constrained by the reach and relevance of information campaigns in developing democracies and—upon receiving information—voters' ability and will to hold politicians accountable. To illuminate voter‐level constraints and information relevance absent dissemination constraints, we conducted a field experiment around Senegal's 2017 parliamentary elections to examine the core theoretical steps linking receiving different types of incumbent performance information to electoral and nonelectoral accountability. Voters immediately processed information as Bayesians, found temporally benchmarked local performance outcomes particularly informative, and updated their beliefs for at least a month. Learning that incumbents generally performed better than expected, voters durably requested greater politician contact after elections while incumbent vote choice increased among likely voters and voters prioritizing local projects when appraising incumbents. In contrast, information about incumbent duties did not systematically influence beliefs or accountability. These findings suggest voters were able and mostly willing to use relevant information to hold politicians to account
Women in economics: Europe and the world
No full textBased on a data set that we collected from the top research institutions in economics around the globe (including universities, business schools and other or- ganizations such as central banks), we document the underrepresentation of women in economics. For the 238 universities and business schools in the sample, women hold 25% of senior level positions (full professor, associate professor) and 37% of junior level positions. In the 82 U.S. universities and business schools, the figures are 20% on the senior level and 32% on the entry level, while in the 122 European institutions, the numbers are 27% and 38%, respectively, with some heterogeneity across countries. The numbers also show that the highest-ranking institutions (in terms of research output) have fewer women in senior positions. Moreover, in the U.S., this effect is even present on the junior level. The “leaky pipeline” may hence begin earlier than oftentimes assumed, and is even more of an issue in the highly integrated market of the U.S. In Europe, an institution ranked 100 places higher has three percentage points fewer women in senior positions, but in the U.S. it is almost five percentage points
