    Get PDF
Abstract Purpose – Throughout the high school years, especially for senior high school (SHS) level, academic stress emerges as the prevalent psychological state among students, particularly due to the simultaneous occurrence of adolescence and the increased intensity of academic obligations and responsibilities that must be fulfilled during this stage. As they approach college, they face the added pressure of making important career-related choices, which further intensifies the challenges they encounter during this phase. With classes transitioning to online platforms as an alternative measure for schools during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in the Philippines, presented numerous challenges and difficulties, it is crucial to examine the academic stress and coping self-efficacy among SHS students during this transition period. Additionally, this study aimed to investigate the predictors of academic stress and coping self-efficacy utilizing the sociodemographic profile of the participants. Methodology – A descriptive research design was employed in the study. A total of 446 SHS students from Grade 11 to Grade 12 in one of the academic institutions in Quezon City were purposively selected to participate by answering two self-administered online measures on academic stress (Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents) and coping self-efficacy (Coping Self-Efficacy Scale). The collected data analyzed using SPSS v25. Findings – Results revealed that self-expectation (M = 3.65) and workload (M = 3.45) are the primary sources of academic stress, and SHS students are more confident utilizing problem-solving (M = 6.17) to cope with academic stress. Further, being female (P= 0.01), level (P = 0.08), and belonging to the HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) strand (P = .08) increase stress scores. A significant negative correlation of -0.26 (95% CI:-0.35, -0.17) between stress and coping self-efficacy was also found, which suggests that as academic stress increases, coping self-efficacy decreases. Further, being a female, SHS2, and in the HUMSS strandtends to increase academic stress, while being a female who is unemployed and/or a mother whose working at home scores relatively low with coping self-efficacy. Significance – These findings have educational implications. It highlights the factors to be considered by offering guidance to counselors and educators in developing intervention programs, focusing on psychological well-being and skill enhancement that would help mitigate the adverse outcomes of this period of disruption

Consumers are becoming more interdependent and open as a result of globalization. Because of the idea of globalization, branding is essential to take into account from both the marketing and consumer viewpoints. The current study intends to determine Bangladeshi customers’ preferences for cell phone brands based on global versus local perspectives and to comprehend the influencing factors and cell phone features that could affect users’ purchasing decisions. A structured questionnaire was used to survey 850 consumers selected through a simple random sampling technique for the study, and 593 of their responses were deemed sufficient to continue the research. According to the study’s findings, customers favored the Android operating system and the Samsung brand the most. The majority of consumers believed that having a cell phone’s ‘convenient’ usage was its best feature. The study also identified a range of preferred budgets for a new cell phone. Eventually, a new measurement model for cell phone brand preference factors among Bangladeshi consumers was excavated by the study. Only four of the nine items selected for measurement in the study were sufficient for validating the model. The study’s inability to pinpoint any local ethnocentrism for brand preference was one of its flaws. The study will contribute and originate the value with novel and significant implications for cell phone consumers to choose their preferred brands with quality of service, cell phone brand marketers, telecom service providers, payment gateway service providers, and their support systems, including producers, supply chain and industry experts, before and after-sale service providers, brand promoters, stakeholders, policymakers, and governments of various developing and developed countries to build up and implement brand strategies and policies in the global cell phone device and internet-connected digitalized era. As a result, consumers can achieve their greater perceived brand value, ensuring their desired level of satisfaction with highly cognitive brand preferences, brand trust, and brand loyalty to their expected cell phone brands

The sudden new crown pneumonia epidemic has had a huge impact on tourism, as well as hospitality industry in Malaysia. This paper analyses the views and reaction in crisis management practices pursued by hotel managers for business survival during the COVID-19 pandemic. To do so, in-depth interviews were carried out on the managers of Malaysian hotels (five managers from 3-star hotels, and four managers from 5-star hotels). The results indicated that the labour actions (e.g., unpaid leave, salary cut and layoff) were the first and most favour by hotels to respond to the COVID-19. However, it causes the shortage of manpower when the hospitality industry resumes back at the recent stage. This is one of the main challenges faced by hoteliers. Digital marketing and promotion were another strategy implemented by hotels to increase occupancy rate during the pandemic. In addition, views on government supports to the hotels during the pandemic were also identified

Adoption Of the Precautionary Principle on the Safety and Health Risks of Nanofood in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Food derived from nanotechnology or contains engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is widely available for consumers in the marketplace. Oral exposure to ENMs has been linked to various potential adverse effects on human safety and health. In Malaysia, nanofood is regulated with a regulatory framework designed for conventional food without considering the unique and novel properties of ENMs. The adequacy of the existing framework for regulating the safety and health risks of nanofood is ambiguous. This study examined the necessity for Malaysia of having such regulatory framework to govern the safety and health risks of nanofood using the precautionary principle. By adopting the doctrinal analysis, the finding suggests that the existing food safety framework must be amended to incorporate specific provisions on nanotechnology, and that the amendment must be based on the precautionary principle. The new regulatory framework enables the food safety authority to implement the earliest precautionary measure, protecting consumers from serious future harm caused by nanofood. The proposed regulatory framework will strengthen the domestic food safety framework and national food safety policy in meeting the challenge posed by nanofood

Maslahah and its Application in Islamic Finance

    Get PDF
In light of the complexity of contemporary Islamic banking and finance difficulties and the fact that certain answers cannot be found in traditional legal texts, maslahah or the public interest has emerged as a secondary source of Shariah to address these difficulties and issues. Maslahah which embodies the notion of achieving the public interest and preventing harm, has been crucial to the development and evolution of products and services in Islamic finance. The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of maslahah as the secondary source of Shariah whereby the definition, classification, validity of maslahah and the conditions of validity are discussed. The study also highlighted its applications in Islamic finance products and services besides conducting library research analysis on literature from both classical and contemporary maslahah literature as well as the current application of maslahah in Islamic finance products and services. The study explained maslahah mu’tabarah, maslahah mulgha, and maslahah mursalah as the three classifications of maslahah which are considered valid when they are genuine (haqiqiyyah), general (kulliyah) and not in conflict with clear Quranic verse according to the Muslim jurists. The study also found that the concept of maslahah is applied in the establishment of Islamic banking and finance institutions as83 well as the Islamic capital market whereby policies were developed by the government for the Islamic banking institutions to ensure the products are Shariah-compliant. Additional collateral is required, based on the principles of usul fiqh, for the renewal of mudarabah transactions. On the other hand, ta’widh and gharamah are introduced by Islamic banks to safeguard the interests of both banks and the customers. Finally, zakat financing can help entrepreneurs repay their existing financial obligations

Strategies for Effective Policy Implementation in Nigeria: A Case of Federal Character Principle

    Get PDF
The implementation of policies by the government appears to be ineffective in using the Federal Character Principle (FCP) as a case study. The FCP, which was enacted to guarantee the distribution of employment in Nigeria’s public service, appears to not be achieving its goal as the disparity in the distribution of employment remains inherent in the civil service. Disparity perfectly describes the distribution of employment in the Nigerian civil service, regardless of the enactment of the FCP. Subsequently, this paper endeavours to investigate techniques that would guarantee the viable implementation of the FCP in Nigeria’s civil service. The paper sourced its data from secondary sources and relevant documents. The paper revealed that strategies that can ensure the FCP can be effectively implemented include the application of a Tribunal, the inclusion of civil society in the implementation of the enabling laws and ensuring that officers of the commission are not appointed based on party affiliation. The paper recommends that sanctions should be used for defaulters of the policy

Visual Art as A Tool to Learn About Literature

Purpose - Art forms such as music and drama are among some recognised tools used by educators. This has sparked interest in how art can be used in education, making it a fertile field for educational research. However, there is a missing connection in how drawing can be used as a tool for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students to learn about literature. Methodology - This paper will incorporate an Arts-Based Research (ABR) method to determine how visual art, particularly drawing, can be used as a tool to advance EFL students’ understanding of a selected literary text, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” (2015) This qualitative study, viewed through the lens of Richard Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML), involved 10 EFL participants and revealed strategies for integrating drawing that are absent in traditional approaches. Additionally, Hameed’s (2022) elements of art, Yenawine’s (2014) Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), and Showalter’s (2003) concepts of literature learning will be included to ground the framework of the intervention. Findings - This study can be regarded as a method to liberate traditional teaching practices into contemporary approaches, serving as a tool to merge cultural knowledge while improving confidence, higher-order thinking skills, and expression. It also allows educators to be flexible and provoke more reflection and participation. The data discusses three main strategies in exploring how integrating drawing can help EFL students learn about literature: mining to trigger thoughts, engaging with the senses, and giving permission to wonder. Visual art allows individuals to create their responses by exploring new ideas and representing emotions, confirming plans, and comprehending the deeper level of literary texts. Significance – The study will offer insight and work as an alternate strategy for educators and learners alike to utilise visual art as a tool in teaching and learning literature. The findings will also ease the alarming condition where literature teaching and learning are stereotyped as dauntin

Resolving the Conflicts between the Philippines and Malaysia: Mediation on the Sabah Dispute and Its Impact on Socio-Economic Cooperation (1986-1998)

Territorial disputes frequently emerge in the wake of new nation states asserting their sovereignty and expanding their influence. These claims often hinge on the nebulous grounds of historical entitlement and legal precedent. Sixteen years post-independence from the United States, the Philippines formally staked a claim to Sabah in 1962, a move initiated under President Diosdado Macapagal and escalated by the more assertive policies of President Ferdinand Marcos. The main objective of this article is to explore the degree to which socio economic cooperation has played a role in rejuvenating and bolstering the Philippines’ foreign relations with Malaysia amidst the Sabah dispute. This historical analysis utilises qualitative methodologies to scrutinise primary and secondary sources, encompassing official records and documents pertinent to the dispute over the Philippines’ claim to Sabah. Despite the long-standing and potentially destabilising territorial dispute over Sabah, the Philippines and Malaysia transitioned from confrontation to collaboration, leading to robust socio-economic ties and increased regional stability within ASEAN. The problem lies in understanding how this diplomatic shift occurred, the strategies employed by the administrations of Presidents Aquino and Ramos in redirecting the focus from territorial claims to mutual economic growth, and the implications of this shift for both the bilateral relationship and the broader ASEAN dynamics. The findings indicate that, in contrast to the approaches of Presidents Diosdado Macapagal and Ferdinand Marcos, Presidents Corazon Aquino and Fidel V. Ramos skilfully shifted the focus from the Sabah issue to fostering robust socio-economic collaboration. This pivot served as a critical turning point, establishing the foundation for a comprehensive, multi-layered cooperation that is free from the constraints of the Sabah disput
