Deep Learning Approach in Seismology: Enhancing Earthquake Forecasting using K-Means Clustering and LSTM Networks

    Get PDF
Located in the subduction zone of four tectonic plates, the high occurrence of seismic events is a severe threat in Indonesia. Mitigating the adverse effects of such disasters is essential to forecast the likelihood of future earthquakes. Consequently, developing a robust method of forecasting future earthquakes is critical to facilitate prevention and mitigation efforts. A reliable earthquake prediction method is necessary to reduce the after-effects to the greatest extent possible. This study utilises historical seismic and proposes innovative data pre-processing methods using K-means clustering to build a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model for earthquake forecasting to overcome high-disparity locations. Four LSTM layers are embedded with adjusted fine-tuned network hyperparameters to enhance forecasting accuracy. The results attain 0.379816, 0.616292, and 0.414586 for Mean Square Error (MSE), Root MSE, and Mean Absolute Error, respectively, providing significant insights into earthquake prediction. In addition, predicted seismic occurrences are plotted on a map to display their geographic location within the specified research region. This research provides significant value in facilitating the efficient distribution of resources, such as evacuating residents impacted by earthquakes or reinforcing buildings and infrastructure, for emergency responders and policymaker

Dividend Policy in Mainland China and the US: A Study on Non-Financial Listed Companies

    Get PDF
This paper aims to assess the common characteristics of dividend payers and non-payers in both China and the US, as well as the stability of dividend policies in each respective nation. The study addresses issues related to catering theory, signal theory, smoothing assumptions, and Fama-French hypotheses. Our analysis covers 509 non-financial firms during the period 2006-2016, comprising 419 firms from the US and 90 firms from China. The multinomial regression reveals that past dividend payouts are critical in explaining dividend policy in both the US and China. Firms that have consistently paid higher dividends in the preceding year are more likely to opt for dividend increases rather than omitting dividends, thus aligning with the dividend smoothing hypothesis. Additionally, firm size and stock market performance were found to be significantly influencing dividend payouts across different categories in both the US and China. However, US firms primarily drove dividend payouts through profitability and the dividend premium, while firm size and leverage heavily influenced Chinese dividends. Interestingly, Chinese firms appear to practice a less sticky dividend policy than US firms, implying that the role played by dividend policy in signalling and catering theories in China is less significant than in the U

Modeling of Entrepreneurial Intention among Public University Students in Malaysia using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM)

    Get PDF
This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing entrepreneurial intentions among undergraduate accounting students in public universities, specifically emphasizing the role of higher education. Grounded in the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior (DTPB), the research explores the psychological dimensions of entrepreneurial intention, aiming to uncover the key constructs shaping entrepreneurial behavior. A survey of 520 final-year accounting students was conducted using a structured questionnaire comprising eight items that assessed attitudes toward entrepreneurship, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The study examined the impact of these constructs on students’ intentions to pursue entrepreneurship. The analysis employed the PLS-SEM technique, supplemented by the bootstrapping method, to test the research models and validate the relationships between the constructs. Both the measurement (outer) model and the structural (inner) model of the latent constructs were thoroughly evaluated. The findings strongly supported all seven hypotheses, demonstrating significant relationships between the variables under investigation. These results provide critical insights for stakeholders and policymakers, emphasizing the importance of fostering entrepreneurial attitudes, supportive social norms, and perceptions of behavioral control to nurture entrepreneurial aspirations among students. The study’s outcomes offer valuable contributions to the development of a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem that can drive national economic growth. By elucidating the psychological and behavioral mechanisms underpinning entrepreneurship, this research enhances our understanding of the factors that motivate entrepreneurial behavior, offering a foundation for targeted interventions and strategies to cultivate entrepreneurial talent in higher education institution
