    Antonio Avena’s House of Juliet. When architecture becomes a coup de théâtre. This paper will discuss the “restoration” of the so-called House of Juliet in Verona, which was influenced by Antonio Avena and was finally conducted between November 1939 and April 1941. The data from topographical, archaeological and archival sources, together with the historical guide books and postcards, reveal that, up until the 20th century, the location of Juliet’s House was understood to be the casa torre facing via Cappello. After a long series of proposed restoration projects dating back to the early 20th century, the restoration conducted by A. Avena created Juliet’s House as we know it today in the building facing the inner courtyard. Through the study of the archival sources, old photographs and the archaeological analysis of the facies of the building, it is possible to acquire an idea of how the restoration was made and the underlying ideas of the project. The restoration consisted in a combination of recycled fragments, “antiqua spolia”, and architectonical elements emulating ancient ones, in order to create an evocative pastiche. It was meant to recreate a medieval atmosphere and to create a backdrop to the Shakespearian drama

Moving from the actual legal and institutional context, the author aims at demonstrating the weaknesses of the main critiques formulated against the reform. This will allow him to address the main problems that still affect the Ministry and to illustrate the next steps that must be taken in order to help and improve the reformation process

    Management Science for Complex Networks and Smart Water Grids: a case study in Italy

    As the effects of climate change unfold and become more visible, infrastruc- tures, especially those related to the distribution of water are the most exposed to the deep changes expected in the next years. Water is fundamental for peo- ple, and for infrastructures like energy, waste, and food production. Water sus- tainability is then a fundamental aspect to address by an efficient use of the resources and the maintenance of quality standards adopting a management science perspective. Therefore, water industry and infrastructure need a deep transformation, and we claim that this transformation is the result of a synergy between different fields or research. Our paper presents a managerial framework based on a complex systems used to reshape and optimize in different meanings the performance of the water infrastructure through the development of a case study in Italy. Our framework, called Acque 2.0 (Water 2.0) is based on these pillars: 1. The current and future scenarios for water management 2. Management science and water 3. Digitalization of water infrastructure 4. Increase the network resiliency and quality of service using complex networks 5. Use of predic- tive maintenance methods based on network simulations and big data 6. Involve utilities, regulators, policy makers, and citizens 7. Remarks and conclusion. The case study will be developed in the municipality of Viareggio, characterized by old infrastructures, seasonal variation of population, and water scarcity

    A tracking MPC formulation that is locally equivalent to economic MPC

    The stability proof for economic Model Predictive Control (MPC) is in general difficult to establish. In contrast, tracking MPC has well-established and practically applicable stability guarantees, but can yield poor closed-loop performance in terms of the selected economic criterion. In this paper, we derive a formal procedure to design a tracking MPC scheme so as to locally approximate the behaviour of economic MPC. Given an economic stage cost, the desired tracking stage cost can therefore be computed automatically. Because tracking MPC guarantees stability of the closed-loop system, our procedure succeeds if and only if economic MPC is locally stabilising. This fact can be used to certify whether economic MPC is not stabilising. We illustrate the theoretical developments in a simulated example

    A foraminiferal δ18O record covering the last 2,200 years

    Thanks to the precise core dating and the high sedimentation rate of the drilling site (Gallipoli Terrace, Ionian Sea) we were able to measure a foraminiferal δ18O series covering the last 2,200 years with a time resolution shorter than 4 years. In order to support the quality of this data-set we link the δ18O values measured in the foraminifera shells to temperature and salinity measurements available for the last thirty years covered by the core. Moreover, we describe in detail the dating procedures based on the presence of volcanic markers along the core and on the measurement of 210Pb and 137Cs activity in the most recent sediment layers. The high time resolution allows for detecting a δ18O decennial-scale oscillation, together with centennial and multicentennial components. Due to the dependence of foraminiferal δ18O on environmental conditions, these oscillations can provide information about temperature and salinity variations in past millennia. The strategic location of the drilling area makes this record a unique tool for climate and oceanographic studies of the Central Mediterranean

    Tuple Spaces Implementations and Their Efficiency

    Among the paradigms for parallel and distributed computing, the one popularized with Linda and based on tuple spaces is the least used one, despite the fact of being intuitive, easy to understand and to use. A tuple space is a repository of tuples, where process can add, withdraw or read tuples by means of atomic operations. Tuples may contain different values, and processes can inspect the content of a tuple via pattern matching. The lack of a reference implementations for this paradigm has prevented its widespread. In this paper, first we do an extensive analysis on what are the state of the art implementations and summarise their characteristics. Then we select three implementations of the tuple space paradigm and compare their performances on three different case studies that aim at stressing different aspects of computing such as communication, data manipulation, and cpu usage. After reasoning on strengths and weaknesses of the three implementations, we conclude with some recommendations for future work towards building an effective implementation of the tuple space paradigm

    On the Power of Attribute-Based Communication

    In open systems exhibiting adaptation, behaviors can arise as side effects of intensive components interaction. Finding ways to understand and design these systems, is a difficult but important endeavor. To tackle these issues, we present AbC, a calculus for attribute-based communication. An AbC system consists of a set of parallel agents each of which is equipped with a set of attributes. Communication takes place in an implicit multicast fashion, and interactions among agents are dynamically established by taking into account “connections” as determined by predicates over the attributes of agents. First, the syntax and the semantics of the calculus are presented, then expressiveness and effectiveness of AbC are demonstrated both in terms of modeling scenarios featuring collaboration, reconfiguration, and adaptation and of the possibility of encoding channel-based interactions and other interaction patterns. Behavioral equivalences for AbC are introduced for establishing formal relationships between different descriptions of the same system
