    Stability Analysis of the Horizontal Geodetic Network at the Tailings Disposal Site Jazbec

    In this thesis the horizontal geodetic network, established for deformation monitoring of the tailings disposal site Jazbec, is discussed. In the first section, basic principles of network design and geodetic methods for measurement of displacements and deformations are briefly presented. Afterwards, the procedure of Hannover approach to deformation analysis is described. The procedure for testing point displacement, that use the ratio between the displacement's size and its accuracy as a test statistic, is also explained. In the middle section, the deformation analysis for reference points of the network Jazbec is carried out. The data that is used, was collected in seven epochs. Instability of reference points S5, S4 and some minor statistically significant displacements of some other reference points are identified. In the last section, the displacements of unstable reference and object points are calculated and statistically tested. The displacements are also graphically presented

    Experimental analysis of behaviour of glass-aluminium facade system segment exposed to in plane shear cyclic loading

    The graduation thesis is divided into the several parts. First a glass and aluminium were analysed as a construction materials. The detail investigation of mechanical properties, production and treatment possibilities of individual materials is a condition for good understanding of facade system, made from this materials. When we got the knowledge about the materials, we analysed and separated the aluminium facades with a help of tehnical system solutions, provided by facade system manufacturers. For a good understanding of system behaviour itself, we obtained the sample of glass-aluminium facade segment as well. Field of earthquake resistant building design is for us very important, because Slovenia is on the earthquake hazard area. We decided to do the cyclic shear racking tests, wich will better show the behaviour of facade system under the influence of in plane horizontal loading. On the base of experimental received results, we made a numerical model with the same dimensions, like the specimen. This was used as the basis for numerical modelling of the same system with bigger dimensions, the one that we can find out in real facade systems. We compared the shifts, which we got from experimental and numerical analysis. The results of our investigations is a resistance of structural element by the limited shift. We can conclude, that the rigidity of bigger structural element decreases, because of its enlarged height. The rotations are smaller and cosequently the internal loads and damages of element are smaller as well

    Spatial planning interventions in the sea area andthe coastal zone between legality and legitimacy

    This master's thesis deals with the spatial interventions in the coastal area from the perspective of public cooperation in performing such interventions. Compared to the formal definitions and set procedures regulating spatial management on the mainland, a definite neglect and lack of regulations in the sea and narrow coastal strip area are noted. Legislation and spatial management procedures in these areas need to be revised, adjusted and updated. The situation has to be addressed in the shortest time possible and with a well thought out spatial development strategy. Developed societies definitely need to be informed of the events, to be involved in them and have the possibility to decide. The cooperation has to be based on a balanced combination of inclusion and limitation of rights, especially in the decision making processes. To remove limitations and problems of including the public in the decision making process, it is necessary to establish an open, flexible spatial planning system with a reciprocal discussion field, and a greater level of cooperation and trust between all the participants in the spatial management. The public has to be constantly informed in a comprehensive way, encouraged to participate and rise the degree of satisfaction with the (direct and indirect) values of living environment and space. The contents of the master's thesis are divided into two major parts. The first part includes analysis and synthesis of the selected literature, principles and limitations of legislative acts, defines what and how it is possible to intervene in the area of the sea and coastal strip and which protective measures have to be guaranteed while doing so. The second part pertains to the analysis of the position of the profession and the rest of the public, regarding the interventions in the sea and coastal strip area, and public participation. The second part explores individual opinions, and positions of the expert community and the public, predominantly by using quality analysis of the entry sources, implementation of in-depth unstructured interviews (discussions) with the members of the expert community (conducted in 2015, with 5 participants), and non-representative online survey (conducted in 2015, sample size 317). From the viewpoint of the individual or society (public), the experience and opinion on acceptable interventions for the specific area of the sea and coastal strip are also analysed. The findings are then quality analysed, and a new suggestion of a plan for public cooperation is prepared based on the synthesis of all other contents discussed herein. The useful result of the master’s thesis is a set of proposals for improvements, or an application of possible new approaches in the spatial management process and public cooperation. In the conclusion of the master’s thesis we formed also a preposition for improving public cooperation, based predominantly on the attitude change towards the public and use of informal cooperation approach. The proposed plan takes form of early informal approach to public cooperation. Guidelines for better and more efficient problem solving are also given, along with guidelines for public’s greater approval and acceptance of interventions in the space in general and specifically in the sea and coastal area

    Improving efficiency of notifying users about tap water quality with push services on mobile devices

    Due to their widespread presence among general public, mobile devices prove to be an excellent tool of communication. In this thesis we analyse the utilisation of such devices for alerting users about tap water quality by the local water distribution network concessionaire Komunala Novo mesto. We analyzed the current system of communication between the concessionaire and the tap water system users and on this basis we suggest improvements of the communication system by introducing a new application. We created an application for mobile devices running on mobile platforms Android and iOS that incorporates push notification services. These services enable faster and more efficient communication and consequently a better engagement of the users. As its input data, the application uses publicly available data about tap water quality, geolocation internet services, push notification internet services, and spatial application programming interfaces on mobile terminals. We conclude that modern application building tools enable the production of advanced mobile applications available on any mobile platform that bring significant improvement to the quality of communication between service providers and users

    The impact of heavy vehicles on the environment

    This master’s thesis discusses the issue of heavy-duty motor vehicles’ emissions measured at cyclic roadworthiness tests of regularly used vehicles in the framework of the measurement system and comparison of various emission measurement systems. The thesis consists of two thematic sets. The first one discusses the theory of heavy-duty vehicles’ emissions with the emphasis on measurable particulate matter at the emission source and the particulate matter related theoretical threats for life and health of people. The second set discusses the preparation and implementation of particulate matter measurements on randomly selected emission rates of heavy-duty motor vehicles as well as the analysis and evaluation of measurements. These evaluations together with emission measurements on various individual longitudinal carriageway elements represent the basis for calculations and estimations of the rate of environmental burden increase due to particulate matter

    Seismic performance assessment of an office building

    The thesis deals with the seismic performance assessment of an office building in Kranj. The design seismic forces of structural elements were estimated on the basis of the q-factor method, which is one of the possible methods to assess seismic resistance of the structure according to Eurocode 8-3. The design check was made so that all structural elements were verified by checking that seismic demands due to the reduced seismic action do not exceed the corresponding capacities. For calculation of the capacities, mean value properties of materials were used. In the fourth chapter the office building is described and the seismic demand is estimated for the selected structural elements. The structure was modelled by program Tower 7. Two structural models were made in order to investigate the effects of masonry infills. The seismic demand on the structural elements was compared to the design values of load carrying capacity. Such a comparison represents a basis for the evaluation of the seismic resistance using q-factor method. It is shown that the structure is not able to undertake the design seismic loads. However, the q-factor method provides very limited information, since it is based on the linear elastic analysis and verification of performance of each structural element without consideration of redistribution of seismic action due to structural damage. Thus the q-factor method cannot be used to provide information about the damage of the structure, which is a key information in the process of rehabilitation of a building. For this reason, it is more appropriate to assess seismic performance of existing buildings by using nonlinear analysis. Due to the lack of resources it is still difficult to perform such analysis by engineering practitioners

    Flood forecasting and warning system development its reliability and operational ability

    Quality of operational flood forecasting system (FFS) is the essential component for efficient response to the foreseen flood events. The thesis is describing why FFS is needed, how does it help, what are its parts and how does it influence the response process. But the basic question is how well the results are. In the last ten years, Slovenian floods demanded extremely high costs. To address this costly water power the development of FFS is part of nonstructural measures to reduce the flood impact. Achieving good forecasts is mostly connected to hard work in verification and learning from the models results. Therefore, it is crucial to define the methodology for operational control of the model formation to ensure continuity and improvement of its operation. FFS consists of several parts, which are interconnected and interdependent. The system requires and operational monitoring network, hydrologic model, hydrodynamic model, meteorological models, visualization and presentation of the results and last but not least the analysis of quality, efficiency, accuracy, reliability and skill. Methods of analysis are very alike and each provides target identification and presentation of the shortcomings of the results. In the analysis, deterministic and continuous analyses were used. As most efficient was proven the relative operating characteristics (ROC), which shows the relative probability of correct prediction. Verification indexes as Nash-Sucliffe efficiency (NSE) or Kling-Gubta efficiency (KGE) are seen as more useful in calibration process and binary success indexes are hydrologically seen often more appropriate for uniform discharge distributions

Technical aspects, including phases and specific characteristics of building construction as well as its actual execution are presented. Critical time and financial limits are highlighted. The analysis shows deviations between planned and actual execution. The thesis outlines the factors and provides measures that influenced successful and efficient realization of the project as requested by the client

    Temperature effect analysis of reinforced concrete observation columns

    Geodetic observations of displacements of the ground and engineering structures require wellstabilized reference points, used for measuring control points on the structure itself or in its surroundings. These points are most commonly stabilized with reinforced concrete columns, which are sometimes built improperly. If there are temperature differences within a column, this can have an impact on the position of the fixed screw for forced centering which is not negligible for precision measurements. By using the propagation of variances and covariances and Monte Carlo simulation, the thesis provides an analysis of the impact of error of the station position, orientation point and control point on the surveying results. We also carried out an experiment where we heated a column from one side and then observed the actual extent of screw displacement. While heating the column we also observed temperature transmission through the column and temperature difference this causes in the column. We have found that there was 1 mm screw displacement at temperature difference of 16,6 °C within the column which is not negligible for precision measurements

    The analysis of potentials of BIM adoption for public procurement

    The Master Thesis deals with the adoption of building information modeling or BIM into the Slovenian public procurement system. We have carried out a detailed analysis of the possibility of introducing BIM within the current legislation on public procurement. It is described how public clients can approach the implementation through tenders for public works contracts and how tenderers for design or construction can adapt. We have highlighted the potential impact of the implementation on the quality of the final products and the construction process itself.\ud Due to the global financial crisis the development of Slovenian construction sector has fallen behind the leading European and world countries. One of the construction industry areas where this is most obvious is building information modeling. Due to the complexity and uniqueness of construction projects, many foreign countries have decided to introduce BIM into the public procurement system through their legislation, which is now encouraged with the European directive. For this reason, it makes sense to find out why the implementation in Slovenia has not yet occurred, how it could be done and what would the benefits for the State, public clients and tenderers (design and construction companies) be. For this a brief summary of the main features of BIM, Slovenian procurement system and different contractual relations has been made in the first part of the Master Thesis.\ud The second part includes a detailed analysis of different means of introducing BIM in public construction contracts via requirements, tender conditions and criteria for the selection of the most economically advantageous tender and presents change requirements in the national strategy and the development of guidance and normative documents. Particular emphasis is placed on the implementation period and the necessary changes in contractual relations. Comparing Slovenia with foreign countries has allowed us to determine the main advantages of BIM implementation for public clients: the efficient use of public funds, increased quality of construction projects and improved communication and coordination.\ud The third part provides the perspective of tenderers and an analysis of the effects that the BIM implementation would have on them. Requirements for the proper BIM implementation into the firms' workflows and mutual cooperation on projects have also been discovered and presented. The main advantages of the implementation such as better and faster execution of projects and increased business competitiveness have been velidated by comparison with abroad. Analysis of both aspects (the State and the tenderers) have provided the basis for the conclusion that adoption of BIM is necessary to improve the quality of public procurement and should be encouraged by the government, as the current situation does not provide sufficient incentives for companies to develop in the direction of BIM
