Valuation of system for monitoring and controlling regular maintenance of state roads in Republic of Slovenia with suggestions for improvement

    Get PDF
In today’s world we frequently encounter difficulties with organizing and analyzing vast\ud amounts of data. Data in itself has no value and can only become valuable once\ud reorganized, arranged and analyzed in the correct way. We cannot act on the basis of the\ud data, if we do not understand the data we are given, and we cannot understand the\ud information until it is rearranged correctly and afterwards analyzed.\ud The state of public roads in Slovenia indicates insufficient maintenance of the existing\ud infrastructure. In recent years, the awareness of the importance of the above mentioned\ud problem has increased, however, the problem should be approached systematically. In the\ud area of regular maintenance of the infrastructure it is important to create a system which will\ud ensure the optimal use of financial resources. The concession of services of general\ud economic interest is a public procurement public-private partnership, therefore the role of\ud control over the regular maintenance is especially important. All parties, however, are having\ud difficulties with managing and correctly analyzing the data. A major player in the collection of\ud data is the VGRC (Maintenance of the main and regional roads) system. However, it does\ud not analyze data to the level required. For these reasons we have decided to create a design\ud for the VGRC application upgrade. The primary goal of the application would be to allow its\ud users fast and simple data analysis. We believe that this would greatly contribute to the more\ud efficient use of financial resources and to the improved quality of public road maintenance

The problems of collection and treatment of waste water in the municipality of Tišina

    Get PDF
The thesis deals with the issue of intrusion of extraneous water into the sewage system. Preventing and reducing the possibility of intrusion of extraneous water into the sewage system is an important factor in reducing operating costs of wastewater treatment plants. \ud In the theoretical part of the thesis, at the beginning, Slovenian and European legislation relating to the collection and treatment of wastewater is presented. Next there is some theory about water protection areas. More information is given on collection and treatment of urban waste water and extraneous water. The final part of the theoretical part describes municipality of Tišina and wastewater treatment plants in Murski Črnci and Petanjci.\ud In the practical part of the thesis, we calculated the proportion of extraneous water for each pumping station according to the data of the electricity consumed. From the data about sold water quantities it is clear, that the amount of water sold in Tišina is very small compared with the flow at the wastewater treatment plants, so we tried to determine which pumping stations have largest share of intrusion of extraneous water into the sewage system. Because there are 39 pumping stations that pump water towards the wastewater treatment plants, intrusion of extraneous water into the sewage system presents a huge financial burden for the municipality. For pumping stations where we calculated large shares of extraneous waters, we tried to anticipate the causes of the intrusion of extraneous water. In conclusion, the thesis presents possible solutions and measures by which it is possible to identify and reduce the intrusion of extraneous water in the sewage system

The diploma thesis discusses the area of wastewater drainage. In the theoretical part of the thesis I described the factors of water pollution, legislation in this field, elements of sewerage systems and wastewater treatment options. In the analytical part of diploma thesis I analyzed the natural and social features of the Kokra basin in the municipalities of Jezersko and Preddvor and explained the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on the environment. In case of village Mače I made a variant conceptual design of sewerage system with practical solution for reducing the pollution of surface waters from the drainage area. The first option predicts the construction of an independent sewage system with small treatment plant, while the second option consists of the sewerage system by connecting to an existing sewerage system of Preddvor. For each option I calculated total costs, based on the inventory work, operating and maintenance costs. For the subject area I determined annual intake of nitrogen and phosphorus into the environment, contributed by various sources: wastewater from households, hardened surfaces, forests, fields, roads and water treatment plants. Both elements have the excessive concentration significantly negative impact on growth in the amount of nutrients in the stream and associated eutrophication

This master thesis deals with detailed analysis of fire safety in the Elementary school of Tomo Brejc, which has recently been renovated. In the first part of the thesis fire measures for theanalysed building are designed according to the prescriptive approach, i.e. Slovenian technical guideline TSG-1- 001:2010 is used. Afterwards designed fire measures are compared with the actual condition. The designed fire measures are presented in the fire safety study. The second part of the thesis includes a comparison between fire – safety measures determined in the first part and fire measures designed according to German technical guideline MBO 2002, which was used in actual design of the discussed school. Differences between both guidelines are given, and advantages and disadvantages of Slovenian technical guideline’s TSG-1-001:2010 are pointed out. The last part of the thesis presents a detailed analysis of evacuation routes in the classroom part of the discussed building. Performance based approach is used, i.e. advanced computer softwares Pyrosim and Pathfinder are used. On the basis of the simulation results the suitability of evacuation routes in the classroom part of the school is estimated

The use of RFID technology in waste treatment billing

    Get PDF
This Master's degree work discusses possibilities of implementing new waste treatment billing system known as PAYT (Pay As You Throw), that enables charging based on actually collected quantity of waste. Thus the system of covering waste treatment costs is adapted to the principle »POLUTERS PAY« as close as possible.\ud We have analyzed the working process of Municipal Public Company, responsible for waste management in the area of 5 Communities in central part of Slovenia. The emphasis of analytic procedure has been put on Waste Treatment Cost Structure. \ud We have determined the costs that are inevitable for working process, but not influenced by the quantity of collected waste. The values of fixed and variable costs are a basis for Basic Charge and Service Charges (price depending on number of waste bin collections per month) for waste treatment.\ud Procedure for identification of collected bins is enabled by using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) data collection system. Identification is basic requirement for introducing collection measurement or weighing of collected waste in waste collection process.\ud RFID transponder is installed in waste collection bin. RFID reader installed on Refuse Collection Vehicle reads and transmits the transponder serial numbers. The tag data, combined with the time and GPS data (+ weight in weighing option) is recorded to the process unit in RCV. RFID data logs can be automatically downloaded from the process unit to designated servers in Municipal company. There the transponder ID is connected with user data and this is basis for PAYT billing

Railway traffic scheduling with use of reinforcement learning

    Get PDF
The reliability of railway traffic is commonly evaluated with train punctuality, where the\ud deviations of actual train arrivals/departures and train arrivals/departures published in the\ud timetable are compared. Minor train delays can be mitigated or even eliminated with running\ud time supplements, while major delays can lead to so-called secondary delays of other trains\ud on the network. Railway lines with high capacity utilization are more likely subject to delays,\ud since a greater number of trains means a larger number of potential conflicts and more\ud interactions between trains. Consequently, the secondary delays are harder to limit. Railway\ud manager and carrier personnel are responsible for safe, undisturbed and punctual railway\ud traffic. But unforeseen events can lead to delays, which calls for train rescheduling, where\ud new train arrivals and departures are calculated. Train rescheduling is a complex\ud optimization problem, currently solved based on dispatcher’s expert knowledge. With the\ud increasing number of trains the complexity of the problem grows, the need for a decision\ud support system increases. Train rescheduling is considered an NP-complete problem, where\ud conventional mathematical and computer optimization methods fail to find the optimal\ud solution, but artificial intelligence approaches have some measure of success. In this\ud dissertation an algorithm for train rescheduling based on reinforcement learning, more\ud precisely Q-learning, was developed. The Q-learning agent learns from rewards and\ud punishments received from the environment, and looks for the optimal train dispatching\ud strategy depending on the objective function

Application of reinforcement learning methods for optimization of traffic control on arterial roads

Nowadays, society faces several traffic related problems, such as traffic jams, time loss, lower traffic safety, increased pollution, etc., especially in urban areas. This is caused by high traffic volumes, which often exceed the capacity of the road infrastructure, particularly in peak hours. A common way of managing traffic in urban areas is traffic light control, which plays a key role in traffic safety and efficiency. To reduce delays the traffic light controllers should adjust to changing traffic volumes continuously and rapidly. Limited possibilities for road infrastructure extensions and growing traffic volumes represent a challenge for existent control techniques with increasing problem of maintaining suitable level of service. When unexpected events occur, the disadvantage of current traffic control system is even more evident. Stochastic nature of traffic and constant changes in traffic flow requires continuous adaption of traffic light controller. For solving complex problem of traffic lights optimization the system that continuously adapts and learns should be employed. Artificial intelligence approaches enable development of self-learning systems. The thesis presents a novel approach for solving problems of traffic light controller optimization with use of the reinforcement learning. The proposed algorithm enables fast and self-learning optimal strategy of traffic control in different traffic conditions. The efficiency of proposed algorithm was tested using a micro simulation tool, which simulates traffic conditions with great accuracy. The results of the performed experiments show that proposed algorithm outperforms the actuated signal controllers
