ABSTRACT In the supervised learning domain, feature selection is crucial to identify the most relevant variables that infuence the performance of a model, especially in environments where real-time inference is required or the model’s energy consumption is limited. Automatic feature selection methods are useful to deal with the complexity and high number of features in datasets, but manual feature selection by domain experts can generate a set of features that improve the performance and interpretability of the model. This thesis focuses on the application of Machine Learning models, both traditional and advanced, to solve problems in scenarios that have not been previously addressed, with the common denominator that all of them require real-time deployment. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the interrelationships between the selected input data features and the applied models. Specifcally, this thesis proposes the exploration of various ways of selecting, transforming, or replacing features in datasets to improve the performance of Machine Learning or Deep Learning models when they are deployed in real-time environments where energy consumption constraints and/or the need for fast inference may exist. To achieve these objectives, the thesis selects three use cases from diferent domains, but they all share the particularity of requiring real-time deployments: Industry 4.0, Telecommunications/ Cybersecurity, and Environment. In the Industry 4.0 use case, the thesis explores how Machine Learning models based on advanced Deep Learning techniques can predict in real-time and with sufcient lead time the behaviour of an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) controlled by a remotely virtualized Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), using the AGV’s guidance information along with statistical information about the network connection between the AGV and the PLC in a 5G network subjected to disturbances and errors. In the Telecommunications/ Cybersecurity use case, the thesis investigates how Machine Learning models can identify real-time cryptomining connections using only statistical information about network connections that may be encrypted in some cases. Finally, in the Environment use case, the thesis investigates whether a soft-sensor based on Machine Learning models could replace an expensive real sensor to measure Chl-a (Chlorophyll) fuorescence in a body of water. The soft-sensor infers the value of Chl-a from a set of variables (temperature, pH, conductivity, and battery level) obtained from low-cost real sensors. In the context of these three use cases, the thesis explores the efects of feature selection on the performance of traditional Machine Learning models and Deep Learning models. Within the latter, the thesis proposes two models derived from the Transformers architecture, which has recently revolutionized the Natural Language Processing area. The experiments conducted in this thesis demonstrate that machine learning is an efective tool to address problems related to the prediction, detection, or inference of complex events in real-time scenarios within the three selected application areas. Although these application areas present multiple diferences among them, the thesis presents a set of common conclusions about the practical application of machine learning models and the implications of feature selection on the complexity and performance of the models

ABSTRACT In recent decades, universities have become key elements in innovative ecosystems, due to their capacity to generate research results that can lead to new products or services or the improvement of existing ones, making it possible to create new jobs and wealth. Thus, the integration of the third mission, constituting what has been called the entrepreneurial university, appear as ideals to be achieved in order to contribute to achieving a better economic development of the region or country. In the European context, both the European Commission and member states have promoted numerous actions and programmes that aim to support and promote the transformation of universities into more entrepreneurial entities. Universities are expected to collaborate more intensively with companies and to commercially exploit research results through the licencing of patents to third parties or through spin-offs created by researchers. However, although there has been progress in these decades, these processes remain inefficient. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the factors involved in the process of creating and transforming an entrepreneurial university, in order to try to understand where the main barriers to transformation lie and what steps need to be taken to address them. To this end, the literature has been analysed to characterise what an entrepreneurial university is, the main factors involved in its creation, and the models that have been proposed to explain its evolution. This review indicates that the entrepreneurial university is conceived as an autonomous entity, interacting with the state and industry, but independent of both spheres. Internally, a balance between the collegiate and the executive model is necessary, in a context where all members of the university, and even more university leaders, are committed to the transformation towards an entrepreneurial model. Some authors have pointed out that, in the European context, the dependence of universities on the state is an inhibiting factor. However, an analysis of the situation in Spain, taking the factors identified as relevant as a framework for analysis, shows that the government, with its policies and laws, has created favourable conditions for the transformation of universities. Furthermore, by applying a case study, it was observed that progress in some Spanish universities compared to others is due to internal reasons related to their degree of commitment to progress in transformation. This commitment is observable through the implementation of strategic measures, actions, and specific budgets related to the third mission. Furthermore, the analysis of the distribution of power in the Spanish system reflects a high fragmentation of power within the universities, which would not be so worrying if there were a high degree of commitment on the part of university leaders to transforming the university into an entrepreneurial organisation. However, a survey of university leaders in charge of implementing policies related to the third mission has shown that there is little collaboration among other university leaders to carry out their work. The conclusions of this thesis have made it possible to propose measures aimed at achieving progressive change through a phased model in the Spanish university: some of the measures are aimed at national and regional governments, others at the universities themselves, who are ultimately responsible for their decisions, successes, and mistakes

A Quantitative Analysis of an Automatic Code Generation Tool for Space Software Applications

Model-driven engineering (MDE) has become a leading methodology for the design and development of Real-Time Embedded Systems (RTES). It makes use of automatic code generation tools to reduce time, cost and effort associated with writing and maintaining software. However, automatic code generators tend to produce poor quality and inefficient code, which is unacceptable for safety critical systems. The verification and validation of such systems are crucial activities that require high-level code quality and coverage enforced by standards such as DO-178C/ED-12C for airborne software or ECSS in the European space domain. Simulink is a modelling tool offered by MathWorks widely used in the aerospace sector to develop and simulate models. The QGen tool-suite offers a C and Ada code generator appropriate for Simulink and Stateflow models. In this paper, we evaluate QGen aiming to demonstrate its applicability in embedded software products, its integrability in other modelling tools, and the quality of the autogenerated software. To that end, a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) have been defined to measure quantitative values mostly obtained with open-source tools. The evaluation adopts the Attitude Control System from the UPMSat-2 satellite as the technology demonstrator and its simulation and control Simulink models serve as evaluation models for this analysis. The contribution of this study has been to establish a quantitative methodology for the evaluation of the QGen tool-suite based on software metrics at varying granularity levels such as model and source code. This methodology should help the researchers to identify further metrics and use them to analyze not only automatic code generators, but also to establish a criterion to assess the technology readiness of other software products and tools

    Rem before Koolhaas. Arquitectura oral

Ámsterdam: Bonaventura, 24 de septiembre, 1966, p. 8 ----------ABSTRACT---------- We can practice architecture like a honeybee or a hornet. Most architects are honey bees, but Rem Koolhaas is a hornet: he stings you where no one else does (1). Koolhaas is, above all, an interviewer. His interviews contribute to his architectural production as a way of working, thinking and speculating. Moreover, they are a part of the oral history of architecture, a discipline that remains largely unexamined and on which, nevertheless, Koolhaas’ architecture of conversations is based. He began this work between 1963 and 1968, when he did interviews for the Dutch newspaper Haagse Post. Beyond the biographical, the interview is one of his most frequent working formats, and he began in an era of explosion of publications and other media that established the modern architectural canon by illustrating McLuhan’s proposition that “the medium is the message”. What Koolhaas demonstrates through his interviews is how to decipher history, to interpret the architecture of others and to include issues that have previously been left outside of the discipline. This thesis attempts to rectify the omission of Koolhaas’ role as an interviewer. In order to accomplish this task, it was necessary to review an entire oral archive from which certain voices and stories were absent in the architectural history record, despite being the product or consequence of his work. This can be done by analysing both his questions and the answers he obtained, as well as the focus of attention of the media when Koolhaas himself was interviewed. The aim of this work is not to draw linguistic lessons from journalistic techniques that can be applied in architectural practice, but to show that Koolhaas’ interviewing technique is a vehicle for the production of critical thinking. The aim is to show that his interviews perform a practical, theoretical, and critical function, and to thus contribute to the understanding of the essayistic, instrumental, and speculative value of oral transmission as a design tool in itself. The first part of this thesis deals with the literary form of the interview as an epistemological form and the context of a little researched architectural interview as a fertile ground for the study of the discipline. The second part will provide specific details of the interviews conducted by Koolhaas: what is the product, its categorisation and, finally, its significance in culture. These spoken resources, far from being a fetish, represent the theoretical classification of an architecture that applies orality as a method of work, design, thought, and exploration. Just as some architectural historians and writers have advocated and endeavoured to write alternative and more inclusive architectural stories, Rem before Koolhaas adds that of an oral architecture, of a multifaceted architect who is at the same time an interviewer. ABSTRACT In the face of the global climate crisis, renewable energies must advance to counteract the irreversible effects of climate change. An opportunity arises for cost-effective technologies, such as photovoltaic solar power. In this project, a technical feasibility study is carried out for a photovoltaic installation located in Castilla-La Mancha. Addressing the client's needs, a site evaluation is conducted, analyzing potential restrictions or terrain characteristics that could impact the plant. Likewise, an environmental study is undertaken to identify and mitigate potential environmental impacts, all thanks to Qgissoftware. The PVsystsoftware will also be utilized, incorporating specific parameters and potential losses that might occur in the plant, in order to conduct simulations of the installation. Through these simulations, we will verify whether the needs described by the client are met, and consequently, whether the project is technically viable

Over the last few decades, the Internet of Things has become so quintessentially relevant in our daily lives, that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to conceive the thought of conducting routine tasks without yielding to the benefits that this paradigm has to offer. Far from being considered a consolidated and regulated paradigm, the Internet of Things has multiple unaddressed challenges that perilously leads to unresolved security and privacy issues. This dissertation particularly focuses on a specific and extremely vulnerable category of private environments, that of, smart homes. Due to the exposure of this space to multiple security and privacy threats, an individual’s intimate native environment, on innumerable occasions, is compromised. The reality is that just as technology is as uninterruptedly evolving, so have attacks on devices, which in turn, are becoming increasingly sophisticated and complex to detect and prevent. Despite the existence of security tools and countermeasures, or regulations that promise to protect data privacy, the smart home continues to be an extremely susceptible target for elaborate attacks on connected devices. Therefore, the aim of this Doctoral Thesis is to contribute to the improvement of the security and privacy of connected devices within smart homes. To this end, an evolutionary line of research is proposed by addressing the issue, introducing three contributions to the main framework. Based on the literature review carried out, a glossary of seven security and three privacy vulnerabilities is proposed, which are conducive to the materialisation of attacks and threatening situations. In order to corroborate the adverse circumstances affecting the smart home, a set of commercial devices has been selected to simulate attacks and test the devices’ response to them. Undoubtably, the results of this partial contribution reveal serious vulnerabilities affecting data integrity, availability and confidentiality. As a result of the tests carried out, a methodology for vulnerability assessment of connected devices in the smart home is proposed. The main objective is to provide a set of guidelines to assess the security and privacy status of a device by analysing its response in an attack simulation scenario. The second contribution addresses the still existing security and privacy issues surrounding the smart home, which show a severe lack of protection mechanisms to protect itself from these vulnerabilities. With respect to this situation, a system in charge of managing the security and privacy of connected devices is proposed. This system, which is integrated in the router, is made up of a set of components that address the problem through the tasks of monitoring and data acquisition, information storage, data analysis, event processing, and data visualisation. As a solution to the aforementioned problems, a set of mechanisms is proposed to further automate the secure integration and continuous monitoring of devices in the smart home. Thus, these mechanisms, which can be integrated into the proposed system, provide the home with real-time management capabilities of the devices and notification of alerts detected in the home network. In short, this Doctoral Thesis proposes three contributions to the framework of security and privacy of digital home devices focused on the detection, prevention and resolution of problems derived from the vulnerabilities of the devices. To this end, different lines of research have been presented that address the unquestionable adaptation and development of new protective strategies which shields and safeguards the security and privacy of smart home assets

Assessing the water-energy-food nexus : A novel participatory framework that combines System Dynamics and Cross-Impact Analysis to address cross-sectoral challenges in Andalusia

In today's world, ensuring water, energy and food security, as well as conserving ecosystems are some of the most pressing sustainability challenges. Our current systems of food production, energy use, and water management often operate in silos. However, these sectors are, by nature, interconnected, food production requires both water and energy, while pumping, treating, and transporting water require energy, and energy production requires water, among many other interrelationships. This siloed approach to management leads to a lack of coordination and significant trade-offs across systems. Moreover, this lack of coordination across sectors and socioeconomic activities has negative consequences for ecosystem conservation, which is vital for ensuring natural resource security. To tackle these issues, it is imperative to design policies or solutions that can effectively address sectoral and cross-sectoral challenges. The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus approach is a systemic and integrated approach designed to manage resources and coordinate sectors comprehensively. By increasing efficiency, reducing trade-offs, building synergies, and improving governance across sectors and resources, the nexus approach has the potential to enhance water, energy, and food security. These characteristics make the WEF nexus an effective approach for supporting policy making. Consequently, the nexus approach has gained considerable attention in the last decade, leading the scientific community to develop new methodologies and adapt existing tools to address cross-sectoral challenges, and guide policy making efforts. Despite the advancements and ongoing efforts, some of these methodologies are too theoretical, conceptual, or complex to put into practice. Achieving effective governance of the WEF nexus remains elusive, making it difficult to address water-energy-food security and ecosystem conservation. Within the scope of this PhD thesis, we have conducted a literature review and identified up to eleven main features in methodologies and tools that are necessary to effectively evaluate the WEF nexus. Based on these features and our knowledge, we selected four criteria that are crucial to operationalize the nexus: (1) tools that integrate quantitative and qualitative information, (2) tools capable of analysing cross-sectoral policies, (3) tools capable of assessing at different spatial scales, and (4) tools capable of simulating future scenarios at different temporal scales. After evaluating various methodologies and tools that address the nexus, we have found no methodology or tool that meets all four criteria. Therefore, the overarching objective of this thesis is to fill this gap in nexus studies by developing a novel participatory WEF nexus framework for co-designing and evaluating nexus solutions, encompassing these four criteria. The Solution Evaluation Framework (SEF) consists of five main phases: (1) identifying nexus solutions, (2) nexus dialogues, (3) nexus modelling, (4) nexus evidence, and (5) nexus-coherence assessment. Throughout the evaluation process, the framework integrates various methodologies. In the nexus dialogues phase, we engage stakeholders and experts from different nexus sectors to identify challenges, co-design solutions and understand the cross-sectoral interlinkages using Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping (FCM). In the nexus modelling phase, we apply system dynamics models (SDM) to simulate different solution scenarios and quantify cross-sectoral interlinkages. Finally, in the nexus-coherence assessment phase, we utilize cross-impact analysis (CIA) and network theory to integrate quantitative and qualitative methodologies and measure the synergies and trade-offs of implementing a nexus solution. The other objective of this thesis is to test the usefulness and applicability of the developed framework. To achieve this, the framework was applied to a practical case study involving an increase in irrigation water prices in Andalusia, Spain for the horizon of 2030. Following the methodology of the SEF, we worked with a panel of experts representing various sectors in Andalusia. Additionally, a system dynamics model was developed to simulate the WEF nexus system in the region. Finally, cross-impact analysis (CIA) and network theory were used to evaluate the solution. The results of the case study revealed that there is a sensitive relationship between water availability, irrigation costs and agricultural production, mainly due to the high level of technology in agricultural irrigation systems in the region. An increase in water price could generate synergies by promoting water security and ecosystem conservation. However, trade-offs were observed, particularly impacting the food sector in the region. The main challenges encountered in applying the framework were the integration of qualitative and quantitative information and the reconciliation of spatial and temporal scales across sectors. Beyond the obtained results, the evaluation of this case study allowed us to demonstrate the capability of the SEF to evaluate nexus solutions by uncovering hidden properties, identifying leverage points, and highlighting key aspects of the complex cross-sectoral system. The framework can be adapted to accommodate different case studies, considering their unique challenges and spatial and temporal scales. Furthermore, it facilitates the evaluation and coordination of multiple policies simultaneously, thereby contributing to nexus-coherence policy making, which gives it a competitive advantage over other methodologies focused on nexus analysis. To conclude, participatory approaches that combine qualitative and quantitative methods prove suitable for identifying and evaluating solutions aimed at improving WEF nexus governance.

ABSTRACT In the present day, sensors permeate the lives of millions of people, thanks to their integration in the most disparate objects and their employment in multiple fields. Among them, biological sensors based on optical transducers have become fundamental in the health research field. However, their industrialization is often a difficult task to achieve, as the production of high number of units for the market usually requires different processes to the ones employed in research. The present thesis tries to solve this issue regarding the fabrication of vertically interrogated sensors based on arrays of resonant nanopillars (RNPs), a type of transducer that has shown promising performances in multiple scientific publications. This work comprises two main objectives that can be summed up as follows: first, the development of a reliable industrially-scalable protocol for the fabrication of periodic arrays of RNPs; second, the design and characterization of novel RNPs-based sensors. While sensors based on RNPs have previously been fabricated by means of techniques like electron beam lithography (EBL) and laser interference lithography (LIL), these methods are all either time demanding, very expensive or low throughput, and a higher scale fabrication is discouraged (when not downright impossible) with said procedures. For this reason, the first objective of the present thesis focuses on the high throughput technique known as nanoimprint lithography (NIL), specifically in its variation called soft UV-NIL. Moreover, apart from the lithography, other steps employed in the fabrication process have been studied and optimized for the obtention of RNPs in different substrates, like surface modification, metal deposition, dry and wet etching. After multiple tests changing different parameters and the inclusion, optimization and modification of various steps, a reliable soft UV-NIL protocol employing molds made of UV-PDMS (KER 4690) was developed. The original pattern was reproduced on a Si wafer (called master template) through EBL and then replicated over the stamp by direct polymer casting. Samples fabricated through imprinting employing said polymeric mold featured periodic arrays of nanometric holes for the fabrication of metal masks through residual layer removal, metal deposition and lift-off of the resist. After that, reactive ion etching (RIE) techniques were employed for top-down fabrication of RNPs in different substrates. The second objective, on the other hand, delt with the design of novel RNPs configurations. This consisted not only in the theoretical calculation of the optical response of the different multilayered substrates employed for the fabrication of the nanostructured surface, but also in the study of an original RNPs-based sensor covered with indium tin oxide (ITO), a conductive and transparent material. This way, electrical activity can be added to the photonic transducer while maintaining its optical response, opening the gate for dual optical-electrochemical sensing. Performances of the sensors fabricated in the framework of this thesis were obtained employing a FT-VIS-NIR spectrometer, and sensitivity of each configuration was calculated by immersing the nanostructured surface in liquids with different refractive indexes (RIs), a practice commonly known as bulk sensing performance measurement. Finally, a label-free immunoassay was performed over the ITO-covered RNPs to confirm its suitability as biosensor for future tests. Biological detection was enhanced with gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) and their presence after incubation was confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique, also corroborating their absence in the negative control
