ABSTRACT With this doctoral thesis, entitled "The Royal Palace of Madrid: Filippo Juvarra and the Engagement Letter”, I have studied the origin of the Royal Palace of Madrid, as we know it today, after the disappearance of the old Alcázar, which was devoured by flames on Christmas Eve, 1734. Although the New Palace has been studied by numerous historians and architects, I believe that there is a need for new research focusing on the reason for its peculiar location, in relation to the panorama of the city of Madrid on its western cornice. In order to do this, it was fundamental to review the study of an unfinished project carried out 15 years earlier by the architect Filippo Juvarra for the Patriarchal Church of Portugal. This ultimately served not only as a lure to be hired by Philip V for his new palace but also as an inspiration for his apprentice and successor Giovanni Battista Sacchetti, for the final settlement of the new building. Since the beginning of my research on the Palace, both through written literature and word of mouth by researchers and historians, I have always heard the "same version" of its origin. They say Philip V ordered the best architect of the time to come to Spain. They stress the "megalomaniac" design he created for the New Palace and his desire to build it on the Altos de San Bernardino instead of on the ashes of the Alcázar. They never overlook how he died suddenly in 1735 and wasn’t able to begin its construction. They go on to explain how the king sent for a disciple of his and ordered him to "adapt" his design to the desired location from the beginning. They emphasize how Sacchetti brilliantly adapted the palace plan to the specific location, extracting from Juvarra’s project the current layout of a building with a square floorplan, central courtyard, and towers on the corners and moving to a flatter building, in the style of the French palaces, to a high-rise building, with more Italian characteristics. However, despite all the facts above, not a single historian has ever stopped to consider what the purpose was for the illustrious disciple's designs for the exterior works of the Palace. It is surprising that, after insisting on the strong influence that Juvarra's design undoubtedly had on the final configuration of the Palace plan, historians seem to forget to relate the figure of the master also to the exterior development of these works. It is impossible to understand the Palace-Exterior works as a whole without understanding that Juvarra's shadow is elongated. I have tried, therefore, to focus only on the location, disregarding the building itself, given that this architectural structure has been widely studied. I have found this exercise of abstraction to be particularly interesting. Assuming the structure to be perfectly built therefore allows me to delve into those architectural elements of containment and communication, such as ramps, squares, and stairs, in its own evocative capacity. I do not intend to speak of the interior spaces of the palace, of its halls and bedrooms, of its chapel and kitchen, but of the greatness of its forgotten exterior spaces. Finally, in an exercise of syncretism, in this historical case, I explore the relationship between the Palace and the Gallery of the Royal Collections, as its natural extension, joining both buildings together, whose composition was imagined long before its own construction. The first of them, of perfect origin, was born in part from an idealized design for another settlement. The second, on the contrary, of imperfect origin, arises precisely as a concrete response to a particular problem and landscape. In both cases, the ramps and circulations that connect these golden architectures allow us to enjoy them, regardless of their origin. As Emilio Tuñón stated, on many occasions "architecture is produced at the limits”. In this case, time is the imposed limit that explores this research

Active Organic Waveguide Structures for Photonic Devices

The present PhD work is aimed at the development of a new research line, within the framework of organic photonics. This Thesis has been developed at CEMDATIC R&D Center, located at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. During this work, a number of materials have been studied, and many devices have been manufactured and characterized. The obtained results and conclusions will pave the way to the development of novel devices in the field of biosensing. Furthermore, new fabrication techniques have been studied and developed using a great variety of materials, whose performance simplify the routines of manufacturing and the equipment used in well-known and established technologies for micro- and nanofabrication. The main motivation of this work has been driven by the need of simplifying the process of external light coupling into micro or even nano-sized waveguides, which constitutes a fundamental keystone in the photonic integrated circuit technology. The light coupling process is commonly carried out using optical assemblies with micrometric precision, which require electronic control modules in some cases. A suggested solution to this issue can be the incorporation of compatible luminescent materials within the solid matrices that constitute the polymer waveguides themselves. Organic dyes are exceptional candidates for doping polymeric matrices, as they normally show high chemical compatibility with the prepolymers. Owed to the diversity of dyes, whose emission band can be tuned depending on the molecular structure, it would be possible to obtain active matrices emitting at a wide range of wavelengths. Thus, luminescent polymeric structures can be manufactured considering the chemical compatibility of the dyes and the resin molecules under work. The dye not only has to show excellent solubility properties; additionally, it has to maintain its optical properties during and after the curing process of the polymeric material. Along this Thesis, a wide variety of photoresists of different chemical composition have been employed, and organic dye doping has been demonstrated. The obtained luminescent structures, in combination with other light-emitting molecules, cover the whole visible spectrum. Furthermore, if these doped matrices can amplify the light through stimulated emission processes, they may be further used for the design and fabrication of Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers. Therefore, another goal of this Thesis is the demonstration of light amplification by stimulated emission of photoresists doped with dyes. On the other hand, the ability to generate light within photopolymerizable matrices allows the design and manufacture of sensing devices based on evanescent field excitation principles. Basically, the light that is emitted after exciting externally an active zone can be used to couple a non-active waveguide. These travelling waves can excite targets located on the surface of the waveguide by evanescent field. The light coupling is dependent on the properties of the materials involved in the structure of the devices. In this work, a great variety of cladding and guiding materials have been tested and studied, with the objective to determine the optimal conditions in which the coupling and guiding of light is more efficient. Finally, with the aim of simplifying some of the fabrication techniques commonly used within the framework of micro and nano fabrication of organic structures and devices, we have focused on the development and study of some soft-lithography fabrication techniques, whose processes are based on the use of Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PDMS) molds. The PDMS molds are widely used in traditional Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL) due to its low Young’s module and low surface energy, high flexibility, high gas permeability and low cost. In this Thesis, molds of PDMS have been employed to transfer specific patterns from a master to a given substrate, using two main manufacturing techniques known as Solvent- Assisted Micromolding (SAMIM) and Microtransfer Molding (MIMIC). While the first allows the transfer of a pattern (in this case nano-sized gratings) onto a given material in a very efficient way, the latter would allow us to manufacture micro and macro sized structures from the channels or negative patterns generated in the PDMS mold. Therefore, the objective of this Thesis is to investigate new optically active structures combined with efficient manufacturing techniques that can be employed in more complex technologies.

ABSTRACT Replacing bare fallow with cover crops (CC) promotes the sustainability of agroecosystems by reducing environmental risks such as soil degradation, nitrate leaching or climate change, as well as improving soil health and nutrient recycling, with potential positive effects on productivity. Legume-based CCs are of particular interest because of their ability to fix atmospheric N and thus contribute to reducing synthetic nitrogen fertilisation, as well as providing rapidly mineralising residues and stimulating soil microbiological activity. However, the benefits of CC on soil health, ecosystem services and yield may be conditioned by their management and modulated particularly by water availability and type of tillage. In this work, two aspects of CC management, the method of termination and the form of entry into the rotation, which can determine the level of legume entry into the system, were focused on in order to assess the legacy effects on soil health and early response of the subsequent maize. Two trials were carried out, one under semi-controlled greenhouse conditions and the other under field conditions. In the greenhouse experiment, the legacy effects of four common methods of termination of a barley-vetch CC mixture were evaluated under two levels of water availability, optimum and deficit. The methods evaluated were mowing and subsequent incorporation of residues (INC), glyphosate (GLI), roller crimper (ROL) and the combination of glyphosate and roller crimper (RGL), together with a non-CC control. An alkaline, sandy loam-textured, nutrient-poor soil, which received reduced fertilisation, was used. The effects were studied at maize pre-emergence and 57 days after sowing on soil physico-chemical, nutritional and microbiological properties, as well as maize development and nutritional parameters. Water level modulated soil microbial response to CC termination methods, especially in glyphosate methods. Legacy effects on soil microbiological attributes were noticeable and evolved differently from pre-emergence of maize until almost 2 months later. In the final sampling, INC showed the best microbiological response at both water levels improving most microbiological attributes. ROL was the second most beneficial method, especially under optimal irrigation dose, promoting fungal abundance, but nullifying the positive effect of CC on bacteria. Regardless of water level, GLI and RGL showed a similar microbiological response. In well-watered conditions, GLI and RGL had a negative effect on total fungi, which separated the RGL response from the ROL response. Compared to microbiological, soil physicochemical response and crop response to the treatments was lower. Maize responded more to irrigation level than to termination method and the effect was greater on maize developmental variables than on nutritional variables. Maize in INC was more sensitive to irrigation dose, although soil response in this method was barely sensitive, and in deficit irrigation it performed worse than the rest. The effects of different forms of CC introduction were evaluated in a biannual irrigated maize-wheat rotation located in the experimental farm "La Canaleja" (Community of Madrid), with a calcic Cambisol soil under a semi-arid Mediterranean climate. Cover crops can be included in rotations between two consecutive main crops, and can also partially overlap in time with a main row crop through "interseeding". This technique allows for additional legume CC in maize and thus intensification of the rotation. However, the benefits of intensification may depend on the level of legume input into the agro-ecosystem and the type of tillage. In the third year of the trial, at two points in time in the early maize phase, the effects of three levels of legume input were evaluated: i) R0, no CC; ii) R1, mixed CC of barley and vetch; and iii) R2, interseeded vetch in maize in addition to the mixed CC, under two types of tillage, traditional (TT) and minimum tillage (MT), involving different methods of CC termination. The type of tillage affected R1 the most, with R1MT, i.e. a single leguminous CC input that is terminated with roller crimper and whose residues are barely buried, being the treatment that led to better soil health overall. In contrast, the absence of CC together with traditional tillage (R0TT) showed the worst soil response. The higher legume input (R2) under minimum tillage was the best combination for early maize development, but not for soil health due to possible negative effects on organic matter accumulation and other variables. The use of CC favoured early maize growth, while mycorrhization, enhanced under traditional tillage, favoured crop nutrition. \ud This research finds that CC management practices, both the method used for CC termination and the way CCs are introduced into the rotation, largely condition the expected benefits of CCs on soil health and subsequent crop performance. Furthermore, water availability modulates the legacy effects in the case of the termination method by amplifying the differences in high irrigation doses, and the tillage system and consequent CC termination method modulates them when the input of legumes into the agroecosystem varies because of different ways of introducing CCs into the rotation. It is also found that the microbiological response of the soil to the treatments was significantly greater than the physico-chemical response of the soil and the response of the subsequent main crop. Contrary to expectations, the studied CC management treatments, both under semi-controlled conditions and in the field, that performed better from a soil health point of view did not lead to better performance of the subsequent early-stage maize. Therefore, better overall soil health does not necessarily lead to better early maize performance in the short term. On the other hand, since increased legume input into the system combined with reduced tillage could be negative for soil carbon sequestration, its evolution should be monitored, especially under the conditions of water availability and high temperature typical of Mediterranean irrigation. It is necessary to assess the legacy effects of CC management practices on soil and crop health in the medium and long term under different soil and climatic conditions to elucidate the mechanisms involved and to offer adapted solutions to improve the sustainability of farming systems

Abstract: The aim of this project is to develop the sensorisation and data collection system for climate-controlled racks in remote electronic equipment. It is designed to assist in the maintenance and monitoring of this equipment and is framed within the area of telecommunications infrastructures. To support telecommunication networks, an extensive infrastructure of antennas, repeaters, communication stations, etc… is necessary, which are spread over several areas to cover as much of the geographical area as possible. The maintenance of this electronic equipment is in most cases a reactive maintenance that is carried out in case of failure, repaired, and returned to operation. This generates downtime in the networks supported by these systems, which translates into economic and service losses. To deal with this problem, other predictive maintenance approaches are beginning to be applied to monitor the state of equipment and prevent failures or malfunctions and can act before they cause downtime in the corresponding equipment. This requires a system that collects data from equipment such as back-up batteries, air conditioning systems, power supply equipment and sends it periodically to be stored and used appropriately. Our focus will be on equipment in areas that are difficult to access such as railways, mountainous areas or building rooftops that require access to overhead networks to communicate with the outside world. Therefore, we will develop a Gateway with access to communication networks such as 2G, 3G or 4G that has the possibility to collect, through the protocols and physical layers most used in the industry, all kinds of valuable data from electronic equipment. In addition, a server will be designed with internet access to which the data will be sent, with the capacity to store them by implementing a database. In this way the project will be divided into a Gateway and a server that will be developed in parallel and incrementally, joining in the last phases of the project when the communication between the Gateway and the server is complete. The result is expected to be a Gateway that can connect to a wide range of electronic equipment in the station or cabin in which it is integrated, as well as a server capable of receiving data from more than one Gateway and storing it appropriately. The scalability of the complete system is key to have a network of Gateways extracting information and allowing the user to monitor and plan more advanced data processing

The ergogenic effects of acute carbohydrate feeding on endurance performance: a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression

    No full text
A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to analyze the effect of carbohydrate (CHO) intake during exercise and some variables that could moderate this effect on endurance performance. We included 136 studies examining the effect of CHO ingestion during endurance exercise in the meta-analysis. The overall effect on performance showed a significant increase after CHO intake compared to the placebo/control groups. A larger effect of CHO consumption is observed in time to exhaustion than in time trials performance test. Moreover, the effectiveness of CHO supplementation was greater the longer the duration of the events. Also, there seems to be a higher effect of CHO intake in lower trained than in higher trained participants. In contrast, the magnitude of performance change of CHO intake is not affected by the dosage, ergometer used, the type of intake of the CHO ingestion and the type of CHO. In addition, a lower rate of perceived exertion and higher power and heart rate are significantly associated with the ingestion of CHO during endurance exercise. These results reinforce that acute CHO feeding is an effective strategy for improving endurance performance, especially, in less trained subjects participating in time to exhaustion tests of longer durations

Abstract: The conducted project involves the development and simulation of a logic circuit that resembles the Quantum Fourier Transform circuit, using a low-level hardware description language. The goal is to explore the feasibility of simulating quantum circuits on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Currently, an increasing number of companies are supporting and allocating resources to the advancement of quantum computing as a promising alternative to surpass the computing and processing capabilities of the most powerful supercomputers in the technology sector. Despite the interest in this technology, the manufacturing of quantum computers will remain a complex challenge, as the quantum qualities that set this technology apart from classical computing and nearly impossible to create and maintain over time. For these reasons, researchers are seeking alternatives to simulate the behavior of quantum algorithms without depending on the unstable elements of quantum physics. One of these alternatives is based on emulating quantum circuits using FPGAs. This methodology began to be implemented around 2004, and new research focused on simulating various quantum circuits using hardware description languages continues to emerge. In this project, our focus lies in implementing the Quantum Fourier Transform circuit using the low-level hardware language VHDL. We developed each of the matrices that make up the quantum circuit using binary arithmetic and subsequently used Quartus to analyze and stimulate the design on an Intel Cyclone IV FPGA, aiming to study resource utilization and circuit scalability of our design

Abstract: The general purpose of the project called Pulse Position Modulation Algorithms in Underwater Environments is to develop a powerful tool for the study of different algorithms that allows testing in an environment similar to the seabed, thus reducing time and costs; expenses and time spent on testing at sea, without a minimum guarantee of success. The work is based on pulse position modulation, since one of the objectives is to develop algorithms that consume little processing capacity, one of the best modulations for that is PPM. A ray tracing tool, Bellhop, will be used. With this tool it will be possible to create an underwater channel, indicating depths, sound velocities in the water, orography of the seabed, angles at which the rays strike both the bottom and the surface or the size of the waves. This will be used to obtain the response to the impulse of the underwater channel and from there, algorithms and their corresponding tests will be developed to evaluate its correct operation. All this has been carried out with the Python programming language, chosen for its power, number of libraries for communications and signal processing and because it is a language that is being used profession-ally and in research projects. Underwater acoustic communications is a field of technology that is currently being exploited. The oceans and seas make up approximately 71% of the earth's area and they are a source of wealth. Maritime research is being carried out because of the importance of the oceans for the environment, the importance of the fisheries sector as a source of food and wealth for countries, the benefits in the tourism sector which is related to the good state of the seas and oceans and, in more specific cases, such as obtaining fossil fuels. Three algorithms have been developed to find out which one has the best communication per-formance. To find out, the corresponding tests have been developed, which have to do with a specific scenario in the underwater environment and the transmission of thirty-two bit messages, from different depths and distances. A Python tool has been obtained to simulate modulations in underwater environments and the best PPM modulation algorithm among those developed. The results obtained are a breakthrough for further research into modulations in underwater acoustic communications

Abstract: The purpose of this project is the design and complete development of an embed system functioning as an inertial measurement unit. The microcontroller used is a Raspberry Pi 3B+, loaded with Linux Operating System. The rest of the elements of the design are selected with the condition of not being directly compatible with Raspberry Pi, so that it is necessary to adapt the hardware in order to make it possible to couple all the peripherals, and develop own software for its control and management. Additionally, it is stablished that the application software is going to be implemented in C programming language, using high level libraries. This way, the performance of the general input-output pins is going to be analyzed when they are managed using this high level language, which is the second purpose of this project The inertial measurement devices are characterized for generating information about an object positioning, such as its orientation, velocity or inclination. These devices are usually constituted by an accelerometer and gyroscope sensor, even though in this project it is completed by adding a magnetometer to the design. After a thorough process of analyzing the different market options, it is selected the integrated circuit BMI160, conformed by an accelerometer and a gyroscope, and the magnetometer BMI150. One of the reasons for choosing these two components is the possibility of connecting the magnetometer to the BMI160. This way it is possible to work as if there was only one integrated circuit. In order to display the data extracted from the sensors, a small 240x320 touchscreen is incorporated to the design. This way the user is allowed to interact with the device, selecting the sensor which data is going to be read or configuring the sensor as pleased. Additionally to the measurements read from the sensors, the tilt angles of the axis are also displayed and an electronic compass is implemented. The project is developed gradually, meaning that each element is managed separately, creating specialized libraries, to finally being able of integrating everything in the complete design. The sensors block is the first one created. In this block it is necessary to implement the I2C communication protocol to enable the configuration of the 3 sensors and the reading of the measurements done, for its processing. The next block created is the touchscreen, which divided in its touchscreen section and its visual display section. The first one, uses the same I2C channel as the sensors to communicate the Raspberry Pi the coordinates of a touch in the screen. The visual section needs two different protocols, one serial protocol for the control and configuration of the display and another one for the transmission of the images. Both of them are completely codified due to the inexistence of libraries, since it was established the condition of not being prepared for its coupling with Raspberry Pi. The last step is the integration of these two elements with the Raspberry Pi, using a state machine. It is also necessary to design a board for the mounting of these elements into one single device, implementing the different interfaces and the distribution of the different power levels. After analyzing the obtained results, it is concluded that the design reaches the marked purposes. It is verified that the sensors are calibrated correctly and that the obtained measurements are of good quality. It is checked that the images shown in the display are exactly as they should and that the display reacts as expected to the interaction with the touch layer. However, the analysis of the performance of the input-output pins reveals the need of limiting the design’s functionality in order to be supported. This is due to the touchscreen protocol, which demands and excessive signal frequency. For this reason, the value of this frequency is reduced from 6.4 MHz that indicates the manufacturer to 1.7 MHz, and the number of data signal from 24 to 1, meaning that only black and white images can be displayed. For determining these values a detailed study of the different delays involved in the application cycle is made, reaching the conclusion that the high level management of the input-output pins is limited to frequencies lower than 2 MHz

Abstract: The main objective of the project "FPGA prototyping of RISC-V heterogeneous multiprocessor systems" is to develop and prototype in FPGA heterogeneous multiprocessor systems based on the RISC-V instruction set assembly (ISA) using the VCU128 development board. This project seeks to explore the advantages and challenges of implementing heterogeneous multiprocessor systems on FPGA platforms, in order to improve performance and efficiency in high performance applications. To achieve this, the platform called HERO has been chosen with the configuration of a 64-bit RISC-V host CPU (Central Processing Unit) and a RISC-V core accelerator. In the technological context, the RISC-V ISA has become an attractive option due to its open nature, which provides flexibility and enables customization in the design of embedded systems. In addition, the use of FPGA allows an efficient and scalable implementation of multiprocessor systems, taking advantage of the configurability and parallelization offered by this technology. During the development of the project, a methodology has been followed from hardware design and implementation to software development and optimization. Hardware description tools and languages such as SystemVerilog and software development tools have been used for programming RISC-V processors. In terms of economic and environmental constraints, the use of FPGA allows a significant reduction in the development and manufacturing costs of multiprocessor systems, compared to the implementation on ASIC chips. In addition, the use of FPGA has a lower environmental impact by avoiding the mass production of specific components. Due to the difficulties encountered during the development of the project for the adaptation of the HERO platform to the VCU128 board, finally a CPU called CVA6 that implements the 64-bit RISC-V instruction set has been prototyped and a printed circuit board (PCB) has been designed and fabricated to provide some peripherals that are not included in the VCU128 board and are necessary for the prototyped system
