ABSTRACT
During the period of the so-called "real estate boom", between the years 2000 to mid-2007, all kinds of promotions were developed in an uncontrolled manner. Subsequently, after the bursting of the Spanish real estate bubble in 2008, the year in which construction in general and housing in particular came to a screeching halt, housing renovation began to have a greater presence in future actions to activate the construction sector. However, the housing plans and the regulatory modifications that were approved, including the Land Law, aimed at this objective, did not achieve the expected results in terms of the number of renovation homes.
The health crisis of 2020, which affected the entire world as a result of the COVID-19 virus, led to a new economic crisis, aggravated in the year 2022 by the raw materials and energy crisis following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The mechanism of economic recovery after the pandemic proposed by Europe seeks to boost housing renovation again, to reduce CO2 emissions and the energy needs consumed by housing, noting that after periods of crisis, governments seek to stimulate the economy through the real estate sector.
The main objective of this thesis is the definition of a real estate porject management model that allows the promotion of renovation projects of housing block. For this purpose, a study of real cases of successful renovation projects carried out in the region of Aragon, covering periods of economic crisis, evaluating the costs and planning of these actions. In this way, thanks to the research work on these cases, it has been possible to break down the actions carried out and group them with similar data that have allowed their comparison, classifying the actions in different types of housing blocks and some management models have been dictated, contemplating both the demolition and construction of new homes and the renovation of existing ones, increasing their buildability.
Also, through sensitivity analysis, both monovariable and multivariable using Python programming, the most viable models have been determined, after simulations of variations in income and expenditure of the project, similar to those occurring in times of economic crisis. The conclusion of this has been that the management models with increased building volumen are the most viable.
Based on these models, a management model has been proposed, generating a methodology that orders the entire renovation process, and makes it possible to know the most appropriate moment to carry out each action, who the agents involved are, and the documentation generated. This model advises the incorporation of management companies specialised in the sector, private or public, into the renovation process, because they manage to increase the number of houses renovated, meeting the objectives set by European regulations
Abstract:
Melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer and therefore has the highest mortality rate. It originates in the melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing skin pigment, when they start to grow uncontrollably. Melanoma presents several challenges in its diagnosis, even for professionals, due to its variability in appearance, similarity to benign lesions, and the subjectivity of visual evaluation.
All these difficulties highlight the need for innovative approaches and support tools to improve the accuracy and early detection of melanoma. These innovative approaches may involve the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, as combining the clinical expertise of professionals with computerized analysis of dermoscopic images can be a significant breakthrough in overcoming the challenges related to diagnosis and comprehensively improving patient care.
Fortunately, the current state of the art in artificial intelligence is incredibly favorable for solving problems of this nature, as there are already numerous tools available to develop solutions based on computer vision, image classification, and object detection.
Therefore, considering all the arguments mentioned above, the objective of the project will be to develop a system capable of classifying dermoscopic images of skin lesions. Artificial intelligence tools, specifically deep learning, convolutional neural networks, and transfer learning will be used for this purpose.
To address the problem, a research process is necessary, seeking to obtain a theoretical foundation not only in the technological and artificial intelligence fields but also in the healthcare domain to have a comprehensive understanding of the duality of the problem that the project aims to solve.
Once the necessary theoretical knowledge is acquired, a first approach to the problem can be considered, and from this point, the solution can be developed in its entirety. Firstly, it is necessary to define the dataset to be used. In this specific case, the dataset provided by ISIC in their 2019 challenge is used, from here on various data processing techniques are employed to adjust the data to the project needs.
As a solution to the problem posed in the project, the technique of transfer learning has been employed, whereby several pre-trained neural networks from the EfficientNets family have been utilized to perform a comparative analysis and strive to find the best possible performance.
Finally, after the training, validation, and testing processes, satisfactory results were obtained with all the networks used. However, the most promising results were achieved with EfficientNet V2 S
New developments in online diagnostics and protection of brushless synchronous machines
This thesis deals with the detection and protection of brushless synchronous machines. The detection and protection of brushless synchronous machines is tackled through two different approaches. On the one hand, a theoretical approach is developed, and other hand, an artificial intelligence-based approach is developed. Because the lack of available measurements makes the detection of electrical faults in the rotating elements of brushless synchronous machines particularly challenging, this thesis concentrates on these, but its developments can be extended to other faults and other fault locations.
The theoretical approach built upon the comparison between the theoretical and the measured exciter field currents. The theoretical exciter field current is computed from the main machine output magnitudes at any monitored operating point by means of a theoretical healthy machine model that links the main machine with the exciter. The theoretical principles and the healthy condition model have been verified. Afterwards, this estimation has been applied to detect interturn faults at the field winding of the main machine with different severity levels and rotating rectifier faults. This work has been carried out through computer simulations and through experimental tests.
The artificial intelligence-based approach is based on artificial neural networks algorithms, in order to predict the exciter field current in brushless synchronous machines from the machine output measurements, with the aim of detecting faults and protecting the machine. For this purpose, it is necessary the use of numerous healthy operational data to train the algorithm. Afterwards, the estimated excitation current is compared with the real measured excitation current. The type of fault, and given the case the severity level, are obtained from this comparison. The proposed algorithm has been built and assessed through experimental tests.
Both approaches represent novel and fast methods fault detection methods, which are characterized because they are online and non-intrusive, and also because their industrial application is straightforward as they are based on inputs that are regularly available in industry without requiring any additional equipment.
Additionally, two other developments are proposed and applies to some specific elements of brushless synchronous machines, located upstream (field winding of the exciter) and downstream (main machine stator) of the rotating elements.
On the one hand, although the provision of excitation power is a critical aspect to the operation of brushless synchronous machines, there is no extensive technical development in specific online diagnosis and protection methods for the exciter field winding. In this thesis, a temperature-based approach is proposed and applied, in order to provide protection to the field winding of the exciter, which can be extendable to any static winding fed with direct current. The proposed method is based on the comparison of the measured winding resistance and winding temperature, at each operating point, with a healthy condition temperature-resistance characteristic obtained beforehand. The applicability of the method has been verified through experimental tests.
On the other hand, it is a fact that stator ground fault protection functions for synchronous generators have usually a fixed setting for rated conditions. In case of variable speed and voltage operation, the protection does not cover all the operation range of the machine. In addition, unwanted tripping may occur due to incorrect filtering of the third harmonic. In this thesis, an auto-adaptative approach to the stator ground protection function is presented, specially conceived for the operation of synchronous machines at variable voltage and frequency. The applicability of the method has been verified through computer simulations and experimental tests
Data-driven monocular depth estimation with spherical panoramas
Three-dimensional (3D) computer vision is a fundamental backbone technology of autonomous vehicles, robots and the emerging reality technologies for interaction and presence. Spherical cameras are holistic images from a viewpoint perspective and as such, very well posed to perceive the world geometrically. Modern computer vision is driven by data and has managed to overcome barriers that were seemingly impossible, one of which is monocular geometric inference.
This thesis focuses on monocular geometric inference from a single spherical panorama, and particularly, 3D reconstructing indoor spaces. It applies spherical geometry and domain knowledge to improve the performance of modern data-driven technology. To achieve this, parallel contributions to the data availability and benchmarking challenges are made.
Chapters 2 and 3 study two spherical representations from a regression perspective, namely fine pixel-based image representations, and coarse spherical harmonic based ones. While the latter are more efficient, the former are more appropriate for convolutional models. The first method for self-supervised depth estimation is presented as well as a technique to regularize the harmonic basis prior and improve regression performance. Given the lack of spherical data, two opposing solutions are also explored, first the generation of multi-view, multi-modal data using explicit synthesis for learning 360o geometry, and second, the re-use of disjoint datasets for learning to estimate a scene’s environment map.
Chapters 4 and 5 turn to the geometry representations, studying coarse and dense model outputs, specifically room layout and depth respectively. A keypoint representation and regression approach is used for the former which results in the first end-to-end trainable method for 360o room layout. Further, in the latter, layout cues are integrated into a depth estimation model and boost its structural preservation performance. In addition, high-quality synthesis technology is used to improve the 360o dataset from a modality perspective, adding pixel-perfect semantic information and automatically processed weak layout cues.
Chapters 6 and 7 introduce a holistic benchmark for 360o depth estimation, with extra testing datasets aimed at modeling real-world distribution shifts and measuring performance across different axes. This marks the way forward from a practical point of view when models are deployed to be used in downstream tasks. It also opens up a new problem, which is the preservation of all performance traits, and the conflicting nature of smoothness and boundary preservation. A novel technique is presented to address this problem by relying on hybrid images, a perceptual dual image representation.

Given the global situation we face, hydrogen is presented as an important energy vector for the energy transition, due to its potential to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify (such as industry or heavy transport).
Faced with the immense expected demand for emission-free hydrogen in the medium and long term, technologies such as nuclear have to play a significant role in production, boosting research and promoting cost reduction.
In this way, this TFG shows the technical and economic competitiveness of nuclear hydrogen production compared to other technologies and presents different scenarios in accordanc
An Incompressible High-Order Solver with Thermal Coupling
This dissertation, framed within an Industrial Doctorate programme, has the twofold objective of improving the understanding of numerical properties and convergence acceleration techniques for High-Order methods, and to formulate an efficient incompressible flow solver for thermal applications.
The first part of this manuscript is devoted to the study of the linear multi-grid method applied to Flux Reconstruction, a relatively recent High-Order numerical method with close relations to the well-known Discontinuous Galerkin and Spectral Difference schemes. We do so by investigating the non-modal dissipation behaviour of the multi-grid scheme as a function of its parameters, in an effort to find the most efficient configurations. The analysis is extended to 2D high aspect-ratio cells, in the presence of dominating convection.
The second part of this manuscript introduces a High-Order incompressible flow solver devised by the simultaneous use of the Flux Reconstruction, the Discontinuous Galerkin and the Continuous Galerkin methods, each of which is known to offer increased computational efficiency for certain types of problems. On the one end of the spectrum, the Flux Reconstruction is an efficient algorithm for the explicit evaluation of fluxes in conservative form; on the other end, the Continuous Galerkin method is comparatively very efficient for the resolution of diffusion-dominated steady problems. The different formulations are put together in a fractional-step approach and validated against known test cases – unsteady Stokes and Taylor problems, lid-driven cavity, Taylor-Green vortex and thermally-driven cavity – with and without analytical solution, demonstrating convergence with mesh, time-step and polynomial refinement.
ABSTRACT
This research analyzes the impact of the professionalization of the architects' guild on the renewal of Quito's architectural culture between 1970-1990, in the context of the boom and bust of Ecuador's Oil Boom that began in 1972. To this end, it analyzes the trajectory of the “Colegio de Arquitectos del Ecuador de la Provincia de Pichincha” (CAE-P), Architects Association of Ecuador - Province of Pichincha, and the seven editions of the “Bienal de Arquitectura de Quito” (BAQ), Quito Architecture Biennial, held between 1978-1990. The thesis delves into the architectural culture by analyzing the interrelation between the institutionalization of the CAE-P and the emergence of professional practices and platforms for communication and confrontation of architectural ideas and productions. This historiographic understanding of Modern Architecture in Quito aims to shift the discussion away from morphological and genealogical aspects of individual objects and authors, towards the articulated discourses of institutional actors and collective practices that surrounded these architects and their productions.
The proposed analysis unveils the critical framework that the Quito architects' guild elaborated on the production of the 1970s-1980s, when the local architectural panorama was enriched by the exchange of ideas among Latin American institutions, critics, technicians, and bureaucrats. Moreover, this panorama was articulated through a series of architecture colloquia that proliferated in the last decades of the 20th century, encouraged by the political processes for returning to democracy in the region. While this approach represents an official discourse produced by an intellectual elite within the professional sphere, the one form the Architects Association of Ecuador, it could potentially frame a starting point for reevaluating the cultural meanings that the productions from the Oil Boom might have experienced within a contemporary social and temporal context
Condiciones para el compromiso organizativo en el contexto de la innovación social digital = Understanding the organisational commitment in the context of digital social innovation
When asked about the future that the present technological revolution holds for mankind, Professor Arsuaga recalls a quote attributed to Mark Twain: "History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes". The professor comments that the mastery of fire, Prometheus' gift, the Neolithic revolution, the domestication of the horse 4000 years ago which was the beginning of communication and transport networks, and the industrial revolution have marked milestones in the history of humanity, as they have made the rise of civilisations possible. The impact of each revolution has been far-reaching, both for the planet and for our delusional species. The seminal studies of Professor Jasanoff highlight the importance of the scale of the impact of the convergence of different technologies. Inherent in the current revolution, the convergence and the acceleration of change that this impact brings affect all social, political, environmental and organisational levels. The study of innovation in the current technological revolution raises convergences and divergences between technological progress, change and social arrangement.
Although there is previous research in the field of innovation, considerably less academic attention was paid to social innovation. This type of innovation, which seeks new ways to address the challenges unleashed by market failures, requires research to help projects and initiatives develop their own strategies. The success of the initiatives requires strategies be geared towards retaining those actors who have committed themselves to the organisation.
This study breaks with the traditional longitudinal research focus on the problems that arise in the short-term relationships that for-profit organisations establish with their practitioners. Based on a combination of theories of organisational commitment and theories of motivation (exchange theory, psychological contract theory and Herzberg's two-factor theory) it explains why organisational commitment arises in professionals operating in the context of digital social innovation, one of the phenomena emerging in the current technological era.
The conceptual framework reconstructs the causal chain of events involved in the motivational process in which professionals who develop and drive a specific type of digital social innovation are immersed. Committed to their social sphere, these key actors use technology and the "open" philosophy to address market failures and achieve the social change that their initiatives pursue.
This research adopts a mixed methodology, with a critical realist philosophical approach, to investigate the hypothetical antecedents of organisational commitment represented in the motivational process. Through LinkedIn, two campaigns were conducted to locate those paid professionals involved in DSI organisations. Out of 110 participants contacted, 32 individuals responded to the survey in the first campaign. In the second campaign, the sample collected amounted to 56 completed questionnaires. This final sample represents 31 of the 101 projects developed in Spain at the time of data collection.
The analysis has allowed the estimation of models, through the fsQCA methodology, that relate the propositions that provide answers to the efficient cause. The results indicate that the necessary and sufficient conditions for high commitment are of an intrinsic nature, with the responsibility allocated to the professional being the key condition in all the analyses carried out.
The practical implications suggest that the ways of prolonging the exchange relationship established between the parties should be based on the satisfaction of the key intrinsic conditions, modifying the work environment and the design of the profiles involved in the organisational structure in such a way as to maximise this satisfaction. The selection process must be aimed at incorporating and maintaining these committed professionals because they are eager to develop their skills and virtues.
ABSTRACT
The following TFG is part of the Spanish State Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation Plan AgrosceNa-UP (PID2019-107972RB-I00) and the European Agrogreen-SUDOE Project (https://agrogreensudoe.org/). The field tests for these research projects are located at the facilities of the National Irrigation Technology Center (MAPA), Madrid.
Within the AgrosceNa-UP project, the experimental study focuses on exploring possible synergies between adaptation and mitigation to climate change and fertilization management of a non-irrigated barley crop under a Mediterranean climate.
The trial is carried out for the RGT Planet barley variety in 2 annual cycles, the first from 2021 to 2022 and the second from 2022 to 2023. Field sampling activities, laboratory analysis (pedological and phenological) and analysis and discussion of results only for the first of said cycles (2021 – 2022), and with a focus on emissions of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), have been carried out for this TFG.
As a measure of adaptation to climate change, two different sowing dates were established for each crop cycle, spaced between them for a period of approximately 2 months, with the first sowing (S1) being November 12, 2021 and the second sowing (S2) on January 19, 2022. This strategy resulted from a co-creation workshop carried out with farmers within the framework of the AgrosceNa-UP project.
As a mitigation measure for N2O emissions, three different nitrogen fertilization treatments were implemented, in accordance with the objective included in the European Farm to Fork Strategy of reducing the use of fertilizers by at least 20% from now on to 2030, and to comply with the RD on sustainable nutrition in agricultural soils, which establishes minimum good agricultural practices.
An unfertilized Control was established and three replicates were set for each of the treatments (including the control), which meant a total of 12 experimental plots for each sowing, that is, the equivalent of 24 plots for each cycle. In each plot, gas samples were taken using manual cameras for the determination of N2O; plus soil samples (0-10 cm) for the determination of soil moisture and
ammonium and nitrate content in soil. After harvest, biomass determinations were made to calculate harvest yields.
Fertilization rates are low, but adjusted to the crop and the conclusions of the co-creation activity. The results determined low N2O fluxes for the study period, associated with soil humidity values always lower than 60% and low temperatures during the first five months of the test. Therefore, crops, conditions and management are suitable for emissions mitigation in Mediterranean cropping systems.
The low yields of the second sowing conclude that, at least for the Planet variety and similar edaphoclimatic and management conditions, long cycle crop is more appropriate. On one hand, as long as the fractionation is maintained in three applications, the fertilization dose can be reduced without compromising final yield, which implies economic savings to be considered. On the other hand, at high fertilization doses, making a third fractionation of the dose does not present any differences, especially considering labor and machinery costs. In general, having a long growing cycle stabilizes most of the parameters studied, so it is the most convenient option as long as climatic conditions allow it
Morph-KGC: Scalable knowledge graph materialization with mapping partitions
Knowledge graphs are often constructed from heterogeneous data sources, using declarative rules that map them to a target ontology and materializing them into RDF. When these data sources are large, the materialization of the entire knowledge graph may be computationally expensive and not suitable for those cases where a rapid materialization is required. In this work, we propose an approach to overcome this limitation, based on the novel concept of mapping partitions. Mapping partitions are defined as groups of mapping rules that generate disjoint subsets of the knowledge graph. Each of these groups can be processed separately, reducing the total amount of memory and execution time required by the materialization process. We have included this optimization in our materialization engine Morph-KGC, and we have evaluated it over three different benchmarks. Our experimental results show that, compared with state-of-the-art techniques, the use of mapping partitions in Morph-KGC presents the following advantages: (i) it decreases significantly the time required for materialization, (ii) it reduces the maximum peak of memory used, and (iii) it scales to data sizes that other engines are not capable of processing currently
