Abstract: One of the most vital resources in modern society is the energy that powers the different technologies that are part of human’s daily life. The generation of such a vital resource is a major concern what has caused the rise of many different projects trying to set the bases for the future way of obtaining energy. One of these projects is the ITER project, which main goal is to demonstrate the viability of nuclear fusion as a way of obtaining energy. The ITER project will contain a significant number of different systems that will cooperate to make the nuclear plant operative. Nevertheless, in a project of such scale it is vital the presence of a system responsible of monitoring all the different systems integrating the nuclear plant and in that is able actuate in case it detects any risk to the machines, in ITER this system is known as Interlock Control System (ICS). The ICS consists of various subsystems, that are divided according to the architecture used by the subsystems in slow architectures, based in Programable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and fast architectures, based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The latter are implemented in National Instruments (NI) CompactRIO chassis, which are programmed in the graphical programming environment, Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) in conjunction with an addon that allows to use this environment with FPGAs, LabVIEW FPGA module. The LabVIEW FPGA module offers some significant benefits in comparison to other alternatives such as Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) when configuring an FPGA. However, the main advantage is that it allows developers to implement application in FPGAs without requiring the enormous effort it requires to build an application in VHDL as LabVIEW offers an abstraction level above VHDL. With the use of the LabVIEW environment and the module that enables the use of FPGAs in this environment, many systems of the ICS have been developed by ITER. One of these developed systems is a Manchester Code (MC) encoder, that will be used for the communications stablished between the different CompactRIO chassis integrating the ICS. However, this MC encoder requires to be tested in order to check that it fulfils the initial specifications the ITER Organisation stated. One of the objectives of this project is to verify that the MC encoder supplied by ITER fulfils the initial specifications stablished by them. Additionally, this project aims to develop and test a MC decoder compatible with the MC encoder supplied by ITER, that will enable an easier and deeper test procedure for the MC encoder. Finally, in this project it will be performed a review of the possible safety issues that the MC communication created can present according to the safety guidelines supplied by ITER. After performing all the tasks related with the project it was verified that the MC encoder fulfilled the majority of the initial specifications stablished by ITER, with some exceptions such as not achieving a range of values due to the data type or implementing the codification in a different way. Moreover, a MC decoder was developed, and it was compatible with the MC encoder supplied except for consecutive MC transaction, however, this aspect can be easily solved with a slight modification in a waiting time of the MC encoder. Finally, the possible safety issues were reviewed, and it was checked that except for some specific cases, that would require a deeper analysis than the one stablished for this project, the majority of safety issues implied no risk

Abstract: The unstoppable growth that photovoltaic solar energy is experiencing worldwide, both as a clean and renewable alternative energy, encourages the continuous improvement of the technology and its potential applications. The Instituto de Energía Solar (IES) and its various internal research groups have always been pioneers in this scientific field. Today, they continue to innovate and explore new opportunities that aim to entice companies and organizations to invest in this medium. Instruments and Systems Integration (ISI) is one of IES’s departments, whose activity is primarily focused on the development of optical and electronic instrumentation for photovoltaics. They are responsible for building the solar simulators available at the center, which help characterize panels without depending on outdoor environmental conditions. Solar simulators aim to replicate the real working conditions for an outdoor photovoltaic (PV) module. This involves several constraints such as, for example, that the light hitting the panel's surface should do it uniformly and with optical properties similar to sunbeams after penetrating the atmosphere. A solar simulator is essentially integrated by three types of instruments: one or more lamps, mirrors and/or lenses, and an IV (Intensity – Voltage) curve tracer. Depending on the type of lamp that is used, solar simulators can be classified into two main groups: • Steady-state simulators: Their light source never goes off during measurement procedure. • Flash simulators: A flash lamp used for lighting the panels. On this project the attention will be focused on the flash simulators. These kinds of simulators allow us to perform IV curve measurements using two different techniques: first, the single flash, where the whole curve is swept with one flash shot, and the multi flash, where with each shot an IV data point is acquired. Both measurement procedures have their strengths and weaknesses. Their main problem is that no mattering what technique is used, the results that are achieved do not always reflect reality. This happens because of the physical behavior that PV modules react to when they are forced to change working conditions fast. It is a completely different behavior from the one they demonstrate under natural sunlight. Solar cells are made up of PN junctions. This implies that, as it happens on diodes, a capacitive effect among their terminals is noticeable. This phenomenon is responsible for the transient behavior solar panels have during flash measurements, messing with the acquired I-V data. There are several potential solutions that could bring PV modules closer to a “quasi-stationary” working state. In a multi flash measurement, for example, keeping a Vbias as constant as possible across the panel terminals during each light pulse would undoubtedly improve the results. IV tracers are electronic devices consisting of an electronic load and a control and measurement instrumentation. Along with the data acquisition system (DAQ), it plans IV curve sweeps. The electronic load is the device responsible for biasing the PV module to the desired Vbias. Based on IES's experience, electronic loads typically do not perform well enough to suppress a panel’s transients during measurements. This is why this project is undertaken. The goal is to design an electronic load, with properties that could help setting a constant Vbias on the PV module, and incorporate the equipment into an IV curve tracer to test the multi flash technique on a solar simulator. Modifying a measurement card, integrating all hardware equipment (National Instruments (NI) DAQ, electronic load, measurement card, flash power pack and power supply board), and developing two applications within the LabVIEW environment for tracer and simulator control were additional tasks developed to reach the target. Upon finishing the project, it is concluded that the proposed load is optimal for the application, pending further testing with other cell technologies and higher I conditions. The next steps would involve launching an updated version of the prototype and fully mechanizing the equipment (load + power supply + measurement card)

Production systems with parallel heterogeneous servers of limited capacity: accurate modeling and performance analysis

    No full text
Heterogeneous systems of limited capacity have general applications in manufacturing, but also in logistic or service systems due to the differences in server or workstation performance or work assignment; this is in close relationship with system flexibility, where saturation and blocking are ordinary situations of systems with high demand and limited capacity, and thus, accurate loss quantification is essential for performance evaluation. Multi-class systems of limited capacity have been studied much less than parallel homogeneous systems (Erlang models). In this context, accurate models for parallel heterogeneous ordered-entry systems were developed: without any prior queue, i.e., M/Mi/c/c, and with a k-capacity queue, i.e., M/Mi/c/c + k. These new matrix models gave an exact state formulation, and their accuracy was verified using discrete event simulation and comparison with literature results. Also, the effect of the queue capacity was studied in relationship to the pattern of service rates. Next, the heterogeneous recirculating system model was also developed with good approximation results. Finally, the proposed models were applied to evaluate systems with non-exponential service times using a new hybrid methodology by combining the Markovian model and the Monte Carlo method (MCM) for normal or lognormal service times, which also yielded useful good approximations to the simulated system

Abstract: The main objective of this BSc Thesis is to develop able-to-be simulated HDL model of processors with RISC-V ISA. To achieve this goal, the VHDL language will be used to model various royalty-free RISC-V architectures, including RISCV32I, RISCV32C, and RISCV64I. The implementation of these architectures will be carried out in a simulation environment to ensure that their operation is correct and compliant with RISC-V standards. Firstly, architectures with a 5-stage pipeline (fetch-decode-execute-memory-writeback) will be modeled. Test benches will be used to perform tests and validations to ensure that each stage of the pipeline works correctly. Once all the stages have been verified, they will be joined to form the complete pipeline and verify its overall operation. Subsequently, C code programs will be developed to test the performance of the architectures. These programs will be cross-compiled for RISC-V architectures using a toolchain, and the compiled files will be processed to generate a able to be simulated memory. This able-to-be simulated memory will be used to execute programs written in high-level language and verify their correct operation in RISC-V architectures. In summary, this BSc Thesis aims to develop able-to-be simulated HDL model of processors with RISC-V ISA using the VHDL language. The correct operation of the architectures will be verified by implementing and validating the 5-stage pipeline and developing C code programs to evaluate their performance. This work is expected to contribute to the development of open-source RISC-V processors and promote their adoption in the industry

ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to analyze the mechanical properties of Robinia pseudoacacia L., Platanus x hybrida Brot., Ulmus pumila L. and Populus alba L. Estimated using ultrasound wave equipment (USLab y Sylvatest Duo) and stress wave equipment (Microsecond Timer) on standing trees, felled logs and on specimens obtained from different parts of the trees. Bending strength, axial compression strength and tension parallel to grain were determined for each specimen in order to subsequently correlate the strength and stiffness with the acoustic properties determined in the standing tree. The bending strength values found for Robinia pseudoacacia L. were 72,0 MPa, 61,4 MPa in the case of Platanus x hybrida Brot., Ulmus pumila L. 42,2 MPa and Populus alba L. 46,5 MPa. The static modulus of elasticity was 5711,8 MPa in Robinia pseudoacacia L., 4671,1 MPa in Platanus x hybrida Brot., 3421 MPa in Ulmus pumila L. and 4747 MPa in Populus alba L. For the relationship between the static modulus of elasticity of the specimens and the dynamic modulus of elasticity determined in standing trees using the USLab, coefficients of determination were found to be between 0,30-0,92, between 0,52-0,80 using the Sylvatest Duo and 0,60-0,94 with the Microsecond Timer. With the present work, it is a matter of developing a methodology that allows obtaining estimators of the physical and mechanical properties of the wood of standing trees from nondestructive variables to make more accurate diagnoses of the biomechanics of the specimens, therefore, it was not a question of characterizing the species but of developing and contrasting the methodology

Modeling and characterization of GaAs multijunction photovoltaic laser power converters

A. ABSTRACT The systems for transmitting power optically using monochromatic light through optical fibers, known as Power-by-light (PBL) or Power-over-Fiber, have attracted significant interest in recent years. This interest arises from their ability to safely monitor and control processes in hazardous areas where the risk of explosion and fire is high (such as refineries, mines, fuel tanks in space and aircraft) or where galvanic isolation is required, as in high-voltage power lines and medical applications. PBL systems consist of three fundamental elements: the PhotoVoltaic Laser Power Converter (PVLPC), located in the hazardous area; a monochromatic light source situated in a safe region, typically a laser; and an optical fiber through which the light travels to reach the exclusion zone. The PVLPC is the most crucial element for converting optical power into electricity and is the primary focus of research in this thesis. This work concentrates on GaAs-based PVLPCs designed to operate in the wavelength range of 800 to 870 nm, which falls within the first transmission window of optical fibers. Our goal is to achieve an efficiency close to 65%. To do this, it is necessary to delve into certain issues inherent to the device, such as carrier thermalization when using wavelengths far from the bandgap energy of the material and current mismatch between subcells in multijunction devices, which is inevitable due to variations in the thickness of the absorptive layers during the epitaxial structure manufacturing process using MOVPE. On the other hand, the primary external factor that degrades the efficiency of the laser power converter and is present in practical PBL systems is the non-uniformity of laser light incident on the device from the fiber. We study how to improve device performance under non-uniform light through: a) proper design of the front grid, b) improving tunnel junctions in terms of reduced series resistance and increased peak current, and c) optimizing the distance between the fiber and the device to allow optimal operation, increasing the fill factor, open circuit voltage, output power, and consequently, efficiency, by varying the degree of non-uniformity of light on the device as it is more or less exposed to the protruding fiber profile, even if incident power is reduced. Finally, the simulations generated in this thesis have supported the optimization of devices manufactured within the III-V Semiconductors group, and a characterization method has been developed to determine their efficiency, following standards for III-V concentration solar cells. This involves a uniform light profile, a fixed device temperature of 25C, and precise determination of input power using a reference converter. These three aspects are crucial for maximizing the efficiency of the laser power converter, with the precise measurement of incident power on the device being the main source of uncertainty in efficiency calculations. Therefore, the method for obtaining input power is detailed in depth. As an overall result of this thesis, a group of three-subcell PVLPCs with efficiencies exceeding 60% has been achieved, including a maximum efficiency of 66.5 % at an irradiance of 32 W/cm2, resulting in a generated power of 1.92 W, an open circuit voltage of 3.681 V, and a short circuit current of 0.590 A

ABSTRACT Nowadays, there is a great growth in the craft beer sector. In fact, data indicate that in Spain in the year 2020 up to 3,856 different beers were produced and it is estimated that there are up to 9 different types of beer in each brewery. In addition, it should be noted that, as a result of the craft beer brewing initiative, the curiosity to taste and discover and flavors and aromas is being awakened. There is an increase in the use of non-Saccharomyces yeasts in alcoholic beverages due to the benefits they can offer, for example, the improvement of flavor and aroma, as well as their use in the production of beers with low ethanol content associated with a low-calorie beverage. This study shows that the use of Metschnikowia pulcherrima yeast strains to brew craft beer achieves sensory changes in beer, significantly modifying volatile compounds and reducing the ethanol content, obtaining values below 1% v/v of ethanol. To do so, different instrumental and sensory analyses were conducted. Several fermentations were carried out with Metschnikowia pulcherrima (strains M29 and M346 were used) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In addition, two sequential fermentations were carried out to determine the behavior of Metschnikowia pulcherrima with Saccharomyces cerevisiae with the inoculation of the latter on the seventh day of fermentation. It was observed that the more alcoholic beers experienced a decrease in bitterness due to the interaction between ethanol and hop acids. Color values (EBC) varied significantly among beers, obtaining lighter beers in sequential fermentations with S. cerevisiae yeast. It was determined that 2-phenylethyl acetate, related to honey and apple aromas, was in high proportions in the beer fermented with Metschnikowia pulcherrima, specifically strain 29, indicating that it has a greater capacity to contribute honey aromas to the beer and improve the aromatic quality. Metschnikowia pulcherrima is a yeast incapable of fermenting maltose and maltotriose leading to high concentrations of these sugars resulting in very sweet beers which reduces consumer acceptance. Experimentation and optimization with different yeasts are necessary to obtain a beer with the desired sensory profile and quality

Abstract: The project “Collection and processing of power measurements in mobile phone networks with unmanned aerial vehicles” is part of the GALENCODER [1] proposal, selected among the 30 bests in the MyGalileoSolution [2] competition. It is one of the possible operating scenarios for GALENCODER to take measurements of 4G/3G signal power in different non-conventional terrain, proposing the use of drones with signal receivers to take measurements. For the development of the project, it has been necessary to assemble a drone and incorporate the reception system for the subsequent processing of the data obtained. Open-Source parts and tools have been prioritized for both the hardware and the software applied. Due to the nature of the project and the time frame of the pandemic suffered in recent years, different providers have had to be chosen, prioritizing the terms and means available. During development, "agile" work methodologies such as SCRUM have been implemented to be able to carry out incremental and iterative works. In this way, different levels of improvements and changes have been implemented in the project during its different phases. It has been possible to obtain data from different network operators and compare them with data offered by the companies themselves. The development has meant that the system can be modified with small changes to obtain measurements of other signals and to be able to visualize and/or analyze said data with the same interface and motorization system

Abstract: In this Bachelor's Degree Final Project, a machine learning application is developed to predict user influx in the main streets of Madrid. To achieve this, various data such as holidays, weather, and football matches are considered, which are used as input variables in the machine learning algorithms. A comparative analysis of different machine learning algorithms is performed, including Linear Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forests, and Gradient Boosting. These algorithms are applied to the available data to determine which one provides the best predictions of user influx in the main streets. The performance of each algorithm is evaluated using several evaluation metrics, including Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Coefficient of Determination. Additionally, automatic data downloading, and transformation are carried out to prepare the data for analysis. Optimization techniques are implemented to improve the program's efficiency. The project also includes data visualization, which allows presenting the results in a clear and understandable manner. To make the application more user-friendly, a web interface is developed using the Flask framework. This interface enables users to interact with the application intuitively, providing the capability to make queries, visualize results, and obtain real-time predictions of user influx
