Given that an increasing number of people is living in urban areas, it is of great importance to find ways towards a more sustainable environment in the cities. This is also reflected in the fact that the demand for vegetation mats with Sedum spp. for green roofs constantly increases. The company Veg Tech AB cultivates such vegetation mats for the Nordic market. To be able to meet the increased demand and to minimize their nutrient losses, they wish to optimize their fertilization management for an efficient production. This project aims to investigate the nutrient status in the Sedum-cultures under current fertilization practises and to map the changes in nutrient concentrations and nutrient content in the vegetation mats during the growing season, after fertilization and after removal of cuttings used for propagation. Currently, the fertilization is done with NPK 11-5-18 and N27 alternately. Sampling for plant tissues analyses, plant sap analyses and analyses of the substrate in the cultures was carried out at four occasions in three different places. Fresh weight as well as dry weigth was also determined. While the most abundant species in the vegetation mats, Sedum album, was analyzed every time, the study was complemented by analyses of Phedimus spurius at one occasion. A literature study of the subject has also been performed and the results of the different analyses have been compared to data from the few existing studies within this field.
Very few studies of the nutrient demand during production stage have previously been performed. The recommendations in the literature is most often valid for installed roofs and ranges from 6,5 to 20 g N/m2 and year. During this project, 9,8 g N/m2 have been applied, which seems reasonable, with regard to the recommendations in the literature. To reduce weed problems and to minimize the risk of leakages, a reduced dose of N27 is suggested. When it comes to P, K, Mg and Zn, the concentrations in the plant tissues were lower than previously reported in other studies. pH was comparatively high in all places, a reduction could contribute to increased levels of plant-available P, for example. It could also enhance the occurrence of P. spurius and other species within the genus Phedimus, that is currently sparsley present in the mats. A reduction of the lime content in the substrate could, in addition to a lower pH, lead to an increased uptake of Mg, since the Ca/Mg-ratio in the substrate over all was very high. In order to minimize the risk of leakages, a shift towards controlled release fertilizers (CRF) could be an option.
The results of the plant sap analyses revealed a clear positive correlation between the concentrations of NO3- and K+ in the sap and N and K in the tissues. This means that Veg Tech can perform simple plant sap analyses of their own to quickly get a picture of the status in the fields. This could be a valuable tool in their continuous work with mapping the nutrient situation in the Sedum-mats and to develop an optimal fertilization plan
Effects of moose (Alces alces) browsing on naturally regenerated deciduous trees and field layer in Swedish pine stands
National and international forest biodiversity goals are not being met in Sweden, with 67% of productive forest area covered in even-aged monoculture coniferous forest stands. To diversify the forest management in order to increase, among other things, biodiversity in these stands, using natural deciduous regeneration can help in creating more mixed stands. Ungulate browsing can affect survival of this regeneration and possibly limit which trees forestry can select for. This thesis aimed to study the effects of ungulate browsing on the natural deciduous regeneration and field layer in young planted Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands. This was done by comparing data from exclosure plots with unfenced plots, spanning a large part of the latitudinal range of Sweden. GLMM analyses showed that browsing affect the number of established (>2.5 m height) trees and the amount of deciduous forage biomass of the species silver birch Betula pendula, downy birch Betula pubescens, rowan Sorbus aucuparia, aspen Populus tremula and Salix spp. The abundance of RAS (i.e. rowan, aspen and Salix spp.) was low, even inside of the exclosures, which points out that regeneration of RAS is low even when browsers are excluded and thus other factors are also affecting abundance of RAS regeneration. The species composition as depicted by NMDS ordination and the Shannon diversity of different plots did not differ significantly, but did show patterns of more variation in species composition and diversity in the browsed plots.
These results imply that management of browsed stands is less predictable than that of unbrowsed stands and thus delaying precommerical thinning could provide management with a clearer idea of which trees could be selected as main stems in the mixed stand. Further research efforts should focus on disentangling different factors affecting deciduous tree regeneration
Active front spaces : the urban interface between building and street
This master’s thesis in landscape architecture explores the transition zone between buildings and streets and its potential contribution to sustainable urban development. Focusing on human scale, ecological values, and social interaction, the thesis investigates and presents a concept for ‘active front spaces’ (aktiva förgårdsrum) aimed at integrating architecture, urban ecology, and urban planning.
The concept is based on urban ecological principles and urban morphological insights to create multifunctional spaces that promote social activity. climate adaption and biodiversity. By utilizing nature-based solutions such as rain gardens, green facades, and permeable materials, the concept addresses climate challenges like stormwater management and biodiversity loss. The thesis emphasizes the importance of a holistic perspective, where the spatial interface between buildings and streets harmonizes architectural, functional, social, and ecological aspects.
The thesis combines theory and practice through a pragmatic Research Through Design methodology. Literature studies and dialogues with experts, together with the author’s 15 years of experience as an architect, form the foundation for the thesis’s research and concept development.
Special focus is placed on Swedish existing urban planning tools, such as ‘active ground floors’ (aktiva/levande bottenvåningar) and ‘front yard zones’ (förgårdsmark) and how these can be further developed to incorporate nature-based solutions.
The discussion highlights both opportunities and challenges associated with the study and the developed concept. Nature-based solutions require long-term management and adaptation to local conditions. At the same time, socioeco-nomic factors may create inequalities, known as ‘green gentrification,’ if justice perspectives are not integrated. The thesis concludes with a call for interdisciplinary collaboration and future research to further develop the concept of ‘active front spaces.’
The definition of ‘active front spaces’ emphasizes its role as a transitional zone that integrates social interaction, ecosystem services, and architectural design. The concept aims to be a valuable contribution to sustainable urban planning in both existing and new urban environments, offering practical tools to address contemporary challenges of climate change and urbanization
This study investigates how three Swedish municipalities work with greenery in schoolyards at a time when climate change is leaving deeper marks. The average temperature of the world is increasing rapidly and it's affecting the entire world's population. Cities are becoming densely populated, more people need to share smaller spaces. The green spaces are decreasing in favor of paved surfaces. Statistics show that children's needs for larger green outdoor environments are being downgraded, including their schoolyards.
The effects of climate change result in more intense heatwaves, which poses health risks to child-ren, both due to increased UV radiation and heatstress. Since children must spend a third of their school time in the schoolyard according to Swedish law, it is important that these outdoor environ-ments are managed and designed with the children's well-being in mind. Schoolyards have great value for children, as they are often the only time during the day when they are in a green environ-ment. The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket) has developed guidelines with general advice, as a complement to the Planning and Building Act, regarding the size of the open space that children should have in the schoolyard for play, recreation, physical activity and outdoor education.
The purpose of this study is to examine the work of three Swedish municipalities with greenery in schoolyards and how they interpret the recommendations from Boverket. The selected municipalities are the municipality of Helsingborg, the municipality of Jönköping and the municipality of Lund. The research questions were answered through a literature review and a multiple case study that includes a questionnaire and document studies. The literature review explored laws, regulations and advice that municipalities must consider in relation to climate adaptation in design and management, as well as the impact of greenery on children and how greenery plays a key role in the efforts for climate adaptation. By comparing the different municipalities' working methods in a case study, a deeper understanding is gained of how schoolyards should be designed and managed with children's well-being and safety in mind for the future.
The results show that there are many laws, regional and local actionprograms and conventions on climate adaptation, and that the municipalities organizational structures operate within political frameworks. This affects the work with schoolyards, where there are no statutory standards for de-sign, only general advice and recommendations. Based on the study, conclusions could be drawn that cross-departmental collaboration is crucial for working with schoolyards within a municipal organization. Given the increasing climate change, a strategic climate approach could be strengthened by implementing a statutory requirement for open spaces and greenery in schoolyards.

Estudi exploratori d’Una infrastructura verda i blava rehabilitadora i resilient a la calor : cas d’estudi: Lleida, Catalunya, Espanya
As heat waves intensify, posing significant threats to human health, ecological integrity, and overall urban resilience, city living becomes increasingly challenging. High levels of impervious surfaces exacerbate temperature extremes, while the loss of biodiversity diminishes natural cooling capacities. Recent European restoration policies emphasise the urgent need to create healthier environments for both people and ecosystems, offering a strategic opportunity to integrate ecological rehabilitation into urban heat mitigation efforts. This research investigates the role of landscape architecture in addressing urban heat stress through innovative design and planning strategies that simultaneously enhance resilience and restore novel ecosystems.
This study employs a multi-method approach to explore the intersections of urban heat mitigation, ecological restoration, and landscape planning. The medium-sized city of Lleida, located in northeastern Spain, serves as the case study due to its semi-arid, continental climate and extensive rural-urban interface. The analysis combines geospatial data from Landsat-8 to generate a land surface temperature [LST] heat map with on-site explorations and localised assessments of cooling island compositions. The ESTER 2.0 tool is used to evaluate ecosystem services and compare patch compositions, contributing valuable insights into effective urban cooling strategies.
Findings reveal significant temperature variations of up to 13°C across the urban fabric, with tree-covered areas demonstrating the most pronounced cooling effects. In contrast, industrial zones, abandoned plots, and agricultural fields emerge as critical heat sources. The study underscores the importance of water availability, topography, and landform configurations in facilitating cooling mechanisms such as evapotranspiration and airflow. Jack Ahern’s (2011) resilience framework is applied to propose a heat-resilient network that aligns with geomorphological structures, promoting strategic connectivity between existing and rehabilitated green-blue infrastructures. Multiscalar, modular interventions — integrating tree-dominated systems, wind corridors, and sustainable water management — are identified as essential for mitigating urban heat while enhancing ecosystem functionality. However, knowledge gaps persist concerning the characterisation of referent habitat for rehabilitative practices and the potential role of xeric landscapes in urban heat resilience, necessitating further investigation research.
This research highlights the critical role of landscape planning and design in mitigating heat stress and fostering urban resilience. To address the increasing frequency of extreme heat events, planners and designers must adopt a holistic, multi-scalar approach that integrates ecological restoration with adaptive urban strategies. Collaborative efforts between policymakers, ecologists, and local communities are essential to developing sustainable, site-responsive interventions that reduce heat stress and contribute to the long-term ecological and social health of urban environments

Samtidigt visar undersökningen att tjänstepersonerna behöver förhålla sigIn urban planning citizen involvement is often described as a means of strengthening democracy. However, previous research allows for questioning the conditions under which citizen involvement can truly contribute to democratic strengthening within planning. This thesis aims to create a deeper understanding of the conditions for democracy-enhancing citizen involvement within urban planning through a case study of the planning program for västra Flensburg in Malmö. The study consists of a document and interview analysis examining the ability of civil servants to manage the citizen involvement carried out in the planning program. These conditions are further analyzed using concepts from deliberative democracy and agonistic pluralism, in order to be understood from a democratic theoretical perspective. The study shows that the City of Malmö offers conditions for conducting democracy-strengthening citizen involvement, as evidenced by a demonstrated aspiration toward communicative planning ideals. At the same time, the study reveals that civil servants must respond to overarching aspects of the planning process, which has made it difficult to prioritize citizen involvement. This, in turn, points to challenges in implementing and managing democracy-enhanzing citizen involvement within the planning process. Based on the case and the applied theoretical perspectives, the study identifies tendencies toward a conflict between the logics of the planning process and the logics of democracy
Narratives of water
Water in the landscape is and has been an integral part of life in the Netherlands. Its management goes back to the year 800 when people started to build dikes to protect themselves and the country from the water. Since then, water management policies have been evolving into technological constructions, thereby creating an identity for the Dutch people as masters over water. However, the current trend shows that policies are moving towards nature-inclusive measures and views on nature are changing towards stewardship instead of mastery.
This study uncovers relationships of people to water in the landscape in the Netherlands and explores how people relate to this change in policies and views on nature. The relationships are constituted by social and ecological factors that were studied by listening to stories and walking through the landscape where these stories were located. Collecting and combining similar stories led to the identification of six narratives reflecting human-water relationships that were analyzed using cultural narrative analysis.
The Dutch identity of mastery over nature is still present in stories that people tell. It is connected to the question of responsibility of the water management. Participants saw a role for the State to protect citizens from floods and other water disasters. Individual experiences were mainly related to light, happy memories with the water that was close by. The stories showed also a high level of reflection from participants during the interviews. The social-ecological approach was beneficial for understanding the stories and their context better, as well as enhancing reflexivity of the researcher.
The narratives show how human-water relationships are closely related to concepts of agency and collectivity, where collective memory of water disasters contributes to the idea of the Dutch as both victims and heroes that conquer the water. Stewardship of water is limited to drinking water and water scarcity, but citizen science research provides examples of how community-based natural resource management can enhance the stewardship of nature. Applying this in the Netherlands could help increase awareness of and care for water in the landscape
Landskapsarkitekters estetiska arbete
Aesthetics is one of the foundational competencies of landscape architects but it is also a topic which can be hard to discuss. Using epistemology and aesthetic theory this thesis explores how the landscape architects worked with aesthetics in the project Stora torg in Eslöv. The purpose is to articulate the knowledge in how landscape architects work with aesthetic issues to contribute to a deeper understanding of this foundational competency for landscape architects. This was done by examining how the landscape architects worked with aesthetics during the different phases of the project Stora torg in Eslöv.
To answer this question a background on aesthetics was introduced to understand what it is that the landscape architects worked with, as well as a background on epistemology in order to understand the competency in and of itself. From this theoretical foundation the case was examined through document study and qualitative interviews.
The result is presented as an analysis of the material where the conclusions in short are that aesthetics were used in the project as (i) goals, as (ii) means and as (iii) motivations. The analysis shows that the work with aesthetic issues differed during the project: During the preparatory phase the landscape architects used their aesthetic knowledge as an argument in order to be allowed to compete. During the competition phase they worked with their knowledge of the relationship between non-aesthetic and aesthetic properties, by using wicked questions which integrated aesthetic aspects with other aspects. During the investigative phase the landscape architects worked with visualizing tacit knowledge regarding aesthetic properties in order to facilitate discussions and decision. Finally, during the final phase, when building plans were produced, the competition entry was used as a common ground to relate details to the whole in order to preserve visions regarding the aesthetic.
This thesis shows how work with aesthetics was integrated with other aspects of the work, therefore an understanding of the work of landscape architects would have to take aesthetics into consideration. In addition, the thesis shows how the landscape architects used aesthetic means in order to achieve social, interpersonal values and in doing so, the work with aesthetics is tied to immeasurable values (omätbara värden) and posited as a way of nuancing the limiting understandings of knowledge
Hållbara affärsmodeller för kooperativa NTFP verksamheter i Kenya
In Kenya, community-based enterprises built around non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are crucial for enhancing rural livelihoods and encouraging sustainable resource management. While NTFPs has received attention in research, little is known about the underlying business models that underpin these local NTFP enterprises and how they relate to sustainability. This study investigates the operations of two community-based NTFP groups in Kenya, focusing on tamarind and apiculture, their perceptions of their business models, and the sustainability implications of their enterprises. An explorative qualitative abductive approach inspired by participatory research was employed, involving local participants in both data collection and analysis. Focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with both groups, followed by joint co-analysis sessions. The sustainable business model (SBM) framework guided this exploration, aiding in the description of their business models and sustainability implications. Key success factors, challenges, opportunities, and ambitions were identified. The findings reveal that partnerships, training, and adaptability are important aspects of their enterprises. Numerous challenges emerged, including navigating unfair markets, limited access to financing, and issues surrounding corruption. Both groups articulated ambitious aspirations, such as expanding their operations, enhancing value-adding processes, and reaching international markets. They underscored the significance of product quality, customer trust, and social value, which includes income for households and gender inclusivity. These NTFPs demonstrate promising potential for sustainable development, particularly regarding social benefits, along with some environmental advantages, and they indicate connections to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study further illustrates how the SBM framework can be used to support reflection and learning in informal contexts. It presents recommendations for development initiatives and highlights issues that need to be addressed in policy frameworks.
