Artificial intelligence : a case study on the opinions of forestry production managers
As digitalization progresses, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly relevant tool in the operations of Swedish forestry companies. Despite its potential benefits in terms of efficiency, planning, and decision support, there is currently a lack of in-depth understanding of how this technology is perceived by the professionals expected to use it. Such understanding is crucial for enabling a socially sustainable technological implementation. Previous research has shown that successful adoption of new technology is not solely determined by technical performance, but also by factors such as user trust, perceived usefulness, and level of knowledge.
The aim of this study is to investigate how forestry production managers perceive a future increased use of AI as decision support in their work, and what factors influence their trust in this technology. This qualitative case study is based on semi-structured interviews with five production managers from three Swedish forestry companies. The theoretical framework is grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and a conceptual model for trust in automation.
The results show that the respondents largely view AI as a complementary tool, rather than a replacement for human decision-making. The potential to save time, reduce administrative workload, and improve decision quality is seen as strong motivation for adoption. At the same time, there is notable uncertainty surrounding the systems' functionality, transparency, and the quality of the input data. Trust in this technology is heavily influenced by its accuracy, the traceability of its decision-making processes, and the level of user-friendliness.
The study concludes that the increased implementation of AI-based decision support systems requires extensive training efforts, a well-planned implementation strategy, and clear communication about system capabilities and limitations. The future role of AI in the forestry sector is likely to depend more on how well the technology is adapted to user needs than on its technical sophistication alone. The findings suggest that social acceptance and trust are key factors in achieving a sustainable digital transformation in forestry operations
Injuries and condemnations of parts or whole carcasses recorded at slaughter of finishing pigs and the implications for animal welfare
All animals intended for human consumption must be examined before and after slaughter to ensure food safety and animal welfare. If abnormalities are discovered during the post-mortem inspection, the carcass will be assigned a specific code. Two codes related to animal health, meat condemnation and animal welfare are 39/40 (chronic traumatic injuries) and 41/42 (acute trau-matic injuries). In pigs, common types of injuries include skin lesions, hematomas, and haemorr-haging. These injuries can occur on farm, during the transport, or within the abattoir environment.
This study aimed to descriptively analyse chronic and acute traumatic injuries registered on Swedish finishing pigs after slaughter and to quantify condemnations caused by these findings. In addition, injuries can be associated with feelings of discomfort with negative effects on the ani-mals’ welfare, which is why this study also aimed to discuss the connection between traumatic injuries and animal welfare. Data was received from Gård och Djurhälsan and included 11 151 453 finishing pigs registered at Swedish abattoirs between 2017-01-01 to 2021-12-31.
The results showed that the frequency of traumatic injuries varied based on the examined variables, which were year, season, and geographic location (regions). Both chronic and acute injuries were observed to decrease over the years, with an increase during the colder months. There was also a trend between the frequency of injuries and geographic location., i.e. in which region the finishing pigs were slaughtered, where some regions had a higher incidence of trau-matic injuries than others. The total amount of condemnations during the time period as a result of injuries was 64,000 kg, which corresponded to approximately 15% of the total condemnations. Chronic injuries constituted 35,000 kg and acute injures 29,000 kg.
This study highlights the importance of providing information about slaughter remarks to the producer as well as the abattoir in order to work with improving facility design and handling practices to reduce the occurrence of injuries. However, there is a need for better alignment to improve the accuracy of meat inspection data before it can be used sufficiently as an indicator of animal welfare
Power, trust, and youth climate dialogues : an analysis of young participants’ experiences in dialogue with policymakers
The increasing concern among young people about the climate crisis has led to greater action and demands for policy change. One of these ways is through dialogue with policymakers, which aims to get the youth’s input on policy. According to the literature, climate-related youth dialogues have not achieved this goal as youth have been unable to participate meaningfully. Two of the most critical barriers to meaningful participation are a lack of trust and power imbalances. Because of this, two frameworks centering trust (Trinity of Voice) and power (Powercube) were used to analyse the experiences of six young dialogue participants. The findings suggest that there are numerous shortcomings in youth dialogues, which continue to prevent meaningful participation. To build trust and address power, dialogue processes must provide youth with adequate resources to participate, foster a collaborative atmosphere, clearly specify dialogue goals, and increase transparency regarding the use of the youth’s input. This could increase meaningful participation of youth in dialogues and thus improve the ability for youth’s input to be applied to policy. In the process of growing youth influence, the broader democratic implications of including youth more than other societal groups need to be considered to ensure just and democratic decision-making processes for everyone. For youth to influence policy, other methods than dialogues may be required, as there is a risk that the status quo cannot be effectively questioned through dialogue. Further research is necessary to produce more generalizable results and strategies that can aid in implementing actionable steps to address these shortcomings
From idea to reality? : a study on the potential of Kalmar barn in Swedish dairy production
Hållbar och lönsam mjölkproduktion förutsätter god djurvälfärd, bra arbetsmiljö och
funktionella stallar.
Sustainable and profitable dairy production requires good animal welfare, a safe working
environment, and functional barns. At the same time, investments in new facilities involve
high costs, complex decisions, and long-term consequences for the business. Against this
background, interest has grown in more cost-effective and standardized barn solutions as
alternatives to traditionally designed buildings. Kalmarstallet is one such concept barn,
developed to reduce construction costs, shorten building times, and simplify the planning
process for farmers. By offering a ready-made design with proven solutions, the concept aims
to promote more predictable and efficient construction.
This study explores young farmers process of decision-making whether there is interest in
standardized solutions, using Kalmarstallet as a case within Swedish dairy farming. Applying
the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991), the study analyzes how attitudes, subjective
norms, and perceived behavioral control influence decision-making. The empirical material is
based on qualitative interviews with five dairy farmers and one advisor.
The results indicate that Kalmarstallet generates interest, particularly from a cost and time
efficiency perspective. However, criticism was raised concerning its limited flexibility and the
absence of reference farms in actual operation. The ability to customize certain parts of the
barn is considered essential for farmers to perceive the investment as functional and
sustainable in the long run. The study shows that farmers’ investment decisions are not solely
based on financial calculations but are also shaped by social influences and personal values.
Peer experiences, family support, and bank assessments play a significant role, whereas
advisors were seen as having limited influence. Kalmarstallet may have potential, especially
for youngstock or beef cattle housing. However for it to be accepted and a real breakthrough
within milk production, greater social acceptance, practical examples, and some degree of
adaptability are needed
Risk management in Swedish grain production : a qualitative study of farmers decision making processes when choosing sales strategy
There is uncertainty in Swedish grain production due to market volatility, climate change and political events. The study investigates how grain producers make decisions about sales strategies as a way to manage these financial risks. The purpose of this study is to map the decision-making process of Swedish grain producers when choosing a sales strategy, and to identify which factors influence these decisions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six grain producers with their own storage without animal production. The farmers were men of varying ages, 30–60 years, evenly distributed geographically between Väst- and Östergötland. The results from the interviews show that grain producers manage financial uncertainty primarily by spreading sales over time and using different sales channels, but that sales strategies differ between farmers. The choice of strategy is influenced by factors such as experience, risk appetite and economic conditions, rather than by a uniform model. The results also show that all respondents' decision-making processes are similar and can be combined with previous research on the subject. This study can serve as a support for new farmers by highlighting how a well-thought-out sales strategy can help reduce financial risk and underline the importance of a structured decision-making process to avoid hasty decisions with potentially negative economic consequences
Ecological analysis of macroinvertebrates in remediated ditches based on their functional traits
This study evaluated the effect of agricultural ditch rehabilitation using a two-stage
design on water quality and the composition of functional traits in aquatic
macroinvertebrate communities. Nineteen paired sites in southern and central
Sweden were analysed, each with a remediated downstream section and an
unremediated upstream section.
No statistically significant differences were found in the physicochemical
parameters analysed, although the remediated sections had lower maximum values
and less dispersion for several pollutants. Likewise, traditional taxonomic
indicators such as richness, total abundance and metrics based on Ephemeroptera,
Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) also showed no clear differences between
conditions.
However, functional analysis identified nine traits with a high contribution to
functional dissimilarity. Intermediate body size showed a positive relationship with
total phosphorus and a negative relationship with suspended solids. Significant
associations were also observed between life cycle duration traits (short and long)
and turbidity, suggesting reproductive responses to conditions of increased
sedimentation.
These results suggest that, although no overall improvements in water quality and
taxonomy were detected, the analysis of functional traits highlighted ecological
signals that conventional metrics overlooked in this dataset. Therefore,
incorporating this complementary approach into monitoring programmes could
improve the ecological assessment of restoration interventions in agricultural
landscapes
Assessing the interaction between Ophiostoma quercus and Heterobasidion spp : an in vitro study
The effects of climate change pose growing challenges for forestry, and the need for climate change-adapted management in the sector is growing. One of these changes is the need to increase the number of deciduous trees to improve forest resilience. The most dominant deciduous tree in Sweden is Betula spp (birch), and it will play an increasingly important role in adapting Swedish forests to climate change in the future. It is therefore important to consider potential challenges that may arise when planting more birch.
Heterobasidion root rot is a pathogenic fungus that infects several hosts, causes tree decay and leads to high economic losses all over Europe. While Heterobasidion primarily affects conifers, it can also infect broadleaf trees. Although some research indicates that birch can become infected with Heterobasidion when planted on previously infected sites, the degree to which it will become infected following thinning, in the absence of biological treatment, remains poorly understood. Therefore, a study (unpublished) was conducted to investigate the infection of Heterobasidion on birch stumps. The study revealed unexpectedly low indices of the pathogenic fungus Heterobasidion on the stumps, in contrast to the high prevalence of the non-pathogenic fungus Ophiostoma quercus. This raised the question of whether Ophiostoma is the cause of the low occurrence of Heterobasidion.
To investigate this, an in vitro pairing experiment was performed to determine if an interaction occurs between the two fungi. Contrary to the initial assumption that O. quercus would inhibit the growth of Heterobasidion, it appeared to not affect or in some cases increase its growth. Other interesting growth trends have been observed, however, which need to be investigated further
Comparative literature study between biological and chemical plant protection in the horticultural field
viktig del i arbetet.
delas in i 3 strategier: Förstärkande, Bevarande och klassisk bekämpning. Biologisk
In Sweden, there are two types of farming systems: conventional farming and organic farming.
However, for both systems, biodiversity and ecosystem services are essential for food
production. The need for pollinators to pollinate crops and soil fertility in agricultural lands
depends on worms and bacteria for decomposition. Agenda 2030 was approved by the UN’s
global leaders in 2015 with the goal of meeting the needs of the current generation and future
generations without risking or depleting natural resources. To work towards Agenda 2030,
Sweden established environmental quality objectives to strive toward achieving the goals and
to provide a foundation for how Swedish policy should be governed and what the Swedish
environment should be like. Food production and the manufacturing process are important parts
of this work.
By law, both farming systems must apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM), where the final
step is the use of mechanical, chemical, or biological plant protection. This work is based on a
literature study comparing biological and chemical plant protection in open fields from the
sustainability perspectives of economy, ecology, and society. The purpose is to examine
whether biological plant protection could be applicable in conventional farming to promote
sustainable agriculture from the ecological, economic, and social sustainability perspectives.
Biological plant protection is divided into three strategies: Augmentative, Conservation, and
Classical biological control. Biological plant protection targets specific plant pests and involves
low environmental and health risk. Biological plant protection is more sustainable in terms of
ecology and social aspects, as it targets only the plant pests without polluting soil or waterways
or posing a risk to human health. Chemical plant protection is not sustainable in terms of
ecology and social aspects, but it is fast-acting and effective, which is beneficial for securing
seasonal harvests and economic returns. The conditions for the use of chemical plant protection
products are decided by the EU Commission concerning active substances. Each EU country
then decides whether to approve the substances. The Swedish Chemicals Agency is the
responsible authority in consultation with the Swedish Food Agency and the Swedish Board of
Agriculture
Sustainable cities and the value of aesthetics : an analysis of space and perception in Augustenborg
komplexa utmaningar. This study examines sustainable urban development
with sustainable ambitions, with a special focus on
Augustenborg in Malmö, which is highlighted as a
forerunner in implementing sustainable strategies
in urban transformation. The aim of the thesis is to
study the structure of Augustenborg and people’s
perceptions of it, to provide a deeper understanding
of the interplay between ecological, social, and
aesthetic aspects.
Qualitative methods have been used, including
Augustenborg as a case study, together
with interviews with professionals working on
sustainability projects. The thesis maps out lessons
and insights from Augustenborg and similar projects
such as Gröna Solberga. The results show that longterm
sustainable solutions require more than just
technical efforts- they are grounded in collaboration
and integration of socio-ecological and aesthetic
values.
The conclusion is that an integrated approach is
crucial, as a sustainable future requires an inclusive
perspective where environmental, social factors,
and a revised understanding of aesthetics, are
all integrated and interconnected. By drawing on
lessons from previous projects, we can develop new
strategies to address the complex challenges of the
future
Differences in nature conservation priorities in urban-adjacent areas : a comparative interview study of larger and smaller municipalities
Nature conservation plays a crucial role in supporting the recovery of ecosystems affected by human activity. When carried out effectively, conservation efforts can enhance the resilience of ecosystems through increased biodiversity and the preservation of essential ecosystem services. Urban green spaces are especially important – not only for protecting biodiversity, but also for promoting public health through recreation, physical activity, play, and opportunities for learning.
The aim of this study is to explore how municipalities of different sizes prioritize nature conservation in urban and peri-urban areas. The focus lies on identifying challenges faced by municipalities in their conservation work, as well as potential improvements to facilitate the implementation of conservation measures.
Interview results show no clear correlation between the size of a municipality and how it prioritizes nature conservation in urban areas. Instead, other factors are more influential, such as the types of habitats present in the municipality, the extent of collaboration with local organizations, associations, and businesses, and the level of local engagement. Differences in attitudes toward nature conservation were also evident in how interviewees chose to highlight various local projects.
The discussion compares these differences and examines possible explanations for their emergence. The importance of local engagement is emphasized as a key factor in successfully implementing conservation initiatives. As the findings show no obvious difference between large and small municipalities, the discussion also raises suggestions for future research. One proposed approach is to examine how resources are distributed and used, not based on total municipal budgets, but in terms of per capita allocation
