Furthermore this allows patients to enact self care. These conclusions have led to a project called “FaR - Fysisk aktivitet på Recept” which enables health personnel to prescribe hiking as a treatment to battle various types of physical and mental illnesses. Furthermore, mental illness and emotions of stress display a strong correlation. This study analyses two hiking trails recommended by healthcare officials. The hiking trails are analysed through the use of eight perceived dimensions with a relation to stress reduction. Through the study the perceived dimensions are referred to as nature, culture, prospect, social, space, rich in species, refuge and serene. Nature, rich in species and refuge are the perceived dimensions which most strongly correlate with a reduction of stress. Furthermore they work even better in combination with each other. The two hiking trails are analysed during movement through the environment. Hence has sequences with various perceived dimensions been identified. This result clearly stated nature and rich in species as the most commonly registered perceived dimensions, which indicates well functioning conditions to promote stress reduction. The perceived dimension refuge was more seldom experienced which could be improved on to further promote stress reduction. Discussing the result enlightened that perceived dimensions clearly linked to wilderness were more frequently registered. Furthermore discussing this work highlighted how these perceived dimensions relate strongly to large areas. This consequently gives these perceived dimensions conditions to be found along the hiking trails since they are surrounded by large wilderness like areas. In addition this study discusses the perceived dimension refuge in relation to spatiality in different forest types. Future research regarding the relationship between perceived dimensions and different types of forest would be interesting. Furthermore the study highlights the importance of outdoor recreation on a consistent basis. Hence future studies could also explore the possibilities of facilitating FaR-trails closer to urban life whilst still containing the vital stress reducing capabilities of the trails found in rural areas

Loose part materials contribute with great value to children’s play, health and development, but despite this is not so common in planned play environments. Through the management of common green spaces, natural loose part materials such as branches, leaves and grass is created all year round, which could become such play material. Research describes the management staff’s potential to contribute to children’s play environments, which is considered urgent to investigate more practically. There are international guidelines and toolboxes that describe the implementation of loose part materials in play environments, which can be adapted and serve as inspiration in this work. The project involved investigating how loose part materials from maintenance can be used and added to different play environments in collaboration with maintenance staff. The aim was to observe how the material and the way it is distributed affects the children´s play and the place, as well as how maintenance staff can be involved in this work. The investigation was done through a literature study followed by a multiple case study. The results showed that the loose part materials contributed to curiosity among children, various types of play and activation of the environment, especially through the presence of maintenance staff, becoming part of their working routine. It also emerged that loose materials can create conflicts, that it needs to be supplied regularly and that some of the material needs to be recollected again. While general guidelines provide valuable support, they highlight the need for deeper, site-specific collaboration to effectively implement loose play elements and shift cultural perceptions surrounding them

    Organisational Models for Agricultural Co-operatives

The aim of the thesis is to study the effects that different financial solutions may have on the organisational mode of Irish dairy co-operatives. Membership, marketing and management are examined in four different enterprises. These areas are examined using the agency theory and property rights theory. Glanbia Group PLC, Golden Vale PLC and Kerry Group PLC were all former traditional co-operatives transformed into Public Limited Companies (PLCs) in the 1980s. Dairygold remained a traditional co-operative. The environmental conditions of the Irish dairy sector are studied in order to better understand the accomplished changes into PLCs. European co-operative dairy processors endeavour to expand their business operations internationally and into markets for value-added products. The organisational structure and the financial capability of the co-operatives confine investments in such businesses. External investors could be necessary in order to raise sufficient capital. The Irish dairy processors have such experiences. The findings show that the Irish dairy farmers are acting on a “sellers market”. The milk-quota regime, together with the intervention system, are guaranteeing the dispose of the farmers’ milk to a satisfying profit. This combined with a large number of processors and a transparent price system implies that the farmers do not perceive any market failure. The farmers have small incentives in organising the processing of their milk vertically in co-operative firms according to the transaction cost theory. The result of the interviews suggests that Dairygold, the traditional co-operative, plays an important role as competitive yardstick regarding the milk price paid to farmers. Notwithstanding, the substantial amounts of unallocated capital and the international businesses suggest that the patron role and investor role of the members are weak. This creates serious agency problems. Consequently, Dairygold could be considered as a degenerated co-operative. Glanbia and Kerry could be considered as entrepreneurial co-operatives. The introduction of tradable shares in the PLC-part of the organisation has better defined the property rights and removed the agency problems associated with traditional co-operatives. However, the agency problems have remained within the farmers’ new co-operative societies. The reason is the substantial amount of unallocated capital in that part of the organisation. Golden Vale quoted the whole enterprise on the stock exchange market. The farmers in the original geographical area of where the firm is located retained control of some parts of the primary processing. Golden Vale could be considered as a combination co-operative. The organisation is not associated with any agency problems characterising traditional co-operatives. There is no conflict between the external investors and the milk suppliers in the PLCs regarding the milk price, due to a competitive market structure. For the same reason the farmers’ formal influence of the PLCs is of subordinated importance. The introduction of tradable shares in the PLCs has made them more market oriented. It has opened the possibility for the PLCs to act from an organisational point of view and develop the potential of the skills and competencies of the enterprises. Dairygold is much more producer oriented. The presence of a share price allows the PLCs to use a senior management remuneration system that give managers clear incentives of acting in the interest of the shareholders. The transformation into PLCs has probably increased the possibilities of recruiting managers from outside the “co-operative sphere”. The usage of external experts on the boards of directors in the PLCs is enhancing the possibilities of finding competent and skilled directors

Genetic and Metabolic Analysis of Rhodotorula toruloides Strains for Enhanced Lipid Production

In the context of sustainable biofuel production, oleaginous yeasts are emerging as critical players in the search for profitable, greener alternatives to fossil fuels. These microbes, known for their powerful lipid synthesis capabilities, have the potential to convert renewable, low-value biomass into economically valuable lipids. This process offers potential profit by significantly lowering production costs compared to conventional lipid sources, such as vegetable oils, and mitigating associated environmental impacts. Among these, the Rhodotorula species stand out for their strong lipid production skills and genetic diversity (Osman et al., 2022)(Zhang et al., 2021). The need to identify replacements for traditional lipid sources cannot be overstressed. Traditional methods are not only unsustainable but also have significant environmental consequences. Oleaginous yeasts provide a possible alternative since they convert low-value, non-food biomass into high-value lipids. This skill presents them as a sustainable alternative for waste management and the production of biofuels, chemicals, and food additives (Zhang et al., 2021). Rhodotorula yeasts, in particular, are known for their ability to use a wide range of substrates, including waste products and raw plant materials, which has the potential to drastically transform the existing economic landscape toward sustainability. This master's thesis dives into the genetic complexities of three Rhodotorula strains— two parental strains (CBS 14 and CBS 349) and one hybrid strain (CBS 6016), with the goal of investigating the genetic and metabolic capabilities of the hybrid strain CBS 6016, focusing on the inheritance and functionality of key metabolic pathways, particularly those involved in lipid production. Our findings show that CBS 6016 inherits a large number of protein sequences from both parental strains, preserving essential metabolic functions, as well as a partial loss of some enzymes suggests potential areas where metabolic capabilities could be affecting overall fitness and growth

This work examines how natural environments can be planned and designed to emphasize the existing values of the site and create an improved experience. Special focus is placed on combining recreation and active forestry. The project results in a proposal for a campsite and a hiking trail at Krämarebygget on Hallandsåsen, with associated management principles. The starting point includes environmental psychology, people's preferences for different natural environments and forestry practices. The study shows that outdoor recreation and production forestry can coexist, but requires a balanced approach between nature conservation, recreation and forestry. With adapted management and design, the accessibility and experiential values of the area can be enhanced, while preserving natural and cultural values

A case study analysis of food waste in the production kitchen of an airline catering company in Sweden

    Get PDF
Food waste poses a major global issue with profound environmental, economic, and social consequences, exacerbating climate change, resource depletion, and ecological degradation. Within this context, the airline industry, as a resource-intensive sector, faces increasing scrutiny for its environmental footprint, particularly in relation to in-flight catering services, where food waste not only entails the loss of edible products but also the inefficient use of essential resources such as land, water, and energy. With the huge influence and potential to serve billion of airline passengers, there is a lack of adequate research in this area. Through a case study of airline catering food production, the study aims to address this gap by conducting a comprehensive analysis of food waste within the production kitchen to identify food waste hotspots and interview with the staff to investigate the factors enabling food waste generation. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates quantitative waste audits with qualitative thematic analyses of staff interviews to quantify food waste and identify its primary drivers. Findings revealed that vegetable waste constitutes 32% of total food waste, with crew and business class meals accounting for 78% of the waste generated. Notably, the hot kitchen emerged as the predominant source of food waste in volume and edibility, with trolley waste accounting for 69% of the total waste recorded based on waste classification, and preparation and portioning accounted for 28% and 3%, respectively. These insights underscore the need for targeted interventions, such as optimising forecasting systems, standardising menus, and enhancing staff training to promote efficient resource utilisation. The study recommends a holistic, system-wide approach to food waste management, emphasising the most preferred approaches which aim at prevention and reduction at the source instead of the least preferred approach, which is solutions like energy recovery before landfill disposal. By illuminating the composition and drivers of food waste in airline catering, this research provides actionable recommendations for industry stakeholders aiming to implement sustainable food waste management practices and policies

Animal welfare in different housing systems for dairy cows in Sweden : a qualitative interview study with farmers, construction advisors and housing system salesmen

    No full text
This qualitative study aimed to investigate differences in various aspects of animal welfare between the housing systems tie stall and loose-housing with and without cubicles respectively, for dairy cows. Originally, the tie stall system has been the traditional way of keeping dairy cows, with a lot of small farms with few cows in each barn. Today, many of the small farms have disappeared and the farms that remain are larger and keep more cows. The tie stall system is gradually being phased out and replaced by loose-housing systems, with a great diversity in the design of the stables. The design of the stable will greatly affect the animal welfare. Therefore, it is of interest to investigate how the welfare of our cows is affected by the housing system in which they are kept. One way of describing animal welfare is with three keystones: affective state, biological function and natural behavior, but there are also other definitions. This work consists of two parts. A literature study was carried out, focusing on how animal welfare can be measured, and how it is affected by different housing systems. In addition to this, three different professions within the Swedish milk sector (farmers, construction advisors and housing system salesmen), have been interviewed about their opinion on how animal welfare can be affected by different housing systems. The interviewees were also asked which factors influence when a new construction or reconstruction of a stable is planned and carried out. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The literature study and the interviews illustrated that animal welfare is multifactorial, as the complex interaction between housing system, management and other factors determines how good the animal welfare is. There was no obvious pattern that, for example, a certain profession or that farmers with the same housing system had the same opinion about animal welfare. But the limited number of interviews in this study means that this cannot be stated with certainty. There are several different protocols for assessing animal welfare in dairy cows. Many of them primarily assess the welfare aspect biological function and will therefore have lower relevance than a protocol that takes all three welfare aspects into account. This overemphasis on focus on biological function has also been seen in animal welfare research, which is likely due to the fact that many of the factors that are usually included in biological function, are easier to measure. The interviews revealed that there are many things to consider when building a loose-housing system. Animal welfare is one of them, but other factors also play a major role and among these were financial limitations described as the most crucial factor that sets the framework for the entire project, and sometimes means that the welfare needs to be downgraded. All housing systems have their pros and cons, and therefore it is not obvious that the animals are better off in a certain housing system. Almost all informants thought that cows were having a better welfare in loose-housing systems compared to tie stall systems, because that system has better opportunities to provide a good welfare. However, several informants from all professions discussed that the welfare can still be fine for a tethered cow, if you compensate for the disadvantages that that system entails. In summary, the conclusion is that loose-housing systems have better abilities to fulfill more welfare aspects for a cow, where especially the aspect of natural behavior is difficult to satisfy in a tie stall. And there are several different loose-housing systems that both provide good welfare and function well for both animals and humans

Development for whom: Looking beyond the North-South Divide of Agricultural Development in the German-African Context : a comparative discourse approach

    Get PDF
Globally, the agricultural sector confronts a wide range of development issues, from mitigating climate change to increasing economic growth and food security. To some extent, assumptions about development seem to differ between the Global North and South, thereby showing a continued divide between the two. This divide not only influences policymaking but also farmers, who are subject to external conceptualisations of agricultural development that subsequently impact their own agency and position. To investigate this topic, I conducted a comparative discourse analysis based on the approaches of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Narrative Policy Analysis (NPA) to identify dominant discourses and policy narratives being formulated and applied by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in the context of sustainable agricultural development strategies both within Germany and in its foreign development projects. Furthermore, using the Discursive Agency Approach (DAA), I identified both the BMEL’s discursive agency and how the material assigned discursive agency and subject positions to farmers to further understand possible overlaps and differences. My findings suggest that the discourses and policy narratives used by the BMEL show some similarities, mainly in the way that they privilege expert knowledge and in the focus on technical solutions for socio-political problems, thereby depoliticising development. This is not surprising, since the BMEL and the analysed material are embedded in the same institutions, namely the European Union (EU) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, there are still differences in conceptualisation, which might be due to the fundamental conundrum at the centre of development efforts. Here, a barrier is constructed between countries at the giving and countries at the receiving end of development, thereby continuously justifying intervention measures. This notion is further compounded by the concept of European Modernity, which creates a hierarchy between countries of the Global North as a pinnacle of development and countries of the Global South in need of the same development. These concepts create an ‘other’ when looking toward the BMEL's foreign development projects and a homogeneity of knowledge production in the domestic context. Furthermore, the BMEL discursively reduces farmers’ agency both domestically and abroad as a means to legitimise their policies. While farmers are conceptualised as heroes in need of financial support in the domestic context, they are imagined as an ‘other’ in need of empowerment and uplifting in the international context, thereby showing clear differences and indicating continued power imbalances within Germany and in its international development projects

Digital tools in the design process to enhance landscape architectural qualities and sustainable solutions : how artificial intelligence, extended reality and new technologies can change and develop the work process in the future

    Get PDF
This thesis explores how digital tools, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR), can support and enhance work methods within the field of landscape architecture. The profession is undergoing a technological shift, as emerging and increasingly advanced digital tools influence both the role of the landscape architect and the processes of design and project execution. The study aims to identify digital tools with the potential to strengthen landscape architectural qualities and promote sustainable solutions, as well as to investigate how these technologies can improve communication, streamline workflows, and enhance collaboration between landscape architects, clients, and users. The study is conducted as a qualitative and exploratory investigation, based on three methodological components: semi-structured interviews with professionals from Swedish architecture firms, a literature review, and example-based studies. The findings show that while traditional tools such as AutoCAD still dominate practice, emerging innovations offer new possibilities, especially through 3D modeling, extended reality, parametric design, and generative AI. Digital tools can complement traditional methods and support more data-driven, strategic, and evidence-based design processes. The example study of Sweco’s climate analysis tool, BIMitigation, demonstrates how climate-impacting materials can be identified early in a project through a 3D model, enabling more informed and strategic design and material choices. Data-driven working methods can strengthen the connection between ecological, social, and functional values, particularly when used in combination with professional design expertise. Digital tools should be viewed as supportive instruments in the design process: not replacements for professional competence, but complements that can enhance the landscape architect’s work. The results highlight that 3D modeling, VR, and AR are especially valuable for improving communication among stakeholders in the design process. AI shows significant future potential but still requires further development to be effectively implemented in professional practice. The study also identifies a need for further research on the long-term effects of AI on creativity, professional identity, the role of digital tools in education, and the development of strategic approaches for their integration in the field
