The Green Innovation Park as a research showcase and real-life lab for the SLU Alnarp campus

    Get PDF
The project site, which until recently hosted the Green Innovation Park, is located centrally on the SLU campus in Alnarp. In its current state the site reflects neither the curriculum of SLU nor the mission statement. In order to rectify this situation a research-based design approach is employed to transform the site into an exemplary piece of green infrastructure. A survey is carried out into the research conducted and education offered at SLU. Based on these results and a thorough analysis of the site, design modules are developed to supply the best possible design solution for every situation prevalent at the site. These content-based design modules are then added to an overlying structure which provides cohesion for the design. The result is a design which provides multiple ecosystem services and reflects the research conducted and education offered at SLU. It serves as a showcase for the research and a real-life lab and case study for the students, while at the same time being an attractive site inviting students and visitors alike to linger

The Meeting of Life and Death : inclusion of Children as Visitors to the Cemetery

In this work, different perspectives on the inclusion of children as visitors in cemeteries have been explored. This was done by examining related research and theories, which revealed a lack of content on the inclusion of children in cemeteries. However, there are several studies on related topics, such as the acceptance of various activities in cemeteries, urban densification, and the need of green public spaces. After the literature review, interviews were conducted with different persons connected to cemeteries, including cemetery managers, a vicar, a landscape architect, and the project leaders of an initiative aimed to increase children's knowledge about cemeteries. Then, the work focused on examining how well children are included today, looking into a few examples. A multiple case study was carried out, involving a landscape analysis of two cemeteries, followed by scoring using a tool developed by the author, for this work, but also interviews with people associated with each case. The overall findings from the different methods indicate a willingness to include children more. Some factors seem to be problematic to make that possible, for example, who is responsible. Also, the lack of knowledge, time, and tools to achieve this. Suggestions that have come up are to put it om the cemetery service and/or the school, to give a chance for children of different religions to feel welcome

Geographical Information Systems, GIS, is a software used to manage geographical data and can be applied in many areas. In the environmental context, there are many uses for GIS. For example, the software can be used to analyse land areas, make risk assessments and present solar radiation in an area. The aim of this thesis is to use GIS to find a suitable method to analyse data from the environmental monitoring program with small agricultural catchments. The program is part of the Swedish environmental monitoring and is made for the purpose of monitoring water quality, nitrogen and phosphorus losses in watercourses in small agricultural-dominated catchments and to gain knowledge of how water quality varies with cultivation, climate and soil type as well as to investigate its change over time. In the program, there are a total of 18 small agricultural catchments that are distributed throughout Sweden and are selected to be examples of agriculture in each county. Eight of these are intensive monitored areas, and in the areas, interviews are also made with farmers about crops and cultivation measures. The thesis analyses the catchment area N34 in Halland and the type of soil, and the catch crops and main crops that grow in the area. In the thesis, a method has been developed where data from a database is used together with raster file and vector files

Econef is a children’s center located in northern Tanzania outside the village of Kingori in the Arusha region. Since the start of the project in 2009, a tangible growth has taken place in several stages, resulting in an orphanage built based on sustainable solutions. In addition, there has been a development of activities with animal husbandry, cultivation, tree planting and preschool. Today, Econef needs a play environment where several factors must be taken into account and long term solutions are required. This thesis intends to use participatory processes and on site investigations to develop a design proposal for the development of the new play environment, which can serve as a basis for further planning stages. The purpose of the work is to contribute knowledge on how to design and create good conditions for play, learning and sustainable development at a children’s center in rural Tanzania. The proposal is based on site specific aspects and Econef ’s overall goal; to become a place that will serve as a role model for the village and where several ages can meet and learn from each other. The design process has taken place in collaboration with the users, where ideas and knowledge have been shared through creative activities. The work discusses and concretizes the challenges of working as a Swedish landscape architect with projects in a new unfamiliar cultural context, and reflects throughout the work in a transparent way the problems that prevail and how to relate to this

Food loss in carrot production : reasons, reduction and alternative utilization

    Get PDF
The purpose of this project is to identify ways to reduce food loss before they occur in primary production, as well as how food loss should be handled to create the greatest benefit in avoiding resource waste in production of carrots. The project is split into parts. The first part handles the conditions for cultivation, techniques and measures for cultivation, and storage conditions, as well as provide information about the occurrence and prevention of food loss. The second part handles alternative ways to utilize food loss. Food loss is a reduction of quality or quantity that happens in primary production of products aimed at becoming food. Within the Swedish production of carrots over 30% of the produced produce do not become food. Reduction of food loss is relevant because it resonates with several of the United nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, as well as domestic goals in Sweden. Goals such as an aim to increase the amount of food that goes further in the value chain. Food loss mainly occurs due to carrots of poor quality, such as cracks in the taproot and moldy carrots, food loss may also occur during harvest and handling of the carrots. A considerable amount of quality defects that lead to food loss originate from conditions during cultivation, therefore a large amount of the quality loss can be minimized by choices of cultivation techniques and measures. Simultaneously other production factors such as storage conditions and choice of cultivation systems. Alternative ways to utilize food loss within carrot production that are investigated in the project are based on the hierarchy of food loss, from which three options have been selected. Prevention of food waste and food loss by processing, food loss carrots as animal feed, and bioenergy in the form’s biogas and bioethanol. The circumstances of production such as geographic placement and nearby companies have an impact on the effects of the utilization of food loss

Horse meat as food : the equine veterinarian’s perspective

From society's perspective, the horse is primarily seen as a companion animal, even though it is defined as a production animal by law. The contradictory classification creates complexities around horse slaughter and the consumption of horse meat. The aims of the study were to obtain knowledge about how equine veterinarians in Sweden perceive the horse as food, with a focus on substances that, when administrated, results in a lifelong prohibition of slaughter (substances banned for production animals), and their views on horse slaughter and consumption of horse meat. An internet-based survey was distributed by Facebook and email to equine veterinarians in Sweden, which resulted in a total of 146 responses. The majority (86%) of the veterinarians in the study consider themselves to have good or very good knowledge of substances that render horses lifelong prohibition from slaughter. A strong association was observed between work with other production animals in addition to horses and the handling of these banned substances. Veterinarians working with other production animals were more inclined to consider alternative substances before those banned for slaughter and informed the horse owner about the consequences of these substances more frequently than the veterinarian exclusively working with horses. More than half of participating equine veterinarians had a positive attitude towards horse slaughter and made no distinction between the consumption of horse meat and meat from other production animals. Variables such as working exclusively with horses and being under 40 years of age were associated with an increased resistance to horse meat consumption. If the goal is to reduce the total food waste and make use of available food resources, society's view of the horse as food needs to be challenged and the equine veterinarian could be the right group to undertake this challenge. More and clearer information about horse slaughter for equine veterinarians and horse owners is needed for a change to occur

Early warning systems for European spruce bark beetle : what exists and how are they used

    Get PDF
The European spruce bark beetle (ESBB), Ips typographus, has killed roughly 34 million cubic meters of Norway spruce (Picea abies) in Sweden since the drought in 2018. Outbreaks of this species have led to direct impacts on timber markets, transformations of landscape structures and can alter ecosystem functioning. With increasing summer and winter temperatures in combination with changes in precipitation patterns, the risk of ESBB outbreaks will increase in the future. Monitoring population developments during endemic and epidemic (outbreak) phases is important for damage and forest management. To reduce and prevent direct and indirect damage caused by ESBB, early detection is necessary. Despite this, there are no current comprehensive monitoring system available in Sweden. Such a system would ideally be incorporated in a framework to forecast risk of damage available in forestry practices. The aim of this study is divided in two objectives. The first objective is to assess the available tools for early warning used in Swedish forestry practices. The second objective is to understand forest company attitudes towards the available methods and the development of an early warning system. To reach the first aim, a literature study of available monitoring tools and early warning system was used. For the second aim, interviews with forest practitioners from different forest companies in Sweden were conducted. The results for the first aim showed that ground surveys, pheromone traps, risk maps, remote sensing are common tools to monitor ESBB population, infestations and outbreaks. The literature study also showed that there are no early warning systems for ESBB outbreaks available in Sweden. However, researchers in Austria and Slovenia have developed early warning systems for ESBB outbreaks that are available for forest owners. The results for the second aim of this study showed that forest companies combine different monitoring tools and use their own experiences with ESBB to manage and prevent ESBB related problems. The forest practitioners’ attitudes indicate that while the introduction of an early warning system for ESBB outbreaks is perceived positively, there is some scepticism regarding its actual implementation due to certain challenges. This reflects a contradictory stance that require further investigation. However, an explicit early warning system for ESBB infestations could help stakeholders in the forest sector to keep population densities low during endemic periods, save timber value and help forest companies with planning of resources

Greener thumbs at Gunnared’s church : a design proposal for the outdoor environment of a modern church with the monastery garden as inspiration

    Get PDF
This project concerns the environments around Gunnared’s church, a church in Angered, in Nylöse parish. The church’s courtyard and entrances need to be improved to adapt to new needs. This work uses the monastery garden as a source of inspiration. The essay includes a literature study where I go through the history of the monastery gardens, accessibility and also the impact of the environment on health. In the area around the church, I analyze the conditions of the place; connections to different residential areas, sun and wind conditions, entrances and more. The work culminates in a design proposal for Gunnared’s church’s courtyard and its entrances. The proposal includes the possibility of cultivation in the courtyard that is accessible to many, improved spatiality that is also linked to the monasteries’ ideals, and a water element. Furthermore, other proposals for improvements have also been developed, these with a lower level of detail, including rerouting of pedestrian and bicycle paths, and a new accessible entrance to Gunnared’s church. The essay discusses the questions: what could Gunnared’s church’s outdoor environment look like if it were inspired by the monasteries’ environments, thoughts and cultivations; what notions of nature’s beneficial properties existed in the monasteries and which exist today; and how to work with accessibility in, on and around Gunnared’s church

Evaluating the Interaction between Isoeugenol and Nutraceuticals on Anaesthesia Efficiency in Salmonids

The rapid growth of the aquaculture industry has brought increased attention to fish welfare, especially with rising demand for ethical and sustainable aquaculture practices. Traditional anaesthetics, like MS-222 (Tricaine), are effective but raise concerns related to fish welfare, environmental impact, and humane consumption due to their chemical nature. This study addresses these concerns by evaluating the efficacy of a novel herbal formulation combined with isoeugenol, a plant-derived anaesthetic, in promoting welfare outcomes for salmonids, specifically in rainbow trout and brown trout. The research involved a detailed assessment of the anaesthetic’s impact on welfare parameters, examining stress biomarkers (cortisol) and tissue integrity through histological analysis of gills. Preliminary trials compared induction times, recovery rates, isoeugenol dose responses, and sedation depth of the herbal-isoeugenol formulation against MS-222. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to analyse skin-on-fillet tissue concentrations, providing data to determine safe withdrawal periods for human consumption of isoeugenol-treated fish. Results showed that MS-222 achieved faster induction than lower doses of isoeugenol, while higher isoeugenol concentrations improved induction times. Nutraceutical additions had minimal impact on recovery times and anaesthesia depth but were associated with increased structural changes in S. trutta gills and elevated cortisol levels at higher doses. HPLC analysis detected residual isoeugenol in tissues 48 hours post-exposure, indicating potential influence of nutraceuticals on retention. The findings suggest that the herbal formulation combined with isoeugenol could offer a more sustainable, welfare-friendly alternative to conventional anaesthetics, with potential benefits for reducing stress, supporting recovery, and enhancing overall fish health. However, it is essential for future research to further investigate and refine optimal dosing and formation impacts. This research provides valuable insights into humane and environmentally responsible aquaculture practices, aligning with consumer demand for ethically produced seafood

Svenska Naturskyddsföreningens syn på svenskt skogsbruk

    Get PDF
Swedish forests have long played a central role in the country’s industrial and economic development by providing raw materials such as charcoal, mine props, sawmill products, and later cellulose-based goods. Forestry has promoted technological advancement, employment, and domestic trade, while also generating significant export revenues. Despite these societal benefits, forestry has in recent decades faced growing criticism due to its environmental impact, particularly in relation to large scale methods such as clear-cutting (known in Sweden as “trakthyggesbruk”). These practices have altered forest structures and reduced ecological diversity, resulting in a notable decline in many forest-dependent species. Some forest areas are now considered biologically valuable and may be protected through legislation or voluntary agreements. At the same time, forests are expected to play an essential role in the transition toward climate sustainability. Currently, forest growth exceeds harvesting levels, meaning that forests act as carbon sinks while also supplying renewable raw materials. This dual function creates a conflict between climate benefits and the preservation of biodiversity. It raises a critical question: what does sustainable forestry truly entail? The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) argues that current forestry practices are not ecologically sustainable and advocates for a transition toward more nature-based forestry methods. The organization works to increase forest protection, reduce the reliance on clear-cutting, and promote alternative management practices that maintain natural forest structures and dynamics. SSNC engages in public advocacy at the municipal, regional, and national levels. A study conducted as part of a bachelor’s thesis in the Forest Management Program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet, SLU) explored how SSNC members in Västmanland County perceive the development of Swedish forestry, with particular focus on sustainability. The study combined survey data with in-depth interviews conducted with six SSNC members. The majority of participants reported that forestry has become less sustainable since the 1980s. Trust in the forestry sector was generally low among members, and no significant generational differences could be identified. Despite recognizing the economic importance of forestry, 71 percent of respondents stated that clear-cutting should not be part of future Swedish forest management
