Eutrophication is one of the Baltic Sea region’s most pressing environmental issues, with agricultural practices contributing significantly to phosphorus runoff. In Finland, gypsum amendment (calcium sulfate) has emerged as an effective method to reduce phosphorus losses from arable land. This study investigates the potential use of gypsum spreading in an ålandic context, focusing particularly on farmers’ practical experiences and perceptions. This study consists of a literature review along with a qualitative interview study, which was conducted on farmers participating in the Interreg-project GYPREG on Åland.
Findings in this study indicate that farmers are generally positive toward the method, primarily because the gypsum was provided free of charge and much of the application logistics were handled by external project organizers. Most farmers applied gypsum to clay soils, which aligns with earlier studies identifying such soils as most responsive to treatment. Few negative effects were reported, though some farmers expressed concern about possible soil nutrient imbalances.
This study highlights that the farmers’ willingness to continue using gypsum depends largely on continued external funding. While the method is seen as both simple and technically feasible, many participants requested clearer evidence of long-term soil effects and environmental benefits. Overall, this study suggests that gypsum application could be a valuable component of future water protection strategies in the Baltic Sea region, provided that its use is supported by ongoing research, policy backing, and local engagement
In this process, valuable landscape and cultural values risk being lost. Östra Hagastaden is one such case, where a major development is planned between the Royal National City Park and the 19th-century stone city. The current detailed development plan has been criticized for its limited green areas, lack of outdoor spaces for children and youth, and for conflicting with designated national interests.
This thesis questions the existing plan and proposes a design proposal that respects the site’s national values while creating a more connected and inclusive neighborhood. By reducing building density and redistributing volumes, space is made available for an extended district park and a school area with high-quality outdoor environments.
The proposal draws inspiration from Stockholm’s park tradition and landscape character and is designed with particular attention to the needs of children and young people. Furthermore, the proposal uses green structure as a tool for cohesion and resilience. The design process is based on “analysis through synthesis” and Girot’s Four Trace Concept, combining site analysis, sketching, and modeling.
The proposal introduces three spatial characters — the Pine Glade, the Meadow, and the Woodland Grove — interconnected by structured paths. It illustrates how landscapebased urbanism can support ecological, social, and climate goals in future city planning
How do we communicate with the Baltic Sea’s future?
There is an increased recognition towards the need to engage multitudinous social groups in conversations and action about the environment. Amongst the objectives of environmental communication research is to study the implications behind who communicates, to whom, through what practices, intention, and perceived impact. This thesis explored the perspectives of science communication practitioners towards youth, and their approaches to youth-focused communication. The Baltic Sea was chosen as an area of study. Young people in this region should have opportunities to boost their climate literacy and build competencies in the context of the region’s cross-cutting environmental challenges. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was conducted to uncover practitioners’ views on three approaches: one-way, two-way, and multidirectional communication within the youth setting. This thesis found that practitioners are motivated to seek out young people to involve in Baltic Sea-topics, having cited platforms such as schools and social media that helped them reach this social group. In their narrations, the practitioners made it evident that they aspire to give youth their own agency to propose science communication activities that meet their needs. This led them to favour approaches to communication with elements of interaction. The practitioners saw value in diversifying their environmental communication work through the inputs of youth. Inclusive and relevant science communication that positioned young people as equals rather than passive recipients was hoped to incentivise them to get engaged and stay engaged in environmental topics for as long as possible. Youth were seen as the future inhabitants of the Baltic Sea Region who could be equipped with skills and knowledge already now to learn how to contribute to the future of the Baltic Sea’s environmental wellbeing. When the time comes to taking over the mantle from the current generation, this future generation was aspired to be prepared to become the next decision-makers, researchers, and stewards of the sea. Such large hopes appeared to drive practitioners’ motivations to facilitate youth-focused science communication. Against this background, the emphasis on two-way and multidirectional approaches was understandable, with consideration towards the perceived benefits for youth to learn through doing “real” things that maintain their engagement and create room for their continued involvement
Institutional roles, challenges, and opportunities to coexistence in managing human-primate conflict in Sri Lanka
Human-Primate Conflict (HPC) has become an increasing challenge in Sri Lanka. This study provides deeper understanding of how government stakeholders interact in managing this issue. The study examine the perceptions and roles of key government stakeholders involved in HPC managing efforts, and aiming to discover both institutional enablers and challenges. By conducting semi-structured interviews with eight participants from five different government agencies, the research applies Daniels and Walker’s Progress Triangle framework to analyze stakeholder dynamics across three dimensions: Substance, Process, and Relationship. The study highlights how factors such as fragmented institutional responsibilities, communication breakdowns, and lack of trust impact the effectiveness of HPC management.
The findings highlight the varied stakeholder perspectives and varying levels of engagement and commitment in the HPC management process. Additionally, the result revealed the need of constructive, trust-based, and legitimate collaboration, where the management process is perceived as fair, and transparent by all parties involved. In conclusion, the study addresses for an integrated management system that not only balances conservation goals with community needs but also strategically builds trust, understanding, and shared objectives to improve long-term human-primate coexistence. Considering the study context, recommendations include establishing a coordinated institutional framework that enhances transparency and inclusivity
Taktisk stadsodling : småskalig stadsodling i ett omvandlande industriområde
As decaying industrial areas in European cities are redeveloped into mixed-use districts, often through top-down approaches, preserving their deeper cultural and social heritage while ensuring a smooth transition has become a key urban planning concern. Meanwhile, urban population growth, driving the demand for new construction, has deepened the disconnect between cities and agriculture, even as food security and sustainability face global threats. Understanding these challenges, this thesis explores the potential of small-scale urban agriculture through the lens of Tactical Urbanism in supporting these transitions, reshaping the general perception of these areas, while catalyzing experimentation and engaging the public. Defining the concept of Tactical Urban Agriculture through literature review and case studies, this thesis then applies it in the district of Gåsebäck, in Helsingborg, Sweden, through a desktop project, assessing its potential. The findings demonstrate that: (1) Tactical Urban Agriculture offers a cost-efficient framework for reconnecting agriculture and urban areas while rapidly increasing urban vegetation; (2) it similarly provides an adaptive and evolving strategy that supports transitional urban landscapes; (3) it fosters public involvement and social inclusion, revitalizing decaying spaces; and (4) it can effectively contribute to shift the general perception of an area, potentially leading it. By defining and applying Tactical Urban Agriculture as a tool supporting the revitalization of a decaying industrial district, this thesis bridges two seemingly distinct challenges and introduces a new approach to urban transformation while contributing to the ongoing discourse on urban agriculture. The research concludes by advocating for further studies on Tactical Urban Agriculture within other contexts as well as by emphasizing the need to implement and test the proposed project in Gåsebäck.När förfallna industriområden i europeiska städer omvandlas till blandstadsområden, ofta genom toppstyrda processer, har bevarandet av deras djupare kulturella och sociala arv samtidigt som en smidig övergång säkerställs blivit en central stadsplaneringsfråga.
The Ecological Role of Mosses in Green Roof Systems : A Systematic Review
Green roofs are widely used on urban infrastructure, valued for their roles in stormwater management, temperature regulation, and habitat provision. While most research has focused on vascular plants, particularly Sedum species, mosses (bryophytes) remain comparatively understudied despite their frequent presence and ecological potential on extensive green roofs. This systematic literature review synthesizes findings from 37 peer-reviewed studies to assess the functional role of mosses in green roof ecosystems. It addresses five research questions concerning moss establishment, interactions with substrate properties, hydrological performance, growth form differences (acrocarpous vs. pleurocarpous), and interactions with vascular vegetation. Results reveal that mosses are not only frequent colonizers but also modify substrate conditions by enhancing moisture retention, reducing erosion, and buffering temperature extremes. Their poikilohydric physiology enables high water-holding capacity and rapid rehydration, contributing significantly to stormwater management. Growth form emerged as a critical functional trait, with acrocarpous species dominating in dry, exposed environments, while pleurocarpous species perform better under stable moisture conditions. Moss-vascular plant interactions were found to be highly context-dependent, shaped by substrate, microclimate, and species traits. Despite growing interest in bryophytes on green roofs, gaps remain in trait-based species selection, long-term performance data, and experimental studies of plant-plant interactions. This review provides a foundation for more intentional integration of mosses into green roof design and calls for expanded research to optimize their ecological function and practical application
Increased use of Birch : a study on southern Swedish landowners view of changed forestry
This study investigates how the perception of birch as a forest tree has evolved within Swedish forestry, with a particular focus on its role in a more diversified and climate-adapted forest landscape. The study also aims to analyze attitudes within the forestry sector toward planting improved birch. Through qualitative interviews with landowners and advisors, perceptions of birch's ecological, economic, and social values are examined. The results show that birch is increasingly seen as a strategically important species for enhancing climate resilience, risk reduction, and ecosystem functions. At the same time, several obstacles to wider adoption are identified, both for naturally regenerated birch and for planted improved material. These include high browsing pressure from wildlife, a limited market infrastructure, and cultural norms within forestry. The study also highlights the need for improved knowledge, transfer and clearer incentives from both advisors and industry. The conclusion is that birch holds significant potential in future multifunctional forestry, but realizing this potential will require a systematic and long-term strategy
Inbreeding, genetic drift and selection are key forces that shape the genetic architecture of
domestic cattle populations. This study investigates the genomic consequences of these forces by
analysing runs of homozygosity (ROH) in both simulated and empirical data from Swedish native
breeds (Fjäll, Rödkulla and SRB) and international breeds such as Holstein and Jersey. ROH
defined as continuous stretches of homozygous genotypes, serve as genomic markers of
inbreeding and selection and offer insights into both recent and ancient demographic processes.
Simulations were conducted using msprime to model historical population structures, and ROH
were detected using PLINK in both simulated and empirical data. The results revealed distinct
ROH patterns between native and commercial breeds. Swedish native breeds exhibited several
short ROH segments, consistent with historical bottlenecks and small effective population sizes. In
contrast, Holstein and Jersey cattle showed fewer but longer ROH segments, indicating more
recent inbreeding due to intensive selection.
ROH islands, genomic regions consistently homozygous across individuals, were identified in
both data types and further investigated for gene content. These regions might display selection for
traits like disease resistance, environmental adaptability and fertility.
This demonstrates the value of ROH analysis in revealing the demographic and selective histories
of cattle populations. It provides with insights for the preservation of rare breeds and the
management of breeding programs
Dog behavior in relation to the owner’s mental health, stress, and personality. : a study of the veterinary nurse’s advisory role in behavior-related issues
Studies from various parts of the world show that behavioral problems are common among pet dogs, which often leads owners to seek veterinary care. To provide the right care and advice, it is important to understand the reasons behind the dog’s behavior. These problems can be caused by illnesses or physical pain, but they can also be a way for the dog to express emotional and social needs. Veterinary nurses play an important role in communicating with dog owners, and having good knowledge in this area is essential to give correct and personalized advice.
According to the Swedish Public Health Agency, mental health problems and stress are increasing in society. This can lead to health issues such as sleep problems, anxiety, and effects on different parts of the body. Because of this, mental health has received more attention in healthcare, with efforts to improve care and reduce the stigma around seeking help. However, challenges remain, including long waiting times and uneven access to services in different parts of Sweden. In 2025, preventing mental health problems is a high priority for the Swedish government, which has allocated more funds to support this work.
Research shows that there is a biological connection, both physical and emotional, between dogs and their owners. Dogs can sense and reflect their owners’ emotional states, and they are also influenced by their owners’ personalities, which tend to stay fairly stable over time. The aim of this study was to explore whether there are links between the owner’s mental health, stress, and personality traits, and behavioral problems in their dogs. This study used data from the ongoing long-term survey “Mitt liv med hund” (MLMH; “My Life with Dogs”), which looks at factors affecting the well-being of both people and dogs. The results showed connections between the owner’s mental health and stress and the dog’s behavioral problems. The study also found links between certain personality traits of the owner, such as extraversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism, and the dog’s behavior. These findings show that this is a complex topic and that more research is needed to understand these relationships better.
For veterinary nurses, it is valuable to have knowledge in this area, as there is growing evidence that the owner’s well-being is connected to their dog’s behavior. It is important to develop skills to handle difficult conversations, such as those about behavioral problems and lifestyle changes, to better support both dog owners and their pets
Body condition, health status and physical activity in Swedish dogs
aktivitetsvanor bland svenska hundar.Overweight in dogs is an increasing problem both globally and nationally, with approximately half
of the world's dogs being classified as overweight and 30 % of dogs in Sweden affected.
Overweight can lead to several health issues such as orthopedic diseases and respiratory and
metabolic disorders. It can also lead to a shortened lifespan. Physical activity plays an important
role in preventing overweight. Research has shown that dogs who are exercised less than once a
day or have shorter periods of activity are at a higher risk of becoming overweight. Studies have
also shown a connection between overweight in dogs and their owners, indicating that the owner's
lifestyle affects the dog's health. International studies show that certain dog breeds require more
exercise, which influences how active their owners are. A connection between dog owners of
hunting-related breeds and a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases has also been shown.
This study includes a literature review of previous research in the field as well as an analysis of
data from the survey "Health and Lifestyle Habits of Swedish Dog Owners," which is part of the
doctoral project “U Can Move.” The questionnaire consisted of a total of 102 questions related to
health and lifestyle habits of both dog owners and dogs. In this study, 14 of these questions were
used, all concerning demographic aspects of the dog, such as breed, gender, and purpose, as well
as the owner's self-assessed body condition, health, and activity status of the dog. The results are
based on 618 survey responses from a randomly selected sample of 2000 dog owners. According
to the survey responses about the dogs' body condition and health, a large majority of dog owners
rated their dogs as having a normal weight and a good or very good health status. The survey
responses related to activity habits for dogs and dog owners showed that, on average, Swedish
dogs were estimated to be active for 200 minutes per week (combining everyday activity with
physical activity, x2), the majority of which was in the form of everyday activities such as walks.
Nearly 1/4 of dog owners also participated in some form of dog sport. The survey responses also
showed that dogs' activity levels differed depending on their breed group, with a statistically
significant difference in the number of activity minutes between the different breed groups. A
difference in activity levels was also observed between breed groups that were considered more
health-promoting for the dog owner, according to previous studies, in comparison with other breed
groups.
Since this study relies on self-assessed responses from the dog owner, the answers may vary
depending on the owner's knowledge level about body condition scoring and health status. The
reported activity levels are also self-assessed and may differ from actual activity. Furthermore,
there may be multiple owners who perform activities with the dog that are not included in the
responses. Further studies are required that use more objective measurement methods and include
a larger sample of different breed groups for a more accurate picture of health and activity habits
among Swedish dogs
