    Djurvälfärdsindikatorer i svensk grisproduktion

    Sweden's pig production is regulated by legislation that sets high standards for animal welfare. As a result, Swedish pigs generally have a high level of animal welfare. Currently, there is no welfare assessment tool specifically adapted to Swedish pig production. This thesis was part of the project "Ask the Pig", which aims to develop a welfare tool tailored for Swedish pig production and to be used for advisory and benchmarking purposes. The aim of the thesis was to quantify and describe the variation in animal-based welfare indicators in Swedish pig production. The study included data from 27 commercial pig farms in Sweden, which were assessed as medium to large in herd size. Data were collected from welfare assessments conducted between July 2022 and September 2023. 11 animal-based welfare indicators were evaluated on-site, either at unit, pen, or sow level, depending on the indicator. The assessments were carried out across all sow unit types (farrowing, gestation, and mating). The results show that almost all of the indicators included in the study could be observed at least once during the farm assessments. The findings revealed substantial difference between farms in the prevalence of most of the examined indicators and identified associations between the indicators that could be of practical relevance. The study demonstrates that there is room for improvement in animal welfare on Swedish pig farms and that all the indicators assessed in the study should be included in a future welfare assessment tool. Future research of interest is to investigate the factors underlying the observed variation, as well as the general associations between welfare indicators

    Choice of localization for intramuscular injections with sedative drugs in dogs : a survey study

    Intramuskulära injektioner används ofta inom veterinärmedicin eftersom flera läkemedel kräver denna administrationsväg för att uppnå optimal effekt, samt för att sederande läkemedel ska verka snabbare. Studier på både hund och människa har dock visat att intramuskulära injektioner ofta hamnar subkutant eller i fascialplan. Vid intramuskulär injektion föreligger även en risk för oavsiktlig injektion i större blodkärl eller i närliggande nerver. Exempelvis finns det rekommendationer om att injicera i musculus (m.) quadriceps femoris i stället för i m. biceps femoris eftersom detta minskar risken för skador på nervus (n.) ischiadicus. Med detta i åtanke blir det viktigt att ha kunskap om vilka muskler som bör injiceras för att minimera feladministrering. Även smärtreaktionen från injektionen är något som ska minimeras för att jobba i linje med djurskyddslagen. Kandidatarbetet utfördes i syfte att undersöka vilka lokalisationer som är vanligast för intramuskulära injektioner med sederande läkemedel samt varför olika personer föredrar att injicera sederande läkemedel i olika muskler. En enkätundersökning samt en kortare litteratursammanställning utfördes för att ta reda på för- och nackdelarna med att injicera sederande läkemedel i olika muskler. Studier på hund visar både signifikanta resultat och icke signifikanta resultat på huruvida injektionens lokalisation påverkar sederingsdjup eller tiden till sedativ effekt. Injektioner i m. semimembranosus och cervikala epaxiala muskler på hund verkar kunna ge djupare sedering och en kortare tid till sedativ effekt i jämförelse med injektioner i m. gluteus och lumbara epaxiala muskler. Humanstudier har visat på att injektioner gjorda i m. deltoideus gav en högre plasmakoncentration av läkemedel jämfört med injektioner i m. gluteus. I studier på hund presenterades signifikanta resultat som visade att injektioner i m. triceps brachii och m. quadriceps femoris gav en större smärtreaktion än injektioner gjorda i cervikala epaxiala muskler. I en studie på gyltor observerades däremot en större smärtreaktion vid injektion i m. fascia lata, men denna muskel inkluderades inte i de studier som utförts på hund. Resultaten från enkätstudien visade att flest antal djursjukskötare, veterinärer och djurvårdare föredrog att injicera i m. quadriceps femoris vid injektioner med sedativa läkemedel på hund. Faktorn som främst bidrog till valet var enkelheten att palpera muskeln. Vidare visar resultatet från enkäten på att muskeln som hade sammanlagt högst procentandel på kategorierna minimera smärta, tid till sedering och lätt att palpera var m. supraspinatus. Resultatet indikerar på att injektioner i m. supraspinatus kan vara värt att studera i framtida studier.Intramuscular injections are commonly used in veterinary medicine as some medications have it as a preferred administration route, and sometimes it is used to achieve a faster onset, for example, with sedative drugs. However, studies on both dogs and humans have shown that intramuscular injections often end up subcutaneously or in fascial planes. There is also a risk of injecting medications into larger blood vessels and nerves with an intramuscular injection. For example, there are recommendations to inject into m. quadriceps femoris instead of m. biceps femoris to avoid damage to the sciatic nerve. Therefore, it is crucial to have knowledge of which muscles should be injected to minimize administration errors. The pain reaction from the injection is also something that should be minimized to align with animal welfare laws. This bachelor's thesis was conducted with the aim of investigating which locations are most common for intramuscular injections with sedative drugs and why different veterinary healthcare workers prefer to inject sedative drugs into various muscles. A survey and a brief literature review were conducted to explore the advantages and disadvantages of injecting sedative drugs into different muscles. Studies on dogs have reported both significant and non-significant findings considering the connection between the injection site and the depth of sedation or time to sedative effect. Injections with sedative drugs into m. semimembranosus and cervical epaxial muscles in dogs seem to provide a deeper sedation and a shorter onset of time when compared to injections into m. gluteus and lumbar epaxial muscles. Human studies have indicated that injections made into m. deltoideus resulted in higher plasma concentrations of the drug than injections into m. gluteus. Significant results were also observed in studies on dogs indicating that injections into m. triceps brachii and m. quadriceps femoris caused a greater pain reaction than injections into the cervical epaxial muscles. Injections into m. fascia lata showed a greater pain reaction in a study on pigs, however this muscle was not injected in any of the studies conducted on dogs. The results from the survey showed that the highest number of veterinary nurses, veterinarians, and animal care workers preferred to inject m. quadriceps femoris when administering sedative drugs to dogs. The factor that contributed most to the choice of muscle was the convenience of palpating the muscle. When analyzing several different reasons, it was found that the muscle with the highest percentage in the following categories: minimizing pain, onset of time, and convenience of palpation was m. supraspinatus. This may indicate that m. supraspinatus is a muscle worth investigating in further studies

    Strategier för biologisk bekämpning av trips i odlingssystem för jordgubbar : en litteraturöversikt

    Introduction: Thrips is one of the most common pests in strawberry crops worldwide that cause severe economic damage to flowers and fruits in strawberry crops. With rising temperatures due to climate change, negative impacts from pesticides on ecosystems and biodiversity, and increasing resistance among thrips species such as Frankliniella occidentalis there is an increasing urge to find efficient biological control strategies to control thrips infestations in strawberry crops in Sweden. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to explore current biological control strategies to control thrips in greenhouse and open-field strawberry cropping systems. Method: A structured literature search was conducted on April 25th, 2025, on Web of Science where 11 articles were extracted for further analysis for biological control method with result on thrips in crop, natural enemies, crop damage and yield that was compared. In addition, information of Swedish strawberry production, pests and biological control methods was collected from advisors via phone calls and one video meeting. Result: The results from this literature review reveals twelve different biocontrol agents in reducing thrips in open-field and greenhouse strawberry cropping systems such as release of predatory mites, the minute pirate bug (Orius spp.), damsel bugs (Nabis americoferus) and entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana. Several plant species such as Cyanus segetum, Echium vulgare, Chenopodium album, Capsicum annuum L., Lobularia maritima, Urtica urens, Lamium amplexicaule, Convolvulus arvensis, Sonchus oleraceous and Galega officinalis has proven to increase the presence of natural enemies for thrips. Ornamental pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) decreased the presence of thrips when planted adjacent to strawberry crops while ornamental pepper led to a reduction on crop damage. Conclusion: The findings from this literature review highlights some key research areas for development of biocontrol strategies for managing thrips in open-field and protected strawberry cropping systems in Sweden. The review offers a summary of the most updated scientific findings and can be used as a guidance for researchers, farmers and advisors. By combining different biological control strategies, there is potential to increase cost- benefits for farmers while reducing negative impacts on the ecosystem and human health in strawberry cropping systems.Inledning: Trips är ett av de vanligaste skadedjuren i jordgubbsodlingar världen över och orsakar allvarliga ekonomiska skador på blommor och frukter i jordgubbsodlingar. Med stigande temperaturer på grund av klimatförändringar, negativa effekter av bekämpningsmedel på ekosystem samt biologisk mångfald och ökande resistens bland tripsarter som Frankliniella occidentalis, finns det ett ökande behov av att hitta effektiva biologiska bekämpningsstrategier för att kontrollera tripsangrepp i jordgubbsodlingar i Sverige. Därför är syftet med denna avhandling att utforska biologiska bekämpningsstrategier för att bekämpa trips i jordgubbsodling i tunnlar, växthus och på friland. Metod: En strukturerad litteratursökning utfördes den 25 april 2025 på Web of Science där 11 artiklar extraherades för vidare analys av biologiska bekämpningsmetoder där resultat såsom effekt på trips i grödan, naturliga fiender, skador på grödan och avkastning jämfördes. I tillägg så inhämtades ytterligare information om biologiskt växtskydd och skadegörare i jordgubbsodling i Sverige från tre rådgivare via telefonsamtal och ett videomöte. Resultat: Resultaten från denna litteraturgenomgång visar att tolv olika biologiska bekämpningsmetoder reducerar trips i odlingssystem för jordgubbar på friland och i växthus genom frisättning av rovkvalster, näbbskinnbaggar (Orius spp.), fältrovskinnbaggar (Nabis americoferus) och entomopatogena svampar av arten Beauveria bassiana. Flera växtarter som Cyanus segetum, Echium vulgare, Chenopodium album, Capsicum annuum L., Lobularia maritima, Urtica urens, Lamium amplexicaule, Convolvulus arvensis, Sonchus oleraceous och Galega officinalis har visat sig öka förekomsten av naturliga fiender till trips. Förekomsten av trips minskade även när prydsnadspaprika (Capsicum annuum L.) och strandkrassing (Lobularia maritima) planterades intill jordgubbsodlingar, medan prydnadspaprika ledde till en minskning av skadorna på grödorna. Slutsats: Resultaten från denna litteraturöversikt belyser några viktiga forskningsområden för utveckling av biologiskt växtskydd för att hantera trips i odlingssystem för jordgubbar på friland och i skyddade odlingar i Sverige. Översikten ger en sammanfattning av de mest uppdaterade vetenskapliga rönen och kan användas som vägledning för forskare, jordbrukare och rådgivare. Genom att kombinera olika biologiska kontrollstrategier finns det potential att öka kostnadsfördelarna för jordbrukare och samtidigt minska de negativa effekterna på ekosystemet och människors hälsa i odlingssystem för jordgubbar

    Effects of feed choices on growth, health, incidence of diarrhoea and damaging behaviour during the weaning period of piglets

    The Swedish agenda 2030 promotes a more sustainable agriculture (Nilsson 2017). In that frame, agricultural research about animal behaviour, health and welfare is critical for reaching the evocated goals. In pig farming, one of the main health and welfare concerns occurs before and after piglets’ weaning (Kim et al. 2024; Wallgren et al. 2019; Westin 2004; Huting et al. 2021). This research aims to evaluate the effects of feed choice on health, weight gain, damaging behaviours and the incidence of diarrhoea before and after weaning. For this, an applied experiment has been performed at Funbo Lövsta farm, the experimental farm of the Swedish University of Agricultural sciences. Three groups of piglets were set: a choice group accessing five different feeds in five different playful feeders in an extra pen, a no-choice group accessing their usual creed-feed in a usual feeder in an extra-pen, and a control group raised according to conventional Swedish practices. Piglets from the choice and no-choice treatments could work for 2 minutes access to the extra-pens by pushing a weighed door. This was set progressively heavier with each experimental session day according to a fixed ratio (Kagel et al. 1995). They were driven back in their pen between these two-minutes exposition for refilling the feeders, and this was repeated 20 times. As soon as this task was done, piglets were exposed again to the treatment. 153 piglets from fifteen litters were included in this study, five litters per treatment groups. Data was collected manually, then stored on Microsoft Excel (2016) files. The statistical analyses were performed on Rstudio 4.4.2 (2024). Concerning damaging behaviour, certain kinds of skin lesions appear significantly less often within the choice and no�choice treatments compared to the control group. The hypothesis was: “The freedom of choice will promote growth and health during the weaning period, while reducing damaging behaviours”. In the results, damaging behaviour is the only point showing significative improvements with the treatment groups. For weights, the control group was the heaviest at weaning and at seven weeks old. Results do not allow to support the hypothesis. There could be more piglets included in this research because the experiment was not completed by the time of writing this thesis. Maybe including this last animal batch in the statistical sample could improve the significance of some results and making more stated conclusions

    Straw racks for finishing pigs : a comparative study of three different models

    Fria i sin naturliga miljö spenderar grisar största delen av sin vakna tid till att undersöka sin omgivning och leta efter föda. Tamgrisarnas beteende har inte nämnvärt förändrats och deras naturliga beteende är fortfarande jämförbart med vildsvinens. I våra moderna produktionssystem kan detta resultera i stora problem, lidanden och kostnader i de besättningar som inte arbetar förebyggande och underlättar för grisarna att kunna utföra sina naturliga beteenden. Halm har i flera studier visat sig vara en effektiv miljöberikning då halmen efterliknar de material grisen bökar, tuggar och äter i naturen. Ständig tillgång till halm förebygger och minskar förekomsten av svansbitning och andra onormala beteenden och är också ett lagkrav. Djurskyddskontrollerna noterar brister gällande strökvalitet och användning av halm vid ca 15% av kontrollerna. Halmhäckar kan bidra till att göra stallmiljön mer stimulerande och vara ett hjälpmedel för att kunna erbjuda grisarna ständig tillgång till ren halm. Denna studie är ett led i att kunna öka djurvälfärden inom grisproduktionen och utgör en pilotstudie i projektet ActPig vid Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet (SLU). Projektet arbetar med att utveckla en halmhäck som ska säkerställa tillräckliga halmgivor så att grisarnas beteendebehov tillgodoses utan att boxhygienen försämras. Syftet med studien var att genom beteendeobservationer jämföra tre olika modeller av halmhäckar för att försöka utröna vilken av dem som hade störst potential gällande ökad halmtillgång och möjliggörande av utforskande beteende. I studien undersöktes 54 grisar fördelade i 6 boxar som försetts med varsin halmhäck. De olika typerna av halmhäckar var en hängande halmhäck (korg), samt en liten och en stor vägghängd halmhäck. Varje typ av halmhäck förekom i två boxar och totalt studerades 18 grisar per typ av halmhäck. Grisarnas beteenden studerades under fyra dagar i samband med strötilldelningen i stallet. För de flesta beteenden noterades inga signifikanta skillnader mellan halmhäckarna. Störst potential bedöms den hängande halmhäcken ha då den visade högst andel utforskande beteenden av de tre modellerna. Den visade signifikans gällande bökande (p = 0,0504) jämfört med den lilla häcken men den gav minst halmmängd och behöver därför vidareutvecklas med avseende på att kunna ge ökad halmtillgång till grisarna.Free in their natural environment, pigs spend most of their waking hours exploring their surroundings and looking for food. The behaviour of domestic pigs has not changed significantly and their natural behaviour is still comparable to that of wild boars. In our modern production systems, this may result in a lot of problems, suffering and costs in herds that don´t work preventively and facilitate the pigs' ability to perform their natural behaviours. Straw has shown in several studies to be very effective environmental enrichment. Straw resembles the materials the pig roots, chews and eats in nature. Constant access to straw prevents and reduces the occurrence of tail biting and other abnormal behaviours and is also a legal requirement. The animal welfare inspections are noting deficiencies regarding straw quality and use of straw in about 15% of the inspections. Straw racks can help make the environment more stimulating and serve as a means to provide pigs with constant access to clean straw. This study is part of efforts to improve animal welfare in pig production and serves as a pilot study in the ActPig project at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The project aims to develop a straw feeder that will ensure adequate straw supplies so that the pigs' behavioural needs are met without compromising pen hygiene. The purpose of this study is to compare three different types of rack to find out which one has the most potential regarding increased straw availability and facilitating exploratory behaviour. The study examines 54 pigs distributed in 6 pens, each equipped with a straw rack. The different types of straw racks were a hanging straw rack (basket), as well as a small and a large wall-mounted straw rack. Each type of straw rack was present in two pens, with a total of 18 pigs studied per type of straw feeder. The pigs’ behaviours were observed over four days in the connection with the allocation of straw in the stable. For most behaviours, no significant differences were noted between the straw racks. The hanging straw rack was assessed to have the greatest potential as it displayed the highest proportion of exploratory behaviours among the three models. It showed significance regarding rooting (p = 0,0504) compared to the small rack but it provided the least amount of straw and therefore needs further development in terms of being able to provide increased straw access for the pigs

    Urban food forests with garden qualities : a design concept for municipally managed green spaces to enhance food security and equality in the City of Malmö

    Detta kandidatarbete syftar till att undersöka urbana matskogars potential som ett konkret verktyg för att möta flera av de mest akuta utmaningarna i dagens städer, såsom klimatförändringar, ökande förtätning, behovet av lokal livsmedelsförsörjning samt socialt och ekologiskt hållbar stadsutveckling. Detta görs genom en litteraturbaserad analys i kombination med ett gestaltningsförslag, i form av ett flexibelt och skalbart koncept för urbana matskogar, med växtval anpassade för odlingszon 1 i södra Sverige. Arbetet belyser frågor kopplade till designprinciper, projektinitiering, förvaltning, social jämlikhet i tillgången till gröna miljöer och vikten av att bevara och återaktivera kunskap om naturens ekosystem. Urbana matskogar framhålls som mångfunktionella landskapselement, där matproduktion kombineras med rekreation, lärande och social interaktion, vilket skapar förutsättningar för regenerativa och resilienta stadsmiljöer. Studien visar att matskogar, när de integreras i stadens gröna infrastruktur, kan bidra till förändrade beteenden, stärkt gemenskap och ett mer hållbart samhälle. Det föreslagna designkonceptet utgör ett inspirations- och kunskapsverktyg som kan stödja den gröna omställningen på lokal nivå och bidra till att framtidssäkra urbana miljöer för kommande generationer samt bidra till att uppfylla kommunala, nationella och globala hållbarhetsmål.This bachelor's thesis aims to explore the potential of urban food forests as a practical tool to address several of the most pressing challenges facing contemporary cities, such as climate change, increasing urban densification, the need for local food production, and the pursuit of socially and ecologically sustainable urban development. This is achieved through a literature-based analysis combined with a design proposal in the form of a flexible and scalable concept for urban food forests, featuring plant selections adapted to Sweden’s cultivation zone 1. The work highlights issues related to design principles, project initiation, management, social equity in access to green spaces, and the importance of preserving and revitalizing knowledge about natural ecosystems. Urban food forests are presented as multifunctional landscape elements where food production is integrated with recreation, learning, and social interaction- creating contitions for regenerative and resilient urban environments. The study shows that when food forests are integrated into urban green infrastructure, they can contribute to behavioral change, strengthen community ties and a more sustainable society. The proposed design concept serves as an inspirational and educational tool to support the green transition at the local level and help future-proof urban environments for coming generations while also aligning with local, national and global sustainability goals

    How different environmental factors affect the movement patterns of the reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata)

    Giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an iconic species in the fauna of Africa, who play a crucial role in the ecosystem. For the past three decades, giraffe populations have declined by 40% due to anthropogenic effects like, fragmentation, climate change and habitat loss. Understanding giraffes’ ecological impact and their behaviour is important for the conservation work. This study investigates how different environmental factors, like moon phase, precipitation and cloud cover, impact on reticulated giraffes’ (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) movement patterns and if it differs between day and night. The study was conducted in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya, by using camera traps deployed at wildlife corridors to photograph the movement of the giraffes. The weather data were obtained from public databases. 900 passages were registered during daytime and 390 passages during nighttime. The results indicated that all three environmental factors influenced giraffes’ movement patterns. A notable rise during first quarter and a decrease during new moon at night. At daytime giraffes’ movement increased with new moon and decreased during full moon. Low and moderate precipitation increased the giraffes’ movement the most, and high precipitation the least during the 60-days period. Low cloud covers increased movement and high cloud cover decreased movement. The findings demonstrate significant differences between certain environmental factors and the movement patterns of the reticulated giraffes. The goal of this study was to find patterns in the reticulated giraffes movement ecology, with the aim to increase knowledge and the understanding for giraffes and contribute to development of conservations strategies

    Multispektrala egenskaper hos älgspillning : identifierar nyckelfunktioner i pelletsgrupper med hjälp av drönarbilder

    Att övervaka älgpopulationer är viktigt för viltövervakningen. Det finns olika sätt att göra detta på och en av dem är traditionell spillningsinventering. Detta är en tidskrävande metod som är känslig för partiskhet, vilket understryker behovet av en skalbar metod som är mer objektiv. Denna studie utforskar potentialen i att använda fjärranalysverktyg, specifikt drönarbilder, för att upptäcka älgspillning. Fältdata samlades in i fyra unga tallbestånd i södra Sverige med hjälp av tre inventerare som spred ut sig opportunistiskt för att hitta spillning både från älg och rådjur. Spillningshögarna markerades och information om art och koordinater samlades in med hjälp av en högprecisions GNSS-enhet. Efter att markdata samlats in flögs en drönare (DJI Mavic 3M) över beståndet på 15 meters höjd. Drönarbilderna processades och det skapades polygoner runt de spillningshögar som gick att hitta i bilderna. En buffert skapades runt polygonerna för att kunna jämföra medelvärde och standardavvikelserna för spillningshögarna mot den omgivande vegetationen. Ett t-test visade att den omgivande vegetationen har en högre standardavvikelse i alla spektrala egenskapindex och ett högre medelvärde i alla spektrala egenskaper och vegetationsindex. Resultaten från denna studie kan bidra till framtida forskning som vill bygga en modell som är tränad för att upptäcka spillningshögar, vilket minskar fältarbetet och ökar objektiviteten i inventeringen. Även om metoden för tillfället är begränsad till unga skogsbestånd samt är väderberoende, skulle en sådan modell kunna ge insikt i älgpopulationens utveckling över tid genom att allmänt tillgänglig fjärranalysteknik.Monitoring moose populations is important for wildlife management. There are multiple ways to do this and one of them is traditional fecal pellet surveys which are time-consuming and prone to observer bias, underscoring the need for more objective and scalable methods. This study explores the potential use of remote sensing tools, specifically drone imagery, to detect moose fecal pellet groups. Field data were collected in four young pine stands in southern Sweden where three surveyors opportunistically spread out to find fecal pellet groups (moose, roe and red deer). The pellet groups were marked and information about species and coordinates were recorded using a high- precision GNSS device. After the ground data were collected, each stand was surveyed with a DJI Mavic 3M at an altitude of 15 meters. The images from the drone were processed and the pellet groups found in the imagery were polygonized in QGIS. A buffer was created around the polygons to be able to compare the mean value and standard deviation of the fecal pellet groups to the surrounding vegetation. A t-test showed that that the surrounding vegetation has a higher standard deviation and a higher mean value in all spectral bands and vegetation indices. The results from this study can contribute to future research in building a model that is trained in detecting fecal pellet groups, thereby reducing field effort and increasing survey objectivity. While currently limited to young forest stands and by weather dependency, this type of model would be able to create insight in moose population trends over time using commonly available remote sensing technologies

    How can welfare be ensured? : a study on sharks in captivity

    Sharks are a diverse group of animals that have evolved over the past 400 million years, leading to a complex set of needs. Due to overexploitation and shark finning the wild populations are threatened and the need for effective housing and conservation methods is significant. This study aims to investigate how the welfare of sharks can be ensured within animal husbandry, the Swedish animal welfare legislation, the work of aquariums as well as other conservation measures, such as the possibility of commercial breeding. The study found literature supporting that animal husbandry was globally equal, although noting some differences due to the need for individual and species adaptations. The Swedish animal welfare legislation was perceived as inadequate, even from the perspective of Swedish aquariums. Some regulations were contradictory, and words like ‘suffering’ and ‘welfare’ lacked definitions. Besides maintaining good animal husbandry, aquariums could use food- or olfactory enrichment to improve the welfare of sharks in captivity. Likewise, an interest in education and initiatives, that work to enhance the impressions of sharks and the issue with shark fishery, can improve the public’s view and knowledge, thus enhancing welfare in the long run. The study did not find any implications that commercial breeding would succeed, possibly due to the long generation times and low fertility in sharks. However, internationally regulated fishing legislation could contribute to the conservation of shark species. In contrast, jurisdictional problems are expected due to ethical dilemmas, such as the economy and welfare of small-scale fishing communities. In conclusion, good animal husbandry, improved research-based legislation, and aquariums’ commitment to educate the visitors and support initiatives can improve the welfare of sharks. By successfully keeping sharks in aquariums, visitors’ interest can increase, thus strengthening initiatives for the conservation of wild shark populations

    When is an animal welfare complaint justified? : a study of reports submitted to the County Administrative Board of Jönköping in 2024

    To ensure proper animal welfare in Sweden, the county administration boards (CABs) serve an important role through enforcing regulation and performing inspections. Resources need to be divided on both routine and complaint inspections in a way that generates the most benefit. This means avoiding placing said resources on inspections that are deemed unnecessary. This study was performed to assist the CAB in Jönköping in prioritising complaints through finding potential patterns between complaints and whether they were legitimate or not. From the Jönköping CAB 126 complaints along with respective inspection reports were gathered, all of which had led to a physical inspection in 2024. These were organised and points of interest such as level of detail, kind of animal, number of animals and anonymity was compared to outcome. The results showed no concrete connections based on individual parameters, but that individual factors such as specific animal species, are more common in specifically legitimate or illegitimate reports. The number of anonymous complaints (in percentage) was about the same regardless of outcome, which indicates that anonymity most likely is not an indicator of any specific outcome. Why complaints were deemed illegitimate in their report was also investigated. It was found that a minority of the illegitimate reports were entirely unfounded, while the majority had some form of justifiability or that no actual control and/or inspection could be performed.
