Smart Energy Management for Concert & Conference Venues in Uppsala
As global energy demand continues to rise so does the urgency to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards more sustainable energy solutions. In Sweden the building sector accounts for approximately 40 percent of the country’s total energy consumption, identifying the mayor need for improvements. This report investigates the potential energy optimization measures for Uppsala Concert and Congress Hall (UKK) after 18 years in operation. The aim of this project is to identify potential energy saving actions, investigate the possibility of implementing local energy production as well as recovering internal energy. The focus is on solutions that att technically feasible and economically viable within the scope of the planned renovation.
The study investigates various energy measures for Uppsala Konsert and Kongress. The results show that implementing new more modern teqniques such as replacing current lightning with LED solutions, implementing dynamic demand controlled ventilation (DCV) and implementing solar shading show high energy savings. Implementing solar panels can generate around 187 MWh/year, but is somewhat limited by the main fuse capacity, and window improvements such as adding an extra panel or replacing them with energy efficient windows can reduce heat losses by up yo 40 percent. Storing waste heat from concerts with thermal energy storage such as tanks and phase change materials offers limited impact, however such systems could help reduce peak loads. However heat recovery from ventilation air in the kitchen has higher potentiall. The most effective measures were idetified as improved window insulation, demand controlled ventilation as well as replacing lightning with LED solutions and implementing solar shading. In summary, a well-considered combination of these actions can contribute to both energy effecient and sustainable building operations
Factors affecting winter survival in ley with a focus on harvesting strategy : a literature review
The ongoing climate change has led to an extended growing season in Sweden. Between 2011 and 2024, the growing season was on average 11 days longer compared to 100–150 years ago. The temperature increase has primarily occurred during winter and spring, resulting in fewer and shorter cold periods. Winter is a critical period for Swedish leys, as they are at risk of suffering winter damage. This decreases the persistence and increases the need for resowing, which in turn leads to higher costs in terms of both time and money. The aim of this literature review is to enhance the understanding of how different factors influence the overwintering of ley. Ley covers the largest agriculture area in Sweden, and in order to survive the winter and resume growth in spring, stored reserves are crucial. These reserves consist of carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds. During autumn, the hardenings process begins in response to decreasing temperatures and shorter days. This process involves several physiological changes that increase the plants´ resilience to low temperatures. Despite this, ley can still suffer from winterkill damage, which can be classified as either biotic or abiotic.
Several factors affect the overwintering of ley, including the timing of the last harvest, the number of harvests, grazing, stubble height, fertilisation, and climate conditions. The results indicate that there is a critical period where harvesting is unsuitable, most often occurring in September. The period is associated with the cessation of plant growth, though the exact timing of its end varies by year and location. However, both early and late harvesting have advantages and disadvantages. An early harvest can increase the risk of severe infections by overwintering fungi due to a higher amount of dead plant material. On the other hand, the remaining biomass can act as insulation and protect the growing point from cold spells. A late harvest, however, can cause soil compaction, as heavy machinery operates on wet ground. Taller stubble, decreased nitrogen fertilisation, and increased potassium fertilisation have been shown to promote the overwintering of ley. At the same time climate change is expected to further affect the conditions for overwintering. Warmer autumns result in the hardening process occurring at shorter day lengths and thus at a lower photosynthetic activity, which may lead to reduced frost tolerance.
There is a need for continued research in this field, as many of the studies forming the basis of current recommendations are outdated and do not account for the ongoing climate changes. In order to provide farmers with relevant and up-to-date recommendations, further studies are needed to investigate how ley is affected by changing farming conditions
Acetate-enriched substrates for enhanced methane production in anaerobic systems
A transition in the current energy system is needed for multiple reasons. For example, fossil fuels are depleting and have a major impact on the climate. A shortage of renewable ener-gies, under and over production at peak times are examples of the challenges the indus-try/research are facing today. Current research shows that Hydrogen can be a component to renewable energy integration, and thus a positive component in the energy transition towards a sustainable and stable power supply. However, producing hydrogen requires large amounts of electric energy, but can’t be easily stored.
To facilitate transportation and storage, hydrogen can be converted into organic acids. Pri-marily acetic acid with a process that incorporates carbon dioxide and hydrogen in a trickle-bed reactor. It is known that acetic acid plays a key role in biogas plants, where it contrib-utes to methane generation. This thesis explores the conversion of hydrogen into organic acids under different environmental conditions to identify the factors that achieve the high-est production rates. The resulting liquid product is then tested as a substrate in a biogas reactor, and its impact on gas production is compared with that of two reference reactors.
Through the analytical methods used in this research—including measurements of volatile fatty acids, gas composition, gas flow, temperature, and pH—it was shown that, at its peak, the trickle-bed reactor achieved an acetic acid concentration of 12.4 g/L with a maximum production rate of 3.83 g/L per day. The process performed better at higher pH values around 9 compared to lower pH values around 6. Using this acetate substrate, methane gas production in the biogas reactor was 36% higher than in the reference system over one retention time. The results show that higher pH levels in the trickle-bed reactor improve the conversion of hydrogen to acetic acid and increase methane production, supporting its use in microbial Power-to-Gas solutions and as renewable energy storage
Recent developments in the field of genetics have enabled the easy identification of individuals carrying known genetic defects, even in the absence of phenotypic expression. One such defect, known as gonadal hypoplasia, has affected the Swedish Mountain Cattle since the start of the 20th century. Gonadal hypoplasia is a defect characterized by small, underdeveloped gonads, often resulting in impaired reproductive function and fertility. The defect has been associated with homozygosity of a ~500 kb region on bovine chromosome 29. This region, known as the Cs29 allele, has also been linked to the colour-sided phenotype which is characteristic of the breed. This correlation together with earlier decisions to favour the colour-sided animals likely explains both the initial increase in gonadal hypoplasia and its continued presence within the breed today.
The aim of this study was thus to evaluate potential breeding strategies against hereditary gonadal hypoplasia to ascertain how the frequency of the disease-associated allele, and the number of hypoplastic animals can be decreased while maintaining genetic diversity of this vulnerable local breed. To achieve this, the project focused on three objectives. 1) Develop a simulation of a deleterious genetic variant under balancing selection, resembling the Cs29 allele in Swedish Mountain Cattle. 2) Simulate and evaluate alternative breeding strategies against gonadal hypoplasia, using phenotypic and genetic testing. 3) Evaluate the impact of the various breeding strategies on the effective population size (Ne) in the simulations.
The results show that, compared to the current policy of phenotypic selection, strategies utilising genetic information to facilitate selection against the defect appear better suited to reduce both the frequency of the deleterious allele and the frequency of affected animals. However, the results also highlight clear trade-offs between reducing the prevalence of gonadal hypoplasia and two other critical aspects: namely preserving the breed’s genetic diversity and limiting the amount of genetic testing required to achieve the reduction
Stor löpmagsmask hos svenska får : sammanställning av två decennier av diagnostik
The aim of this quantitative study was to compile and map the Swedish Haemonchus contortus data from sheep to compare with temperature, precipitation and hours of sunshine as well as with a compilation of the earlier decade (2005-2014). The key findings of this study are that the prevalence of H. contortus has decreased between the last two decades although there are significant differences between some years. There was also a decrease in the number of sheep, an increase in the number of tests being sent in for diagnosis and overall no difference in the number of sheep holdings. The results further show no correlation between prevalence and temperature, precipitation and hours of sunshine, much like the findings of the earlier decade. The results also show a geographical spread of H. contortus in Sweden with time. These findings show a need to analyse this kind of data in greater detail, as annual means might not give accurate or true results. In other words, the number of parasites cannot be determined using only annual weather means. On the other hand, visualising the geographical spread using coordinates proved to be an effective method to show possible H. contortus spread. Further research into how detailed weather data needs to be established for making accurate correlations could be crucial to determine the impact on future prevalence
Microbial characterization of Kombucha during brewing and storage : a comparison of luxury Kombucha, home-brewed and commercialized
Kombucha is a fermented, slightly acidic drink that has been consumed since 220 BC. It has gained much popularity worldwide, in recent years, partially because of its benefitial microroganisms and its potential health benefits. Although the microbial community in Kombucha is diverse and varies between products, the main composition entails of acetic acid bacteria and yeasts, lactic acid bacteria.
This study aims to characterize the composition of Kombucha; investigating Kombucha products from three different brands and using samples taken at different points of a homemade fermentation. With the variety of samples, an observation was done to understand if pasteurization and storage affect the microbial activity and composition.
The main samples were taken from Källsjö Kombucha brewery, which requested to investigate three different vintages of two different Kombucha flavours; Sencha and Oolong. Comparatively, two commercialized Kombuchas, Humm and Renee Voltaire, were also studied. Furthermore, the brewery was also interested in analyzing the difference in the composition of one of their pasteurized bottles. The method used was isolating colonies for DNA amplification and sequencing to identify the yeasts and bacteria. For a better comprehension of the Kombucha composition, organic acids, ethanol, and glucose were measured with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
The microbial activity in the different vintages of Sencha Kombucha, showed that the oldest vintage had the least microbial activity and diversity compared to younger products. Surprisingly, the Oolong vintage from 2022 showed the most microbial activity. Ethanol levels were lowest in the commercial Kombuchas. There was not much difference in the ethanol levels between pasteurized and unpasteurized. During the brewing process, the activity appeared to be the highest on days four and five, specifically in the selective media for yeast. It was apparent that there was little change in the glucose levels during the fermentation, whereas the acetic acid and ethanol increased with time. No lactic acid was found. In the Källsjö Kombucha, the dominant yeasts identified were Brettanomyces anomalous and Brettanomyces bruxellensis.
The temporary and active park : a design proposal for a park in Gåsebäck i Helsingborg
Temporary landscape architecture has gained increasing importance in urban environments in recent years. This approach can enhance the use of public spaces and redefine their character and function. In this project, temporary interventions are viewed as a complementary tool to traditional urban planning, enabling rapid implementation and the opportunity to test ideas at full scale.
In this work, we have explored temporary landscape architectural spaces and elements in urban context, which have culminated in a proposal for a temporary park in Gåsebäck, Helsingborg. The goal has been to create a green and creative meeting place that can eventually evolve into a permanent park. Gåsebäck is an area with cultural potential and social challenges, where the City of Helsingborg aims to develop a safe, attractive and green neighborhood by 2035.
The proposal is based on communication with the City of Helsingborg, a literature review, reference projects with associated interviews and an iterative design process where reuse, accessibility and activity have been central themes. The park is designed according to the concept of a “patchwork”, in which reused materials and varied structures are woven together into a cohesive whole. Various activities, such as skateboarding and painting have been integrated into the park to meet the needs of the target audience. In addition, naturalistic plantings and trees in ”air-pots” will be placed throughout the site to create green environment with visual focal points. To attract visitors to the park, a complementary proposal includes strategically placed trees and signage throughout the Gåsebäck area
Life cycle assessment of charcoal : a comparative analysis between traditional and modern production and usage of charcoal in Ethiopia and Kenya
Charcoal is one of Kenya and Ethiopia’s most important fuels, as it enables cooking for a majority of their populations. Burning charcoal produces less smoke and particulate matter than wood, making it more suitable for use indoors and densely populated areas. Charcoal also has a higher energy density than wood and can be a carbon-neutral product if manufactured properly. However, illegal logging of natural forests can lead to sustainability problems for charcoal. A life cycle assessment (LCA) and an energy and mass flow analysis has therefore been carried out to investigate and understand the energy and environmental problems and opportunities that charcoal presents.
This report examines the climate impact, land use and acidification of producing a meal for five people cooked with charcoal from different systems. Charcoal is produced via pyrolysis of biomass which can be harvested either from natural forest where there is no replanting, or from plantations where replanting takes place after each harvest. The LCA examines the environmental impact from four different pyrolysis kilns; a traditional Earth mound kiln, a Casamance, a Green Mad Retort (GMDR) and a Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) steel kiln. Each method is analyzed; with and without briquette production, where charcoal dust is utilized together with soil.
The results show that the most important climate related factor for charcoal is sustainable forest management. The results indicate that the environmental impact per meal is inversely proportional to the yield from the plantation, and that the emissions of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2eq) per meal decreases linearly as larger parts of natural forests regrow. The utilization of charcoal dust to produce briquettes resulted in a reduction in all environmental impact categories. This reduction is correlated with the proportion of charcoal dust produced in each pyrolysis method. Additionally, the results show trends that better developed pyrolysis techniques do not only produce less emissions but are also more efficient. MRV-steel kilns resulted in the lowest environmental impact in all categories and can therefore be considered the best alternative for charcoal production from an environmental perspective. A sensitivity analysis suggests that the number of times the pyrolysis kilns and cooking equipment are used has a minimal impact on the environmental impact per meal due to the relatively small amount of charcoal used per meal compared to the amount of charcoal that the equipment handles during its lifetime. Furthermore, the results suggest that the transport distance affects both the emissions of acidifying substances and greenhouse gases proportionally to how much the distance changes but has no considerable impact on land use per meal.
An energy and mass flow analysis, accounting for the energy input and energy content of the charcoal, shows that the efficiency of the transfer of energy in biomass to the energy used when cooking is 32%, 44%, 46% and 53% with charcoal produced using an Earth mound kiln, Casamance, GMDR and MRV-steel kiln respectively. At these efficiencies, each kiln produces enough charcoal for 71, 98, 101 and 118 meals per 100 kg of biomass, respectively. MRV-steel kiln can therefore be considered the best option for charcoal production from an energy perspective. The MRV-steel kiln shows the greatest potential for the production and use of tar and flue gases
The Role of Gr5 in Regulating Sugar Feeding in the Yellow Fever Mosquito Aedes aegypti : comparative Analysis of Sugar Feeding Behaviour in Wildtype and ΔGr5 Aedes aegypti Using a Modified FlyPAD System
The sugar feeding behaviour of mosquitoes plays an essential role in their survival, reproduction, and vector competence. This project focuses on the role of the gustatory receptor gene Gr5 of Aedes aegypti in sugar detection. Understanding how mosquitoes assess and respond to different sugars can provide insight into the evolution of sugar receptors in Ae. aegypti and improve vector control strategies. In this project, a modified FlyPAD system was applied to access the feeding behaviour of two wildtype Aedes aegypti strains, Liverpool and Rockefeller, and a Gr5 gene knockout mutant, ΔGr5, when provided with sucrose, glucose, fructose and trehalose at a series of concentrations containing dye. The feeding dynamics were recorded and defined as different feeding events. Food imbibed was quantified using a spectrophotometer and dye-based standard curves. Results showed that both wildtype strains exhibited similar sugar feeding dynamics, with maximum feeding around 100 mM. In contrast, the ΔGr5 line demonstrated a marked reduction in feeding across all sugars, particularly sucrose and trehalose, and a lack of a significant dose response. The ΔGr5 line displayed altered feeding dynamics for sucrose and trehalose, shifting from a sip-driven pattern to a “burst-pause” pattern. Statistical analyses revealed that Gr5 knockout significantly disrupted the coordination of feeding parameters, especially for disaccharides.
The data suggest that Ae. aegypti Gr5 has a possible function of detecting disaccharides. And Gr5 might contribute to the formation of the Ae. aegypti gustatory receptor tetramer as a monomeric subunit. For a future step, crossing Ae. aegypti ΔGr5 with different Gr knockout mutant lines, followed by comparative feeding assays of sucrose, glucose, fructose, and trehalose, is expected to reveal further details of the sugar-detection function of the Gr5 receptor in Ae. aegypti
Preferred browsing of trees in European bison (Bison bonasus) - an observational study
The European bison (Bison bonasus) is an even-toed ungulate that lived wild in Sweden between 9,700 and 10,800 years ago. In 1927 the last wild bison was shot, but thanks to the extensive breeding program that began in 1923, there was in 2024 a total of 12 209 individuals of whom 9 762 are living in the wild. European bison is Europe`s largest living land mammal. The bison live in herds, that usually divides into mixed herds and bull herds. They are highly adaptable in terms of diet, but typically their diet consists of 80% ground vegetation and 20% woody plants. Bison have a significant impact on their environment, considering that they can consume up to 50 kg of food daily. They seem to prefer a varied woodland landscape.
The purpose of the study is to improve knowledge regarding the browsing preferences of bison, for a potential reintroduction of the species into the wild in Sweden. This will be achieved by answering the following question: Which naturally occurring Swedish tree species do bison prefer to browse?
The study was designed as a cafeteria-style study where scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), norway spruce (Picea abies), birch (Betula spp.), goat willow (Salix caprea), aspen (Populus tremula), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia), and alder (Alnus spp.) were provided at different stations to assess browsing intensity and activity. Browsing intensity was evaluated on a scale from 1 to 10 by taking photos before and then comparing them to photos taken 5 hours after access to the trees. Browsing activity was recorded for 90 minutes (1.5 hours) and then analysed using images taken every 10 minutes. The study was repeated ten times to obtain reliable data, which was compiled in Excel. To determine whether differences were statistically significant, a non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test followed by a post-hoc Dunn’s test was used to compare the tree species.
The results show that the bison browsed different tree species to varying degrees, and this variation was highly significant (p < 0.0001). There was a strong preference for goat willow, which was browsed significantly more than spruce (p < 0.0001), birch (p < 0.001), aspen (p < 0.0001), and rowan (p < 0.0001). Pine was also browsed more than spruce (p < 0.05), birch (p < 0.05), and aspen (p < 0.01). Lastly, alder was browsed more than both aspen (p < 0.05) and rowan (p < 0.05). In terms of browsing activity, tree species were visited at significantly different frequencies (p < 0.0001). Again, goat willow was the most frequently visited species, with significantly more visits compared to pine (p < 0.001), aspen (p < 0.0001), rowan (p < 0.01), and alder (p < 0.001). Birch was also visited significantly more frequently than aspen (p < 0.001).
The conclusions that can be drawn are that bison preferred goat willow, Scots pine, alder, and birch. These results partially align with previous research. The study has limitations due to its extent, such as animal group, environment and time frame (a short period in early spring). Nevertheless, it provides valuable Sweden-based knowledge about the European bison`s browsing preferences. This information is relevant to the discussion about reintroducing bison in Sweden. Further studies building on this one is necessary to obtain a representative picture of their potential impact on the Swedish forest ecosystem
