    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to investigate how different thinning intensities in a second-generation poplar plantation affect stump and root sucker regeneration in the third generation. The study was conducted at Sångletorp in Skåne County, where field measurements were taken from plots subjected to four different thinning treatments: Unthinned, light, moderate, and heavy thinning. Data were collected from a total of 16 plots, where the number of stump and root suckers, their height, diameter, and vitality were recorded. The statistical analyses used in RStudio included one-way ANOVA and the Kruskal-Wallis test to examine differences between the treatments. The results showed no significant differences between thinning levels regarding height, diameter, or number of shoots. A high proportion of dead shoots was discovered at the site, though the exact cause of this mortality remains uncertain. Possible explanations are discussed in the study. This is the first study to collect data from a third-generation poplar plantation in Sweden, and it provides preliminary insights into the potential for natural regeneration in such plantations. However, the question remains as to what caused the high mortality at the site—and whether it poses a risk to other plantations

How new residential construction affect housing prices

    Get PDF
This thesis examines how new residential construction affects housing prices in Sweden, distinguishing between owner-occupied and rental housing. Using panel data from 21 counties (2005–2023) and fixed effects regression models, the study finds that increased construction of owner-occupied units is associated with higher prices, likely reflecting that new supply is added where demand is already strong. Conversely, more new rental housing correlates with lower prices, suggesting a substitution effect between tenure types. The results are robust when controlling for population, income, education, and unemployment. However, the study also highlights that the relationship between supply and price is complex and context-dependent, influenced by local policies, demand factors, and market segmentation. Limitations include the use of aggregated data and challenges in establishing causality. The findings suggest that supply-side policies alone may not be sufficient for improving affordability; a balanced approach that includes measures to stimulate rental housing and considers local market dynamics is needed

Development of circularity indicators for regional Circular Nutrient Economy (CNE) evaluation

    Get PDF
Circular Economy (CE) and Circular Nutrient Economy (CNE) have garnered increasing atten-tion in both public discourse and scientific research over the past decades. The fundamental principle of CNE is to transition away from linear organic material flows by maximizing recycling and reuse while minimizing the reliance on virgin resource inputs and the disposal of unrecoverable organic waste. At the regional level, various indicators and methodologies have been developed to assess the extent to which CNE objectives are achieved, although there is yet no standardized set of indicators and neither consolidated agreement on what CNE objectives entail. The primary aim of this study was summarizing existing literature on CNE concepts and Circu-larity Indicators (CIs) relevant to CNE mass flows at the regional scale. Secondly, this research sought to synthesize and operationalize CNE concepts by developing a novel framework that incorporates key CNE objectives. Lastly, the study applied newly developed indicators to assess the CNE performance of four regional systems in Europe, facilitating a comparative analysis of the actual state of CNE objectives and their circularity performance. Despite the broad range of CNE goals identified in the literature, this study delineates three cri-teria for regional CNE objectives: (1) 4R framework, (2) the soil potential and biomass production limits of the region, (3) toxicity and regeneration at all system stages. The Phosphorus Output Circularity Index (POCindex) assesses criterium 1, ranking into classes the CNE benefits of the regions from A (high) to D (insufficient). Applied to Mass Flow Analysis (MFA) of Branden-burg, Denmark, Brussels-Capital, and Switzerland, all regions scored C, indicating rather low CNE performances. Criterium 2 was assessed via the Standard Livestock Unit deviation (SLUdev), re-vealing reliance on imported feed and insufficient marginal land for self-sufficiency in all four regions. Criterium 3 was evaluated by applying the share of organic phosphorus (P) inputs, which remained low (~10%), raising concerns about organic material safety. The POCindex, the organic P input share, and the SLUdev indicators rely on broad assumptions, literature-derived data, and simplified mathematical formulations. While these indicators provide new qualitative insights and facilitate assessments based on readily available mass flow data, their scientific robustness remains limited and other objectives of CNE, such as import dependen-cy, crop production, food waste reduction & reuse, or environmental impact, remain unaddressed. A key challenge identified in this study is the multidimensional nature of CNE concepts, which encompasses social, economic, global, and environmental dimensions. Future research should focus on identifying the most effective metrics and standardizing CNE evaluation methodologies to enhance the reliability and comparability of regional circularity assessments

    The Future of Agriculture

Issues related to food supply and food preparedness are increasingly relevant today due to the importance of maintaining food supply in Sweden during critical situations around the world. In times of war and crisis a stable and continuous domestic food production in Sweden is of the utmost importance. To ensure this, a higher percentage of young people needs to be established in the agricultural sector. There are challenges to achieving this goal due to barriers young farmers are facing, such as lack of capital and access to land. Government support targeted for young farmers may contribute to increasing the interest among young people in engaging in agriculture. This study aims to investigate whether the support for young farmers leads to an increase in the share of young farmers in beef production. To investigate this, panel data is used over all Swedish 21 counties over the period 2016 to 2024. The empirical analysis is based on Panel Vector Autoregression and Random-Effects Generalized Least Square. Results of the analysis indicate that the support for young farmers has a positive effect on the share of young farmers in Sweden. Yet, the findings in this analysis indicate that the youth unemployment rate is a more important factor in driving young people into the agricultural sector searching for employment. Furthermore, the results indicate that the support leads to an increase in beef production. This paper concludes that providing support to young farmers can play a significant role encouraging youth engagement in the agricultural sector. Moreover, such support has the potential to enhance and strengthen domestic food production and contribute to long-term food security

Validering av en hjärtfrekvensmätare för hästar

    Get PDF
In 2024, there were 14,400 trotters in training and 629 horses in training within thoroughbred racing in Sweden. These horses are elite athletes with high performance demands. In human exercise physiology, it is recommended to use training zones to design optimal training programs that prepare the individual for the work they are expected to perform. These training zones are often divided into zones based on heart rate. However, such well-defined training zones do not exist in the same way for horses, even though they are expected to perform close to their maxi-mum capacity during competition. A prerequisite for developing training zones for horses is the availability of accurate heart rate measurements. Accurate heart rate measurements are also useful for identifying arrhythmias and health issues in horses. Previous studies have validated heart rate monitors (HRM) for horses at rest and during light exercise, but no studies have been conducted for heart rates above 200 bpm. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the validity of a conventional HRM (Polar H10 heart rate sensor with the associated Polar Equine heart rate belt) for heart rates above 200 bpm. This was done by comparing the heart rate from the Polar HRM to the heart rate from the Gold Standard ECG (Televet 100, Jørgen Kruuse, Denmark) in standard-bred horses during training. Lin's CCC was 0.794873 for the entire dataset and 0.81761 for heart rates <100 bpm (Lin's CCC <0.9: poor agreement). The Bland-Altman plot showed a bias (M): -6.76 with ±1.96SD: 53.56 and bias (M): -4.29 with ±1.96SD: 40.12 for the entire dataset and heart rates <100 bpm, respectively. During the study, there were significant issues with maintaining good contact between the ECG equipment and the skin. Several electrodes detached from the skin, which made the data collected from the ECG clearly unreliable. Due to this, it is not possible to validate Polar’s HRM based on this study, nor can it be dismissed. If conventional HRM are validated in the future, it will be necessary to consider their accuracy and how this affects the potential uses

Utvärdering av diagnostik av Fasciola hepatica hos tackor

    Get PDF
The common liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, is an endoparasite with predilection site in the bile ducts and it can cause disease in several different mammals. The parasite has an indirect life cycle with freshwater snails as its intermediate host and often ruminants as its main host. The life cycle of F. hepatica benefits from a humid and mild climate and in Sweden it occurs mainly in the southern parts. An increased spread of the parasite can be expected because of climate change that causes warmer temperatures and shorter winters. Sheep are sensitive to infection and herds where the parasite occurs can suffer from acute illness, reduced production and financial loss. Diagnosis is usually made by detecting the parasite when slaughtering the animals or by fecal sampling where parasite eggs are detected by sedimentation. Another method that can be used for diagnosis is PCR. cELISA is diagnostic method that is primarily used in research, but according to the literature has a high potential in the field. The aim of this study is to compare sedimentation, PCR and cELISA as methods for diagnosing F. hepatica in ewes. A further aim is to examine farmers' routines regarding fecal sampling and deworming, as well as to examine the previous history of F. hepatica in their herds. Samples were collected from a total of 65 herds. From these, 105 pooled samples were ana-lyzed, where each pooled sample contained fecal samples from three individuals. The samples were analyzed by sedimentation, PCR and cELISA for the presence of F. hepatica. The test results from the different diagnostic methods were then compared using Cohen's kappa to calculate agreement. The result shows a strong agreement between sedimentation and PCR (κ = 0.72) and between PCR and cELISA (κ = 0.61). The agreement between sedimentation and cELISA is moderate (κ = 0.56). From this study, together with previous literature in the field, it is concluded that the use of cELISA in commercial diagnostics has good potential, especially as a supplemen-tary method to other diagnostics and for the detection of early infections. However, there is a risk of false negative test results when using cELISA alone when analyzing pooled samples, which indicates that it is probably not appropriate to replace sedimentation and PCR with cELISA. Furthermore, farmers' routines regarding fecal sampling and deworming as well as the herds' previous history of F. hepatica were investigated with a questionnaire study. The results shows that the farmers have a generally good knowledge of the parasite burden in their herds. The routines of a majority of those who participated is in accordance with the recommendations regarding fecal sampling and deworming

Ensiling of Sargassum for Biogas Applications

    Get PDF
Grenada, a small island nation in the southeastern Caribbean, faces challenges regarding energy dependency and environmental disruption from recurring Sargassum seaweed influxes. While Sargassum accumulation poses ecological and economic issues, it also offers the opportunity as renewable feedstock for biogas production via anaerobic digestion. Due to the seasonal nature of the sargassum, effective long-term preservation is critical to ensure year-round feedstock availability. This study evaluated the effects of different preservation methods, ensiling with or without silage agents, sugar supplementation, and varying dry matter contents, on the stability of Sargassum over an 8-week storage period. Key parameters such as pH, total solids (TS), and volatile solids (VS) were measured for six treatment groups. Additionally, a mathematical model was developed to estimate VS degradation over a six month period. The results showed that Sargassum ensiled at 30% DM with a silage agent (30DM) achieved the most favorable outcomes: a rapid pH drop to 4.4, lowest VS loss of 11%, and stable TS content. In contrast, untreated biomass (CTRL) exhibited the steepest degradation, with VS declining from 60% to 37% and a final pH of 5.8, indicating poor preservation. The predictive model shows an increasing divergence between treatments over time. The model predicted that the 30DM treatment would maintain VS levels around 48% after 26 weeks, while the CTRL group would drop below 33%. These findings highlight the potential of ensiling, particularly at 30% DM with additive, as a practical and scalable method for Sargassum preservation. Implementing such strategies can help stabilize biogas feedstock supply and support Grenada’s transition to a more sustainable energy system.Tänk dig att din lokala strand varje sommar täcks av ett brunt, illaluktande sjok av ruttnande tång.

Virulence and population structure in Neonectria ditissima, causative agent of European canker in apple

    Get PDF
This study investigated the virulence, pathogenicity, and population structure of Neonectria ditissima, the causative agent of European canker (EC) in apple. Twelve isolates were phenotyped for virulence and pathogenicity in a glasshouse assay using one-year-old 'Katja' apple trees. Significant differences in virulence were observed among isolates, with area under disease progression curve (AUDPC) values ranging from 58.66 to 4347.79. Disease incidence varied considerably among isolates and was strongly correlated with virulence (r = 0.85, p < 0.001). The estimated broad-sense heritability for virulence was remarkably high (H² = 0.98), indicating that variation in AUDPC was predominantly attributable to genetic differences between isolates. Population structure was analyzed using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers for 25 isolates and whole genome sequencing (WGS) data for 38 isolates. Principal coordinate analysis of SSR data suggested potential clustering patterns, though not clearly correlated with geographic origin or virulence. Principal component analysis of WGS data revealed clustering patterns related to both host of origin and geographic distribution. Isolates from Fagus hosts grouped closely despite diverse geographic origins, while isolates from different European regions showed distinct clustering patterns. Additionally, ITS sequencing of 46 isolates, including related Neonectria species, confirmed the species identity of the studied isolates and demonstrated the ability of ITS sequences to differentiate most Neonectria species except N. ditissima and N. major. This research provides valuable insights into the genetic diversity and virulence characteristics of N. ditissima, which will inform resistance breeding strategies for apple and improve understanding of host-pathogen interactions in European canker disease

    Get PDF
This study explores how site-specific differences in residential courtyards in Augustenborg,Malmö, can inform the development of microforests using native plant species according to the Miyawaki method. The research is part of the ongoing project Microforest in Residential Neighborhoods in Augustenborg, a collaboration between MKB Fastighets AB, Naturskyddsföreningen and SLU. The focus of this study is on how species composition and vegetation structure can be adapted to local site conditions within an urban context. Three residential courtyards were selected based on variations in wind exposure, orientation, and spatial design. Through site visits and literature review, species-specific planting suggestions were developed. Plant species were selected based on vegetation layers, ecological characteristics, and tolerance to different environmental conditions, with the goal of promoting biodiversity. The results show that local site conditions influence plant selection and species composition. In particular, the plant selection for one of the courtyards differed from the other two, demonstrating the potential for using native plant material to develop microforests on two distinct site types. The proposals illustrate how the character and expression of each site may vary depending on whether or not follow-up maintenance is implemented. The study concludes that microforests can initially be adapted to different site-specific residential courtyards or small spaces in urban environments, provided that species selection and composition are based on local and functional contexts. However, both time and evaluation are needed to determine whether the selected species compositions actually contribute to increased biodiversity (and local ecosystems), as well as to assess whether future management is necessary, depending on the microforest’s primary purpose at each site

Friends or foes? Gyrfalcon – Golden Eagle interactions in the Scandinavian Mountains

    Get PDF
Climate change, habitat loss and human persecution are threatening raptor populations globally, making science based conservation strategies essential to preserve healthy populations in the future. The importance of a multi-species or community approach in conservation is increasingly recognized, especially for species utilizing the same resources. However, in arctic and sub-arctic environments, extensive knowledge on factors affecting population dynamics of sympatric raptor species is limited. This exploratory study used over 20 years of monitoring data on gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) and golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) in the Swedish mountain region to analyse spatial and temporal trends of distribution and productivity of these two species in relation to environmental variables and interspecific presence. Two main questions were addressed; 1) How do fluctuations in prey populations, weather variables and topography of nesting sites affect the territorial occupancy and productivity of gyrfalcons and golden eagles? and 2) Do gyrfalcons and golden eagles affect each other’s territorial occupancy and productivity? Regression modeling and model selection based on Corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc) were used to identify key predictors. Results indicated that out of the environmental variables golden eagles seemed to be more affected by prey densities and gyrfalcons by spring weather conditions. A positive effect of interspecific presence was seen for golden eagle occupancy, while remaining tests of interspecific impact showed neutral effect. Limited or no significant effect in either direction for many of the models likely indicate that different factors act simultaneously and influence population dynamics in complex ways. Additionally, quality of the monitoring data varied across years, and results should be interpreted with caution. Future research should incorporate variables such as exposure of nesting sites and habitat characteristics of nesting territories, in addition to replication of the key analyses in this study to confirm the validity of the results. A more comprehensive monitoring of these species and ecosystem, and understanding built on it, will provide a stronger foundation to create targeted, multi-species conservation strategies in areas where climate and resource dynamics may change rapidly in the future
