Sustainable urban planning for a warmer climate : a study on the ability of plants to reduce heat stress in urban environments
The global climate change is an ongoing challenge with increased levels of greenhouse gases resulting in rising sea levels, frequent torrential rains, floods, periods of drought and heat waves. Due to the structure of urban environments, which in many cases are characterized by hard surfaces with a high capacity to absorb solar radiation, the city becomes a vulnerable and exposed location. In this study, factors affecting the temperature are presented, including average radiant temperature, air temperature and the Urban Heat Island effect, as well as how they affect the heat distribution in cities.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how vegetation can reduce the risk of heat waves and heat stress in urban environments. The study shows that green infrastructure has a significant impact on regulating temperature as vegetation contributes to evapotranspiration and shading, lowering the radiant temperature of a location. The work culminated in a design proposal for Mårtenstorget in Lund with the intention of implementing green infrastructure to increase the resilience of the city. A proposal with shade providing trees as the main element was developed with particular consideration given to species diversity, succession as well as adaptation to a dry, hot and sun-exposed growing site. The proposal is intended to be applicable to other urban squares and sites with similar conditions, in an effort to support the development of more climate-adapted cities in the future
The role of leadership in the development of an employer brand
In today’s changing environment, the ability to attract and retain the right talent is essential for organizations success and long-term survival. To achieve this, organizations must adopt employer branding strategies that communicate an attractive image of the workplace to various stakeholders. Employer branding is a dynamic, complex and ongoing process that requires collaboration throughout the organization. Despite its strategic importance, the development of a strong employer brand is often challenged by differences in internal leadership and evolving expectations from a younger generation. Furthermore, there is a lack of theoretical understanding of how employer branding is shaped in practice through interactions between leadership and other organizational actors within a specific organizational context.
This thesis aims to explore the role of leadership in the development of an employer brand through a case study of the consulting firm Accenture. The study employs a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews to investigate how leadership, as a co-creative process involving multiple actors, interacts with its organizational context.
The results indicates that leadership should not be understood as an individual quality, but as a relational and contextual process shaped by structure, culture, and interaction. Accenture’s organizational structure enables accountability and coordination but may also be experienced as limiting when it becomes overly formal, which in turn influences leadership and perceptions of the company.
The study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the role of leadership in employer branding, which is viewed as a collective, dynamic, and evolving process where all members of the organization contribute to how Accenture’s brand is communicated both internally and externall
The idea of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) — is that companies should take environmental, social, and economic responsibility for society, which can be traced far back in time (Borglund 2021 s. 21). In the food industry, CSR is particularly important, as companies within this sector impact the environment, society, and economy with almost every decision they make (SLU 2023). It is not enough to merely formulate a CSR strategy (Kotler et al. 2017) — it must also be implemented and meticulously adhered to in order for sustainability goals to be achieved (Gulliksson and Holmgren 2021). However, even though CSR efforts have gradually become more important for companies in the food industry and other sectors, we still need to learn more about how companies can ensure that everyone involved in the process understands, engages with, and acts in line with the established sustainability goals. Here, internal communication becomes crucial for building bridges of sustainability. Internal communication is the practice of making employees understand, engage in, and act for change (Offerman et al. 2024). In a company, it is common for sustainability managers to be at the center of this work (Velte & Stawinoga 2020) — they are the bridge between CSR on paper and how CSR is actually carried out, something they achieve by communicating, listening, and creating purpose internally. This thesis therefore aims to understand how sustainability is communicated within Swedish food companies and wich prominent factors enables internal sustanability communication.
The results indicate that several different channels and methods are used by the studied companies when conveying sustainability information within their respective organizations. In conclusion, planned direct meetings and face-to-face communication are primarily used for the purpose of communicating sustainability information within each organization. This is based on the opportunities for feedback and two-way communication that such methods provide. However, the degree of continuity and the amount of such information vary between the cases. With that said, the results of the study indicate that three particular elements appear to have been contributing to the differences. Firstly, the company's structure and size influence how sustainability information is communicated; secondly, the core purpose of the business; and thirdly, how well-established the sustainability work is within the organization. Furthermore, the results of the thesis indicate several important factors that enable effective internal sustainability communication within the food industry: the integration of sustainability into all parts of the organization and into internal communication, the adaptation of messages and channels to suit the intended recipients, the promotion of two-way communication and open dialogues, as well as active engagement and support from management in sustainability efforts
Companion birds in Sweden : husbandry and welfare
Parrots and other birds have captivated the human imagination for millennia and can be found in many homes worldwide. Despite this fascination, little is known about how life in captivity affects these birds or even what species are kept. This study used an online survey to map bird keeping in Sweden and discusses potential welfare problems these animals face in our homes. The results show that at least 46 different species, mainly parrots, are kept in Swedish homes. Trade in threatened species is also examined, finding that a quarter of all CITES-listed species may have been acquired illegally. The study identifies and discusses the prevalence and implications of abnormal behaviours among companion birds. 87% of birds in the study exhibited abnormal behaviours despite a majority having access to various forms of enrichment. The study also provides a general picture of the husbandry of companion birds in Sweden, offering a starting point for the formulation of future studies
The aim of this study is to examine how a process of change, surrounding the implementation of the textile recycling law, is shaped through the interaction of various stakeholders. The study focuses in particular on how factors such as communication, cooperation and practical challenges are construed and managed by municipalities, residents, and other relevant organizations. By conceptualizing change as a co-constructive process rather than a linear model of governance, this study aims to advance the understanding of the enabling and constraining factors influencing behavioral change within a local context.
By using Nacka county as one of various illustrative cases, the study aims to highlight how change occurs in the interplay between municipalities, waste-processing companies and residents. Rather than considering change as a linear process, it is considered as a co-creative process whereby governance, communication, and other relevant stakeholders’ interpretations interact.
Through qualitative interviews with residents and related stakeholders, the study identifies several challenges in implementing the new law, including unclear distribution of responsibilities, limited national sorting capacity, and inadequate communication strategies. Despite the fact of the awareness of the law being relatively high, the research indicates that numerous residents lack knowledge of how to act in practice. Moreover, communication is often characterized by one-way messaging, which restricts participation and co-creation among residents and stakeholders. Additionally, the uncertainty surrounding the producer responsibility has led several municipalities to avoid necessary investments
Which are the more important Magnolia species of Thailand, and what is their potential for hybridization with species hardy to Sweden?
The Magnoliaceae family represents one of the oldest lineages of flowering plants, with a rich evolutionary history spanning over 100 million years. Thailand is home to 27 native Magnolia species and offers unique and interesting opportunities for hybridization due to the diverse morphological, aesthetic, and genetic traits of its native species. This study explores the seemingly underused potential of Thai Magnolia species in hybridization with temperate varieties to enhance resilience, adaptability, and aesthetic diversity in horticulture. Through a combination of literature review, field observation, and semi-structured interviews, the study identifies key species suitable for hybridization based on genetic closeness, cultural significance, and aesthetic value thus providing knowledge for future hybridization with species hardy to Sweden and temperate regions.
The findings highlight genetic relationships between temperate magnolias and those native to Thailand providing practical findings and insights for magnolia breeders, landscape architects, conservationists and more, offering a foundation for future hybridization projects
Water Reuse and Environmental Certification : opportunities and development for water reuse in building- and infrastructure projects
The consequences of climate change such as prolonged dry periods and increasing stormwater events occurring with more intensity can have significant impact of the human life and natural ecosystems in urban environments. To protect urban vegetation, which provides us with essential ecosystem services and to support its optimal development it is crucial for society to ensure a reliable water supply. National and international visions, principles and strategies emphasize the importance of sustainable water use. There is a strive to build climate proofed cities with a resilient built environment that adopts a holistic approach where water is regarded as a resource rather than a problem.
The aim of the study is to explore the potential for water reuse and recycling within development districts. By mapping opportunities for the reuse and recycling of gray-, drainage-, and stormwater in multi-family residential buildings and office buildings the study examines water quality requirements, potential applications and storage solutions. Environmental certification systems are tools that can contribute to sustainable built environment. BREEAM-SE, LEED and WELL have been analyzed to assess their potential to incentivize sustainable water use in buildings by promoting the types of circular water flows identified in the mapping. Although decentralized circular water systems are currently rare in practice there is a lot to learn from existing projects that have implemented water reuse and recycling measures. Three case studies have been conducted: Sergelhusen in the middle of Stockholm city, Persikan in Södermalm and Bjurbäcken located in Rågsved. The circular water systems in these projects have been assessed and suggestions of development have been described with adaptions based on local context and conditions.
The study’s findings suggest that storm-, drainage-, and graywater can be reused for most non potable purposes in multi-family residential buildings and office buildings, depending of the level of treatment and the quality requirements of the application. The result shows that a sustainable usage of water as a resource can be achieved, for instance, by irrigating urban vegetation during periods of drought using continuous sources such as gray- and drainage water. The case study revealed development opportunities for water reuse and recycling in Bjurbäcken, Persikan, and Sergelhusen by combining storage methods to create multifunctional systems. Results shows that sustainable water usage may be enhanced by connecting BGG-systems to water tanks equipped with purification technologies, thereby expanding both the range of possible uses and the storage capacity. The analysis of environmental certification systems shows that BREEAM-SE and LEED can promote water recycling and reuse by rewarding projects that implement circular water strategies and thereby improving the overall certification score of the project assessed. While WELL also includes certain credits related to circular water solutions, it may function more effectively as a tool for quality assurance than as an incentive for implementation
Enriching cereal bread with faba bean concentrate : effects on taste, protein content and physicochemical parameters
A shift from animal protein towards plant-based sources of protein could, at the same time, help to enhance the nutritional quality of food and reduce negative climate impacts from agriculture. Faba beans (Vicia Faba) is a legume crop, rich in protein, fibres and minerals. It can be cultivated in cooler climates, making it especially interesting from a Swedish agricultural perspective. The incorporation of faba beans into bread, a staple in our diet, could make legumes easily accessible and thus ease a shift to plant-based proteins. The current study aims to investigate how faba bean in the form of a concentrate (65% protein) could be incorporated into bread formulas to enhance the protein levels of bread. For this purpose, varying levels of faba bean concentrate (0, 5, 10 and 15%) replaced wheat flour in a white bread formula (refined wheat, water, sugar, oil and salt). The moisture content, specific volume, colour, texture and sensory profile were assessed to examine possible alterations in bread quality.
The bread substituted with 15% faba bean- concentrate was calculated to reach a sufficient level of protein for the health claim “high in protein” (20.5–21.6 E%). Regarding physicochemical parameters, only the crust colour differed significantly (p<0.05) from the control bread. A preliminary sensory evaluation involving untrained panellists (n=40) indicated that the faba bean bread was acceptable even at the highest level of substitution (15%). However, the sensory evaluation suggested a reduced overall acceptance and the presence of off-flavours in faba bean enriched bread. In future studies, one could further increase the level of faba beans and investigate how additives could be used to enhance shelf-life, texture and reduce off-flavours
Bridging the youth-nature divide through secondary forest schools : insights from Sweden and Canada
Universal issues of biodiversity loss, climate change, and political divide underscore the need to prepare future generations with the knowledge and skills necessary to address sustainability challenges and foster forest stewardship. This study explores the implementation of place-based education (PBE) principles within forest school programs for youth ages 13–16 across Sweden and Canada. Grounded in critical pedagogy, this research identifies best practices within forest schools, for fostering sense of place, ecological literacy, and student engagement while navigating institutional and political barriers. An ethnographic, comparative case study methodology was utilized. Data were collected through 22 semi-structured interviews with forest school stakeholders and corroborated with 500 pages of pedagogical documentation.
The findings demonstrate that forest school programs can serve as powerful vehicles for fostering youth-nature relationships, particularly when they center local contexts, community partnerships, and student agency. While both Swedish and Canadian cases revealed strong alignment with PBE principles, implementation varied significantly based on governance structures, access to forest spaces, educator training, and institutional recognition. Sweden’s centralized education system facilitates national cohesion but can constrain localized adaptation and Sámi knowledge inclusion. Canada’s decentralized model allows for regional flexibility, but often results in unequitable access and under-resourced forest school programming, especially for marginalized communities.
Best practices identified across both cases include (1) frequent and consistent engagement with local forest landscapes, (2) interdisciplinary and experiential curriculum design, (3) reciprocal relationships with community and Indigenous knowledge holders, and (4) opportunities for student-driven inquiry. Structural barriers, such as curriculum rigidity and colonial legacies, continue to limit the transformative potential of forest schools. This study contributes to growing discourse on equitable and community-responsive pedagogy, by centering the experiences of secondary students—an age group often overlooked in forest education research. It underscores the need for systems and policy frameworks that are not only ecologically grounded, but culturally sustaining and critically reflexive. By examining how PBE takes shape in diverse socio-political landscapes, this study offers educational guidance for cultivating forest stewardship among youth
Native trees in Sweden : a potential gold mine for biodiversity
An effective strategy for promoting biological diversity is to use local plant materials, such as native lignoses. When native lignoses are planted, wildlife is positively affected, and insect populations in particular benefit significantly. Many types of insects have evolved together with the surrounding vegetation and play a crucial role in the ecosystem through their services, such as pollination. The larvae of several butterflies are adapted to feed on specific native plants, while adults can collect nectar from a wider range of plant species, including exotic lignoses. Some species, both among plants and animals, are currently facing the risk of extinction due to everything from climate change to reduced populations of host plants. By integrating native plant species into urban park environments, more insects and other living creatures can be supported, which in turn contributes to the ecosystem services that the world needs to survive.
The project Native trees in Sweden explores the possibilities of using local vegetation in urban park environments to benefit native species of plants and animals. The work deals with concepts related to native plant species, the benefits that Swedish lignoses offer, but also the challenges that may arise, and the lack of information and access to local material in the trade. The final part of the work includes a more detailed analysis of Lomma Kommun`s use of native lignoses in urban park environments, and a discussion of what effect this may possibly have on the ecological and aesthetic value
