From Strategy to Reality : a study on knowledge transfer and sustainable green space management in the municipality of Lund
This study investigates how knowledge about ecological sustainability is transferred and how strategic sustainability goals are implemented in practice within the green space management of Lund Municipality. The focus lies on the vertical interaction between three organizational levels, policy, tactical, and operational and how the municipality's visions for green space management are translated into day-to-day maintenance work. The study is based on a multiple case study of two parks in Lund: Stadsparken, managed through municipal intrapreneurship, and Folkparken, managed by an external contractor. By analyzing these two management models, the study provides insights into how different organizational forms affect knowledge transfer, the distribution of responsibilities, and the interpretation of sustainability goals into practical action.
The study reveals a knowledge gap between strategy and practice, where weak communication and unclear organizational structures hinder the realization of Lund’s sustainability objectives. At the operational level, awareness of policy documents and their visions is generally low, resulting in strategic goals rarely reaching daily maintenance routines. Although the newly introduced urban development department aims to improve coordination within the municipality, the effects of this reform remain difficult to identify. Green space management continues to be characterized by limited goal implementation and insufficient dialogue between organizational levels, which undermines coherent and long-term sustainable management.
Through document analysis, interviews, and focus groups, the study finds that sustainability goals risk losing their practical relevance if they are not anchored through dialogue and translated into concrete actions. It emphasizes the importance of coherent vertical communication and strategic management based on continuity and long-term planning. Achieving sustainable and strategically grounded green space management requires integrating planning, governance, and practice into a shared and ongoing process
This study explores how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) perceive and manage challenges in developing and implementing sustainability strategies. Through a qualitative, comparative case study of two SMEs from different industries, the analysis focuses on how external demands, such as new regulations and customer expectations, interact with internal resources such as competence, structure, and financial capacity.
The study shows that sustainability efforts in SMEs are often driven by the need for structure, control, and business value rather than values-based ambitions. At the same time, the companies’ operational conditions influence the strategies they adopt. One company is primarily driven by economic incentives through the development of technical sustainability tools, while the other takes a more long-term, internally focused approach, emphasizing investments in structure, competence, and communication.
By combining institutional theory and resource-based theory, the study demonstrates that a successful sustainability strategy requires both external pressure and internal capacity. It thus contributes a theoretical framework explaining how SMEs can navigate between legitimacy-seeking adaptation and effective use of resources.
As the study is based on a limited sample, the findings should be viewed as illustrative rather than generally transferable to other contexts. Further research is needed to develop tailored and practically applicable tools that support sustainable transitions in different types of SMEs
How do catchment characteristics of the National water monitoring system compare to catchment characteristics of Raw water sources in Sweden?
The chemical composition and surrounding land use of bodies of water in a catchment are vital
factors concerning how water within lakes can be used. Sweden has for a long time monitored
these factors via the national water monitoring system, resulting in a large time series of data
collected with the same method in a consistent way. These data are important, since it is used to
draw overarching conclusions about the state of Swedish water. One of the use cases of this data
would be drawing conclusions concerning the Swedish drinking water, as having a large
overarching set of data would provide insights into the condition of our drinking water lakes. The
purpose of this thesis is to find out if the conclusions drawn from the National water monitoring
system are relevant to the drinking water industry based on the comparison of their catchment
characteristics, thereby allowing the researchers and environmental analysts to use this data to
draw conclusions concerning the Swedish drinking water. This was done by me creating a GIS
shapefile of the catchments of lakes that are possible raw water sources. As a proxy for raw water
sources we used lakes covered by water protection areas, as the location and ID’s of the actual raw
water sources aren’t publicly available information. The attributes of these are then extracted and
compared to the attributes of the National water monitoring system via non-parametric tests and
comparison of the distributions. The aggregated forest characteristic was shown to be comparable
to both NWMS categories, the peat depth, open wetland, longitude and water characteristic to the
Omdrevslake category, and the latitude characteristic comparable to the Trendlake category
What do we feel when we stand by the sea? This question formed the starting point for an artistic and sensory exploration at Kosterhavet National Park. The aim of the project has been to investigate how nature interpretation can be expressed through landscape architecture, with the ambition to create a spatial experience that strengthens the visitor’s emotional connection to the place.
The project begins where the visitor center (Naturum) ends – at the meeting point between land, sea, and people – and results in a design proposal that interprets and materializes the presence of the sea through form, material, and the specific character of the site.
The project is structured in three parts: an investigative phase focusing on concepts such as nature interpretation, accessibility, and environmental psychology; an exploratory phase in which intuition, literature, site visits, and artistic approaches were used to deepen the understanding of the landscape; and a design phase where these insights were translated into concrete proposals. The method was iterative and process-oriented, with creative exploration playing a central role.
The project resulted in four design proposals – two detailed and site-specific, and two more general – which enhance both physical accessibility to the sea and mental accessibility through a sensory and aesthetic interpretation of the place. The work demonstrates that an emotion can be translated into form, and that artistic methods can deepen our understanding of nature. By allowing nature and design to cooperate rather than dominate, the project proposes a gentle approach to the sea, where nature interpretation becomes an experience in itself
Tropical forest degradation is a widespread issue with far-reaching consequences for biodiversity, ecosystem services and the global carbon balance. Despite extensive restoration initiatives, knowledge gaps remain regarding the factors that influence carbon growth and the strategies that most effectively restore forest carbon stocks. This study examines how restoration method and initial carbon stock influence the annual carbon growth in secondary tropical rainforests in Sabah, Malaysia. Using extensive field data from restored plots, this study investigates whether active restoration (AR) promotes greater carbon accumulation than passive restoration (PR), whether higher initial carbon stocks are positively correlated with carbon growth, and whether an interaction exists between these factors. Results show that AR forests exhibit nearly three times higher annual carbon growth (4.08 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹) compared to PR forests (1.34 Mg C ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹). No significant relationship was found between initial carbon stock and growth. However, a significant interaction effect between restoration strategy and initial carbon stock was observed, which influences growth. The study indicates that tropical forest restoration is context-dependent and requires site-specific approaches. Continued long-term monitoring is needed to deepen understanding of carbon dynamics in these complex ecosystems
A survey of steroidal glycoalkaloid levels in Swedish table potatoes
The potato (Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum) is today the fourth most important food crop species in the world. The potato tuber is a storage organ rich in nutritious substances such as starch, vitamin C and minerals. However, tubers also contain steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs), which in excessive doses can be toxic to consumers. SGAs are present also in other members of the Solanaceae, e.g. in tomato, eggplant, and pepper, but also occur in some species within the Liliaceae. In the cultivated potato, more than 95 % of the SGAs are in the form of α-solanine and α-chaconine. The basal SGA level in tubers at harvest varies strongly between cultivars, and certain stresses such as light and/or damage can increase the SGA levels well above the basal one. The toxicity of SGAs is due both to their interaction with cell membranes and an inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity. Signs of acute toxicity are abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting. More severe signs of poisoning are coma, paralysis and even rare cases of death have been reported. To avoid these problems, it is in many countries recommended that potatoes for human consumption should contain less than 200 mg/kg (fresh weight) of SGAs. In Sweden, this limit is legally binding.
Despite the SGA hazard, relatively little is known about SGA levels in tubers that are sold in retail stores, and to what extent the forms of package and display influences the SGA levels. In the present study, the levels of α-solanine and α-chaconine were analysed in table potato cultivars of common use in Sweden. The tubers were purchased in different sorts of packages from food stores in the Uppsala area, or obtained from plants grown outdoors. SGA levels were analysed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
Results from potatoes grown outdoors at Ultuna in year 2020 showed that the basal SGA level differed between cultivars. Also, the SGA-promoting effect of a light treatment was shown to differ between cultivars. None of the over 50 samples from retail stores contained SGA levels over the upper safe limit of 200 mg/kg.
The knowledge about how cultivars react differently to light treatments can be used by the potato industry to adapt suitable tuber package, display and post-harvest conditions. For example, if some cultivars are more sensitive to light, they might not be suitable for transparent bags but more suitable to sell in dark paper bags to prevent SGA levels from rising. Information about which cultivars that are more prone to maintain low levels of SGAs might also be of importance for potato breeders to breed potatoes with lower levels of SGAs. Finally, results also indicate that the occurrence of tuber batches with high SGA levels is very low under retail conditions (less than 1 in 50; or below 2 %). Future attempts to monitor SGA levels in table potatoes will thus need to be designed accordingly, and include sample numbers well above the 50 used here, to be able to detect a high-SGA sample with reasonable probability.
Assessing the potential of natural regeneration of Fraxinus excelsior that have been selected for tolerance of the ash dieback pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus
European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) is a noble broadleaf of significant cultural and biological importance in Europe. In past years, its population has been in rapid decline due to an invasive fungal disease known as ash dieback, caused by the pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus which causes necrosis and eventual death of the tree. The stability and existence of ash in the landscape of Europe are in danger. In this study, we inventoried 27 sites from an existing database of 1300 trees that show signs of resistance. The selection was based on the presence of at least one tree showing signs of resistance to the disease and their distribution in Sweden. Around each selected tree, we established eight circular sample plots of 2,78 m with centres located 8 and 20 meters away in the North, South, East and West directions. In each plot, we counted the number of naturally regenerated seedlings, higher than 25 cm, and categorized them into three size strata, six health classes (from No symptoms of disease to dead) and three stem forms. Later data about the site properties was extracted from online databases. The purpose of the study is to analyze the status of the understory seedlings and saplings of phenotypically tolerant ash trees, considering their potential for tolerance, as well as to grasp a better understanding of the joint effects of the disease and other environmental and site factors on ash natural regeneration. It was found that the natural regeneration surrounding ash trees selected for tolerance differed in health between sites. Correlation was found between ash dieback symptoms and stem form of the regeneration. The disease severity of the three size strata differed from each other, with trees higher than 4m exhibiting significantly worse health. In this study we have found that while the there is large potential in the natural regeneration, environmental and site factors may in complex ways affect the success and health of natural regeneration under the pressure of ash dieback
As a result of the rapidly growing environmental concerns at the end of the 20th century, various types of certification schemes began to emerge. The starting point for forestry certification was the UN's “Earth Summit” in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. At the summit, it was decided that timber traded on the global market should come from sustainably managed forests. This decision would later affect Sweden’s individual private forest owners through the introduction of two certification schemes: FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes).
Forest owners can choose to certify their forests under either of the schemes. In return, they receive a “certification premium,” an increase in the price of timber sold. However, certification not only brings financial benefits; it also requires compliance with FSC and PEFC standards.
Whether certification is economically profitable for a forest owner is not self-evident from a present value perspective. Therefore, this study examines the economic added value (the certification premium) for double-certified landowners compared to those practicing traditional, uncertified forestry. The geographical focus of the study is Värmland County, and the compensation models of three different types of companies (a state-owned company, a forest owners’ association, and a limited company) are analysed. To complement the analysis, three in-depth interviews were conducted to provide a more nuanced understanding of the market, perceptions, and management of certification systems.
The results show that for all company types, and regardless of the age of the stand, uncertified forestry generates the highest present value. Across the board, the forest owners' association’s compensation model produced the highest present value. A common finding among all three companies was that the oldest tree stands yielded the highest present value. An increase in the certification premium is thus justified for all companies. Only with such an increase would private individual forest owners receive the same yield from double-certified forestry as from traditionally uncertified forestry.
In practice, however, there are non-monetary values that are weighted differently by individual landowners. For example, certification can serve as recognition of a landowner’s commitment to sustainable forestry. Furthermore, many properties include natural set-asides, which would not be affected by certification, meaning that certification would not alter the owner’s forest use. In these cases, the certification premium may carry greater economic significance.
The results of this study can therefore serve as a guide to the economic relevance of double certification for private individual landowners, with the caveat that only a limited number of certification requirements were evaluated.
The main conclusion is that double-certified forestry is economically less profitable than uncertified traditional forestry for private individual forest owners. However, questions remain regarding the value of non-monetary benefits and how additional certification requirements might impact the overall value of certification. Further research is needed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the total impact of double certification on landowners
This study investigates the genetic diversity of the Linderöd pig, Sweden's only remaining unre-fined pig breed. By analyzing a locus of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 18 samples of Linderöd pigs, the study identified a unique haplotype that was common to all sampled pigs. This indicates that the examined region of the mitochondrial chromosome has low genetic diversity in the Linderöd pig, which may be due to the limited founder population from which today's Linde-röd pigs originate, as well as inbreeding within the breed population. The fact that all pigs shared the same haplotype also suggests that founders from all three Linderöd lines can trace their origin to a common ancestor.
The haplotype identified in the Linderöd pig was compared with several European and Asian wild boars and domestic pigs, and the phylogenetic tree created in the study shows that the Linderöd pig's haplotype is found in several of these. Several European and Asian pig breeds and wild boars were identified with the same haplotype. This indicates a historical genetic link between these pig breeds; however, when and how this link was formed is unclear. The majority of pig breeds and wild boars that shared the haplotype with the Linderöd pig were European, indicating that the ancestor of this haplotype originated on the European continent
With the extensive heating of the atmosphere many species migrate northward to track the changes in climate. Plants are dependent on seed dispersal so their offspring can move across the landscape. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine seed dispersals significance on the distribution for European plant species in a rapidly changing climate. The database EuDiS was used for information about dispersal methods of European plant species divided into long- or short distance dispersal and biotic or abiotic dispersal. The database Climplant was used for information about plant species distribution (size, northern limit, southern limit and average temperature). This study concludes that species adapted for biotic dispersal are more prevalent for species in areas with a higher average temperature which would translate to southern distributions. A reason for this pattern could be that the last ice age didn´t reach southern Europe and a higher diversity of animal species which facilitates development of mutualistic relations between plants and seed dispersers. Even though no other connection between seed dispersal and distribution could be concluded by this study it may have a grave impact on species’ ability to track climate change. The possibility to utilize long distance dispersal can be an important quality to be able to keep up with the changing climate. On the other hand, short distance dispersed species dependent on symbiotic relations may face the greatest challenges following the changing climate. This is because a significant defaunation hinders the dispersal of many plant species dependent on biotic seed dispersal. Northern species have limited options for northward migration which could lead to a decrease in genetic diversity and therefore a lower adaptability in a changing environment
