Reflections : a redesign of the area around Cassina de Pomm with focus on place identity
Place identity is a common phrase used in relation to design. How can a place identity be approached and handled? In this thesis the concept of place identity is studied as well as how an existing place identity can guide the redesign of a place.
Beneath the streets of Milan there is a slumbering system of canals. The building of the canals began already in the 10th century, but they were built over when they were out competed as a transportation system by the railway and car traffic. Today there is an increasing interest in opening the canals again which have resulted in a competition which this thesis is based on. In the competition the entries are asked to show how the place identity can be strengthened.
The method used is Research by design and through the method a design proposal is constructed. The result is made up of several parts where one of them aims to investigate and understand the existing place identity. The existing identity thereafter guides the design proposal. The design is based on the theories of Edward Relph, the place material, activities, and the meaning people assign to it.
The design proposal is called Reflections and is inspired by the reflections of the canal on the environment around it. The proposal has a main concept of preserving many things that work within the area to cherish the people's existing relations to the site. Besides that, the activities of the site will guide the design with help from the materials and character of the site
forskarteam verksamma inom Green Roof Aging Project.
labb under hösten/vintern 2021.
Green roofs contribute to important ecosystem services in our urban living environments. To
maintain and develop these merits of green roofs, knowledge is required about how the properties
of green roofs develop over time. As a possible initial part of a project for a more comprehensive
study over time, substrates from 31 green roofs have been investigated for their water holding
capacity. The roofs are located in Helsinki, Finland and substrate samples were collected during
the summer of 2021 by research team active in the Green Roof Aging Project. The type of green
roof from which the substrate samples were taken consisted of sedum roof (n = 18) and meadow
roof (n = 13) and had an age of 1-51 years. The substrate samples were transported to SLU,
Alnarp, where the water holding capacity was tested in a lab during the autumn / winter of 2021.
Based on the results of this, it was investigated which factors could explain the roofs' water
holding capacity. The factors examined were: The type of green roof (sedum / meadow), age,
organic content, depth of the substrate and bulk density. This resulted in three factors (Organic
Material, Age, Bulk Density) being able to explain 84% of the water holding capacity
Vidare konstateras att arbete i hybridform förbättrat medarbetarnas upplevda work-life balance. Before the Corona pandemic, the standard for labor has been to work from a specific workplace, such as an office. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the pandemic, companies were asked to facilitate remote working for their employees to most possible extent. The bank and finance sector had employees working from home during the whole or part of the pandemic. Previous surveys show that hybridwork is here to stay and that two of three people want to work partly from home after the pandemic. Due to that hybridwork assumes to increase as a new standard for labor, it’s important to look into the interplay between work-life balance and hybridwork.
This study aims to investigate work-life balance in a Swedish nischbank. This will be done by looking into what role hybridwork has on employees' work-life balance. A qualitative method has been used for this study where three semi-structured interviews have formed the basis for the collections of empirical material. Three employees from the Swedish nischbank Nordax Bank have been interviewed, all of them work full-time and in hybrid form. The empirical material collected from the interviews have gone through a thematic method of analysis and the material has been coded into different themes.
The empirical material of the study shows that employees experience a good work-life balance when working in hybrid form. This is due to the fact that hybridwork has contributed to more flexibility which benefits the employees work and private life. The employees point out that their work-life balance has improved since they started working in hybrid form. This improvement depends on several factors such as the specific place where the employee works from and structures around this place
Tonsillit hos hund
i tonsillparen.
Nyckelord: tonsillit, jakthundar, hundar, tonsillektomiTonsillitis is a problem in Swedish veterinary medicine that are most common in hunting dogs. The
dogs are often treated with several long medical treatments before veterinarians recommend
tonsillectomy.
Palatine tonsils, together with other lymphatic tissue in the oral cavity, is the first defense against
pathogens in the airways and gastrointestinal tract. In the field of human medicine are recurrent
tonsillitis common in children and there is little difference between recurrent tonsillitis and tonsil
hyperplasia on histopathological examination. Studies show that people that have gone through
tonsillectomy or similar procedures as adults have a significant improved life quality and a reduction
in treatment for respiratory infections. At the same time other studies show that tonsillectomy at a
young age may increase the risk of develop allergies and respiratory infections.
The aims of the present study were to examine clinical signs before tonsillectomy and compare
these to the clinical signs after tonsillectomy, to examine pathological-anatomical diagnosis (PAD)
of the palatine tonsils that have been surgically removed, and determine if tonsillectomy has longterm effects on dogs. First, information was collected from the clinical records of 253 dogs that had
undergone tonsillectomy at Nordvärmlands smådjurspraktik. Second, a questionnaire was sent out
to owners of dogs that had had a tonsillectomy at the clinic during the years 2015 - 2020. The survey
aimed to investigate the owners’ impression of their dog’s clinical signs before and after the surgery
and the dog’s performance after the tonsillectomy.
The majority of the study population consisted of dogs of hunting breeds. One third of the dogs
were of the breed Swedish Elkhounds. Almost half of the dogs were in an age between two to five
years old when they had the tonsillectomy which is an age when the dogs have been active in at least
one hunting season. Of the dogs, 133 had received medical treatment prior to the tonsillectomy.
Most commonly clindamycin, cortisone and amoxicillin had been used. Regardless of treatment, the
dogs often became temporarily better but relapsed within a year. In the PAD results, most of the
dogs had lymphoid hyperplasia (92,5%), foreign bodies (29,2%) and purulent tonsillitis (14,2%).
Shooting dogs that put the game at bay and pointing dogs had a significantly greater risk of being
affected by foreign bodies. It was impossible to predict the PAD result from the macroscopical
appearance of the tonsils. By the time of revisit to the clinic 92,6% of the dogs had no clinical signs
after tonsillectomy.
In the survey, the owners’ reported clinical signs before tonsillectomy included exercise
intolerance, affected bark, reduced sense of smell and increased consumption of grass. After the
tonsillectomy most of the dogs had no remaining clinical signs during performance. Of the
remaining clinical signs, an affected bark was most commonly noted. This could be a potential
complication after tonsillectomy as four owners answered that their dogs had affected bark after
surgery, but not before. The study showed a significant difference in how many dogs that ate grass
before and after surgery (p = 2,2 x 10–16) and how many dogs that had reduced sense of smell before
and after surgery (p = 2,2 x 10–16). This suggests that the clinical signs were related to the tonsillitis
and that tonsillectomy was an effective treatment. Significantly more dogs showed exercise
intolerance before than after tonsillectomy (p = 1,3 x 10-13), significantly more dogs had an affected
bark before than after (p = 4,1 x 10-8
). Most of the owners thought that the dogs returned to the same
performance level as before the onset of clinical signs, and some owners thought that their dog
preformed even better after tonsillectomy. Furthermore, the majority of owners reported no
respiratory diseases in their dogs after the surgery. If postoperative respiratory signs were noted, it
was mainly in the form of bronchitis and pneumonia.
In conclusion, the results of the study shows that tonsillitis can be a real problem, especially in
shooting dogs, and must be treated by a veterinarian. In these dogs, microscopical foreign bodies
were commonly found in the tonsils, which can explain why tonsillectomy resulted in resolution of
clinical signs. Most dogs regained their working ability.

Effects of plastic pollution on leaf litter decomposition in Swedish freshwater ecosystems
Plastic pollution is recognized as an increasing environmental problem, but few studies have addressed impacts on ecosystem functions, and very few have been conducted in the field. This study investigated the effects of polypropylene particles derived from disposable face masks on in-situ leaf litter decomposition processes in freshwater ecosystems. The field experiment followed a modified leaf litter bag protocol in a central-swedish urban pond and focussed on decomposition processes mediated by microbes and meiofauna. The litter bags with a mesh size of approximately 0.5mm in diameter were constructed from cotton and filled with 3.5g alder (Alnus glutinosa L.) leaves. Further, three different material treatments with different types of added material were applied to the litter bags: (1) plastic material was added, (2) saw dust as reference material was added and (3) no material was added (control group). Within the plastic treatment two different plastic particle size treatments (small/microplastic and big/ macroplastic) and two leaching treatments (unleached and pre-leached) were included. The experiment period lasted seven weeks and included five timepoints at which subsamples of litter bags were retrieved. Three main response variables were quantified: (1) ecosystem respiration as an indicator for the metabolic activity of the organism community, (2) leaf mass loss and (3) tensile strength loss of the cotton bags. The latter two variables functioned as indicator for the decomposition potential of organic material in the studied ecosystem. The findings suggest that mixing a material resistant to biodegradation within a leaf litter patch acts as a physical barrier to microbes and thus slows down the decomposition, with this effect overall being stronger for the saw dust reference material than the plastic. The presence of unleached plastic was found to increase ecosystem respiration as well as decomposition of the cotton bags compared to the pre-leached treatment. Being one of very few field experiments this study provides valuable insights on how the pervasive extent of plastic pollution from face masks may affect key functions associated with carbon cycling in freshwaters. The obtained results further illustrate how complex biological stress responses to anthropogenic pollution might be on ecosystem leve
Controls of the partitioning of nitrate between DNRA and denitrifiers
In arable soils, the importance of denitrification, a respiratory process where nitrate (NO3-) is stepwisely reduced to nitrogen gas and nitrous oxide (N2O) is well established. More recently has dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) gained interest as its importance in agricultural soils might have been largely overlooked. Since these two functional microbial groups both utilize NO3- as an electron acceptor for anaerobic respiration they are competing in the soil. One pathway can produce a potent greenhouse gas (N2O) while the other is producing plant available nitrogen, for this reason it is of importance to try to understand what factors can promote DNRA over denitrification
This experiment aims to study what drivers control the partitioning of NO3- between denitrifiers and DNRA in an agricultural soil. It also serves as a pilot for a bigger study aimed to compare the effect of these drivers on soil with different management history. Soil was incubated under anoxic conditions and resources in form of organic carbon (C) and NO3- were added in different rations (C:NO3- ratios) and amounts. We hypothesised that there would be differences related to the either C:NO3- ratio and/or amounts and that low ratios and/or high NO3- amounts will promote denitrification whereas high NO3- ratios and/or NO3- nitrogen amounts will promote DNRA.
The microcosms were destructively sampled at seven different timepoints. Gas samples from the headspace in the microcosms were analysed by gas chromatography for N2O. Soil samples were used for soil nitrogen and DNA extractions. Quantitative real-time PCR was performed on the denitrification marker gene nir, the DNRA marker gene nrfA and the 16S rRNA gene for assessing overall bacterial and archaeal community size. This experiment showed that DNRA was more abundant than denitrifiers, whereas most studies show the opposite. Further, the genetic potential for DNRA was continually high across the treatments. It was only somewhat lower for a treatment with a C:NO3- ratio of 4, with C amount equivalent to 8000 kg/ha and NO3- amount equal to 200 kg/ha, also for which genetic potential for denitrification was the highest. This experiment suggests that not C:NO3- ratio but a high amount of NO3- and carbon promotes denitrification on the expense of the otherwise continually high DNRA in the studied soil
Climate Change Adaptation Measures and Their Determinants
Climate change is increasing the detrimental effects on agricultural productivity. Effective
adaptation measures are crucial to cope with climate change impacts to reduce farmers'
vulnerability and build resilience. Therefore, this study conducted surveys in the Bekaa Valley of
the Rachaya district to identify the most common measures farmers use to adapt to climate
change, the factors influencing their adaptation, and their perception of climate change. Crop
diversification, efficient water irrigation systems, and change in planting dates are the most used
adaptation measures among 185 farmers. The multivariate probit model results showed that
age and crop pest attack significantly influence the adoption of crop diversification, whereas
training, crop pest attacks, floods, access to climate information, and social capital significantly
influence the adaptation measure of efficient water irrigation systems. Change in planting dates
was affected negatively by access to credits and schooling years; however, access to climate
information and social capital were positively influenced. Our findings show that farmers adopt
measures that are not aligned with the increase of precipitation levels, have a weak educational
background, minimal youth participation, and face credit constraints. On the other hand,
receiving climate-related information and participating in social groups significantly impacts the
adaptation measures chosen. Therefore, the implications for policymakers will be implementing
climate change learning centers, agricultural and credit policies, establishing agricultural schools
and tailored programs, and forming social clubs. These will enhance the agricultural sector and
adaptation to climate change
Horses are social animals that in the wild live in harem groups with one or several dominant stallions, several mares, and their young offspring. There are also bachelor stallion groups with several stallions, horses are rarely solitary in the wild. Stallions in captivity are mainly kept under solitary conditions. This study aims to look at what consequences solitary husbandry might have for the stallion’s welfare and what behaviour the stallions express in pasture. Ten stallions were observed in this study, five solitary and five who were kept in a group with other horses.
Our study shows that solitary stallion’s time-budgets differ from that of stallions in groups. They use less time for foraging. They use different coping mechanisms for handling the stress that solitary husbandry puts on them. Some run along the fence, some power walk and others become withdrawn and interact less with their environment. Which of these horses that are most stressed cannot be determined by this study. Stallions in solitary husbandry have poorer welfare than those kept in groups.
Since solitary stallions eat less it might be possible that the rumour that stallions are hard to keep in good condition have more to do with the solitary husbandry than the fact that they are stallions. They might both obtain better welfare and be easier to keep in good condition if they are kept in groups
Growing memories
Access to outdoor environments at dementia institutions can help maintain and improve mental and physical well-being. There have been several beneficial aspects identified in research such as lowering stress and agitation and studies suggest that familiar plants with their sensory traits may help people with dementia recall memories. Staff members and health care professionals can be an important asset when designing a dementia garden by sharing their experiences. There are indications that show that combining a research phase with the design process may produce a better dementia garden specifically suited for its user group. This thesis aims to apply relevant science to a case study and design project at two gardens at Björklunden dementia facility in Kristianstad municipality.
The garden designs are adapted to meet the needs of the staff, residents diagnosed with dementia and their relatives. The following reading will explore how a literature study influences a design proposal. The goal was to produce a safe and calm environment that increases the recreational value of the dementia facility.
This thesis was produced based on literature studies, staff interviews in collaboration with the dementia facility, and on-site inventories. Based on this knowledge, design principles were developed and utilised to build a design proposal for the dementia facility’s gardens.
The result is a design proposal that includes vegetation and management plans which reflect the design principles derived from the literature study.
Numerous design faults were avoided because the design principles were the primary contributors to the final design concept
Lots of good will : a case study in Sege park on sharing economy learning in a collaborative context
Materialet i
Cities can be part of the transition to a sustainable society by creating conditions for those who
live and work in them to make sustainable choices. At the same time, new ways of working are
needed, such as how we organise ourselves to meet the challenges of sustainability. The sharing
economy is one example that is described as contributing to the transition in many different ways,
it can contribute to reduced consumption as well as behavioural change. The starting point of the
study is learning about sharing economy issues in the collaboration between municipality and
developers, in the urban development project Sege Park in Malmö. The empirical data in the study
has been collected through interviews and document analysis. The theoretical framework is based
on a model of organisational learning as a dynamic process (Crossan et al., 1999)
The study identifies that the developers and the municipality work together on issues related to the
sharing economy in a developer dialogue (Byggherredialogen), where the main learning about
sharing takes place. According to the respondents, the learnings in the process is mainly about how
the actors can organise themselves to enable sharing services in Sege Park. This has resulted in the
formation of an economic association the purpose of which is to facilitate joint decision-making
and drive the common work within the area. Several barriers affecting the sharing economy
learning have been identified. Cultural differences between the actors are one of them, which
affects the dialogue between the actors and complicates the possibility to create a common vision.
Another barrier that has had a significant impact on learning is that neither current nor future
residents of the area have been involved in the process. This has resulted in uncertainty and a
focus on flexibility as stakeholders do not know with certainty what the future demand will be. In
order to increase learning about the sharing economy, the study identifies the importance of
making it less person-dependent and striving to increase organisational learning. With a clearer
focus on learning about the sharing economy and with a shared vision of goals, the conditions for
learning could be significantly improved
